Alice Springs Heritage Week will run from 14 - 22 April 2012.

The Alice Springs Heritage Festival is a week-long celebration of local heritage.

The McDouall Stuart Branch of the National Trust has chosen ‘the work of John Flynn and his Australian Inland Mission’ as the theme for Heritage Week in Alice Springs.

2012 is the centenary of the formation of the Australian Inland Mission. John Flynn worked tirelessly for 40 years to improve the lives of people in bush.

He built Alice Springs first hospital, Adelaide House.

Developed the pedal radio so people could get help in an emergency;

Established the Flying Doctor Service.

The School of the Air and the Old Timers Village are also products of his vision for the inland.

The opening event of Heritage Week will be an open day at Adelaide House & the John Flynn Memorial Church on Saturday morning 14 April 2012. It will include a re-enactment of a 1914 camel patrol by padre Bruce Plowman and his camel ‘boy’, Dick Gillen.

The National Trust will officially launch Heritage Week on Sunday afternoon 15 April, with the Doreen Braitling Memorial Lecture. It will be delivered by Max Griffiths, the 3rd Superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission. This event will be held at the Town Council’s function room, next to the Council Chambers, commencing at 2.30 pm.
