Airport job chasing birds away from runway pays $76,252 a year

Taking down an airplane doesn't require a bomb. Just a bird.

After two major bird-airplane collisions at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, federal aviation officials are requiring Broward County to hire a full-time bird-watcher to keep birds from fowl-ing up flights, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

The $118,000 expense will include a salary of $76,252 for a wildlife biologist who specializes in keeping animals away from airports.

With that six-figure investment, said the airport's operations director, Mike Nonnemacher, "you could save hundreds of millions of dollars, and/or hundreds of lives.''

He said the school dean found his inhaler during a search of his locker last Friday.

Two men are in the Bay County Jail after attempting to steal a clock off the wall of the Panama City Police Station, wjhg.com reports.

Dennis W. Baugham, 51, and Michael A. Marquez, 34, were fighting near the Hathaway Bridge about 3 a.m. Tuesday when police were called to the scene.

Panama City police found the pair in the possession of a shopping cart taken from a store a few miles from the bridge, along with new camping items such as a tent, camping stove, and camping fuel, which the police said they believe was stolen as well. Both men were taken to the Panama City Police station.

As officers tried to figure out who owned the camping equipment, officers monitoring Marquez saw him take a clock from the wall of an interview room and try to hide it in his backpack. Officers retrieved the clock.

Both men were charged with possession of a stolen shopping cart, while Marquez was also charged with petit theft. Both men were booked into the Bay County Jail.

ORLANDO — An Orlando plastic surgeon is suing 10 patients who he claims anonymously posted comments online about their bad experiences inside his office

Dr. Armando Soto claims the complaints are lies and have damaged his good name, wftv.com reports. He said he is seeking $49,000 in damages. One woman wrote that her "9-inch scars are horrific, frightening and unnecessary" after a breast augmentation.

Critics said the lawsuit is frivolous. "The right to speak anonymously is a fundamental right, particularly when you're expressing opinion," said attorney David Muraskin.

When WFTV went to Soto's office for comment, we were directed to his blog, which said he only filed the suit to learn why his clients weren't satisfied, and if possible, fix the problems.

VOLUSIA COUNTY — Deputies say managers at a strip mall casino shut off surveillance cameras before they beat a customer.

Deputies arrested two managers at the Ez Play in Deltona in connection with the alleged attack on Saturday, wdpo.com reports. Investigators said surveillance cameras were shut off for three hours at the strip mall casino on Saxon Blvd.

During that time, officials said, they believe the employees severely beat customer Ralph Altro.

Altro, his face swollen and bruised, could hardly speak when WFTV's Blaine Tolison met with him at Halifax Medical Center. No one at Ez Play would answer questions about Altro.

Christopher Morrissey and Dominic Rizzolo were running the strip mall casino at the time. They claim Altro started an argument with them.

Tuesday night, WFTV found pages and pages of information about Rizzolo and his well-known mob family out of Las Vegas, with a shocking history of crimes.

ST. PETERSBURG — Police called it a felony case of show and tell: A 6-year-old showed up at Campbell Park Elementary School on Tuesday with more than 3 ounces of marijuana in a backpack.

"Look what I got," the kindergartner told a teacher, police said, after discovering the drugs in the backpack.

Not to be discouraged, the man shoved his mother back. Then the cavalry arrived.

The manager's younger brother entered the scene, placing himself between his brother and his mother, and holding a Nerf sword. "Hit me!" the manager allegedly yelled at his brother. His brother complied, smacking him with the sword.

The manager then picked up his brother and threw him to the ground. He was arrested soon thereafter and charged with domestic battery.

A 45-year-old Fort Myers woman was arrested Friday after allegedly lighting a couch on fire and causing significant damage to her apartment building.

WZVN-TV reports that officers with the Fort Myers Police Department arrived at the apartments on DeSoto Avenue and found the fire department attempting to put out a fire in apartment unit #2.

