It’s not often that we play an afterparty and the local DJ can get as eclectic as us, but that’s exactly what happened one epic morning on a boat in the Rio De Janeiro harbor. That DJ was Davis, resident at Sao Paolo’s legendary d.edge club, producer since 2008, member of new Brazilian band, The Drone Lovers and all around lover of music. From that morning I knew I had met a kindred musical spirit, I mean Davis loves music so much he named his dogs Moog & Neeve (after the famous synthesizers). So it was obvious that he would do a podcast for us eventually, and here it is, chocked full of eclectic, deep, disco, dopeness and just in time for his birthday. Sometimes the most rewarding part of running The Adventures of Soul Clap is finding that new DJ that no one has heard of yet, but has that special something that makes us NEED to

include them in our podcast series. That was the case with Monsieur M, who I met after our first set in Athens and proceeded to talk to for hours about music and life. He told me about his disco edit oriented Modernism project with our buddy Thodoris Triantafillou, his love of r&b and deep music, and of course life in Greece. After he sent me a bunch of dope edits and mixes i asked him to contribute a podcast and boy did he deliver!

It took awhile to fit it into the schedule, but his mix, Soul Survivor pt. 1 is actually perfect for the holiday season. We’ve known Richy Ahmed for awhile. You may know him to. He’s everyone’s favorite Geordie with the tough guy looks but teddy bear heart. Lately he’s been spinning records all over the world, but when we first met him probably 3 years ago now we all were just hanging out. And while first meetings can become hazy I think it was actually in a very special place in London. The house at 145 Clarence Road. So when he hit us up personally to present his mix from the last party at this legendary place for our podcast we were honored he thought of us. I mean after all the adventures we all had there it may just be the most appropriate podcast we’ve presented yet…

Here’s what Richy had to say:

For many, 145 Clarence Road, in Clapton, East London was UK capital’s nearest equivalent to Wolf + Lamb’s legendary Marcy Hotel. Over the years this unassuming East London bachelor pad has done more for British dance music culture than any other address in town. Over the last seven years it has been home to so many of our good friends and fellow DJs; past housemates have included Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Kenny Glasgow, Luca C, Will Rebels, Ginger Will, Ben ‘Poundtown’ Pound and of course Richy Ahmed. Oh and less we forget Billie Jean the house cat.

This mix was recorded during the ‘closing party’ of the legendary location in June, where Richy had lived for the last two years. His effervescent blend of sun-dappled disco, house and hip-hop captures the after-hours vibe perfectly, and evokes bittersweet memories of long standing friendships forged during endless after-parties, great times, hilarious banter and even better music.

This mix represents the end of an era. Seldom has one house meant so much to so many people.

Returning to us in full-frontal-vinyl-vision is another contribution to The Adventures Of Soul Clap Podcast from London’s own rabble rousing, disco DJ, socialite extraordinaire and London Electronic master mind, Derren Smart.

Derren first appeared in our programing with podcast Episode 78 following the epic “A Night With… Wolf + Lamb & Soul Clap”  event which he produced during our european DJ-Kicks tour back in 2010.  This summer we had the pleasure of returning to perform at another one of Derren’s “A Night With…” parties, this time at Loft Studios in the West side of town.  8 hours of magic later, we were left standing around in awe of the fact we had just played our best gig yet in London!  With the sun shining in the bright morning, a group of friends leftover from the party got together in Derren’s office at Loft Studios.  He opened his laptop and began to take us on an private after-party disco mission, reminding us that he was overdue for another podcast.

If you were at Sonar 2012 then you remember the Off Sonar Debut of the Wolf + Lamb Experience at Boo Beach Club. It was an epic event with most of the crew dropping bombs all day and into the night. The only problem

was that it ended at like 2am so we were all thrown into the Barcelona night with nowhere to go and an unquenchable urge to keep the party going, but, what could we do? We couldn’t let the magic go and head to a random afterparty with most likely mediocre music so we were left to wander back to our hotel. After mostly splitting up, a few of us decided to head back to the beach to watch the sunrise, but on the way the most amazing thing happened, we kept running into more homies who had the same idea and the crew kept growing. When we finally made it back to the beach we were back in full effect and once Eli & Gadi busted out the Jamboxes and Benoit & Sergio’s Sergio Giorgini busted out the iPhone we had our very own beach party that even the cops didn’t bust!

For the last 3 years my friend Fonze from New York has been asking me to play his birthday party, but unfortunately I’m just never in New York March 16th. So after the great experience we had letting someone else choose the songs for our Louche podcast I figured I could make it up to Fonze by letting him choose his favorite songs and making him a birthday mix. This week’s adventure begins about a year ago when someone handed us a copy of the first 12″ on Illusion Recordings and hidden on the B2 was a surprisingly original 90′s influenced slow house jam by the one and only Garry Todd. Now we get cool tracks from new producers all the time, but this one was vinyl only (young producers take note) and we couldn’t stop playing it, and then there was the kicker, we met Garry in real life… and like his bio says he truly is larger than life! From his massive beard, to his and his girl’s full on tie-dye tracksuits at our last 90′s jam, Garry brings the flavor in just the way we like. Throw in a love for the 90′s and we were sold and asked him to contribute an adventure to the podcast. Garry’s 90′s vibe, positivity and fun shines through in his music and especially in this mix, so clappers it’s time to tune in, turn on and drop out!

