My question is this:

How Religion Mormon influences Utah culture, specifically in the capital Salt Lake City?

I'll be very grateful for your feedback as it will let my work more realistic, because all the information I got on the internet are very evasive, and it is best to ask someone who has a deeper knowledge of the Mormon Religion to get some information on any internet.

Since I thank if I answered!

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anonymous: My daughter has been receiving advice from her friends and their parents. They tell her to go with her gut and do what she wants to do. I try eplaining the diffrence between that feeling and the still small voice of the holy spirit. Any ideas how to explain? They come from a new age perspective. I come from a christian/inactive LDS background.

Answer by El Santo Gringo: Hi sister. Thanks for your interesting comment. Gut feelings need to be carefully considered. Sometimes the Spirit can communicate with us through what some would call a "gut feeling." In thes cases, the feeling will be accompanied by the "quickening of the mind" or the "burning in the bosom" that we often associate with the Spirit.

On the other hand, our guts can also lead us to do all sorts of terrible and stupid things. So many have the idea that they should do what "feels right," but the truth is that we should do what is right by following the commandments that God has given us. Some think they should follow their hearts, but the truth is we should lead our hearts in the paths God wants us to tread.

Life is not a wandering journey. It's a journey with a fixed destination. We should strive to identify that destination, and then we should actively, intentionally move in its direction. I hope this answer helps.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

As long as it is done in the proper fashion and for the proper reason. Sometimes our 'gut' will tell us to things that are against the Lord's principles. For example, if her 'gut' is telling her that she should get a flower tattoo instead of a butterfly one, it is not of the spirit since we know that we have been cautiond against getting tattoos. But if her 'gut' is telling her 'don't get a tattoo even though all your friends are doing it', then that would be of the Spirit.

The question that she should always ask herself when deciding whether or not to 'go with her gut feeling' is whether or not it is against the Lord.

This article may help:

https://www.lds.org/Ensign/2011/02/learning-to-hear-and-understand-the-spirit?lang=eng

This family home evening lesson may have some ideas for you as well.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Belinda: So about 2 years ago now I found out my husband of 10 years was having an affair with my best friend. It was devastating. I moved out and took our 5 kids and lived a year without him trying to see if we could work it out in counseling. I have decided to stay with him and we have been doing really well. We are much stronger as a couple. My x best friend never once said she was sorry for doing this but I have moved on and forgave her. I feel with the amount of lies she told to pull off the affair and that she made it seem like her marriage was perfect that she may have some type problem I did not know about so I have empathy for her and just hope she has gotten herself some kind of help so she can stop making her life look like its perfect and face so real issues she has had. I still have to see her once in awhile even though we moved about 10 miles away from our old house. It's always so uncomfortable for me to see her. Is this normal. We shared many of the same friends which many knew of nothing that went on. They all still think she has the perfect marriage and life. It messes with my head because I don't mind if people know the real me. I am happy with who I am.

One of the hardest things is she acted like a strong LDS woman through the whole affair. My husband did not. He acted like he was struggling with his testimony. She continued with her callings and just acted like nothing. When the affair came out she still acted like nothing happened and still held her calling.

Answer by Anonymous: Belinda, I understand what you have been going through. I've seen this type of hypocrisy before as well. It is even more painful when it is by a supposedly good member of the church. The thing that keeps me going is I have to tell myself that the gospel of Christ is true and the teaching are true and correct. And I need not worry about others but worry about myself and my family. Try to look beyond their works or doings and try to see the good in them.

I wish you well. Good luck and keep the faith.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

I wish someone would connect with you, a third party (bishop) and let you know if your best fried is at least working on what she has to do. Repent or whatever. Also, 20 years ago, I would have been in the roll of your best friend. She will think about what she has done over the years. It will weigh heavy on her heart. I remember getting a visit from the wife of the man I had the affair with. She was incredibly nice. We talked along time. She told me I took away her happiness and broke her heart. She said she forgave me, but would not be my friend. Classy lady. The relationship ended badly when it became apparent that he and I had very different views on the Law of Chastity. You can imagine how appalled I was when I discovered that this man continued in his calling for twenty months after I reported his behaviour to his Stake leaders. I emailed with my Bishop about the matter. Perhaps his response will help you.

