A recent Rutgers Regional Report, “Reinventing the New Jersey Economy: New Metropolitan and Regional Employment Dynamics,” authored by James W. Hughes, dean of Rutgers University’s Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, and Joseph J. Seneca, university professor and economist at the Bloustein School, examines the necessity of transforming and reimagining the state’s suburban office stock to adjust to the emerging employment and business dynamics. In the latest edition of the Commercial Intelligence Briefing Podcast for the National Association of Realtors, Dr. Hughes discusses the report and its implications for suburban office space in New Jersey and other states.

Biography

Dr. James Hughes

Dr. James W. Hughes is the dean of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, appointed to that position in 1995. He has been a member of the faculty since 1971. In addition, since 1988 he has also been the Director of the Rutgers Regional Report which, during its 23-year tenure, has produced 35 major economic/demographic/housing studies on New Jersey and the New York region.

He is a nationally-recognized academic expert on demographics, housing, and regional economics, and was a contributing editor to the magazine American Demographics. He is author or co-author of 33 books and monographs and more than 150 articles, generally focusing on housing, demographics and economic development patterns. Among these are The Atlantic City Gamble (published by the Harvard University Press), The Dynamics of America’s Housing, America’s New Market Geography, and America’s Demographic Tapestry: Baseline for the New Millennium (published by the Rutgers University Press).

He has provided extensive budgetary and economic testimony before many New Jersey State Legislative committees, and has provided numerous policy briefings both in Washington and Trenton on demographics, housing and the economy. He was a Distinguished Fellow of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), and has been awarded the Warren Hill Award of the New Jersey Bankers Association, the Rutgers’ Richard P. McCormick Award for Excellence in Alumni Leadership, the Rutgers Presidential Award for Distinguished Public Service, as well as the Distinguished Service Award of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association. He has been both a Woodrow Wilson and Ford Foundation Fellow and has served as a consultant to numerous federal, state and local public bodies as well as to many private and corporate clients.

He was recently a member of Governor Christie’s Housing Opportunity Task Force. In the past, he was on the NJ Governor’s Commission on Jobs, Growth and Economic Development, and the Governor’s Logistics Council. He was on the Real Estate Task Force of the Governor’s Economic Master Plan Commission and was a member and Trustee of the successor commission: Prosperity New Jersey. He formerly was on the Board of the E’Town Corporation (N.Y. Stock Exchange) and the Board of the Cali Real Estate Investment Trust (NY Stock Exchange). He was also a member of the Board of Advisors of the Mack-Cali Real Estate Investment Trust (N.Y. Stock Exchange). He has also served on numerous other boards and task forces, including the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Housing Foundation (Washington, D.C.), the Economic Advisors Board of the Council of the City of New York, the (New Jersey) Governor’s Property Tax Commission, and the (New Jersey) Governor’s World Class Economy Task Force.

Latest “Scarlet Memories” video features federal court judge

We’ve completed the Scarlet Memories video series we’ve been producing to commemorate the Rutgers University Camden campus’ 60th anniversary.

The final installment features the Hon. Joseph Rodriguez, Judge of the U.S. Federal District Court, Camden.

Judge Rodriguez graduated from the Rutgers Camden School of Law in 1958. His federal court has jurisdiction over, among other things, admiralty law, and he has heard cases involving the salvage of the S.S. Andrea Doria, which sank off the coast of New Jersey, and the discovery of the S.S. Carolina, sunk by a German U-boat in 1918 while carrying Judge Rodriguez’ father from Cuba to the United States.

CHERRY HILL, NJ – July 12, 2010 – Cherry Hill-based Professional Podcasts LLC, the award-winning video and multimedia production subsidiary of Lubetkin Communications LLC, has produced a web video news report featuring the Rutgers Future Scholars program at the Rutgers-Camden campus.

During the program, 45 eighth-graders from the Camden school system took part in a career day exploration with South Jersey business leaders. The students also visited four businesses in Camden as part of the program.

The video – viewable in the player above, and also available on the web at http://children.camden.rutgers.edu/future_scholars/index.html — depicts the career conversations students held, and highlights the students’ visit to Susquehanna Bank’s branch in Camden’s Victor Building and the bank’s regional headquarters on the nearby waterfront.

The video news report includes interviews with Rutgers educators and Susquehanna Bank officials about the importance of the Rutgers Future Scholars Program for keeping students focused on success in school. Award Winning Cherry Hill Video Firm Produces Alumni Videos For Rutgers-Camden’s 60^th Anniversary Website

CHERRY HILL, NJ – May 11, 2010 – Cherry Hill-based Professional Podcasts LLC, the award-winning video and multimedia production subsidiary of Lubetkin Communications LLC, is producing a series of short documentary video podcasts, or “vidcasts,” to commemorate the campus’ 60^th anniversary.

Professional Podcasts has completed two vidcasts in the “Scarlet Memories” series. The programs focus on alumni of Rutgers University’s Camden Campus reflecting on their Rutgers experiences. Rutgers Video – Cal Maradonna

One vidcast features Cal Maradonna, retired dean of students at the Camden campus, who entered college as a freshman at the school in 1968 and remained on campus as a professor and administrator for the next 40 years. In his video recollections, Maradonna also describes creating many unique Rutgers-Camden souvenirs, including a commemorative bottle of Coca-Cola for the campus’ 50^th anniversary, Rutgers cookies, walnuts, and other items. Rutgers Video – Beth Wirchansky

The second video profiles Beth Wirchansky, a 2009 Master of Science graduate of the Camden Campus. Wirchansky, who is working in cancer DNA research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, was part of a biology department research team at Rutgers Camden that identified a previously uncategorized species of ground leech found in Alloway Township, NJ. Wirchansky’s video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csc4aZ5Mtik.