The Adventures of Soul Clap Episode 97: Garry Todd Is Proper Badboy

It’s not often we post podcasts from DJs that we’ve never met before. Then again it’s not often that we get sent amazing old school hip-hop mixes. Once you factor in that it was our favorite Frenchy, Leo Le Loup who did the sending, you can understand why we’d make an exception for this exceptional mix. This gem of a mix comes from Chris Carrier, one of France’s most prolific and eclectic producers. The late 80′s is an often forgotten era in hip-hop, it takes a deep knowledge to cover this time when the genre was really spreading its wings and Chris provides the perfect history lesson.

The studio naturally became my distraction and one night I found myself mulling over the music that had first got me into the club scene as a teenager in Paris. I actually started out as a hip hop DJ in the late 80’s so this mix harks back to my lesser known East Side roots All the tracks are pure old skool gems from around 85’ to 90’, and includes independent New York labels like Profile, Warlock and its now defunct sub-label Fresh Records. I wanted to keep the old skool vibe the whole way through, to create a genuine slice of DJ Chris Carrier la Paris 1990. Get ready then for a full 60 minutes of raw rapping, hip shaking, head-nodding stuff…hope you enjoy!

Sometimes we get lazy. I know, hard to believe, but while we may spend most of our time in outerspace, we are human after all. That’s why we haven’t posted a podcast in over a month even though we’ve have this amazing episode ready since late August. Maybe in this case though, it’s a blessing. Because this episode, oh loyal clappers, is all about the Summer of Love 2011. And who better bring back that warm sunshine vibe than 2 young guns that were there for almost all the big moments Kazim Kazim Kazim & ThomThom from Hang the DJ.

If you were at the “quite” pool party at Garden Fest in Croatia, that sweaty loft party in London, or numerous intimate Berlin gatherings, then you remember these guys dropping some of these jams. This eclectic style, “girls at the front, dudes at the back” attitude and priority to getting butts moving rather than long mixing, made the whole Hang the DJ crew the perfect addition to our parties, but the story actually started well before the summer began. Kazim also runs the label called somethinksounds and way back in Miami last winter he asked us to remix a track by Lucky Paul. I checked it out and daymn was it dope, but we were in the midst of mixing DJ Kicks so I passed it to Greg Paulus from No Regular Play, who turned out a beautifully deep house version. Then Kaz sent us another Lucky Paul track that Gadi and I spent about one night turning into our Money vs. Gold remix that you heard us dropping all Kicks tour. Once we got to Berlin where the young Brits live we hit it right off and they became staples. They’ve been part of the Adventure and you can be too

To honour meeting with WLSC guys this summer, our mutual Dj styles and party fetish, we have done a mix which should hopefully describe our somethinksounds and Hang the Dj parties pretty well. As we’ve said before, one of the best perks of DJ around the world is meeting other amazing DJs and producers. This is really what The Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast is all about and this episode is definitely one of the crowning achievements of our mission. MAM (Matt Hughes & Miguel Campbell) are a duo based in Leeds, England. The two producers met online via their mutual love for Daft Punk and in 2007, decided to join forces and recreate that classic French Touch sound. Unless you live under a rock you’ve heard of Miguel Campbell and his beautiful summer anthem “Something Special“, but if you’ve been paying attention you’ve heard his music in almost every one of our sets since we met him at an after party in Leeds almost 2 years ago!

Miguel is one of those people that you say “it couldn’t have happened to better guy”. His productions (both solo and with MAM) have brought back French Touch and always bring the funk in the unique way that we were waiting for, he runs his own label called Outcross (which is already 19 releases deep!), but he’s also one of the nicest, most grounded dudes we’ve met in this game. With Matt, he forms a production powerhouse that have been turning out some of the sexiest and most solid edits around and scored them the most recent Wolf + Lamb Black release. Now we have the honor of feature their first mix together in years right here on our podcast, but that’s not all… next week we’re doing our next FreE.P. of MAM edits all for you!

It is always such a pleasure when we get to shine our intergalactic spotlight on those hard working DJs who make our beloved scene happen. This latest installation comes from way out west in Portland, Oregon where a couple of lady DJs from the Alga-Rhythms crew, Sappho & The Perfect Cyn, have been keeping the fire burning booking acts from around the world and hosting some of the best after-hours house parties we’ve encountered. Cities like Portland are a total wildcard, you never know what to expect, and coming from Boston we totally get that. Well ladies, you’ve definitely impressed us with your DJ skills and you’ve managed to build something really special out there, so it is our pleasure to dedicate this Adventures Of Soul Clap moment to you two!

Here’s some words from Sappho & Cyn:

Going back over the tracks we included, we realized that a lot of them are about love and friendship. That’s appropriately so, since we’ve been friends and playing the same shows around the Pacific Northwest for better part of 8 years. From both playing at a Canadian iceberg in 2003, to dive bars around Industrial NW Portland, to most recently at a rave on Caterpillar island between Oregon and Washington, it’s been an adventure we’ve both been lucky enough to experience.

The mix is about three main parts. It starts out pretty bumpin’, like when you first get to the club and you’re anticipating everything that’s going to happen that night. Later the mix goes deepy, like when … the party gets loose. And weird, and wonderful. Then toward the end, the mix goes more party jam style, where every track is your favorite track, going between genres, when the sun is coming up and everyone has new best friend and a big ol’ smile on their face! Between our full time jobs, relationships, and responsibilities, we had a blast making this recording and hope listeners wanna play it over and over. Never mind the fact that we stayed home from work to write this bio!

