Paper has got a lot more to it than what meets the eye. It’s got a rich and interesting history. The paper that we use today has detailed process behind it that produces it. So, let’s look at some really interesting and useful paper facts.

1. The United States, followed by Canada, Finland, Japan, and Sweden, is the world’s largest producer of paper and paper products (newspapers, boxes, etc). That doesn’t come much as a surprise, given that industrialized nations, with 20 percent of the world’s population, consume about 87 percent of the world’s printing and writing papers.

2. According to recent estimates, the paper industry is the 4th largest contributor (or third largest, depending on which stats you look at) to greenhouse gas emissions in the world.

3. If the United States cut office paper use by just 10%, it would prevent the emission of 1.6 million tons of greenhouse gases. That’s the same as taking 280,000 cars off the road.

4. About 25% of what the people in our world throw away is made of paper. Goes to show the importance of recycling.

5. Americans receive about 4 million tons of junk mail a year. If 100,000 people stopped getting/sending junk mail, we could save up to 150,000 trees annually. Note to junk mailers: if you really gotta send that junk, be a little considerate about trees, and use email.

6. Recycling just one ton of paper saves about 17 trees.

7. China, India and the rest of Asia are the fastest growing paper users, but they still lag way behind the developed world. Europe uses about 500 pounds of paper per person per year, while Australia uses about 300 pounds of paper per person per year.

8. The average British family throws away 6 trees worth of paper away a year.

9. Paper making is a quite detailed and meticulous process, and involves more than 7 or 8 different processes. Check out how it’s made here!

Recycling

Trees are an extremely important and precious natural resource. They’re not only our prime source of paper, but they’re also very important environmentally. So, we need to make sure that as less trees as possible have to be cut down to meet our needs.

Enter recycling. Here are some facts about paper recycling, that I hope will make you realize the importance of recycling paper.

10. Recycling about a ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7 thousand US gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for six months.

11. Up to 40% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. The lower energy requirement means that recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.

12. One million tons of recovered paper is enough to fill more than 14,000 railroad cars.

13. In 2008, the amount of paper recovered for recycling averaged 340 pounds for every person in the U.S.

14. In 2008, a record-high 57.4 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling.

15. About 56% of the paper consumed in the United States during 2007 was recovered for recycling. That’s quite a lot.

Paper has some impressive consumption figures associated with it. And rightly so, given the huge part of our lives that it is.

Almost every university in the world has an online presence. Universities have to deal with a lot of information, and organizing all this information on a website in a reader friendly manner is not an easy thing to do.

What’s a good design?

As a prospective undergrad student, I’ve gone through many universities’ websites. And I think I know what the typical person (and a typical internet user) would want from a university website. Here are two points that I think cover it all:

• The homepage should have all the major kinds of information, for example, information about undergrad/grad/transer admissions, financial aid, academics, and so on. In short, the reader should be able to find a link to the information he/she needs.
• Don’t make it very confusing. Most visitors are average internet users who just need what they’re looking for. Don’t make it a treasure hunt for them.

During my applications season, I came across many university websites. Here are the 44 well designed ones (note that this isn’t a “top 50″ list. It’s just a plain old list. No competition).

But over time, this can get messy. When the time comes to find a particular site, wading through ALL your bookmarks can be a daunting task.

So, why not organise your bookmarks? Sure, it can take time upfront, but it’s worthy in the long run. Here are 5 tools to effectively organise and manage your bookmarks.

1. FruitfulTime BookmarkManager

This free bookmark manager by FruitfulTime allows you to do a lot with your bookmarks. You can import bookmarks from your internet browser, bookmark pages automatically with a global hot key, share your bookmarks via email and more. 2. Delicious + Firefox extension

Delicious is an awesome online bookmarking service that allows you to save favourite pages online. Delicious has an addon for Firefox, that allows you to save bookmarks directly to Delicious while using Firefox. You can also edit, view, and organise all your bookmarks easily.

One advantage this will give you is that your bookmarks are stored online, rather than on your computer – this means you can access them anywhere. Got something you don’t want to share with other people on Delicious? Just press that “Do not share” button!

3. Xmarks

Formerly known as Foxmarks, Xmarks is an awesome Firefox addon for people who work on multiple computers. Xmarks will ensure that the bookmarks on each computer (that has Firefox and Xmarks installed) are synchronized. For example, if you work from a desktop computer and a laptop, this handy addon is likely to save you a lot of time.

4. Google Bookmarks

Google has its own online bookmarking service. It is very simple and not very flashy – which is what you might expect of a Google service – but it works perfectly. You can bookmark pages by using the bookmarklet and you can edit and export your bookmarks. That’s pretty much all you can do. I suppose an option to import bookmarks and share them would make Google bookmarks more attractive.

5. Smart Bookmarks Bar

This Firefox addon is ideal for you if you have a lot of bookmarks, and the bookmarks toolbar in Firefox is overcrowded. This add-on displays just the icons, instead of the whole names of bookmarks, thus creating a lot more space for your bookmarks.

1. The bomb wasn’t dropped just like that. The United States bombed Japanese cities for six months. This was followed by an ultimatum, which was ignored by the Shōwa regime. Then the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki was made.

2. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed as many as 140,000 people, while the one dropped on Nagasaki killed as many as 90,000 people. People continued to die even after the bombings, due to secondary illnesses (for example, cancers) caused by the immense radiation. In both cities, the majority of the dead were civilians.

3. Six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, on August 15, Japan surrendered to the Allied Powers, ending World War II.

4. The date to bomb Hiroshima, August 6th, was chosen because clouds had obscured the target previously. The plane carrying the bomb was the Enola Gay. The bomb (known as “Little Boy“) was dropped at 08:15 (Hiroshima time).

5. The bomb created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT. The radius of total destruction was about one mile, Fires resulting from the explosion spread out to an area of radius of about 4.4 miles Japanese officials determined that 69% of Hiroshima’s buildings were destroyed and about 7% damaged.

6. On August 9th, Nagasaki was bombed. The B-29 Superfortress Bockscar, flown by Major Charles W. Sweeney, carried the nuclear bomb code-named “Fat Man“. Actually, Kokura was the primary target, and Nagasaki the secondary. But, due to poor visibility because of cloud cover over Kokura and low fuel, the crew decided to go to Nagasaki.

7. At 11:01 local time, the bomb (code-named “Fat Man”) was dropped. It exploded about 43 seconds later, about 470 meters above the ground. The blast was equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT. The explosion generated heat estimated at 3,900 degrees Celsius and winds that were estimated at 1005 km/h. Just to put that in perspective, a Category 5 hurricane (the worst) generates winds of speeds more than 250 kilometres an hour. This blast generated speeds just over 4 times that of a Category 5 hurricane.

8. 40,000 to 75,000 people died immediately. By the end of 1945, the total number of casualties may have reached 80,000. The radius of total destruction was about a mile.

9. Japan surrendered shortly after the bombing of Nagasaki. The fear of a Soviet invasion along with the shocks of the bombings were more than enough to convince Emperor Hirohito to surrender.

10. Those who survived the atomic bombings are known as the hibakusha (Japanese, literal translation: explosion-affected people). As of March 31, 2008, 243,692 hibakusha were recognized by the Japanese government.
