There once was a scene up in Boston, where things weren’t nearly so awesome. So the kids went to Cambridge where people have knowledge and there the dance music did blossom!

Five years after our infamous Dancing on the Charles outdoor parties helped put Boston on the dance music map and launched our careers into the stratosphere, we’re returning to our roots on the banks of the Charles River. Soul Clap presents: Dancing On The Charles is a part of the Boston dance music story that shines a spotlight on our hometown and unearths some incredible talent. Born from the same spirit and philosophy that has so powerfully shaped our DJ sets, this is a musically diverse compilation of artists held together by geography representing the wide spectrum found in our hometown.

It was written in the stars. When a fashion blog is called Wolf + Panther they obviously need to interview Wolf + Lamb artists. Justone and Nicky Styles caught us at Ultra in Miami a month back and we talked some shit.

Saw this Gandhi quote on the wall at a coffee shop in Amsterdam:

“The customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so.”

This ideal is also at the heart of DJing. Sure we met get some stupid requests that we’ll never play, but we should always treat our listeners and dancers with the upmost respect. Without them, we can’t do what we love so much.

The stage is set in the blinding heat of the Mediterranean summer where the Crew Love posse set up camp at a finca in St. Joan, Mallorca. An open ended studio visit extended to PillowTalk yielded the extraordinary talent of their ever rambunctious hype man, Navid Izadi who hungrily devoured studio time with Wolf + Lamb’s Gadi Mizrahi aka Baby Prince as the PillowTalk boys maxed and relaxed. Written in an outdoor studio overlooking the countryside and signed in a heartbeat to Soul Clap Records, here’s how The Last Dance EP went down in their words:

Baby Prince: “…it was the weekend when we had invited the PillowTalk crew and Navid to join us in the sun for some pool basketball, ham and wild BBQ’s.”
Navid Izadi: “Basically I

really wanted to go to Mallorca with the PT boys, as it was to be my first time really hangin with Gadi [Mizrahi] and Zev [Eisenberg] on a personal level since they picked up my Double Standard EP [Ain't Got The Time].”

BP: “I had heard of Navid and how talented he was from some friends and was really excited to work on music together.”
NI: “The first day (after some obligatory poolside/ BBQ action), Gadi and I got to talking about what kind of stuff we were into at the moment, which was pretty in line with one abother. I know Jamie Principle came up, some other old school house stuff etc. fun stuff, rough stuff, not overproduced or over-thought, mostly black stuff etc…. so the next day we took that and just started working together with the patented Soul Clap Ableton [LIVE] time sync method.”

BP: “The process was super smooth as soon as we sat down to write tracks and three days later we had three tracks fully written and tracked out.”
NI: “The whole session went from about the time I woke up (around 1pm or 2pm) to about the time the sun went down, which I’d say was about four to five hours altogether. I think Sammy D was the only PillowTalk boy who wasn’t sick/hungover/sleeping, and he hung out with us during the process, dropping his vocals when he saw fit (with no mic stand/pop screen, no less). It took a second to get him to not sing in his typically silky fashion and to get old school sleazy with it for “Last Song Of The Dance”, but needless to say, he nailed it. Three tracks in one afternoon, with another day or two taken to track it all out and it was dunzo. The EP made itself!”

As if one mind-boggling new collaboration wasn’t enough, the ‘Last Dance EP’ features a remix by fellow Crew Love members Tanner Ross and Deniz Kurtel who turn out an EFUNK meets hip-hop in outer space version of the title track.

It’s not often that we play an afterparty and the local DJ can get as eclectic as us, but that’s exactly what happened one epic morning on a boat in the Rio De Janeiro harbor. That DJ was Davis, resident at Sao Paolo’s legendary d.edge club, producer since 2008, member of new Brazilian band, The Drone Lovers and all around lover of music. From that morning I knew I had met a kindred musical spirit, I mean Davis loves music so much he named his dogs Moog & Neeve (after the famous synthesizers). So it was obvious that he would do a podcast for us eventually, and here it is, chocked full of eclectic, deep, disco, dopeness and just in time for his birthday. Nick Monaco’s “Naked Is My Nature EP” drops in January on Soul Clap Records.

We’ve been fans of Night Plane since back in 2010 when he did his first podcast for us. The standout track on there was his edit of Beach House’s “Str8 To Ur Heart”, which became our anthem that spring/summer. So it made perfect sense to enlist his talents as the first artist in of our Soul Clap Records and feature his music as the first release on the label. To help you get to know him a little better, here’s what he has to say about the tracks on the vinyl.

“All of these songs come from the fact that I grew up listening to rock and indie music in one ear and techno in the other. Listening to Soul Clap’s music has inspired me to find new ways of digging into the sounds that were in my spirit and sharing them with others.

“Heartbeat is about being so full of feelings for another person that it almost freaks you out. I knew Casey had to sing the vocal because he’s capable of this big roaring lion singing which I felt the song needed. Casey lives in Chicago and we had to wait until he came to NY to do the vocal because he was afraid of singing that loudly in his apartment building, and when he got to NY I made him belt it out until he was red in the face. I’m really happy with the guitar. I don’t know how to play guitar at all, so the fact that it sounds cool is a minor miracle.

“Gold Soundz harkens back to the days when Harry Bennett and

I lived in Austin and Harry spun house records at Liberty Lunch in between bands. I think it’s an example of a song having a universal message even if it makes no sense whatsoever. The keyboard lines come from Harry playing keyboards upside-down. We love Murk Records and I like to think this track has a Murky vibe to it.

“Gates of Dawn is my version of an aubade, which is a form of a love song sung by medieval troubadours. An aubade is sung in the morning, when two lovers must
part after having spent the night together. So it’s the opposite of a serenade, which is sung in the evening, when you’re still trying to get the girl. This aubade is about reckoning with the event of falling love, and having to turn and face the morning and either embrace this new love or just put your shoes back on and go home. The sound was partly inspired by Burning Man, which I have never been to, but I wanted to make something that would sound good at Burning Man at sunrise, at least in my imagination. The title is obviously a Pink Floyd reference.

“Foreign Affairs is a song that I came up while on the island of Buyukada, which is part of a little cluster of islands right off of Istanbul. My friend and I went there and rented bikes and biked all around the island in the blazing Mediterranean summer, which was an amazing time. I loved that feeling of being so far, far away from everything, from all of my life and responsibilities to other people, it’s beautiful, but at the same time I was

aware of a sort of melancholic undertow at the moment, and of the psychic costs you have to pay when you disconnect from those who love you and travel to the ends of the earth.”

Sometimes the most rewarding part of running The Adventures of Soul Clap is finding that new DJ that no one has heard of yet, but has that special something that makes us NEED to

include them in our podcast series. That was the case with Monsieur M, who I met after our first set in Athens and proceeded to talk to for hours about music and life. He told me about his disco edit oriented Modernism project with our buddy Thodoris Triantafillou, his love of r&b and deep music, and of course life in Greece. After he sent me a bunch of dope edits and mixes i asked him to contribute a podcast and boy did he deliver!

It took awhile to fit it into the schedule, but his mix, Soul Survivor pt. 1 is actually perfect for the holiday season. It’s as smooth a mix of 80′s and 90′s r&b as you’re going to here anywhere and it includes some of our all time favorite jams.