So way back in April right after our DJ Kicks compilation was released and we were promoting our Lonely C single, !K7 and Bearport got together and asked us to curate a Mixcloud competition. Because Lonely C is all about loneliness (duh) and looking for love we decided that the comp should be a “mixtape for the brokenhearted”. Of course this is a very open ended theme just the way we like it here on the mothership and therefore we got a ton of diverse and beautifully painful entries (for some runner-up highlights click here), but the mix that won was simply described as “Love Saves The Day”. You know we believe in the power of love and one listen to Davide from Sedma‘s Mixtape for Heartbreak proved to us that our winner does to. Much like Tanner’s recent mix here on The Adventures of Soul Clap, Davide pushed aside traditional beat-matching techniques and chose to instead showcase the music. While some people poo-poo this style, we simply point them to David Mancuso and the legendary loft and to hear such a young DJ as Davide understand the history is super exciting to us. Even cooler… we actually met him when we played in his home town, Ferrara, Italy. So get cozy with your heartbroken self, or even sit down and cry with someone special and open your ears to the power of love…

While I could write my own essay on the subject, the first sentence of their bio captures our love for soho808. “One of the best parts about raging at an after-hours is the people you meet.” I first met Nathaniel Jay, one half of this dynamic NYC based disco duo around 3 years ago at an afterparty and ended up back at his place dropping pitched down deephouse jams until the next afternoon and soon after he turned in his first wonderful episode of our adventures. Since then it’s been a pleasure to hear the pitched down sounds coming from him and his partner Dave Robertson as soho808. In fact we liked their “Just To See” track so much we included it on our Social Experiment mix and it’s now available to buy on its own. With their reputation continuing to grow it seemed the perfect time to bring the duo in for another adventure with us. Tanner Ross, Tanner Black, T-Rex, the list goes on and on, but nicknames only begin to describe our love affair with our favorite person to ever be born in New Jersey. So it’s hard to believe that the last time Mr. Ross graced the Adventures of Soul Clap was all the way back in December 2007, but it really has been almost 4 years since he turned out this deep, dark mix of techno and house jams. Just compare the tracklist of that mix with this one and it’s obvious how much has changed. Way back then we didn’t even have a record out, but Tanner already had a ton of releases under his belt and that was even before his Voodeux project blew up on Mothership Records. We basically spent the next 2 years trying to catch up and finally got on the level to work on music together in 2009, which became our S.E.C.T. project. The last year has seen us take our game to the next level, but as we’ve spread our wings, it’s always been important for us to bring our homies up too and we’ve been lucky enough do just that with Tanner as he signed to Wolf + Lamb and tours Europe with us on Geist Agency.

Now, the whole story comes full circle with a Tanner Ross & Soul Clap EP due out on Wolf + Lamb this month. It’s called the Shady Shores EP because we wrote or finished the music together during our retreat last winter in Miami Shores, which became known as Shady Shores for reasons that will go unmentioned While Tanner didn’t make this mix there, it’s a mix inspired by our time together in different places. From years in Boston, to sessions in Miami, to the last month of mayhem at the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, this is music that we listen to when we’re just hanging out, playing ping-pong or J’n-Oh. It’s the soundtrack to life, love and family being together worked together by a DJ at the top of his game. Welcome to Tanner’s world…

Flashback Winter Music Conference 2008. In our hands, 100 copies of the first Soul Clap record a cute yellow 10″ called The Giraffe released on Airdrop. Now picture a backyard bbq at a bar formerly known as PS14 and a bunch of the world’s best DJs and America’s dance music industry wearing cheap sunglasses and getting their schmooze and booze on…

At the time we didn’t realize it, but looking back, Crazy Larry and Taimur + Fahad’s Cheap Sunglasses party was probably the moment that American dance music came together to form the movement it is today and we were there, wet around the ears and giving out copies of our vinyl to our idols.

So what does this winding story have to do with this Episode of The Adventures of Soul Clap? One of characters we met was a DJ named Simon Baker from Leeds, UK. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He had one of the bombs of 2007 in Plastik and just released an awesome album on 20:20 Vision?! Well, we were overjoyed to get him a copy of The Giraffe and not only was he sweet enough to sit down, have a chat and offer words of encouragement, but we immediately bonded and partied together a few weeks later in New York.

Since then Simon has always been one of our biggest supporters. From charting our tracks to coming to hang at our first gig in Leeds with all of 30 other people, Mr. Baker has been what the brits call a “legend, mate”. So when he asked to do us a podcast we were honored to have him on board and boy did he deliver with a mix of perfectly chilled morning house to take you back to your wigwam. And let us tell you, after a weekend staying in a Wigwam at Glastonbury we know just what he’s talking about when he says:

The Adventures of Soul Clap Episode 89: Back 2 Simon Baker’s Wigwam

This podcast sure has been a long time coming. Chances are if you’ve read our interviews you’ve seen us mention one of our greatest Boston mentors, DJ Kon. This is the guy who discovered us during our Next Generation Productions years when we, along with our old business partner Sammy Sokol used promote hip-hop and pop club nights in the Bean. Back then we had a Saturday night residency at a club called Aria along with Kon and it was there we became friends. He could tell we were serious about DJing but still had a lot to learn and we were very fortunate to become his students!

