Chesterton had a sense of humor, had a sense of drama, and had sense. He was a man of strong opinions, and quite willing to argue vehemently for his own opinions, even with his friends -- and they remained his friends. Seems to me that's hard to find anymore.

He wrote prolifically. He wrote humor. He wrote mystery novels, the Father Brown mysteries in particular. But he also wrote his opinions, his religious opinions and his opinions about religion. "Heretics" is a book about religion and politics, theory and fact, morals and efficiency.

What I most admire about "Heretics," written a bit over a century ago, is that his arguments are exceptional, and that so many of them are still quite recognizably true. He argues that the weakening and devaluing of religion has also weakened and devalued heresy. He argues that people should be able to speak freely -- but that freedom of speech has actually decreased people's willingness to speak about important issues. And so much more.

This isn't the book you might expect it to be. I think you'll enjoy it, and maybe even learn something. Even if you disagree with it.

Just wanted to give you a heads-up on my next book for the series.

I'll be recording a book called "Heretics," by G.K. Chesterton. It's not a story, it's a collection of essays on religion and politics, ethics and morality, heresy and orthodoxy. These are serious topics, yet the book manages to be clever and funny, I think, intelligent and witty and not at all vehement as discussions of these topics tend to be these days.

Chesterton was an intelligent man who didn't take himself too seriously. He was certainly willing to disagree vehemently, even with his friends, but they remained his friends, and he continued to admire and respect them, even while disagreeing with them. Seems like one doesn't see that much these days.

I hope you enjoy the book -- but if you feel strongly about only listening to stories, you'll have to exercise your judgement on this one. And it's a long enough book that I'll be doing it, probably, through the end of the year.

Hope you'll stick around. Give it a chance. But make up your own mind.

I wanted to point you to a video broadcast on the PBS program "Nature," called "Lobo: The Wolf That Changed America." The BBC originally did it, narrated by Richard Attenborough. The PBS version is narrated by F. Murray Abraham.

Hard to compete with. ;-)

This explains why "Wild Animals I Have Known" became such an important book, and to a point, why I recorded it.

Published in 1919, it tells the story of a Grizzly who ended up in a cage in Golden Gate Park, and the people who knew him. It's not quite as much a "Biography" as my previous Seton choice, but I really do like this book even so. And I felt like I had to return to Seton for this one, especially with NaPodPoMo.

Some of the humor would not be approved of these days, I suppose. But given that, the funny parts are still funny.

Amazon: The Biography Of A Grizzly

The beginning of "Biography of a Grizzly," by Ernest Thompson Seton. An old book, but I thought it appropriate for the first show in the "Stories from the Hiber-Nation" feed. Why "Hiber-Nation?' Because I was so proud of thinking of it, of course, even though it doesn't seem to mean anything in particular.

It's actually kind of sad in spots, especially if you like bears. Think Bambi with 3-inch claws.
