Webinar title

How healthy is your open source community? Using the Software Sustainability Maturity Model to evaluate your open source software

Abstract

To be viable, academic projects using open source software need to ensure that people continue to engage with their project beyond initial funding. Similarly, academic institutions and businesses seeking to adopt open source solutions developed as part of academic projects need to be sure they can do so without exposing themselves to unmanageable risk. By using the Software Sustainability Maturity Model, both businesses and academic users and developers can identify any weak points in their development and governance processes, and address them as appropriate. This session will provide the participants with the skills to assess the non-technical aspects of open source software development.

Presenters

Sander van der Waal, Service Manager, OSS Watch

What will you learn or take away?

Having attended this session, you will be able to answer the question: "Can a business collaboration be built around this open source project?" You will understand how to evaluate the health of an open source community and plan for sustainable engagements with companies interested in developing products or services based on it.

Webinars will be run using the Blackboard Collaborate software platform, provided and supported by JISC Netskills

Participants will need to have the latest version of Java installed on their PC/Laptop - check settings here: http://tinyurl.com/6bacwu4.

You will need a headset (headphones and microphone) to listen to and talk in the session. Don't use built-in microphones or speakers (built into laptops or webcams) as this creates echoing, feedback and will spoil the session for others.

Download a participant's guide to Blackboard Collaborate

In some instances you may experience firewall/proxy issues which need to be changed and they are often controlled by the local IT Administrator. If you have these issues, please read the proxy set up guide and information on firewall errors.
There is also a self-diagnosis page which gives guidance on how to solve such issues.

JISC reserves the right to limit registration numbers for the live webinar and to give priority to attendees from within a Higher Education of Further Education Institution in the case of over-subscription.

Choosing the right open source licence

Abstract

There are many free and open source software licences, and while they all broadly attempt to facilitate the same things, they also have some differences. Some of the major differences can be grouped together into categories, and this talk acts as an introduction to these categories. Having attended this session, you should be able to understand which decisions you should take in order to select a licence for your code.

What will you learn or take away?

Delegates will take away an understanding of:

the main categories of open source licences available

the implications of choosing one for the future of your software

Webinar: How to measure use and impact of your journal subscriptions

      Date: Wednesday 29 February 2012

      Time: 13:30 - 14:30

      Venue: Online

Session information

Webinar title

JUSP: Discover a simple way to measure use and impact of your journal subscriptions

Abstract

During times of economic constraint, accurate and comparable usage reports are essential to fully understand the value of journal subscriptions. Built in response to demand from UK higher education libraries, the Journal Usage Statistics Portal (JUSP) enables librarians to access usage data quickly and efficiently, providing a single point of access for libraries to view, download and analyse their journal usage reports for the publisher deals to which they subscribe.

This session will offer a practical demonstration of JUSP, and will outline how the team is working with publishers to deliver usage statistics.

We will also introduce the main benefits of the service for libraries, for example:

It allows libraries to access a range of added-value reports to help them analyze usage and establish value for money to help in purchasing and renewal decisions.

It avoids the need to visit multiple publisher sites to download usage statistics

It allows libraries to quickly and easily compare usage across various publishers and years

It contains data from gateways and hosts to provide a truer picture of usage.

A crucial part of the JUSP development cycle is gathering user feedback and implementing suggestions. This session will illustrate how the results of ongoing qualitative research are informing portal development and will outline our future plans for this innovative service.

Presenters

Jo Lambert, Senior Mimas Development Officer, Mimas

Angela Conyers, Research Fellow, Evidence Base

What will you learn or take away?

Delegates will recognise the time and cost saving benefits of using JUSP to manage their usage statistics.

They will gain an understanding of how to quickly and easily compare usage across publishers and years, and save time with aspects such as completion of their annual SCONUL returns

Delegates will be able to implement tools and techniques highlighted within the session within their own libraries.

The session will outline user driven developments and highlight opportunities to influence future plans

Who is this webinar aimed at?

Webinar title

Strategies for success: Increasing the synergy between strategy and technology

Abstract

This one hour webinar will showcase the new Strategic Information and Communications Technology (S-ICT) toolkit being launched by JISC InfoNet to coincide with this webinar. The webinar will highlight the key features of the newly developed JISC/LFHE toolkit, a variety of deployment models and likely obstacles and possible solutions. Participants will also learn from institutions that have already used the toolkit to initiate real world transformational projects.

