Recently, Active Endpoints CTO Dr. Michael Rowley had the pleasure of participating on a panel at MassTLC’s Software Development Summit. Moderated by North Bridge’s Michael Skok, Michael joined tech leaders Andrew Phillips, PMC Member, jclouds and Stefan Piesche, CTO, Constant Contact, to discuss the implications of application development in the cloud. The panel tackled issues including interoperability challenges, speed and agility vs. flexibility and platform-as-a-service, or PaaS. As you would imagine, the discussion was lively and the panel fielded many questions from the audience.

Watch the replay of the panel discussion for yourself and read about Michael’s insights from the event.

Recently our CTO, Dr. Michael Rowley, was invited to present at SPLASH 2011, the ultimate conference for tech academics. Michael unveiled guidance trees, a new concept that is best described as a mixture of decision trees and workflows. Guidance trees form the foundation of our latest product, Cloud Extend for Salesforce. They make it easy for non-tech folks to develop sales guides right inside Salesforce, no technical training or IT skills required.

Take a few minutes to hear Michael’s talk, as he presents a new programming paradigm for non-programmers. Details are in the attached media alert.

I didn’t believe it was possible, until I saw it with my own eyes. Not content with launching a fantastic productivity solution for Salesforce.com two weeks ago, we managed to release three other new items into the wild this week as well.

First on the agenda is ActiveVOS 8.0.5. Although this is mainly a point release, we’ve fixed a couple of defects and polished a few of the features. If you’re an ActiveVOS customer you should have received an email from our highly skilled support staff by now, giving you details of how to download the update. If it hasn’t arrived in your inbox just yet, follow this link to download the packages.

Second, we made an update to our ActiveVOS add-on product, Socrates. Although we released version 1.0 a little over six weeks ago, our dedicated engineers have been working to implement many of the positive suggestions we received from early customers. The Socrates core that you know and love remains the same, but we’ve reworked much of the end-user interface to improve visibility and navigation. To be honest, there was a whole host of UI improvements, so let me just point out some of the more noticeable accomplishments:

Rich Data Input Controls: Support for date, time and date-time, text area, masked fields for phone and social security numbers.

Customizable Themes: Support for customized themes that match your own corporate look and feel.

Guidance Tree Tagging: Guidance trees can be organized by topic in the Home tab. Each guidance tree can be tagged with an unlimited number of terms.

Enhanced Search: The editor now includes a very intuitive search box that locates any text on the canvas or inside any instruction box.

Improved Screen Step Form Editor: Screen steps can host data fields inside the instructions area.

Auto-Step Screen Generation: Screen steps can be automatically generated based on the automated step inputs.

Expanded Browser Support: Support for Firefox 4 and IE 9.

Well done to our development and quality engineers. They really are a talented bunch.

The third big item is an upgrade to our Socrates Instant Trial with the new 1.1 enhancements. We strongly encourage you to see them for yourself. Just login here. It’s extremely easy to try and so I strongly encourage you to see it for yourself. In addition there’s also a new tutorial too!

So there you go. As a marketing manager I’ve violated everything I learned. I should have given you just ONE call to action, but instead I’ve given you three. So go and download ActiveVOS 8.0.5 and Socrates 1.1 today, but also don’t forget to try the new Socrates Instant Trial. You won’t be disappointed.

Today, Active Endpoints announced the availability of Socrates. Socrates dramatically changes the way IT and domain experts collaborate to create prescriptive applications quickly and easily. The power of Socrates is that it allows a domain expert to design and deploy a screenflow‐based application in minutes, with no training or technical skills. Screenflow‐based applications include both question oriented workflows and automated services required to complete a task for a specific job function in the most productive manner possible. The innovation within the underlying technology of Socrates is that it provides a real and tangible breakthrough in ease of use, and is so unique it has a patent pending.

