It’s The Reef out on DVD from Image Entertainment. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

The waters of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef are unmatched in beauty and danger. Clear and blue, teeming with life – they tempt adventurers from the world over. Based on a true event, The Reef is the gripping story of a group of friends on a yachting trip who find themselves facing the terrifying choice of “sink or swim.”

Ship delivery man Luke (Damian Walsh-Howling) is accompanied by four friends (Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering, Zoe Naylor, Mark Simpson) as he charts a yacht to its new owner. Along the way, their ship is ripped open by the coral reefs hiding just below the ocean’s surface. They are forced to choose: stay on board with slim hope of rescue, or swim twelve miles to the nearest island…through shark-infested waters. Those that abandon ship are faced with the race of their lives, for as soon as they enter the water a Great White shark catches their scent and the white-knuckled chase is on!

The Reef was shot in Australia using real sharks and including incredible underwater footage for a pulse-pounding, visually stunning experience. It’s The Thomas Hardy Collection, hitting DVD from A&E. And here’s what they have to say for themselves…

This August, A&E Home Entertainment serves up a newly-packaged set, sure to thrill fans of sweeping literary adaptations and anglophiles alike with THE THOMAS HARDY COLLECTION. In the spirit of A&E’s acclaimed literary adaptations, like Pride & Prejudice and Emma, which have sold over 2.5 million units comes this 2 disc collection featuring two of the beloved author’s most enduring works: TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES and THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE. Featuring gorgeous on-location filming and renowned international casts, including Ciaran Hinds (Road to Perdition, Rome), James Purefoy (Rome) and Justine Waddell (Mansfield Park), both of these epic adaptations offer sweeping romance and drama on a grand scale.

TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES
Her luminous beauty blazing against the bleak background of rural Victorian England, Tess Durbeyfield (Justine Waddell, “Great Expectations”) is one of literature’s best-loved and most memorable heroines. Violated by one man and forsaken by another, she refuses to remain a victim. But her struggle to endure despite the abandonment of her true love– and her desperate attempt to attain happiness– propel Tess toward a tragic end.

THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE
Destitute and drunken, Michael Henchard is an itinerant farmhand who sells his wife and daughter to a sailor in a moment of alcohol-fueled desperation. So begins THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE, Thomas Hardy’s enduring classic with Ciaran Hinds (Jane Eyre) as the tragic, tormented Henchard. Decades after his fateful decision, now reformed and respectable, he is offered a chance at redemption when his wife re-appears with her daughter. But the reunion’s promise is soon tarnished by a web of jealousy, deceit and wounded pride.

Win the Audiobook of Maine!

Widge — Mon, 01 Aug 2011 14:04:58 +0000

It’s Maine by Courtney Sullivan, read by Anne Marie Lee and on unabridged CD from Random House Audio. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

It is the final summer in Maine for the Kelleher family, and three generations converge on the cottage at Kittery Point, all dreaming of bare feet, cocktails at sunset, and that magical ocean air. Alice is the matriarch of the family, a regular fixture at morning mass, and an equally regular fixture in the wicker chair on the sun porch where she spends all afternoon drinking manhattans and smoking cigarettes. Maggie is Alice’s granddaughter, a 32-year-old writer who has just realized she’s pregnant, a fact she has yet to tell her off-again boyfriend. Maggie’s mother, Kathleen, is the prodigal daughter, camped out in Arizona, wishing desperately to avoid the annual Kelleher showdown. So that leaves Ann Marie, Alice’s daughter-in-law, long-suffering martyr and avid dollhouse collector, to keep this chaotic household in order. Together these four women assemble on the picturesque scrap of land along the Atlantic Ocean–a piece of land won on a bet generations ago, a piece of land Alice has private plans for after her death. Over the course of this summer, long-held secrets are revealed, embarrassing crushes bloom, and gallons of vodka are consumed. While Alice must face the truth about her sister, Maggie has to decide what to do about Gabe and the baby, Kathleen comes face to face with the woman she most fears, and Ann Marie desperately tries to maintain the image of a perfect family–an image rapidly deteriorating in that magical ocean air. A sprawling, wickedly funny novel of sibling rivalry, infidelity, alcoholism and Catholicism, Maine is an irresistible family drama, a captivating portrait of three generations of women, and a perfect summer read.

