Massachusetts - Firefighters in Bourne are protesting an affordable veterinary clinic held weekly at the Sagamore Beach fire station saying that it poses a health risk to both firefighters and members of the community. The Professional Fire Fighters Union filed a grievance with the state's division of labor relations asking that the clinics be halted. [More]

The wildfire that has ravaged a national forest near Los Angeles has burned one plant species that authorities are happy to see go: marijuana. The fire destroyed an untold number of marijuana plantations in the Angeles National Forest, a growing hub for pot-growing operations in California. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Phil Abner says three marijuana cultivation areas identified just before the fire are believed to have burned and many more are assumed to have been destroyed. [More]

A teenager in suburban Detroit has apologized for lighting a man's pants on fire and causing a third-degree burn to the man's groin. (MD) - Frostburg Fire Chief Nathan Blubaugh holds a cat that he and firefighter Dana Kesner rescued from a tree at the rear of 23 Bowery St. on Thursday. The firefighters borrowed a boom lift from Frostburg Rental and Sales to reach the cat, which was about 40 feet off the ground. Firefighters Megan Blubaugh and Matt Briskey also responded.

Officials say a Fort Smith man digging in his garden unearthed a Civil War-era cannonball that's possibly still explosive. The unidentified man was tending to his garden Tuesday at his home when he found the rusted, 4-inch-diameter iron ball. Bill Black, the park superintendent of the Fort Smith National Historic Site, said the cannonball appears to be a live round that's about 145 years old. [More]