Active Endpoints, Inc., a leading platform provider for building custom, service-oriented business process applications, today announced total revenue bookings more than tripled in the third quarter of 2010 over the same period in 2009. The company achieved record revenue bookings for both direct software licenses and support revenue. Rapid growth continued in all major geographies and industries, especially within the government, telecommunications and financial services sectors. Notable customers include Qvantel, a Finland-based services provider to the telecommunications industry, and the United Kingdom’s Meteorological Office.

Another major milestone in the quarter was the release of ActiveVOS™ 8.0 business process management system (BPMS), the latest version of the company’s flagship product. Highlights of ActiveVOS 8.0 include support for Business Process Management Notation (BPMN), the addition of swimlanes, support for BPMN 2.0 boundary events, new data access integration capabilities, improved deployment management and expanded task management. The combination of these new capabilities improves the ability for all stakeholders – project managers, application architects, solutions architects and developers– to utilize ActiveVOS for designing, developing and deploying mission-critical, custom process applications even more effectively.

Download the Active Endpoints press release below for more details.

The system will allow itfc to remotely interact with and update third-party systems, as well as its own internal technology, to help clients benefit from better workflow efficiencies.

The new solution will sit alongside the company’s current media asset management system Mediaflex, and archiving system Front Porch Digital. Together they will enable itfc to seamlessly integrate workflows across many different, and previously incompatible, broadcast systems.

Active Endpoints, Inc., the leader in affordable, service-oriented BPM that development teams love, today announced that John Cingari has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer, Tyler Drolet as Chief Financial Officer, and Henry Ancona, who has served on the boards of Pegasystems, Computervision (acquired), and OneSource Information Services (acquired), to the Board of Directors. In addition, René Bonvanie, Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Palo Alto Networks and former Oracle, SAP, Veritas, and Serena Software executive, joined the Board of Directors in February of this year.

These industry veterans, who have created and managed both rapidly growing private and public companies, joined the company because of Active Endpoints’ unique vision to deliver affordable, service-oriented BPM in order to take advantage of strong demand in this segment of the large and growing BPM market.

The company continues to show significant traction, confirming customers want an alternative to traditional, complex and expensive BPMS’s. For example, revenues grew over 100% in the 1st half 2010 compared to the 1st half of 2009. In addition, the customer base continues to expand in all geographic regions and industries, including Telecommunications (Tele2), Media and Entertainment (itfc), Government (Naval Research Labs), and Financial Services/Insurance (Desjardins General Insurance Group).

Western Governors University is an online university that was facing student management challenges as it continued to grow at a significant pace. The university is in a rapid growth state, and was looking for a BPM solution, one that would be based on standards and could incorporate human tasks with automated processes.

The IT organization at WGU launched a search for a BPM system that was standards-based, supported a services-oriented architecture and easily deployed and maintained on their own. After considering several of the other solutions (including JBoss jBPM and coding a solution themselves), WGU selected the ActiveVOS business process management system (BPMS) from Active Endpoints.

This Upside Research Implementation Brief takes a closer look at the university, its challenges, and its decision to select a model-driven BPMS over a set of non-integrated propriety tools as the foundation for its SOA architecture. It also examines the business impact of its BPM deployment.

Download the Active Endpoints Press Release below for more details.

Today, we are at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco. We’ve dressed up actors as prisoners of SOA Suite 11g. We’ve handing out cards that contain the 11 things to think about when considering SOA Suite 11g and an invite to our social media meetup Tuesday, October 13. Here are the details.

We’re having fun. In the video below, you can see that people are enjoying the humor and taking the time to read our “11 things to consider before using Oracle SOA Suite 11g.” They’re also posing with our prisoners and shooting video and photos. So, we expect a great turnout tomorrow at the meetup. Remember: you can win an iPod nano for the best photo/video of the prisoners at the meeting. The judges are the audience. So, join us for some drinks, snacks and fun.

Check out some of the video and photos below.

