Lilliana Vazquez Q&A: Looking Chic On The Cheap

I've often said that – even if I was a multi-millionaire – I'd still be clipping coupons, scouring the Internet for promo codes and making beelines for clearance racks. Deal-hunting gives me a sense of control in a world full of chaos - and one of the best recessionista resources is The Cheap Chica's Guide To Style, a website that shines a spotlight on high fashion at low prices.

For me, bargain shopping is more than just a hobby. It's a way of life. And as with any endeavor, practice makes perfect. So I was thrilled to chat up the blogger behind Cheap Chicas (and fellow Philadelphian), Lilliana Vazquez, and pick her brain about how to dress luxe for less.

Read on for Lilliana's tips on looking fabulous within the framework of your own figure, budget, and lifestyle.

SP: When did you first fall in love with fashion and beauty?
LV: My mom says out of the womb...even when I couldn't talk she says I had a say in what I wore!

SP: What was your first big break as a style expert?
LV: My first time on air at FOX4 in Dallas was my biggest break early on...since then I've turned it into a regular gig on NBC 10 in Philadelphia where I'm their fashion and style correspondent.

SP: What is your style philosophy?
LV: I'm all about mixing. High and low, plaids and prints, pearls and denim. I love using unexpected pairings to create a look that's unique and interesting and NOT predictable. Oh and style has nothing to do with money or labels...you can look just as good in head to toe thrift as you can in couture.

SP: What is the most treasured item in your closet?
LV: My Chanel Jumbo Classic Flap Bag...it's my most prized possession!

SP: If you could spend the day with one fashion icon (living or deceased), who would it be and what would you do?
LV: Coco Chanel and Christian Louboutin...they're both masters. I'd have Coco edit my closet and dress me to her liking and have Louboutin personally fit my foot for a custom pair of shoes!

SP: What makes a woman 'stylish?'
LV: Confidence. You can wear anything if you have the attitude to pull it off...whether it's pair of shoes from Payless or a Lanvin gown.

SP: Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?
LV: Chanel, Balenciaga, Giambattista Valli, Lanvin.

SP: Which trends will be big this fall/winter?
LV: Over the knee boots, excessively chunky knits, and motorcycle jackets.

SP: Which trend(s) do you wish would die?
LV: I love to have fun with fashion and trends are a part of that so I'm willing to try anything once...but I won't spend money on super trendy items and I always advise my readers not to either.

SP: Current handbag obsessions?
LV: I rarely spend money on "it" handbags...I have two or three classic bags that are designer but the rest of my collection is comprised of bags that cost $50 or less! Trends I'm loving are cross body for day and evening, 80's inspired shapes like the drawstring and oversized clutches are my fave!!

SP: Which celebrities would you love to style and why?
LV: Cameron Diaz because she's fearless and has an amazing body to dress, Nicole Richie because I love her eclectic style and she's petite like me, and January Jones because she's so fresh and new on the fashion/celeb scene but has incredible potential!

SP: Where are your favorite places to shop?
LV: Zara, Forever 21 (it's my mecca and I visit at least 3x per week!), H&M, Cherry Hill Thrift Center, Barney's Shoe Floor, Madewell, Ebay, Lulus.com, Target.

SP: What tips do you have for women who want star style on a budget?
LV: Make a list of your celeb style icons and watch what they're wearing. If you keep a close eye on their fashion choices you'll start to see a few common threads (colors, textures, cuts, styles, etc) and those are the items you purchase at budget friendly stores like Forever 21 and H&M. These items are their "signatures" and by incorporating them into the clothes you already own, you won't have to buy a whole new wardrobe to get their star style! Oh and for the best in celeb looks for less, go to my blog!!

SP: What are three fashion accessories every woman should own?
LV: An amazing pair of nude pumps (4" at least and your legs will look a mile long), a big, chunky statement necklace and tons and tons bangles that can be layered together!

SP: Can you share some figure-slimming fashion tips?
LV: Use belts to accent your waist...especially in the Fall/Winter when you're layering! Understand proportions and how they relate to your body...shortening a skirt by one inch or sending your blazer to a tailor to be taken in can make you look 2 sizes smaller!

SP: What products are staples in your makeup bag?
LV: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Tarte Creme Blush, NARS Catfight Lipstick, CoverGirl LashBlast and I've never met a lipgloss I didn't like!

Mariel,

Creating a great cat eye with liquid liner can be challenging but with a little practice, I'm certain you can perfect it!