Jill Samantha Wooten told authorities she was tired of the couch because it was dirty and smelled of urine, so she dragged it outside of the apartment, poured lighter fluid on it, and set it ablaze. The fire spread to the structure and damaged the exterior and interior of unit #2, causing the unit to later be determined uninhabitable. It also damaged the roof of the building.

Wooten was arrested and charged with arson and domestic battery after officers saw her kicking and spitting at the man with whom she shares the apartment.

High school prom shares venue with porn convention

MIAMI BEACH -- School officials made sure a high school senior prom ran smoothly while it shared the same venue as a porn convention.

Students from Miami Beach Senior High School had their senior prom Saturday night at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but also at the center is Exxxotica, wsvn.com reports.

Exxxotica founder John Handy said the event is a celebration of love and sex. "We've always billed it as a celebration of sexy. It's the largest adult event in the country dedicated to love and sex," said Handy.

"The venue that we are using, which is the Miami Beach Convention Center, was booked with another program that we are not very happy with: Exxxotica," said Gwen Zaldivar of Miami Beach Senior High.

School officials want parents to know that the prom and Exxxotica will be in completely different sides of the convention center. "We are completely separated from the venue. We have security, we have police officers," said Zaldivar.

FORT MYERS — Cody Krecicki says he was thinking of a girl from class who balances multiple jobs to make ends meet when he sat down at his computer and began to piece together a website. How could she and others like her make a few extra dollars?

The Naples Daily News reports that Krecicki, a 22-year-old Edison State College student, soon came up with an idea: a website where men could pay women $5 for girlfriend-like tasks.

"Girls give guys advice, break up with their girlfriend for them, send them a message on Facebook they can show off to their friends...," he wrote.

He sent those lines to a writer at online news blog buzzfeed.com, who posted a story about it. That day, Girlfriendhire.com launched – and saw so much traffic, it crashed for several hours. More than a month later, the site has topped 100,000 page views. It has more than 1,600 users who have made 300 orders.

PALATKA -- Signs for a missing pet in Palatka hang from just about every street corner. Many see it as a plea for help but one thief saw it as an opportunity to make a quick buck.

"I literally couldn't breath. I was so relieved and so excited that somebody had found him," said the dog's owner, Steven Pinder.

Pinder's relief was short lived. It was a hoax. Instead of Blue, he was met by a handful of men who he says tried to rob him of the reward money. The group threatened he'd never see Blue again if Pinder didn't pay up. Fearing for his son's safety, they got in the car and took off.

"I was completely oblivious to it. I really put myself, my son and our friend in grave danger."

A Chase bank customer gets a surprise at the ATM...$1,800 sticking out of the deposit slot!

Boynton Beach police say Adriana Allen called the cops when she couldn't get the money back in to machine, NewsRadio WIOD reports.

Allen said she didn’t see any other cars around when she pulled up to the ATM, and instead of pocketing the cash, honest Adriana called the police and held on to the stack of $100 bills until an officer arrived.

Deputies responded to the incident at U.S. 41 and Acline Road, south of Punta Gorda Wednesday at 2:53 p.m. The 54-year-old woman said she accidentally bumped a Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection and she pulled over. She said a man came out of his car and began screaming and cursing at her, then reached into the car and grabbed the 16-ounce bottle and repeatedly hit her over the head and mouth area. She leaned over onto the seat to avoid getting hit again and the man leaned inside and continued to hit her with the bottle and his fist.

Hasselman told the deputy the woman was lying and said he never hit her with a bottle. The deputy then asked him how he knew she was hit with a bottle. Hasselman declined to answer any further questions and was transported to the Charlotte County Jail. He remains in jail on $20,000 bond.

St. Johns County deputies say Kelly Renee Saylor, 43, caused a disturbance on May 8 along a St. Augustine road when she began yelling at a woman before pulling down her pants in public to expose her bare butt while telling the woman, "Come get some (female dog expletive)," according to an arrest affidavit from the St. Johns Sheriff's Office.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's FloriDUH blog reports that the woman also told deputies that she saw Saylor get into an altercation with a male neighbor in which she pulled up her shirt and flashed her boobs — while yelling at the man, the arrest affidavit states. Deputies say when they made contact with Saylor it was apparent she was drunk due to her
slurred speech, watery and blood shot eyes, and odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, according to the arrest report.

