But over time, this can get messy. When the time comes to find a particular site, wading through ALL your bookmarks can be a daunting task.

So, why not organise your bookmarks? Sure, it can take time upfront, but it’s worthy in the long run. Here are 5 tools to effectively organise and manage your bookmarks.

This free bookmark manager by FruitfulTime allows you to do a lot with your bookmarks. You can import bookmarks from your internet browser, bookmark pages automatically with a global hot key, share your bookmarks via email and more. 2. Delicious + Firefox extension

Delicious is an awesome online bookmarking service that allows you to save favourite pages online. Delicious has an addon for Firefox, that allows you to save bookmarks directly to Delicious while using Firefox. You can also edit, view, and organise all your bookmarks easily.

One advantage this will give you is that your bookmarks are stored online, rather than on your computer - this means you can access them anywhere. Got something you don’t want to share with other people on Delicious? Just press that “Do not share” button!

3. Xmarks

Formerly known as Foxmarks, Xmarks is an awesome Firefox addon for people who work on multiple computers. Xmarks will ensure that the bookmarks on each computer (that has Firefox and Xmarks installed) are synchronized. For example, if you work from a desktop computer and a laptop, this handy addon is likely to save you a lot of time.

4. Google Bookmarks

Google has its own online bookmarking service. It is very simple and not very flashy - which is what you might expect of a Google service - but it works perfectly. You can bookmark pages by using the bookmarklet and you can edit and export your bookmarks. That’s pretty much all you can do. I suppose an option to import bookmarks and share them would make Google bookmarks more attractive.

5. Smart Bookmarks Bar

This Firefox addon is ideal for you if you have a lot of bookmarks, and the bookmarks toolbar in Firefox is overcrowded. This add-on displays just the icons, instead of the whole names of bookmarks, thus creating a lot more space for your bookmarks.

Today (August 6th) is the 64th anniversary of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, by the United States, during the World War II, on August 6th 1945. This was a decisive, and significant event in the history of mankind. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima, along with that of Nagasaki on August 9, is to date the only attack with nuclear weapons in the history of warfare. Here are ten facts about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki :

1. The bomb wasn’t dropped just like that. The United States bombed Japanese cities for six months. This was followed by an ultimatum, which was ignored by the Shōwa regime. Then the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki was made.

2. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed as many as 140,000 people, while the one dropped on Nagasaki killed as many as 90,000 people. People continued to die even after the bombings, due to secondary illnesses (for example, cancers) caused by the immense radiation. In both cities, the majority of the dead were civilians.

3. Six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, on August 15, Japan surrendered to the Allied Powers, ending World War II.

4. The date to bomb Hiroshima, August 6th, was chosen because clouds had obscured the target previously. The plane carrying the bomb was the Enola Gay. The bomb (known as “Little Boy“) was dropped at 08:15 (Hiroshima time).

5. The bomb created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT. The radius of total destruction was about one mile, Fires resulting from the explosion spread out to an area of radius of about 4.4 miles Japanese officials determined that 69% of Hiroshima’s buildings were destroyed and about 7% damaged.

6. On August 9th, Nagasaki was bombed. The B-29 Superfortress Bockscar, flown by Major Charles W. Sweeney, carried the nuclear bomb code-named “Fat Man“. Actually, Kokura was the primary target, and Nagasaki the secondary. But, due to poor visibility because of cloud cover over Kokura and low fuel, the crew decided to go to Nagasaki.

7. At 11:01 local time, the bomb (code-named “Fat Man”) was dropped. It exploded about 43 seconds later, about 470 meters above the ground. The blast was equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT. The explosion generated heat estimated at 3,900 degrees Celsius and winds that were estimated at 1005 km/h. Just to put that in perspective, a Category 5 hurricane (the worst) generates winds of speeds more than 250 kilometres an hour. This blast generated speeds just over 4 times that of a Category 5 hurricane.

8. 40,000 to 75,000 people died immediately. By the end of 1945, the total number of casualties may have reached 80,000. The radius of total destruction was about a mile.

9. Japan surrendered shortly after the bombing of Nagasaki. The fear of a Soviet invasion along with the shocks of the bombings were more than enough to convince Emperor Hirohito to surrender.

10. Those who survived the atomic bombings are known as the hibakusha (Japanese, literal translation: explosion-affected people). As of March 31, 2008, 243,692 hibakusha were recognized by the Japanese government.

Flags of the world… Image: zedwards

There are around 190 countries (the number depends on who you ask) in the World right now. Each country has a national flag, and each national flag has a story to tell. Each flag has a unique design, which symbolizes something that is integral to that particular country.

Today, we look at the flags of 10 different countries: what the flags represent, who made them, and more information. Enjoy!

1. Pakistan

Pakistan’s national flag was designed by Syed Amir-uddin Kedwaii. It was adopted on 11 August, 1947, just days before Pakistan’s independence from British India.