Here's how you should do it. Look into a mirror and tilt your head up a bit so that the lashline (where liner will go) isn't touching the crease of the eye. Gently stretch your eye outward to prevent blinking. Start lining the outer corner first, going towards the inner corner. Make sure that the line gets thinner towards the inner corners. Now go back to the outter corner and wing the liner out and up a bit for the cat eye effect. If you mess up, wipe the corners with a Q-tip and try again. Good luck, gorgeous!

Face: Back in September at the Lela Rose Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week show, I asked Sarah Lucero (Key Makeup Artist for Stila) to recommend one Stila product that every woman should buy. Nails: When it comes to nail polishes, Zoya is in a league of their own. They are the longest lasting polishes I've ever used; expect knockout nails that go into extra innings (two weeks – with minimal upkeep). And they're free of harmful industrial chemicals like toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) that are known to cause cancer and birth defects. Just when I thought Zoya couldn’t get any better, they hit it out of the ballpark with their limited-edition ULTRAGLITTER collection for winter 2009/2010. Luna (silver glitter), Astra (rose glitter) and Nova (magenta glitter) provide full coverage in just two coats for ultra-intense, ultra-gorgeous, glitterrific color. Hair: Before I wash my hair, I like to indulge in a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment. Beauty Tool: I'm not quite sure how I lived without MAC's 219 Pencil Brush. I am an eyelining fool, so I absolutely adore how this brush allows me to turn any of my powder shadows into a smoky eyeliner; so, considering my eyeshadow stash, my smoky eye options are endless. The 219 Pencil Brush is also perfect for smudging pencil eyeliners, without erasing the line. The pencil retails for $23…but if I had to give you a ballpark figure for its actual value, I’d say it's priceless.

3 Video: Holy Hair Extensions, Britney!

I haven't considered myself a Britney Spears fan since circa 2001. But her new ditty, 3, has me kind of hooked.

Brit Brit's body looks SICK in the video, and her makeup is impressive. At the same time, I'm kinda wondering why homegirl is still rocking these tired-looking extensions. Surely, after two and a half years, she should have found something that looks better than this. I'm no extension/weave expert, so maybe this is the best Britney could find. But if that's the case, I would've told Mr. cameraman to cool it on the closeups.

Last night, I asked you to share your Halloween photos. Boy, you ladies act fast!

Spoiled Pretty reader, Sharon (above), was a porcelain doll for Halloween. To create the look, she used:

I even had people sending me photos on Twitter. @rockinhair7 blew my mind with her Edward Scissorhands look.

Can you even get over this "unzipped" look from Spoiled Pretty reader, Lee? She threw this makeup together in one hour, using products purchased at Hot Topic and Target. "The shiny gore bit is made out of red pigment mixed with clear lip gloss," she says. "But hey, Halloween is for being creative!"

SP reader, Ashleigh, was Sookie Stackhouse for Halloween. In the second pic, you can see her "Bill bites!"

Halloween Face of the Day

Even though I don't have fun plans this Halloween (aside from cheering on my Phillies in Game 3 of the World Series), I decided to have a little fun with my makeup. Here's the recipe:

1) Apply Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation Primer to moisturized face
2) Apply Make Up For Ever HD Foundation using the Beautyblender sponge
3) Using short strokes, use Diorshow Brow Styler to fill in brows
4) Apply Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original) to entire lid and to under lower lash line
5) Using MAC 242 Shader Brush, apply a nude, matte eyeshadow (one that matches your eyelid) to lid - from lash line to brow bone; I used MAC Soft Brown
6) Line the top inner rim of the eye with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero
7) Using Zero Eye Pencil, line the upper lash line - curving the line at the outer corner - to create a "cat eye"
8) Using Stila #7 Precision Crease Brush, apply the darker shade from MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow Duo in Midnight Madness to the crease and outer corner of the eye
9) Blend the eyelid using MAC 217 Blending Brush
10) Using MAC 266 Small Angle Brush, line the lower lash line with MAC Paint Pot in Delft
11) Apply MAC Pigment in Teal on top of the Paint Pot line, using MAC 219 Pencil Brush
12) Blend the lower lash line using MAC 217 Blending Brush
13) Coat upper lashes with Lancome Hypnôse Drama Mascara in Excessive Black

14) Apply MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Cheeky Bronze to cheekbones using EcoTools Bamboo Powder Brush
15) Apply Estee Lauder Pure Color Gloss Stick in Nude Almond to lips
16) Apply MAC Dazzleglass in Phiff! on top of lipstick