A deputy stated, in the report, when he asked Saylor if she had any weapons on her person she reportedly stated "no" — then lifted up her shirt, exposing her bare breasts, before replying, "See, I don't have nothing on me," the affidavit states.

At the jail, Saylor's blood alcohol level registered 0.194, a level more than double the legal limit.

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE — Prosecutors say a former Florida postal worker ran in the Boston Marathon and participated in other athletic events while claiming her back was too badly hurt to deliver the mail.

A U.S. District Court jury agreed on Tuesday. Jurors convicted 55-year-old Jacquelyn V. Myers of Tallahassee of health care fraud and making false statements to collect workers' compensation. She could face up to 15 years in prison when sentenced July 25.

Myers reported a lower back injury in May 2009 during the annual letter carriers’ food drive. She was relieved of mail carrying and put on “light duty.” Evidence, including photos and videos, showed she participated in more than 80 long-distance races and triathlons over the next several months. Her race times also improved after the claimed injury.

VERO BEACH - Jourdan Keever thought it a "loving gesture" when her husband rubbed her back in the Vero Beach truck stop.

It might also be described as a criminal gesture as hubby William Keever apparently was preparing a Pop-Tarts and Slim Jim heist.

WPTV.com reports that Indian River County sheriff's officials unraveled the May 9 breakfast pastry and packaged meat crime after traveling to a gas station near the TA truck stop on 20th Street, according to recently released records.

The truck stop general manager told deputies he followed the couple after an employee indicated they might have engaged in some inappropriate appropriating.

Store cameras showed William Keever, 22, hiding things in a backpack his wife was wearing. Jourdan Keever, 23, let the manager look through the backpack, where he discovered some Pop-Tarts and a Slim Jim.

William Keever and his wife, both listed as homeless, each were arrested on a retail theft charge, while William Keever also was arrested on a resist merchant without violence charge.

Gasper called 911 at 1:12 p.m. Monday to report his neighbor, who he claims he is in a dispute with over a dirt road they share as a driveway, threatened to pull a gun on him and harm him. Gasper said the incident was in progress but deputies responding to the scene discovered the neighbor was not at home.

Whoever stole some discarded equipment from outside a pathology lab may have gotten more than he or she bargained for, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Orlando police say the equipment, worth about $500,000, is contaminated with a substance that could eat away at human skin.

A pickup hauling a trailer pulled up to Florida Hospital Center for Diagnostic Pathology, 2855 N. Orange Ave., on May 3 and took the equipment from an enclosed area near a large garbage bin, police said. The theft was not reported until Friday, said St. Vince Ogburn, a police spokesman.

BRANDON — Charles Mabry Jr. neglected to use a turn signal Monday morning, setting off a road rage incident with Cheng Hsieh that sent Mabry to the hospital and Hsieh to jail.

According to deputies, the two men began yelling at one another. Hsieh, 41, criticized Mabry's failure to abide by the rules of the road. Mabry, 29, did not appreciate the input. When they got near Heather Lakes Boulevard and Barmere Lane, the two men stopped in the road and got out of their vehicles.

Authorities say Hsieh armed himself with the stun gun and walked toward Mabry, who started to leave, then put his vehicle in reverse and tried to strike Hsieh, who was able to jump out of the way. Mabry then drove his car into the driver's side door of Hsieh's Mercedes.

It wasn't over. Hsieh fetched his baseball bat and struck Mabry several times in the head, face and arms, deputies said. Mabry was taken to Brandon Hospital.

Deputies arrested Hsieh on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was released from jail Monday.

Skulls found buried in a Florida back yard have been dated to 1200-1400 AD, authorities said Monday.

The website Mail Online reports that the skulls, of a man and 10-year-old boy, were believed to be from Peru or another region of South America almost 900 years ago.