The flag has a dark green area (which covers most of the space) representing the Muslim majority of Pakistan, with a vertical white stripe in the hoist, representing religious minorities. In the centre is a white crescent moon and a white five-pointed star, which symbolize progress and light respectively.

2. The UK

The United Kingdom (which encompasses Great Britain and Northern Ireland) uses the Union Jack as its national flag. The current design of the flag dates back to 1801. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England), edged in white, superimposed on the Cross of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which are superimposed on the Saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland).

The correct proportions of the flag are 1:2, but the British Army officially uses proportions modified to 3:5.

3. France

The national flag of France is a tricolour, featuring three vertical bands: blue (the hoist side), white in the center , and red on the far side. This tricolour design was used during the French Revolution, and since has become a symbol of liberty and freedom around the world. The colours represent those of Paris (blue and red), combined with that of the Bourbon Dynasty (white), though they are usually associated with freedom, equality, and brotherhood, the ideals of the French Revolution. This design was adopted in May of 1853.

3. Egypt

The Egyptian flag in its current form was adopted in October of 1984. It depicts Egypt’s national emblem, the Eagle of Saladin (a shield superimposed on a golden eagle facing the hoist side above a scroll bearing the name of the country in Arabic) centered in the white band of the three equal horizontal bands of red (top), white(center), and black(bottom).

The red colour refers to the period before the Revolution, which brought the army to power (and saw King Farouk (King of Egypt) being deposed). This was a time when British occupation of the country was strongly opposed by the Egyptians.

The white symbolizes the advent of the 1952 Revolution which ended the monarchy without bloodshed. The color black symbolizes the end of the oppression of the people of Egypt at the hands of the Monarchy and British colonialism.

4. Germany

The national flag of Germany, like that of France, is also a tricolour. It features three equal horizontal bands displaying the national colours of Germany: black (top) , red (center) and gold(bottom). But unlike the flag of France, the bands are horizontal, instead of vertical.

The Black tricolour first appeared in the early 19th century and achieved prominence during the 1848 revolution. Following World War I, the tricolour was adopted as the national flag of Germany. Following World War II, both East and West Germany adopted the same tricolour flag (communist symbols were added later to the flag of East Germany). Since the reunification of East and West Germany on 3 October, 1990, the black-red-gold tricolour has remained as the national flag of Germany.

5. People’s Republic of China

The flag of the People’s Republic of China was designed by Zeng Liansong (an economist and artist). It is known as the “Fives-stars-red Flag”.

China’s first national flag originated in 1872. It was yellow with a blue dragon (representing the Qing Dynasty), which ruled China for many years. The revolt of 1911 saw the changing of the flag to 5 different coloured stripes. The present flag dates back to 1949 (the one designed by Liansong). The colour red symbolizes the spirit of the revolution, while the five stars signify the unity of the people of China.

6. Italy

Italy’s national flag is also a tricolour. It features three vertical bands: pale green (hoist side), white (middle), and red (far side). In its current form it has been in use since 19 June 1946 and was formally adopted on 1 January 1948. The first time the tricolour was used in the Italian flag was in 1797, clearly inspired by the French flag.

There are difference in opinion as to what the three colours represent. Some people think the green symbolizes the country’s plains and hills; white, the snow-capped Alps; and red, the bloodshed during the wars for Italian independence. A more religious viewpoint is that green represents hope, white represents faith, and the red signifies charity.

7. Nepal

The national flag of Nepal is the only national flag that is not rectangular. The flag is a simplified combination of two single pennants. Its crimson red is the colour of the rhododendron, the country’s national flower. Red is also a sign of victory in war. The blue border is the colour of peace. The two triangles sybolize the Himalayas, and represent two religions: Hinduism and Buddhism.

Until 1962, the flag’s emblems (the sun and the crescent moon) had human faces. They were removed to modernize the flag. The flag was adopted in December 1962.

8. Sri Lanka

The national flag of Sri Lanka consists of a gold lion, holding a sword in its right fore paw, in front of a crimson background with four golden bo leaves in each corner. Around the background is a yellow border, and to its left are 2 vertical stripes of equal size in saffron and green, with the saffron stripe closest to the lion. The lion represents bravery. The orange stripe represents the Sri Lankan Tamils, the green stripe represents Sri Lankan Moors, the crimson background represents European Burghers.

The flag was adopted in 1950.

9. The United States

The American flag consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the top left bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars.

The fifty stars on the flag represent the fifty American states and the thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that rebelled against the British Crown and became the first states in the Union. The flag is also called the Stars and Stripes. The current, 50 stars version of the flag, was adopted in July of 1960.

10. Switzerland

The flag of Switzerland is one of only two square state flags (the other being that of the Vatican City). It consists of a red square with a bold white cross in the center. Although the proportions of the flag are 1:1 (square), proportions such as 2:3 and 7:10 are usually used.