Kon, born Christian Taylor, is a living, breathing encyclopedia of all things disco. His gargantuan vinyl collection has earned him the title “King Of Digging” by BBE Records who put out a compilation under the same name along with fellow record collector Amir (BBE also signed a 5-album compilation series deal called On-Track). He also has managed to position himself in the middle of a group of anonymous mutli-track collectors known only as the “Super Friends” who posses digital versions of the original recording sessions of some of pop musics greatest artists such as Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Michael Jackson and on and on and on! This resource along with Kon’s endless knowledge of music has resulted him creating some of the most dance-floor friendly Re-Edits we’ve EVER heard. Now, most of the best ones are unreleased, but you can check out Kon’s Off-Track vinyl series and pickup some of these gems.

We’re really excited to finally have a mix from our Boston homie. He seriously has to be one of the most skilled technical DJ’s to ever walk this earth and you can hear it in his programming and mixing. Always keeping the flow of mood and even mixing songs in key! We want to thank Kon for all he’s done for us and hope you enjoy. Oh lastly, he’s currently looking for a new agent to handle his European/World bookings. “This mix was recorded live at Cult club in Moscow for their 10 yr anniversary party. This was my 2nd time rocking this venue and knew from the last time that it would be live. Its the only club in Moscow that has built its rep for DJs playing truly eclectic, free sets… not just house music all night long, but really everything and anything honest. From disco to boogie to jazz funk and latin… and the dancers go off ! I purposely didnt include any of my own edit/remixes. With that being said, I knew it would be summer time, my favorite time & warm sounds resonate with me most, but I also wanted to include a moody vibe as well and drop some house… a side of me that many seem not to know im into, so I close out the mix with a favorite tune of mine by my homie Eli Escobar …”Anniversary” (which is rumored to drop at the end of the summer) as well as a remix by Julio Bashmore ( a new fav producer of mine) and a few other house jams. So if you haven’t noticed, we just finished up a massive tour in support of the DJ Kicks mix we put out with Wolf+Lamb on !K7 at the end of March. After an amazing April spent criss-crossing Europe, we took the show back home to North America in May, ending with the Grand Finagle during Movement, Detroit. It was probably the best 2 months of our lives and luckily we recorded one of our favorite sets right at the end, at our gig at Footwork, Toronto for The Modern Love Affair party. The concept for the tour was the 4 of us (WLSC) playing from start to finish at each club, so we figured it was right to give you all 6 hours of this one across 2 podcasts. On The Adventures Of Soul Clap we bring you part 2, with the party already going full steam and the sexy disco vibes flowing freely. Hard to believe that we last caught up with Bobby “Booster” over two and a half years ago for Episode 38. A member of our Boston inner circle and former host of the best loft parties the city has seen since the 90′s, our man has stayed busy honing his craft in our home town. So when he hit us up with this awesome ALL VINYL disco mix to get us in the mood for springtime we jumped at the chance to welcome him back on the mothership. It’s been a rough winter here in Boston. The last few months have been a little tense, and as spring starts to fill the air there’s a hunger for renewal. Memories of block parties, cook-outs, and rooftop shenanigans are starting to make their way into my mind, and with the inspiration of these feelings, on an oddly warm Tuesday night in March with the windows open, I put together an all-vinyl selection of some sweet summer tunes that have made their way into my DJ bag over the last few years. For our latest episode we turn once again to NYC natives William Rauscher and Harry Bennet. Last time they were featured on Adventures Of Soul Clap they gave us the outstanding Night Plane podcast and this time they’re back in full effect with their latest project CCC.

For those that don’t know, the CCC edit of Beach House called Str8 2 Ur Heart made a splash on the scene over the past year getting regular play from us (we broke the tune at Sunday School for Degenerates 2010), DJ Three and many others. It made such a noise that William and Harry decided to put it on wax along with a slow dub remix from Gadi Mizrahi, but rather than give the track away to another label they decided to launch their own imprint, aptly titled CCC. DOPE!

Is it cuz you like his gangsta walk? Is it cuz you like his gangsta talk? Whatever it be, the king of G-Funk has passed and we’ve lost one of hip-hop’s greatest voices. Known for his iconic, smoothed out gangsta hooks, Nate Dogg had an uncanny knack for making lyrics about ho’s, bitches, pimps, gangstaz, 40s (of St. Ides) and blunts sound like the most beautiful things in the world. He also delivered powerful messages about friends, family and love that touched all of us. Growing up in the 90′s it didn’t get much better than Nate Dogg choruses, so let’s pour some on the ground for the homie. Rest In Peace.