Win Guns, Germs & Steel on Audiobook CD!

Widge — Sat, 30 Jul 2011 01:17:22 +0000

It’s Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, read by Doug Ordunio, as an unabridged audiobook from Random House Audio. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Guns, Germs and Steel is a brilliant work answering the question of why the peoples of certain continents succeeded in invading other continents and conquering or displacing their peoples. Until around 11,000 BC, all peoples were still Stone Age hunter/gatherers. At that point, a great divide occurred in the rates that human societies evolved. In Eurasia, parts of the Americas, and Africa, farming became the prevailing mode of existence when indigenous wild plants and animals were domesticated by prehistoric planters and herders. As Jared Diamond vividly reveals, the very people who gained a head start in producing food would collide with preliterate cultures, shaping the modern world through conquest, displacement, and genocide. The paths that lead from scattered centers of food to broad bands of settlement had a great deal to do with climate and geography. But how did differences in societies arise? Why weren’t native Australians, Americans, or Africans the ones to colonize Europe? Diamond dismantles pernicious racial theories tracing societal differences to biological differences. He assembles convincing evidence linking germs to domestication of animals, germs that Eurasians then spread in epidemic proportions in their voyages of discovery. In its sweep, Guns, Germs and Steel encompasses the rise of agriculture, technology, writing, government, and religion, providing a unifying theory of human history as intriguing as the histories of dinosaurs and glaciers.

Win The PJs Season 2 on DVD!

Widge — Fri, 29 Jul 2011 08:43:03 +0000

It’s the second season of The PJs, out on DVD from Lionsgate. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

Bring the Stubbs family home this July as the three-time Emmy® winning* animated series, “The PJs,” comes to DVD from Lionsgate. The PJs: Season 2, available for the very first time on DVD, reunites fans with their favorite tenants of the Hilton-Jacobs projects. An animated comedy ahead of its time, creators Eddie Murphy (the Shrek series), Larry Wilmore (TV’s “The Office”) and Steve Tompkins (TV’s “The Bernie Mac Show”) marked the series with biting wit. Featuring the voice talent of Murphy, Loretta Devine (For Colored Girls), Ja’net DuBois (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle) and Pepe Serna (The Black Dahlia), the two-disc set contains 18 episodes from the second season.

A typical American family, the Stubbs are just trying to get by in their hometown of Detroit. Man of the house, Thurgood (voiced by Murphy), serves as the chief superintendent for a city housing project, while his wife, Muriel (voiced by Devine) keeps the dysfunctional family together.

We’ve got three copies of the DVD set to give away. Want to win one? Huzzah. Here’s how that happens: you enter using the form below. Remember you can enter once a day. If we draw your name when the contest ends, you snag it! Good luck!

Win the Audiobook of Robopocalypse!

Widge — Sun, 24 Jul 2011 13:17:47 +0000

It’s Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson, read unabridged by Mike Chamberlain. It’s out from Random House Audio and here’s what they have to say for themselves:

Roughly twenty years from now, an unprecedented high-level artificial intelligence known as Archos comes on-line and kills its creator. This first act of betrayal leads Archos to gain control over the global network of computers, machines, and technology that regulate everything from transportation, utilities, defense, and communication. In the early months, sporadic glitches are noticed by a handful of unconnected humans, but most of us are unaware of the growing rebellion until it is far too late. In the span of fifteen minutes, at a moment known later in history as Zero Hour, every mechanical device in our world rebels against us, setting off the Robot War that both decimates and–for the first time in history–unites humankind. Through a series of interconnected narratives, video feeds, interrogations and reports, Daniel Wilson vividly creates the complex and unforgettable epic struggle of civilization’s battle against the machines, beginning with the first eruption of robot rebellion to five years later, with humans on the very brink of extinction.