The bones were found at a home in Winter Garden in January when a plumber working on a new swimming pool came across a bone fragment and called the police.

Paul, Romney supporters reportedly come to blows in Oklahoma; a preview of Tampa convention?

Mainstream Republicans afraid Ron Paul’s steady accumulation of delegates will cause chaos at their national convention in Tampa just received a terrifying preview of what a worst-case scenario might look like, the website Talking Points Memo reports.

In Oklahoma on Saturday, Paul supporters and Romney supporters reportedly came to blows as the Paul side fell short of electing their slate of delegates amid cries of foul play, including the use of a voice vote instead of a more painstaking roll call to decide the outcome. Speaking at the event, Romney surrogates Tim Pawlenty and the state’s own governor, Mary Fallin, drew jeers.

At the state convention in Arizona, also this weekend, the presumptive nominee’s son, Josh Romney, was booed off the stage by Paul supporters, some of whom derided his father as “the white Obama.”

Jurors, court watchers agree, sometimes do the darnedest things.

FORT WALTON BEACH — After a man told his girlfriend he's breaking up with her, she got so angry that she bit him on the leg and chased him out of the house armed with a paintball gun.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that the 41-year-old woman had been living with her boyfriend of one year at an apartment on Sims Street for about six months, according to an arrest report from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. She was highly intoxicated on the evening of April 27 and began to argue with her boyfriend about their relationship, the report said.

Her boyfriend said he wanted to break things off and tried to leave, but the woman grabbed his leg and bit him so hard that she caused him to bleed, according to the report. Then she grabbed the paintball gun.

The woman was charged with assault and battery causing bodily harm.

A resident on Wednesday called some thieves "stupid" for breaking into his home while it was tented for fumigation, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

"They're obviously not very smart to go inside a house full of poison," said T.V. Sagnella, who lives in the burglarized two-story home in the 400 block of Southwest 18th Avenue. "I wouldn't kill myself for a Xbox."

The Microsoft Xbox video-game console was among several items targeted by the thieves, who didn't get a chance to steal much because of a swift police response, Sagnella said.

Man with seafood in his pants slips away from Stuart Publix, deputies say

A man with a fish on his shirt is accused of leaving Publix with flounder and shrimp in his shorts, according to a recently released Martin County Sheriff's Office report.

What could be called the case of the fish filcher that flipped away played out May 3 at a Publix in Stuart in the 5800 block of Southeast Federal Highway, TCPalm.com reports.

A loss prevention official told a deputy she spied two men ordering at the seafood department. The loss prevention official said one of the men put a seafood order in a shopping cart and walked away, while the second man put another seafood order in the cart.

The second man, described as wearing a blue shirt with a fish on the back and khaki shorts, wheeled the cart down aisle four and apparently did something fishy. He stuffed the seafood -- $44 worth of flounder and $12 in rock shrimp -- down his shorts and left. Deputies still are looking for him. It's unclear why the loss prevention officer didn't apprehend him.

A Key West man accused of recording his roommates having sex via a camera taped inside an air vent was arrested Monday.

The Key West Citizen reports that Edward Raymond Mathis, 49, of Hilton Haven Drive, was charged with sex offense/video voyeurism as well as possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. All the charges are misdemeanors.

Officers were called Sunday to Hilton Haven Drive, where a 30-year-old man reported finding a recording device in the air conditioner vent located directly over his and his girlfriend's bed, according to a police incident report and arrest affidavit. When questioned by police, Mathis reportedly told them that he first installed a web camera in the bathroom vent, but he reportedly "got bored and switched it over to the bedroom."

Mathis' reportedly admitted to watching the couple having sex and to watching the 26-year-old woman naked in the shower via the camera, according to the affidavit.

In two separate instances that hearken back to the drug-running days of the Florida Keys, people have found packages of marijuana worth thousands of dollars either washed ashore or floating in the water, the Key West Citizen reports.