He said, "It is true that I have seen many wonderful miracles occur through Church discipline. On the other hand, I have also seen a few cases where things seemed to go awry. This seems to be such a case, and I understand your point and your pain. While church discipline is administered generally by good people who are trying their best to do what is right, I would urge you to consider the everlasting and perfect justice of God. This is the thing after all that will count. You can have perfect assurance and peace in knowing that He will judge with righteous judgement in this matter... Sometimes it can be a struggle to let go of wrongs. In my own experience, it is particularly difficult when the wrong has come when I am doing right. At times like this... I am persuaded to remember our Savior and how that He suffered so much wrong and abuse, which was not random abuse, but for the very reason that He was in the right. He suffered that irony patiently and and with humility. He asks His followers to do the same."

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Testimony by Rommel: No questions really. I just want to share the sweet and lovely feeling of having heard the song: "Oh How Lovely Was The Morning"! It gives me always the strength and assurance that what occurred in the spring of 1820 was a reality. A reality that God, our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ did appear to the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr and revealed things that had been withheld since the Great Apostasy. I know it's true and I know that the world will be dependent upon that knowledge if they want to be saved eternally in the heavens!!!

See the original testimony

See all testimonies

Bear your testimony

Updates by Email

Question by Anonymous: "Without the necessary preparation, the sacred promises and symbols would not be appreciated."- I pulled this quote from the section of the website on Temples; I understand some may not be ready to enter another religion's grounds with respect for it, but why is this quote so unspecific? If anything I would enjoy reading more about the promises and symbols to gain a better understanding of how much this religion means to it's members, and so that I can see something outside of the path I have always been on since I was born. Also, I have some great friends who are Mormon and all that have great character. It would be very interesting to see how they have grown up through their religion.

Answer by Kel: I think it's so beautiful that you are interested in learning about those things that are so special to us and hope that you continue to investigate it. I am one who truly loves sharing my beliefs. However, I try not to share too much too soon. Imagine a small child asking a parent where babies come from. The parent, knowing the child knows nothing about reproduction, will not start with a detailed explanation of all the facts surrounding the subject. The child would not understand, to say least, and would maybe even be left confused and uncomfortable. Maybe we would tell the child that when two people love each other, God blesses them with a baby. As the child matures and develops a greater mental capacity, we would reveal more of the truth.

Often times, people I know hear about a certain LDS belief and misunderstand or misjudge it out of context and I always think, if only you understood 'x' and 'y', 'z' would make so much sense to you.

The more accepting society becomes of ungodly behavior, the more bizarre our beliefs appear, and are more difficult to understand or accept. Years ago, to hear that living with a person before marriage is wrong, would have been normal and widely agreed upon. Today, some may be ridiculed for believing it's even possible to accurately choose a spouse without having lived with them first.

The idea is to build upon our knowledge, starting with the basics first, which prepare us for more complex truth :)

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

I had spent many hours caring for her. In those last precious hours we spent together, she told me many things about her life that were so dear to her that she had not shared them with other people, even other family members, because she knew that they did not have the knowledge or the understanding to hold those memories and thoughts precious and private. We had conversations that I would not hesitate to say were of a sacred nature. Those conversations I have shared in full with only one other person - my husband. I have shared small portions with other people who are dear to me and who were dear to my grandmother, people like my mother, my daughter. But because they did not have the privilege of gaining my grandmother's trust on those matters, I cannot share with them exactly what we talked about as she lay dying. My grandmother entrusted me with that knowledge, and I fully intend on honouring her wishes in that regard.