In his own words… “The story behind the mix is that a friend asked me to do a dark, moody, techy mix like one i did a few years back. It gave me a chance to put together some of my fave tracks of late with some of my fave of all time. And to also put on it some track thats i may not always get the chance to play when i DJ out in clubs (unless it’s a crazy afterparty). If you’ve ever been to a good party in Boston our man 7L needs no introduction. if you’ve ever been into underground hip-hop you already know him as one half of 7L & Esoteric. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to get your hands one of the amazing Bladerunners mixes, than you also know who 7L is. If you’ve ever asked the question: who is Boston’s mixtape king? Then you’d know the answer is 7L. Here at Soul Clap HQ we don’t throw the word legend around lightly, but when it comes to 7L there’s no better word to describe the combination of skills, creativity, positivity and work ethic that has kept him at the top of Boston’s DJ world for well over a decade (this is where we also have to shout out DJ Kon and DJ Bruno for also being amazing!). So of course when the man himself handed me a stack of 5 (or was it 6?) new mix CDs on one of my last nights out in The Bean, I couldn’t wait to pop them in the deck. Luckily for me we had to drive to Montreal the next day so we got to hear all the sounds on the way (including Music To Be Murdered By, which is a whole other story), but the one that really jumped out was this genius mix-up of some of our favorite (and forgotten) soft rock jams of all time.

We know what you’re saying, “soft rock, has the Clap lost their minds?!” But fear not loyal listeners, we promise this is the perfect mix to get you in the holiday spirit. No matter what holiday it is that you’re celebrating and whoever it is that you’re spending it with, Grandmaster 7L is going to Step you Into The AM in ways your pretty little ears never imagined. You’ve probably all realized by now that we really love edits. Unfortunately, with the trend getting so popular, our ears have been bombarded with some pretty terrible renditions, both of songs that were already perfect and don’t need any editing, and of songs that are so bad they never needed to be reborn. Enter S.A.S, two guys from Birmingham (Adam Shelton & Subb-an) who caught our ear this year by making totally unique and totally party rocking edits of some of our favorite and forgotten jams from the past. We met Adam at our gig at Motion and he introduced himself by giving us a copy of Tashan’s “Chasin’ A Dream” LP, because we put one of the tracks on a podcast. Anyone who gives us a classic vinyl when we first met clearly knows his shit so we asked him to give us a podcast, and of course he delivered with a dope mix full of edits, samples and a wide range of jams that defines these boys sound. Flashback to summer. Living in Berlin and losing many days at the legendary and now sadly, closed Bar25. The thing about Bar25 was that no one really knew when the party started or ended. Wednesday til Tuesday? Probably, and lucky for us we got to be a part of the closing summer of one of the most magical places we’ve ever seen. Sure, we could wax poetic about this special place for days, but you’re better off checking out the trailer for their upcoming film about the bar. We played in various area on the grounds 3 times over the summer (including the closing, which has to be one of the craziest parties the world has ever seen), but the most magical for us was opening for Nico at the beginning of September on a rainy Monday evening.

As they say, “Monday is Sunday” and it couldn’t be more true. The bar room was almost empty when we began our 4 hour journey at 6pm. It was raining and the pounding techno all day had scared many people away, but some of us had been there for days already and there was magic in the air. What you get here is the first couple hours as we set the mood and the room fills up. We went through a selection of our favorite (mostly vinyl) tracks of the summer and then turned to each other and said “wait all this music is about love”, which really is what the summer is about. If you’ve been to London and you haven’t met Derren Smart, you’re clearly not at the right party. Or maybe you’re at the right party, but you’re slumped over unconscious in the corner. Or maybe you’re obnoxiously cliquey group of friends is keeping you from expanding and meeting cool people. Who knows, there are many reasons you may not know about Derren Smart, that is, until NOW!

We first met Derren last spring when he hosted London’s first Wolf + Lamb Experience at the Red Gallery in London. WHAT a night! The space was a large subterranean basement, tricked out with a large cursive neon sign that read “This Must Be The Place” in true Talking Heads fashion. We played, as did Gadi & Zev, No Regular Play and a special cameo by Deniz Kurtell. But throwing parties (which he’s done for years behind the scenes at the legendary T-Bar and other underground events) is only one of Derren’s talents. It’s really his incredible collection of classic Disco and his profound programing abilities which we’ve had the privilege to experience at a number of London parties and most fondly at after-the-after-the-after-parties!

So, we’ve been chasing Derren for a podcast for a while now and finally at the end of September, we got it! There had a big blowout at Fabric that night celebrating Charlie’s birthday. Room 3 completely booked with W+L artists (Thanks JUDYYYYY) with a Fabric first from Slow Hands and No Regular Play. Early in the morning found Charlie, Greg Paulus aka Mr Fantastic, Craig Richards and Dirty Derren himself going completely apeshit in one of the rooms at the Malmaison. With a laptop plugged into the rooms CD player, we celebrated one of the best mornings in ages losing ourselves in a musical battle for disco supremacy between Derren and Craig Richards! Finally when we’d had enough, this mix went on, the perfect podcast to share with you. Sorry for no track list, but there are certainly plenty of recognizable tunes on here. Not sure if we’ve said it here, but at this point it might be common knowledge that people in Leeds are a buncha nuttas. Needless to say (I mean look at that picture) our friends Paul and Mark aka Death On The Balcony are no exception. You probably know them from their awesome Cruel Banana edit on our Clap & Friends FreE.P., but these guys actually booked us our second UK gig ever when we played their Emmanuel’s Party Bucket party in Leeds. Yep, the same set we posted 3 parts of on our this here podcast last year and you can check out here, here and here. In many ways D.O.T.B. are also our brothers from other mothers as they hold down pop nights in Leeds and basically play as wide range of music as they need to survive as DJs in a small town (just like we did for so long). Now, it seems like they’re making like The Clap and outgrowing their small town roots by making some serious waves with their original productions for their Magicbag label, some awesome remixes and even a forthcoming release on Airdrop. We figured this was probably as good a time as any to have them take us on an adventure through their crazy minds of music!