First, we “cowboy up” at a Starbucks, then hit the streets before dawn to get a head start on liberation from SOA Suite 11g. Reactions are positive…from the woman who stands on the street corner reading the 11 things to consider about SOA Suite to the person complimenting our costumes:

The look of relief on a newly-liberated attendee:

Today, we are very pleased to announce another customer success story for ActiveVOS. Details are in the press release attached to this post.

This story is of particular note because we are showing ActiveVOS 7 this week at the Gartner BPM Summit. In this morning’s opening keynote, I listened as Janelle Hill and Jim Sinur described the benefits of BPM: speed, flexibility, responsiveness, business-owner-driven change, competitive advantage.

I was all smiles. See, I had the pleasure of interviewing the customer for this press release. As Janelle and Jim described the possibilities of BPM — how it can fundamentally change businesses — I remembered the interview with TheWatchery.Com and our excitement when they told us that ActiveVOS had allowed them to make millions of dollars overnight because they could change their processes so quickly. I think this story embodies much of what we are hearing about at the BPM Summit.

We wanted to make our readers and RSS subscribers aware of a new report on BPM that Forrester Research has recently published. It’s titled Forrester TechRadar™ For BP&A Pros: Business Process Management Suites, Q3 2009. While must you either buy the report or be a Forrester client to read it in full, the executive summary on Forrester’s website aptly sums up in a single sentence why BPM has become a very hot topic in enterprises: “Enterprises face increased demands for improvements in business agility; BPM tools can remove many of the barriers to success.”

If you are evaluating BPM for your organization, we highly recommend that you take a look at this report. It can only assist you in understanding the broad diversity of technical approaches to BPMS.

ActiveVOS is, for the first time, included in the broad survey of technologies that Forrester’s analysts provide in this report. We’re very gratified to have been included and we hope that if our approach to BPMS as described in the report matches your needs (and we bet it will), you’ll look take a close look at ActiveVOS.

Today, Active Endpoints is announcing a success story that we believe demonstrates the flexibility and capability of ActiveVOS and also makes us proud of the way the product has been used. As you can see in the press release attached to this post, ActiveVOS is being used to implement the business processes necessary to implement smart electrical grids in Scandinavia.

Building a smart grid means changing many of the core things a utility does that involve customers. It’s nitty-gritty operations like ordering new meters…getting them installed…making sure billing systems can handle customers who sell energy back to the grid and/or are interruptible.

We are very excited that ActiveVOS is BPMS has been chosen to help the global effort to become more energy-smart.

BTW, ActiveVOS 7 is now available for download.

One of the hottest topics in enterprise computing today is the proper relationship between business users and IT. Our CEO, Mark Taber, blogged about one aspect of this important topic just yesterday. Also yesterday, Gartner’s Jim Sinur wrote a very compelling post asking additional questions about the proper relationship between IT and end users.

Today, we are pleased to make available a new white paper by well-known industry analyst Sandra Rogers which offers additional insight into this very question.

Here’s an excerpt from the paper:

Organizations are discovering that the use of more visual and self-documenting solutions can better ensure that requirements are commonly understood and agreed upon, and measure if certain business goals met. Utilizing BPMSs like ActiveVOS that help individuals capture current and future state, that are easier to use and allow for multiple and concurrent cycles while designing and enhancing business processes, can greatly impact overall results. The use of such technology that provides deeper transparency into one’s processes, enables the sharing of best practices, and allows business stakeholders building degrees of freedom in adjust application and process parameters can help bring all parties into further alignment.

We hope you enjoy Sandy’s paper.

Active Endpoints has been named to the SD Times 100 list for 2009. Our press release announcing this honor is attached to this post.

This award validates the both the market acceptance of our ActiveVOS business process management system (BPMS) and the thought-leadership that Active Endpoints has achieved with its vision of a BPMS that development teams will love.