A 10-pound package worth an estimated $20,000 was found by a beachgoer at 8:32 a.m. May 2 at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.

Four days later, a 6-pound package worth an estimated $15,000 was found by a boater at 7:40 a.m. near White Street Pier off Higgs Beach.

MIAMI — The 8-year-old twins love their iPad. They draw, play games and expand their vocabulary. Their family's teenagers also like the hand-held computer tablets, too, but the clan's elders show no interest.

The orangutans at Miami's Jungle Island apparently are just like people when it comes to technology. The park is one of several zoos experimenting with computers and apes, letting its six orangutans use an iPad to communicate and as part of a mental stimulus program. Linda Jacobs, who oversees the program, hopes the devices will eventually help bridge the gap between humans and the endangered apes.

ZEPHYRHILLS — A Zephyrhills High School science teacher faces dismissal amid allegations that she used a "cone of shame" dog collar to discipline students.

Pasco County schools superintendent Heather Fiorentino has recommended firing physical science teacher Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp, 47, for putting the collar — the type used to prevent animals from licking themselves after surgery — on at least eight of her ninth graders on two days in April.

Zephyrhills High administrators learned of the teacher's actions after seeing the students' photos on Facebook. Parents tipped off the school.

"Your actions show extremely poor judgment and concern me for several reasons," Fiorentino said in a letter to Bailey-Cutkomp. "I am stunned that you would put dog collars on students for any reason. I am very concerned that you used this collar to punish and embarrass students in front of their peers."

Brevard County libraries pull erotic bestseller

The erotic Fifty Shades of Grey apparently is too blue for the Brevard County Public Libraries system.

The Palm Beach Post reports that the wildly popular first installment of a titillating trilogy by British author E.L. James, Fifty Shades is parked atop every bestseller list in the country, from Amazon to the New York Times.

But the sadomasochistic saga won’t be found any longer on Space Coast library shelves. All of a “handful” of copies were removed from circulation earlier this week.

“It’s quite simple — it doesn’t meet our selection criteria,” said Cathy Schweinsberg, library services director.

“Nobody asked us to take it off the shelves. But we bought some copies before we realized what it was. We looked at it, because it’s been called ‘mommy porn’ and ‘soft porn.’ We don’t collect porn.”

Trashed by many critics speaking to its literary quality, Fifty Shades of Grey is explicitly sexual in its description of the relationship between heroine Anastasia Steele, an innocent recent college graduate, and Christian Grey, a 27-year-old billionaire businessman with domineering and sadistic tendencies.

James, click here.

Men's Health dubbed Orlando the "smuttiest city" in America. The magazine claims its researchers took into account the number of pornographic films bought, rented or streamed online. They also looked into the number of adult stores and Internet searches.

The result? Men's Health says Orlando is ahead of the rest when it comes to adult material.Las Vegas came in second. Tampa took eighth place and Miami is No. 12.

CRESTVIEW — A juvenile girl choking on granola during 'snack time' at her place of work snapped when she was taunted by a fellow employee, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that the taunting co-worker allegedly began chanting "choke, choke," when the girl ran into difficulties swallowing her snack.

Eyewitness reports state that this chanting "set off" the choking girl into a rage. She leapt up, hit the co-worker in the shoulder and then dumped her milk on his head. She was promptly arrested. According to the report, once she was arrested, "the defendant admitted she hit the victim and poured milk on his head."

Okaloosa County's top tourism official stepped down under pressure Tuesday after acknowledging he bought a $710,000 yacht with bed tax money, the Northwest Florida Daily News reports.

Mark Bellinger, who has been the head of the county’s Tourist Development Council since May 2010, told county commissioners he bought the yacht in December to use in a year-long promotional campaign.

County Administrator Jim Curry and the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the purchase.

Bellinger could not be reached for comment Wednesday. It is not believed that he bought the yacht for his personal use.

Bellinger is authorized to make certain purchases as TDC director, but had not told the TDC’s board of directors or county commissioners about buying the 40-foot yacht.