The use of ICT in supporting the delivery of core business goals has become increasingly important to senior managers; yet research by the University of Nottingham and its partners indicates that institutions differ widely in the maturity of their strategic use of ICT. This webinar will emphasise the importance of constant engagement between senior IS professionals and their institutions' senior management teams.

The toolkit includes a range of checklists, case studies and good practice guidelines to help senior managers identify, analyse, assess and develop their current maturity level. The toolkit will help participants to further develop the skills and institutional processes necessary to ensure the UK FE and HE sectors continue to deliver a first class experience for its students and partners. Paul Gentle will describe how LFHE are supporting the on-going usage and championing uptake.

After the webinar, participants will enjoy access to the online Strategic information and communications technology (S-ICT) toolkit to help consolidate their new knowledge. Participants will be encouraged to identify a suitable transformation project within their own institution and use the toolkit to identify improvement opportunities.

Presenters

Myles Danson, Programme Manager, Technology supported business change, JISC

Parmjit Dhugga, Training & Development Manager, Nottingham University

Paul Gentle, Programme Director, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education

Steve Bailey, Senior Adviser, JISC InfoNet

What will you learn or take away?

By the end of the end of the workshop, participants will:

be able to understand the meaning of ‘Strategic ICT’ and the importance of critical self-appraisal

be able to describe the key enablers for determining strategic ICT maturity

have obtained an understanding of the S-ICT toolkit

be able to identify different deployment strategies

be enthusiastic towards deploying the S-ICT toolkit to conduct an initial ICT maturity assessment within their own institution at the institutional, faculty, school, department or business unit level.

Curriculum Design: changing the paradigm

Abstract

This webinar explores emerging outcomes from the JISC Institutional Approaches to Curriculum Design programme, an ambitious intervention in one of the core practices of academic life. In the three years since its inception, the programme has seen radical, systemic change at some of the 12 participating institutions, and subtle, embedded change at others. Despite very different emphases, from managing course information to embedding new graduate attributes, evidence is emerging that joined-up thinking across the curriculum lifecycle can enhance processes, engage stakeholders, and generate more relevant learning opportunities.

Presenters

Sarah Knight, Programme Manager, e-Learning, JISC

Helen Beetham, e-Learning consultant

Marianne Sheppard, Researcher/Analyst, JISC InfoNet

What will you learn or take away?

Key lessons that participants will be able to apply in their own contexts will include:

benefits of a joined-up approach to managing course information

approaches to embedding 'new' graduate attributes

pointers for engaging stakeholders in the curriculum

Who is this webinar aimed at?

This webinar is aimed at everyone with strategic responsibility for curriculum design and development, from curriculum teams through curriculum managers to senior managers in the areas of learning and teaching/education/curriculum development. Those with responsibility for curriculum processes such as approval, course information management, and portfolio development will also be interested.

Meeting the research data challenge

Abstract

Nationally and internationally, the need to provide adequate storage for research data and to ensure the best possible exploitation of these assets is recognised as one of the most pressing challenges facing universities.

All UK Research Councils now have policies which require the data created by publicly funded research to be managed and retained according to best practice, and made available for reuse unless there are specific reasons not to do so. Added to this is the potential of requests for research data made under Freedom of Information legislation or Environmental Information Regulations. These requirements come directly from the principle that the outputs of publicly funded research – including data outputs – are a public good and should be available for verification and reuse.

Not all the drivers for improved management and sharing of research data are ‘top-down’, however. Researchers in a number of disciplines have demonstrated the benefits and value of data sharing. As a result there are vocal calls for making research data as open as possible.

These issues touch on those of research integrity. Ensuring research integrity and improving research data management are two closely related challenges facing universities. Research data management considers the need to have policies and processes governing the retention and preservation of data, and the ability, where necessary, to ensure security and to enable the appropriate sharing and publication of data, fundamental to ensuring research integrity.

It is essential, therefore, for universities to engage with the research data challenge and improve the way they support researchers in managing data through the research lifecycle, and making these outputs available for further exploitation.

There are many questions which need to be considered, for example: What technical infrastructure and support systems will best help researchers? What policies and procedures should govern the retention and disposal of research data? What are the ethical, legal and policy drivers to making data more readily available and what are the limits? Where should responsibility for supporting researchers in responding to these drivers lie? How may institutions and discipline bodies work together and help reduce the effort required on the part of researchers?
