STC Held Its Annual Golf Classic on May 3, 2013 at Crosswinds Golf Club

The STC held its annual Golf Classic to raise funds for its scholarship program. Although it was a litte windy and there were clouds, thank goodness, there was no rain, 66 players completed the tournament. Awards were handed out to the first, second and third place teams along with the longest drives and the closet to the pin.

Kudos to Robert Dowd and Jed Young of Port City Logistics who put together this tournament.

New this year, Cargo Group boiled and served peanuts on the course. In addition, Aerotek, Ardy Trading, ASF Logistics, ECB Occupational Medicine, Pier I, The Sullivan Group and TXN Intermodal, not only had players in the tournament, but provided personnal to assist with the administrative duties for the tournament.

News Alert from North Georgia, pollen has taken over our homes, families, and automobiles. I dont even have allergies but there is little my immune system can do when all I see is yellow in the air. So in an effort to remain healthy, I have decided I will no longer participate in the ridiculous ritual of shaking hands. Shaking hands originated in the ancient practice of adversaries grasping the weapon hand during a truce both doing so as a sign of their innocent intent. For the record, I dont have a weapon hand. All I can think about is my mother saying dont touch that, you dont know where its been. But alas the world of sales dictates otherwise so until then I vote we all bow instead. I know in other cultures they bow and I conceptual see why. At least they dont have to deal with pollen clouds the size of a small dump trucks.

Moving on past my rant, there is some good news! National Transportation Week is coming soon so be prepared with your local clubs. The dates are May 12^th 18^th for the US and June 1^st 10^th for Canada. Email me and let me know what your club is doing to celebrate NTW! Dont forget, you can email or mail your NTW packets for your clubs chance to win our annual NTW Contest. Take pictures and make notes of your events activities and send them to TCI for your chance to win!

We are NOW TAKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS for TCI. If your club has applicants, encourage those students to also apply for TCI scholarships as well. May 31^st is the absolute latest we will accept applications, no exceptions, so please make this a priority to announce to your club members.

Transportation Education

Katie asked me to send a segment every newsletter on transportation education. I am Dan Pallme, Director of the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute at the University of Memphis. We focus on freight research, education, and tech transfer. Therefore, I think it is a perfect opportunity to educate TCI on some of the issues that are out there whether they are transportation or education related. Likewise, if there is something that an individual club would like to know more about; please send me a note at depallme@memphis.edu It could be the subject of a future article for the benefit of the entire club.

I thought the subject of the first article should be the cost of education. TCI is in the midst of requesting students to apply for the various scholarships that we distribute as a Club. It is critical more than ever that we have worthy applicants to disperse the funds but additionally that members and / or clubs donate additional funds to make a difference in these young peoples lives. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the difference between tuition and the net cost less financial aid at public two-year colleges is not that significant, relatively speaking: roughly a few thousand dollars. But looking at private nonprofit four-year schools, that figure jumps dramatically, to almost $20,000. The average annual tuition (plus expenses) at a private nonprofit four-year college is about $35,000. Needless to say, it is critical we help these future transportation professionals. We can make a difference, one person at a time.

Last month we started with an introduction to Quality as a systematic approach which if utilized correctly can minimize defects, thus benefiting a company by either adding to their overall profit, or giving them the ability to lower prices to compete with competitors. This week we will take a brief bare bones outline look at the history of quality, and the key points of each timeframe.

o 1987 - Six Sigma (Motorola), ISO 9000, and the National Quality Awards (Baldrige) arrive on the scene (Different Quality programs in use today)

2013 STC Scholarshp Awards

Five Georgia Southern University students were awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship money to pursue their degrees in Logistics in Transportation at STC's Annual Scholarship Awards and Installation of the 2013/2014 Officers and Directors Luncheon at Crosswinds Golf Club on Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

The students are Camden Batchelor, Andrea Garay, Adrienne Glover, Aaron McLeod and Wesley Peebles.

Dr.Karl Manrodt, Professor of Marketing and Logistics was guest speaker.

Following the scholarshp awards, Billy Robinson of Port City Logistics installed the 2013/2014 Officers and Directors of The Savannah Traffic Club.

Is it just me or did February go by faster than it should have? I cant believe its March already. My 6 year old told me spring would be coming soon because of our good friend Phil the groundhog saying so via his shadow. I still get confused what it means if he sees his shadow and I have an even harder time figuring out why we use him to decide our future, but you gotta love Phil! Either way, I hope everyone gets the warm weather sooner than later! I have coworkers in the Northeast buried in snow right now so Im sure our northern friends would appreciate a bit of sun!

TCI will be having our midterm board meeting later this month in Charlotte, NC so a big thank you to the Eastern North Carolina Traffic Club!

Quality Corner

I have been in the communications industry for over 42 years, wearing many hats in operations and customer service. I have watched business philosophies come and go as fast as they came, but found that an essential facet of any business or industry is to consistently produce a defect free product that can be anywhere from producing widgets to the delivery of products and services on time and under budget. Defects and inefficiency (non-quality) costs money. I have read that as much as 20% of every sales dollar is lost due to defects/non-quality so it makes sense to identify areas where defects can be eliminated, with the benefits to either add to your organizations profit, or the ability to lower prices to compete with rival companies. So first, lets define Quality. There are many definitions, ,but the one I utilize is Phil Crosbys definition, Conformance to requirements (not as goodness). With that said, lets take a good look at the Cost of Quality (or non-Quality). External defects are the most costly and could be product returns, loss of good will, complaints, recalls, warranty administration, or penalties and litigation. Internal defects while not as damaging can still be costly, for example. poor processing, flawed design, external supplier problems. Appraisal or inspection is a good step forward, but it is still costly, with defect proof processes minimizing defects from the start as the ultimate fix. In the following months I will provide Quality History (TQM-6 Sigma-Lean), tips, and techniques to assist one in quality processes. Tom D.
