Famed Analyst Mary Meeker Joins Famed VC Firm Kleiner-Perkins

Mary Meeker, probably the banking world's single best-known person in technology, has joined venture capitalists Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, backers of Google, Amazon, Zynga and many clean-tech companies in recent years.

Meeker analyzes technology trends and gives research-dense, high energy presentations at conferences like O'Reilly and TechWeb's Web 2.0 Summit. Last year she discussed research finding that use of the mobile web will surpass use of desktop browsers, globally, within 5 years. How prominent is Meeker? Sarah Lacy, who has covered the Silicon Valley VC market for years, puts it this way at TechCrunch this morning: "As an analyst, Mary Meeker was as famous in the dot com glory days as [Kleiner's John] Doerr was as a VC, so it's appropriate and seemingly a long time coming that the two would wind up as partners."

Sponsor

"Our number one goal is to help the Mark Pincuses [founder of Zynga] of the world build their businesses into Internet treasures, and there has been no greater finder of Internet treasures than Mary Meeker," Doerr told TechCrunch this morning.

Let's hope that not everyone at the firm famous for funding world-changing companies like Google and Amazon sees as their number one goal funding companies like the makers of Farmville. Perhaps it really is just about the economic growth, though, and all those other investments made the world a better place only as an afterthought. On the other hand, the socio-psychological meaning and impact of Zynga will likely be the subject of years of academic study; maybe that will do the world some good.

Meeker's research for Morgan Stanley has long been a favorite for web startups to use in their fund raising presentations. Whether Meeker will continue publishing as prolifically, presenting at conferences or speaking as a seemingly non-partisan analyst on the field remains to be seen. Her position as one of the most powerful women in technology clearly remains unchanged.

Below, highlights from Meeker's last big presentation on the growing importance of Mobile, as selected by ReadWriteWeb's Audrey Waters in coverage this Spring.

Google: Chrome OS Still Coming This Year (It Just Might Be In Beta Form)

There's a lot of hoopla right now that Google's Chrome OS has been delayed and will miss the stated release date of "this year". Much of this is based off of the comment that Google CEO Eric Schmidt made last week at Web 2.0 Summit, in which he said that Chrome OS would be available sometime in "the next few months". So I asked Google today if they were still sticking with the "later this year" availability of Chrome OS — the answer I got? An enthusiastic "yep!"

But just in case, I decided to follow up and ask if that meant an actual shipping product was coming or some test version of the OS? The answer there was much more murky. "We're not going into details at this point," is what I was told.

In her piece on LinkedIn in PEWire, Connie Loizos writes about Jeff Weiner’s talk at Web 2.0 Summit this week and exhorts him to pick up the pace at LinkedIn — using Reid Hoffman’s reluctance to introduce photos to LinkedIn as an example of an essential conservatism in the company.

I have to completely disagree with her analysis, as I’ve been watching LinkedIn since its inception, and have been impressed with both their willingness to change, as well as their actual implementation of new UX, features, and especially experimental features. Their rapid implementation of Groups, Answers, their search refinements, integration with other social networks, etc. etc. has always been rapidly executed. Their Chief Scientist, DJ Patil and his team are especially agile innovators, with an incredible fund of data to work with and many experimental features cooking in their labs.

I have to especially agree with Jeff’s assertion that the lack of Kegstands and hot tub photos on LinkedIn is one of LinkedIn’s key distinguishing features. It should be preserved and defended at all costs. In building a social network, the standards and mores of a community are its lifeblood; one does not lightly ‘experiment’ with these and LinkedIn is exactly right to defend them. I think Loizos’ article mistakenly conflates the company’s defense of LinkedIn’s culture with conservatism. It’s just not so.