Hey planet earth, its Charlie taking over this post. I know our format is typically exclusive mixes for the Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast, but we had to make an exception for Dijon. Some of you might know I went to college out on the west coast, Pitzer College to be exact, in Claremont, California. There I met a HOST of characters doing the DJ thing in and around Los Angeles and throwing generator powered desert parties on most full moons aka Moontribe Parties. Thats where i first heard of Dijon, on my 18th birthday in the desert!

Dijon and I didn’t know each other that well, I was just a big fan. He had already graduated from neighboring school Pomona College but was still hanging around with the outlawed party fraternity/sorority (frasority?) called the Nappys. Another famous DJ you might know who used to hang with the Nappy’s is Dirtybird’s Christian Martin. Now I never joined those guys (final initiation involved taking a full balloon of NO2 and getting pushed down a staircase lined with mattresses!), but I sure did get crazy with those cats because they were full on raving! In fact, it was these parties and Moontribe that got Christian Martin to convince his then teenage brother Justin Martin, to leave their hometown in Connecticut and head west.

So, past spring Justin Martin came to Boston to play at our beloved Midweek Techno with our dear friend Heidi. The party was a smash and afterwards we’re hanging at Aldie St shooting the shit and talking about California and Dijon’s name popped up. Turns out he was massively influential to both of us and we found the man on Facebook. Thats how it happened!

Whew, that was a long story so lets talk music. This podcast is really special, its a rip of Dijon’s Easy Listening mixtape (yes a TAPE, two sided, remember?) from around 1997. I swear this tape was the ultimate after-rave, ride home soundtrack until I had to sell my car and no longer had a tape deck, wack. In my opinion it perfectly captures the early deep tech house sound that was coming from labels like Guidance, Svek, Swazak and Plastic City. It was also the first place i heard Black Science Orchestra’s – New Jersey Deep, which has since become a personal anthem. Easy Listening is seamlessly mixed and perfectly programed and has brought SO much joy and chill-out vibes to my life, I’m so happy to share with you!

Dijon’s is now finishing up graduate school in Geology in Rochester, New York. He is married with a new baby (congrats Jon!) and is really brilliant and talented dude! If you’ve ever been sent a promo by Gadi Mizrahi from Wolf + Lamb you’ve probably noticed the (G$) after the filename. At first we were kind of confused but then he explained that he puts that there after he masters a track on the system at The Marcy and then we started calling it the G$ pump. Of course Gadi soon just became G$ and when he discovered a newfound love for hip-hop it seemed even more appropriate. It’s pretty surprising that a native Brooklynite only got into hip-hop later in life but there are lots of things about G$ that are surprising, like this mix, which randomly appeared in our inboxes the day we got to Berlin. Obviously we’re all massive 30 Rock fans, but it seems G$ loves Tracey Morgan so much that he made this mix, an hour long journey through deep and heavy hip-hop, trip-hop and of course Tracey Morgan. When he told us we could podcast it we pooped in the pool and we hope you’re just as excited by this totally unique creation from one of dance music’s true visionaries and of course one of our closest friends. It sure has been awhiiiile since we did a mixTape time, but when DJ Three sent me this drum & bass mix he did 1996 it seemed like the perfect way to bring it back for 2 reasons. First, because we had Three on mixTape time way back in 2008 before we even knew him personally. Second, because we’ve been loving the old school jungle/d&b sounds lately. It started with our remake of Goldie’s Inner City Life that just dropped on Crosstown Rebels, but seems to have been following us everywhere so we’ve even done our new Beatport chart with all our favorite jungle/d&b classics. Check this mix and you’ll see why!

Here’s a blurb he wrote about it for the Hallucination message board years back…

Rave culture having the musical timeline it does I had always been into drum n
bass and its various incarnations, albiet some more than others. Drum n’ bass
to me was a tempo thing rather than a specific sound, but thats another (rather
unnecessary) story.

(1995 / 1996) Genrally speaking, Drum n Bass was getting knee-deep in its
“golden era” around this time. It was finally starting to cross into other
areas and all sorts of people and artists were taking note. Richie Hawtin was
spotted at Fabio and LTJ Bukem’s “Speed” night in London. Sasha had a chart of
favorites in The Face magazine. Proverbial “outsiders” to the drum n bass scene
like Ashley Beadle and his Balistic Brothers outfit had released an excellent
drum n’ bass record on Junior Boys Own that DJ’s warmed to — the first of many
“outsider” contributions to come. Bjork dated Goldie (LOL). All these signs
of a scene and sound disocvering it was, for now, the eyes of the world.