Instead of me going on and on about why we cherish this recognition, I’ll just quote Alan Zeichick’s take on what the award is and what it signals to development teams that are considering a BPMS:

Unlike other awards programs, we don’t benchmark application servers, or count defects in operating systems, or consider annual sales values, or ask companies to submit flattering essays about themselves and their customers. The SD Times 100, in fact, isn’t a product award or a marketing award.

Instead, we work hard to identify—and highlight—where the “buzz” is. What are development managers thinking about? What are the talking heads talking about? What are competitors sweating about? What is the industry focused on? That’s the SD Times 100.

Thank you, SD Times and also a big thank you to our customers, who have made our BPM system such a success.

In our latest podcast, I sat down for a quick chat with Active Endpoints’ CEO Mark Taber to recap our recent attendance at Gartner’s BPM Summit and the company’s approach to the BPMS marketplace. Mark detailed the reasons for the success ActiveVOS BPM had in Q1, despite these challenging economic times. Note to competitors (yes, we know you’re listening (-: ): you will squirm more than a little as Mark details how customers are able to get into production with ActiveVOS BPM with only modest levels of professional services billings.

And a special treat: I got Mark to spill the beans about some of the future plans for ActiveVOS. A must-listen podcast for anyone interested in using BPM to improve their business results.

It’s my great pleasure to post a conversation with my colleagues here at Active Endpoints, Michael Rowley, director of technology and strategy and Luc Clément, senior director of products in which they discuss the themes and features in our new release, ActiveVOS 6.1.

Michael and Luc detail how ActiveVOS 6.1 has masked the complexity of BPEL, allowing developers to work more naturally to create advanced SOA-based BPM applications. Luc and Michael also discuss the capabilities of a new feature in ActiveVOS 6.1 called “process rewind” which permits new levels of control over running processes.

And, Michael and Luc give a sneak peak at what’s next for ActiveVOS 6.1, discussing how a BPMN-style canvas can improve collaboration in the development of BPM applications. You may also find the the What’s New in ActiveVOS 6.1 document we posted earlier this week on the blog informative as well.

Whether you are a current user of ActiveVOS or you are evaluating BPM systems, I hope you will find this podcast an informative update. As I am posting this podcast before ActiveVOS 6.1 is officially released, I do not yet have direct links to the new content on our website. But if you visit our home page starting March 10, 2009, you will be able to quickly find updated samples, documentation, demonstrations and, of course, a free trial of ActiveVOS 6.1.

Unlike other companies that want to keep everything a big secret until they ship a release, we can’t wait for you to discover the cool new things we’re shipping in the latest release of our BPM product, ActiveVOS.

We plan to have ActiveVOS 6.1 available on March 10, 2009. But for BPM developers and business analysts longing for a simpler, more intelligent, easier-to-use BPM system, there’s no need to keep our new release secret. ActiveVOS 6.1 is precisely what you have been waiting for. And, if the vicissitudes of QA testing cooperate, you can have it next week.

The PDF attached to this post, authored by our Director of Products, Luc Clément and our Director of Strategy and Technology, Michael Rowley, is a great overview of what’s in ActiveVOS 6.1.

Check out the very sophisticated control of in-flight processes via our new “process rewind” capability in ActiveVOS 6.1. And, for those of you who a) know that BPEL is the core language for SOA and b) have thought BPEL is too complex, be sure to read up on how ActiveVOS 6.1 automatically generate BPEL assigns and the WSDL’s necessary to create compelling BPM applications.

Today, in the winter of our economic discontent, Active Endpoints has announced something fun: a contest in which the winners will take home some very cool prizes. Our “BPM in a bottle” contest embodies several important ideas about ActiveVOS. First, that BPM is best accomplished with an all-in-one, standards-based system. Second, that BPM system should be very affordably priced. Third, that it should be fun and easy to use that BPM system to automate business processes.

Read all the details in the press release attached to this post. Enter at www.absolutebpm.com — and good luck!