I’d also take issue with the assertion that they haven’t made any “high profile” personnel changes. Weiner coming in as CEO is as high profile as you could hope for, and I believe that hiring name brand talent isn’t as successful of a strategy as hiring great engineers and developers, which I have seen them doing again and again. They should know, they’re a company that specializes in employment and hiring. :-)

Pepper’s Lonely Facebook Band, which sits high on the iTunes charts. Boy, is he not kidding. He’s taking the time for a number of things that weren’t important yesterday. So should we.

On the surface it seems like business as usual, with the heads of big Internet companies sitting down with John Battelle and Tim O’Reilly at this week’s Web 2.0 Summit. The Android tablets are starting to drop now; they’re half the size, half the weight, and amazingly the same price. What? Here’s some guy with a Comcast XFINITY iPad app, which lets me control my DVR at home but doesn’t let me view any of the network content that is choking the hard drive nor the on-demand versions that would let me not record them in the first place. What?

Much is made of data portability but how it ain’t gonna happen because it wouldn’t be good business. Mark Zuckerberg was personable and engaging and all that good stuff, but why on Earth would he want to fix something that is so not broken? Why would Evan Williams want to give away Track for free when he can release a new iPhone app with Track push notification tied directly to our credit cards? What?

Much of the conversation, however, concerned TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington's water crisis. We did get a chance to intermingle some attitude about Facebook's new Message platform, which apparently only Robert Scoble has wangled an active account.

The Gang was split down the middle on Facebook's credibility in the data portability space, with Arrington and searchengineland editor Danny Sullivan arguing that Facebook are a bunch of liars and salesforce.com Cloudblogger John Taschek saying everybody in Silicon Valley was challenged in the truthiness department. Gillmor, of course, argued back and forth just for the sake of it. Arrington eventually veered off into a discussion of virtual reality, leaving us with the thought that whoever invents that will get all the money.

Video ahead.

The VC firm owned 10% of Facebook, but has sold one-fifth of its stake for a price somewhere in the range of $500 million, and is no longer the largest venture holder in the company. Buyers reportedly include Andreessen Horowitz, which may be in for as much as $200 million.

The big question is valuation. Are the buyers accepting that Facebook is worth $35 to $40 billion, or are they buying at a much lower price? At the Web 2.0 Summit conference the other day, VCs Fred Wilson and John Doerr had a disagreement on the secondary market, where investors buy limited stock, with Wilson suggesting that valuations in that market are not realistic or meaningful.

Regardless, it's probably higher than the $15 billion valuation that Microsoft used when making its investment in 2007. That investment looks like genius now.

Join the conversation about this story »

See Also:

Another Problem For Facebook Email: Many Companies Still Block Facebook At Work

Sorry, Facebook, Complexity Will Kill Your New Messaging System

IT'S OFFICIAL: Microsoft's Investment In Facebook At A "Ridiculous" Valuation Was BRILLIANT

</dc:description>

Web Video Hogs Up 37 Percent Of Internet Traffic During Peak TV Hours

A few weeks ago, some data came out suggesting that Netflix alone accounts for 21 percent of Internet traffic during peak TV hours. But if you add in a couple other sources of streaming video from the Web, namely YouTube and other forms of Flash video, the traffic share of Web video jumps to 37 percent (with 10 percent from YouTube and 6 percent fro Flash video). BitTorrent is another 8 percent, with much of that being video as well.

These startling numbers were put together in a slide by Morgan Stanley Internet analyst Mary Meeker during her presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit earlier this week. All HTTP web traffic is only 23 percent of the total.

It featured venture capitalists John Doerr (Kleiner Perkins) and Fred Wilson (Union Square Ventures) talking with New York Magazin's John Heilemann about the state of both investing and the state of the web ecosystem at large. What made it so interesting is that Wilson and Doerr clearly don't agree on many of the big issues.

This was best exemplified during the portion of the talk when the two give their views on where we are now. While Wilson worries that we may be in the midst of the next "bubble", Doerr thinks of it as a "boom". They're both talking about the same thing, they just view it completely different ways.