For Latter-Day Saints, worship inside our temples is a lot like the experience I have just described. When we feel we are ready, and when our local and area leaders agree, we can become privileged to enter a holy temple and learn more about the nature of God, ourselves, our world. It would be breaking a sacred trust to share that knowledge with others who do not have the same understanding. That can only be found in those who have a testimony in everything we hold dear.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Samuel: I wanted to ask a question about the church's teachings regarding modesty. It seems obvious to me that modesty is not a fixed standard: the use of long hair and a beard were symbols of maturity in years past (Brigham Young, for example), but today most Mormons are clean-shaven.

How do you explain that things that were considered immodest in the past are now acceptable in the church? For example, now young women use pants that are fairly tight, don't cover their arms, etc. I've been reading what the leaders of the church wrote in the 60s and 70s, and I'm pretty sure the standard of modesty was much stricter back then.

In other words, what do you think Spencer W Kimball would have thought if he'd seen some of our young women today, dressing the way they do? Do you think in the future the church's teachings on modesty will continue to change according to changing social norms? Please don't think I'm a fanatic. In fact, I'm very opposed to fundamentalism. Thanks.

Answer by Melissa: I agree with El Santo Gringo's answer to this question. You can also read the church's guidelines on modesty in the "For The Strength of Youth" pamphlet on lds.org

As with all things, we are given guidelines, but it is up to us to decide whether we are going to follow them or not. Modesty is one that many people can view differently. I always try to err on the side of dressing "too modest" which I don't really think is possible versus, what can I get away with wearing before I become immodest.

Again, though, the reasons for doing this are not to prove anything to anyone, but more to prove my devotion to God and his teachings. I do it because I want to dress in a way that is pleasing to Him.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anonymous: "Without the necessary preparation, the sacred promises and symbols would not be appreciated."- I pulled this quote from the section of the website on Temples; I understand some may not be ready to enter another religion's grounds with respect for it, but why is this quote so unspecific? If anything I would enjoy reading more about the promises and symbols to gain a better understanding of how much this religion means to it's members, and so that I can see something outside of the path I have always been on since I was born. Also, I have some great friends who are Mormon and all that have great character. Thanks for the question. I confess that that phrase confused me a bit as well. I went ahead and edited that answer to avoid confusion in the future.

Mormons believe that a religious ceremony (ordinance) called a "sealing" is essential so families can be together even after death. It seems obvious to me that members of all families will continue to love each other after death, but for them to continue to progress spiritually as a family, the sealing ordinance is critically important.

It's best to be sealed in this life, but people can be sealed vicariously after death if they didn't have the opportunity while living. Truth be told, at this point I suspect more people have been sealed vicariously than have ever been sealed while living.

Best of luck to you.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anónimo: I waste all my time on things that are useless, like social networks online. I think it really is an addiction. I know I should focus more on the Scriptures, but no matter how hard I try to free myself of my addiction, I can't do it. I feel so distant from my Savior. In recent days, I've been depressed. I feel like this depression is result of using my time unwisely. I feel like I really need someone to remind me what to do. What should I do? How can I feel closer to God?

Answer by Pamela Bonta: I don't know you or your circumstances. But it sounds to me like you are lonely. One of the saddest things about our modern world is the disconnect that people have from other people. Texting, email, facebook... All are good tools for keeping in touch with people, but when the printed word takes the place of face-to-face contact it can lead to loneliness, depression, and a loss of self-worth.

May I ask you some questions? Do you attend all of your church meetings? Do you participate in social events at your church? Do you serve others? Do you have family nearby?

I have been in similar circumstances to you. In order to break the cycle of loneliness that I was in, I started going to every church event that I could, I volunteered twice a week at the Bishop's Storehouse, I made a point of using some of my time online to keep in touch with cousins and other relatives who lived far away from me, I joined a social group of people with like interests, and I started spending more time with my family. I also set times of when I was going to be online - my limit for social media, for example, was twice a day - and I kept track of how much time I was spending my days.