House and Techno DJ’s from San Francisco (Markie of Wicked) to Paris
(Laurent Garnier) et al were beginning to stretch their wings and incorporate
some bits into their sets much the same way they would some electro,
dub and so on. I had experimented a bit (mostly at Florida institutions Simons
and The Firestone) myself and began to find a common aesthetic between house /
lounge-type crowds and certain drum n’ bass records. So, when i was asked by
Jask (Tampa deep house mainstay / Large Records, Soulphuric etc…) to play the
last night of his long running “Martini Jazz Thursdays” I decided to start
straight from the top with grooves i thought would work, but were certainly not
what anyone was expecting. Recorded off a TDK SA-60 with a little digital work
to fill the gap between side A & B…here’s what went down. Thanks to Jask.

mixTape Time 21: DJ Three’s Martini D&B Mix (circa 1996)

So on our latest trip to Chicago we were lucky enough to get picked up at the airport in a cherry red ’61 Chevy Impala convertible (thanks Maryrose & Elena). It’s definitely the coolest car either of us have ever been in, but what’s a cool car without a cool soundtrack?! Luckily our girls were bumping a brand new live recording of our favorite Chi-Town mixmaster, Phil Stone. If you’ve been paying attention then you know that Phil Is Ill and once again he has absolutely blasted our minds. Apparently the story is that Phil recorded this mix on a cloudy after(party)noon and when the skys opened up everyone ran outside and started dancing in the rain. For us, this beautiful blend of laid back disco grooves is absolutely perfect for all your summertime needs, especially BBQs and beaches, but most importantly a sweaty summertime bedroom! Enjoy…

For the next edition of The Adventures Of Soul Clap we’re honored to welcome two astonishing Polish creatures, formerly known as 3 Channels and always known as the hosts with the mosts, ladies and gentlemen we present to you Catz n Dogz! While we’ve been fans of their music for years it wasn’t until we stayed with Voitek during our first journey to Berlin last summer, saw the boys mixing their classic blend of house and techno at Watergate and heard bits off their stunning new album (coming this summer on Mothership) that we realized that Poles could have so much soul. From baking us apple pie to helping with the laundry to booking us at their amazing disco dance party in their home town of Stettin (best pretty girl ratio anywhere?!), these guys have proven to be two of the best hosts around. One of the privileges of programing a podcast is the ability to uncover new DJ talent. Such is the case with 23 year old Parisian, Funkalicious James. An elementary school classmate with Le Loup, these two make up the production duo Childhood ’87, featured on Aux-Rec (on the flip side of our Baker Man release) with an edit of Inner Life’s “I’m Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)”. PS, vinyl copies are still available here.

Growing up Funkalicious James was deeply influenced by his mothers jazz and R&B records as well as his cousins favorite hip-hop acts like Gang Starr and Arrested Development. Around 2004 he got into deep house going to party at places like Cheers @ The Djoon. There he made the discovery that the music of his childhood was heavily sampled and the core of this new dance music. He was hooked and set his sights on becoming a DJ.

Funkalicious’ DJ sets are self described as “a milkshake” of his childhood influences thru the filter of deep house. We dug his mix, can you?

The Adventures of Soul Clap Episode 71: Funkalicious Gunna Funk You Up

When we first made it to Made Event‘s now legendary WMC closing bash 4 years ago we we’re completely blown away. The party was still at the now defunct (and sorely missed) Pawn Shop parking lot and I’m pretty sure Sunday School was the only day of the year they opened up out there, so it was really special. It was basically way too packed with the hot ass sun cooking your ass while getting absolutely mental to the most upfront house/techno DJs in the world and boy did it leave a lasting impression. While, some people complained when the event moved to Ice Palace in ’09, I think the added grassyness and extra space outside made the new digs an even more fun place to party, plus having the inside area in a massive warehouse space is the perfect environment for slamming Adam Beyer style techno.

Needless to say, when we were asked to play Sunday School this year we were totally honored and blown away and when we found out we got the 9:30-11am outside set time we were even more excited. If you know us, you know this is pretty much our dream gig and time slot, so we immediately got to work preparing the perfect set to reach the more techno oriented crowd, but still showcase our unique sound. Saturday night we hit the sack super early, got up fresh at 6am, hit Latin Cafe 2000 for breakfast sandwiches and Cuban coffee and headed down to get in the morning time vibes. It was a bit cloudy all day but there were some amazing moments when the floaty jams brought out the sun, the crowd response was beyond anything we could have imagined and we even ended up with this here awesome recording to share with everyone! Most of all, thanks to the entire Made Event team for being super pro, all our friends for getting up early/staying up late and smiling and going crazy in front of the booth, Zoe for being Ms America, DJ T for dancing on stage the whole time and of course Betty Kang. We can’t do it without all yalls support

For obvious reasons Episode 69 is pretty important here on the mothership. So when we realized that it was coming up we thought about maybe skipping it until we could get a special Soul Clap mix ready. That was until I heard Mazda’s sound of one soul clapping mix, or more importantly, made love to Mazda’s mix and justified the perfect Episode 69. Mazda aka Audio Prophecy is a Boston-based DJ and aspiring producer who understands the importance of mature and sexy music and this style shines through on the mix, which I had to rename in honor of the occasion.

Here are words from the man himself:

The only way I could explain my relationship with music is obssessive addiction, Never satsified with what I have in hands and always looking for my next fix. It started with collecting, searching for the rare releases and then the urge to share / twist/ edit and spin followed. My message to everybody out there: It’s Ok not to fit into a particular grid or style or image. The sound of one hand clapping is dedicated to that spirit. Most of the artists on this mix have somewhat shown their middle finger to the man and did their own thing and subsequently succeeded at it. We got the deep spacey sounds of Space Ranger (former Dublex inc members), Crowdpleaser and Autodeep (future stars of deep house), to the nu-disco funk of Maurice Fulton, Lindstrom, Aeroplane and Tensnake, & the global sounds of Moodymanc and DJ Disse (Music for Dreams). No self respecting soul clap mix would come without a few left field edits, here we have bloodfire’s remix of James Brown (GAMM), and re-boots of Curtis Mayfield and D-train. The mix ends with soulful sounds of Trus’me, Rick poppa Howard and Glimpse leading to spiritual nirvana of Lightness by Dollar Mambo (newly signed to Mental Groove). You may like or dislike this mix, but please embrace it’s spirit of adventure and seek your own Musical Lightness.

