The Maritime Industry has lost a great ICON in Richard E. Carter

Richard E. Carter was President of D.J. Powers Company for 36 years. He was a graduate of Auburn University with a Degree in Engineering. He is survived by his wife , Jeanne Clark Carter; daughters, Laura Carter and Lee Carter Dye; sons, Rick Lee and Chuck Lee.

Dick Carter was buried on Sunday, February 5,2012. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Dick's memory may do so to:

Message from the President:

And it seems like it was just Christmas, where did the month of January go? I certainly hope ya’ll had a great holiday and had the chance to spend some quality time with the ones you love.

As the Savannah Traffic Club heads into 2012, plans are already under way for another exciting year of opportunities for us to share about what’s new in our industry as well as plenty of fun scheduled. Let me put together a short list of things coming up in the next couple months.

· February 23rd, it’s a Thursday evening we are getting together for an Oyster Roast and Low Country Boil. Join us at Captain Butlers Retreat located at 115 Penrose Drive on Richardson Creek, Whitemarsh Island. Take either Islands Expressway or Victory Drive (Rte 80) east. After they join, look for Bryan Wood Road. Turn left onto Bryan Wood Rd. then left onto Penrose Drive. There has been some side action going on in regards to which one of you might bring the best cocktail sauce. If you’re in on that action, contact an STC board member to get you registered. Wilmington Island’s own Mark Carter will be on hand to provide live music as well.

· The Independent Freight Forwarders & Custom Brokers Association of Savannah (IFFCBA) along with the Savannah Traffic Club are working hard to secure a date and location as we work together to bring to Savannah a panel discussion of industry experts to discuss the 5/10-year forecast our industry has planned for our future. Guest speakers will include: Import, Export, Steamship Lines, DOT, Container Chassis and Economic Development. I’ll keep you posted as those details finalize.

· The annual STC spring golf outing is quickly approaching end of April first week of May. We are working out the details and it will be here before you know it so start getting your foursomes together. There will also be opportunity for your company to sponsor holes, carts, and maybe this year hospitality tents. Watch the STC home Facebook page or our web page at www.savannahtrafficclub.com for details as they unfold.

· Only because it seems to be changing all the time combined with outstanding feedback from last year, be on the lookout for “Savannah Chassis Expo 2012” coming early summer.

· Sometime toward the end of March, we will also be hosting our annual scholarship luncheon when we will present Georgia Southern University the $10,000 raised at last year’s golf outing.

It’s only February and already I’m exhausted. In addition to the events already in the making, the club will be having board member and officer elections for the 2012/2013 calendar year. If you are currently a member of the Savannah Traffic Club and have any interest in volunteering your time or talent in serving on a committee, contact me and I will make sure I get your name put on the list. On a personal note, it has been a pleasure and certainly my honor to have been able to serve as your STC club president over the last couple years. I have learned so much from all of you and look forward to helping in the future.

Over the last year, several of our members along with folks from GPA, The Propeller Club, and the Savannah Maritime Association have been working together to develop an educational initiative that will have a tremendous impact on how we are preparing the next generation of logistics worker. The Maritime Logistics Educational Taskforce or MLET is currently working on programs that will be reaching students all over Georgia. The group will keep our respective membership informed as to how we are progressing.

Don’t forget to make arrangements to get your tickets now for the Oyster Roast coming up Thursday evening, February 23^rd. There will be plenty of exceptional food and entertainment on hand. The only thing we’re missing at this time is your participation. See any of the STC board and they’ll get you tickets.

Transportation Clubs International

Well happy January to everyone! I have many trips coming up in the next 8 weeks: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Tampa, and then TCI Midterm meeting in New Orleans! Busy year already so I am hoping this will transition to more business in the transportation industry! So I will be brief but I do want to point out a couple of things. Don't forget to review our additional services, specifically our credit card processing service. If you haven't reviewed our new discounted rates, you should. Also don't forget to send in your annual membership dues. If you don't pay for the insurance, you are not covered for your club so be sure to make this a priority with your board members.

Last, I would like to feature our newest promotion to assist with the TCI scholarship fund. You can now make a difference in scholarships for individuals furthering their education like never before! Every year we strive to offer substantial scholarships to those pursuing an education and career in our industry. Supply Chain News

Retail sales will slow to an increase of 3.4 percent this year (excluding autos, gasoline, and restaurants) to $2.53 trillion, but will outpace consensus expectations for overall economic growth, according to a new National Retail Federation forecast. Though high unemployment remains with uncertainty over potential job growth, the increase is still projected in the retail industry. The forecast for container import volume through 10 major US ports should be almost flat in January before rising in the spring.

Obama is proposing the creation of a Single Trade Agency. President Obama announced major changes in the government's business services agencies aimed at making it easier for small businesses companies to compete in the marketplace, create jobs and boost exports. The initiative will consolidate into one department the U.S. Trade Representative, Export-Import Bank, Small Business Administration, Overseas Private Investment Corp., U.S. Trade and Development Agency, and the Commerce Department's core business and trade functions. Obama will ask Congress for authority to fast track the changes. The revamp would cut between 1,000 to 2,000 jobs and save roughly $3 billion over the next decade, a government official told the Wall Street Journal. On the other side, Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee issued a joint statement, "While we welcome the ability to reduce duplication and streamline government services, we are concerned about the impact that the President's proposal could have on the ability of the United States to aggressively open new markets to American-made goods and services and create U.S. jobs."

Welcome to 2012! What a year it has been and I hope you all had a great time off with friends and family! I just returned from a week of Disney World magic with my 2 boys and other family. We had the greatest time and I was able to confirm that my 5 year old is an adrenaline junkie. He rode everything they would allow him to ride which was all but 2 rides and on those rides he told them he was really 7 years old as he thought that would change their minds. He wasn't getting the height concept. He told me on the way home that it was the best trip ever and that I needed to save my money so I could buy Disney World and we could move there. Unless profit margins in trucking changes drastically I will just let him keep wishing!

Supply Chain News

In trucking, demand is reported to only have recovered about 2/3 of what it lost in the recession. Rates have been rising at low levels however prices for services are rising faster than cost inflation which could contribute to increased margins for 2012. The railroads appear to have avoided another strike as 2 of the 3 remaining unions have agreed to terms. The 3^rd group agreed to extend the "cooling off" period into 2012. With these risks avoided, the railroads are moving forward with a clear direction leading to continued margin expansion. The average spot quotes from Asia to the West coast on imports increase 7.2% in the beginning of 2012. Based on the Cass Index for US Domestic shipments showing a small rise in December at .7% in December over 2010, this could signal new stability in demand. However, the only certainty that any research company can report is Uncertainty for 2012.