I hope some of these suggestions will help you. God bless.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anónimo: If a member of the church had an abortion six years ago while she was inactive, but has decided to come back to the church, has truly repented, and has decided to confess her sins, what consequences can she expect? Can she have a second chance in the church? After so many years of being less active, can she still ask for help from her leaders? Thanks for your help. I really need to know what advice to give my friend.

Answer by Pamela Bonta: The church's goal is to help people come unto Christ through repenting of their sins. As such, our church leaders are always there for those who have a sincere desire to repent. The Church's beliefs about abortion are very clear (http://www.lds.org/topics/abortion?lang=eng) but it's beliefs about the ability of people to change their lives through the repentance process is also clear. In some cases, the repentance process could mean counselling, disfellowhip or excommunication. This is not meant as a punishment, but as a healing process if the person stays true to their desire to do whatever is required to return to good standing within the church.

Some things that may be considered by church leaders as they help your friend work through this could include: Why was she inactive? What was her frame of mind during this time period? What was the reaction of the boy involved? What resources outside of the church did your friend have? Was there a medical reason that would justify an abortion? Was your friend underage or still living with her parents, and if so, what was their reaction as well as the reaction of the Father's parents? Are the boy, his parents, and her parents members of the church?

Thanks.

Answer by Pamela Bonta: The issue of facial hair is separate from the one of modesty. Interstingly, the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper recently had an article on beards in LDS culture.
Question by Anónimo: Will our physical body always be like it is now, or will it change in the resurrection? The truth is I don't like how I look physically, and I hope I don't have to spend eternity this way. Also, what does the church think about plastic surgery? At school, there's a bully that picks on me because of my appearance, and boys never talk to me either. To tell you the truth, I'm pretty frustrated by the whole thing. That's why want to know if my appearance will improve in the resurrection. Thanks for your answers.

Answer by Pamela Bonta: Alma 40:23 tell us that when we are resurrected our bodies will be in their "proper and perfect frame". Our bodies are the temples of our spirits and as such, we should strictly follow the Word of Wisdom and other guidelines set forth by the church to ensure that our own personal temple is in the best condition it can be in. There is no official church policy on plastic surgery.

It seems to me that the opinions of others are affecting your self-esteem. Rise above those who are giving you difficulties. Do not let them make you feel like you are less than you are.
Question by Anónimo: Why is it that anciently there were 12 apostles but now there are 14 apostles and the prophet? Isn't the church supposed to be the same today as it was in Christ's time?

Answer by Pamela Bonta: The first mention of there being twelve apostles comes from Paul, and is only mentioned once by him. He also wrote of there being other apostles who were called by God as he was: Barnabas, Silas, Apollos, Andronicus, Timothy, and Junia.

It is interesting that the Gospels differ in who the original Apostles were. Both Matthew and Mark list Thaddeus as an Apostle, but Luke lists 'Judas the son of James'. The Gospel of John does not give a list of the Apostles, and gives names not included in the other Gospels (Nathanael, Thomas Didymus) and James son of Alphaeus, Matthew and Simon the Zealot are not mentioned at all. Some gospels name Matthew as the tax collector who was asked to be a disciple by Christ; others say his name was Levi.

In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Mary of Magdala was also an Apostle, and is called 'the Apostle to the Apostle': Christ gave her mission to proclaim the risen Lord to the other Apostles.

You may also want to read about Apostles in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism. http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Apostle

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

The problem is, now I'm a little confused because sometimes I go with him to the Catholic Church, and at other times I go to the Mormon church. My daughters are becoming less interested in going to either church. I'm not sure how to guide them when I myself am confused.
Question by : Good afternoon. Is it true that alcohol is prohibited in the Mormon church? Regardless, I don't drink alcohol. I stopped drinking five months ago. This Sunday I visited one of your churches near my house, and two missionaries visited me today. I want to find in the church the spiritual peace that's been lacking in my life all these years. I want to have new friends, and to feel like I'm part of the church family. I want a community that makes me feel like a valuable and important child of God.