Way back in November 2008 we posted a mix from 1988 by old school Boston house legend Eddie Neal with a whole back story (which proves how small the world is) and interview (which includes a major Boston dance music history lesson). Now, Eddie has hit us up again with some new recordings from the vault. This time around we travel to 1990 for a Chicago style house jackup that perfectly contextualizes the current Chicago house sound revival. Here’s what Eddie had to say:

This mix came about in the Summer of 1990. Four months prior to the mix, I left the HUB CLUB in Boston where I had served as one of the resident DJs and Promotions Manager for about two years. “The Decade Dance” was the clubs welcoming in 1990 New Year’s Eve Party. It was a big production I had planned with attention to every detail. The best club and house music from each year from 1980 to 1990 was showcased every 30 minutes in spectacular fashion with special celebrity introductions, sound effects, remixes. For me, it was about the music and the heads on the dance floor. After New Year’s the club started to veer away from its rep as an underground house music venue. It was time to go.In the months that followed, I returned to the private mobile sector, continued working in radio and helped kick-off the short-lived “Underground” in the South End. However I missed the wild Hub Club Friday and Saturday nights where I could tell a story with the music. Housemaster B is a throwback to the earlier era of underground house with a few influences of hip hop and acid.

Life sure is full of coincidences, so i guess it makes sense that we got an email from UK dance music veteran Demi asking us to air a very special mix on our podcast while we were in London in January. While he’s been a major name in the game for a long time many of our listeners might not know Demi, because we’re from different musical worlds, but his SOS crew, which also includes, Omid16B and Desyn Masiello, has always been a guiding light in the world of tech/prog house. For us SOS first came to our attention with Desyn’s superb 2004 Bedrock compilation, which led us to check out an amazing SOS performance at WMC the following year. While their sound might not line up exactly with where we’re at these days, there’s no doubt these guys are DJ’s DJs, with impeccable selection and skill that shine through no matter what your taste.

So now you’re probably wondering how we ended up with a Demi mix on The Adventures Of Soul Clap. Apparently he’s been following our podcast for awhile now and felt it was the perfect home for this awesomely eclectic masterpiece of a mix. What makes this episode even more special is that the mix is a tribute to his friend and influential Londoner Jonny Rhythm who recently passed away and who’s memory lives on through this music.

Here’s what Demi says: “The mix is a reflection of some very special and personal moments shared with him and the eclectic tastes we shared. The mix was a labor of love and ended up being a work in progress for a year because of the varied sounds and samples/snips spliced and put together.”

We first met William Rauscher of Night Plane at the Marcy Hotel outside in the yard. It had been a long night and it was a beautiful Brooklyn morning and when we were introduced, his name immediately rang a bell. Wasn’t he the Resident Advisor writer who did the label of the month feature on Wolf + Lamb? He was! And wasn’t he the guy who reviewed the Love Light Edits EP on Wolf + Lamb Black? YES! Oh and didn’t he give us only 3 1/2 stars??? Well turns out William is a tough critic and this we can appreciate, but we told him “it was nice to meet you, but we only give this experience 3 1/2 stars”.

All ball busting aside, William is more than just a writer/blogger, he is also a very talented producer. His project Night Plane sounds like a stunning combination of new disco, house, jazz, rock and psychedelia that couldn’t be more timely as the lines of dance music continue to blur. Samples, synths and tons of reverb, William’s music is really impressive and when we received his mix of ALL ORIGINAL material, we knew we had podcast gold.

When it comes to the few North Americans seriously stacking their discographies in recent years, few can compete with Jonny White. Representing Toronto, Jonny has been just slaying the Techno/House genre with releases on his own No. 19 Music, Ripperton’s Perspectiv Records and a ton of remix work including a feature alongside Tiefschwarz for Crosstown Digital Rebels. Unfortunately we’ve still never met face to face, however we’re already quite familiar with his music after discovering his after hours treasure “Rainsong” (No. 19 Music) back in 2008 and what a tune!

We asked Jonny to do a podcast a while back and this one came together live at his pad in Toronto New Years Day after a night of madness! Right before Thanksgiving we did a mini US tour of New York, Chicago and Detroit and it felt pretty amazing. Everywhere we went we debuted new Soul Clap music and every time people went crazy. It really blew our minds to get such a great response in America, especially at such an American time as Thanksgiving. I’m not going to get into a discussion about the moral implications of t-day, but I will say it’s a special time for family and friends to get together here in the states so it meant alot for us to get so much love in our home country. Now, before it’s too late we wanted to give you, our beloved listeners all over the world a taste of what our pre t-day tour sounded like. This recording is the first hour of our 3 hour, early morning set at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel for Airdrop’s Late Supper. It features a bunch of exclusive new Soul Clap music, some of which has been released, but mostly is forthcoming and never coming out.
