In 2002, Brian Banks, a 17 year old high school football star with a promising future, was convicted of a kidnap-rape by a fellow female classmate. With still no DNA evidence and a recantation by the alleged victim, the conviction was vacated today thanks to Bank's attorney, California Innocence Project Director Justin Brooks.

Shakara Robertson, Marcus Smith and Darryl Washington were exonerated on Friday after a judge declared them actually innocent. The three Dallas men had been convicted of a purse snatching in 1994 on the basis of eyewitness identification which turned out to be mistaken. The Innocence Project of Texas was able to locate the actual perpetrators who all confessed to the crime. The real criminals went on to commit more crimes while Robertson, Smith and Washington were being wrongfully convicted. They cannot be prosecuted because the statute of limitations has expired.

Washington set to review new wrongful conviction compensation law- A new bill in the Washington state legislature would give exonerated defendants $50,000 per year of wrongful incarceration, with additional compensation for death row and sex crime exonerees. By comparison, California gives exoneratees $100 per day of incarceration or $36,500 per year.