This last Friday I ended my relationship with a member of your church named Yanni. Things just didn't work out. We live far from each other, and her studies and our work made it impossible. She did teach me some about your church, however. I ask God to help me overcome the pain of the breakup and to help me find a companion I can love. Frankly, these days I need a lot of motivation. Can you give me any advice?

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

LDS.org states, "People who have died without these essential gospel ordinances may receive those ordinances through the work done in temples. Acting in behalf of ancestors and others who have died, Church members are baptized and confirmed, receive the endowment, and participate in the sealings of husband to wife and children to parents."

For those whom it is not possible, we believe that a kind and loving Heavenly Father will see that all works out to the benefit of those who are faithful. I, for example, have a 20 year old whom I am not sealed to, as her father and I were never married and were only together for about 3 years. Nor am I sealed to my 8 year old step-daughter, as she is sealed to her biological mother. Heavenly Father will ensure that what should be, will be.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anonymous: Hi, what do Mormons believe happens to families that are not sealed? I read on here that "Your family is still your family in heaven but love Is the eternity" I'm confused. Could you please explain the Mormon belief on this? Thanks!

Answer by Jeff: Anonymous, I haven't read the answer that includes that phrase, so I can't speak to what that person was talking about. However, the short answer to your question is that those who are not sealed cannot become like our Heavenly Parents, receiving all They so desperately desire to give us. As such, those who accept only part of God's plan will only receive part of those eternal blessings that are predicated on that acceptance. This portion will still be more beautiful and amazing that we can currently comprehend, but it will nonetheless be incomplete, compared to what they could have had.

Temples are considered houses of God, places of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world.

Now, here's the long answer: thanks to the restoration of temples and the proxy ordinances performed therein, everyone--absolutely everyone--will have the opportunity to accept the gospel and receive the sealing ordinances. Yes, some will reject it, but no one will be condemned without first having make a conscious decision to accept or reject the Savior and His gospel. Thus, it ultimately doesn't matter whether or not a person had the opportunity to be sealed while in mortality; that person will have the opportunity eventually.

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

Question by Anonymous: Can I still join the church If I'm not a virgin?

Answer by Jeff: Anonymous, That's a great question. First of all, I'll assume you're talking about having had sex outside of marriage? Obviously within the bonds of matrimony, sex is fully authorized and even encouraged by our Heavenly Father and His Church. But if you're speaking of extramarital sex, the answer is still yes, you most certainly can.

One of the most wonderful blessings our Heavenly Father has given us is the gift of repentance through the Atonement of His Son, Jesus Christ. No matter what you‘ve done in the past, Christ can forgive you for those sins. By covenanting with Him through baptism, this forgiveness should become even more full in your life: not that He forgives you any more nor less, but that the Gift of Holy Ghost will help you more fully experience the blessings that that forgiveness brings.

In short, Anonymous, you absolutely can join the Church. The only requirement for that is a determination to forsake your sins--whatever they may be--and follow Him in all that you do.

Hope that helps! :-)

See the original question

Answer this question

See all questions

See all answers to this question

Ask a question

Updates by Email

To realize this special ceremony, do I need to become a Mormon? Or do I just need to understand and know what the Book of Mormon teaches?

Answer by Pamela Bonta: You would need to become a Latter-Day Saint in order to be sealed in the temple while still alive. This is the beginning of what we call Celestial Marriage, being married for 'time and all eternity', not just 'until death you part.' This ordinance is the most important of all our ordinances (religious ceremonies). Mixed-religion marriages can work, but statistics show that even though people in the LDS faith tend to have a lower divorce rate than the general population, 40% of those marriages that involve one LDS and one non-LDS person end in divorce.
