Jordan will switch to wintertime on Friday, October 30. Clocks are to be set back by one hour as of midnight Thursday, October 29, making Jordan two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Most neighbouring countries - Palestine, Israel, Libanon, Egypt - had already switched back to Standard Time, Syria will set the clocks back on November 1st.
Iraq and Saudi Arabia time will remain unchanged.

Amman Marathon 2009 - 17 October 2009

The first Amman International Marathon, organized by the Greater Amman Municipality and the Society for the Care of Neurological Patients, will coincide with the 100th year anniversary of the founding of the modern day Amman.

The route of the race starts at the steps of the Greater Amman Municipality and the finishing line will be at the old Gladiator Park next to the Roman Amphitheatre in downtown Amman. The categories of the running events are 42 kms for professional runners, 10 kms Fun Run for leisure runners to encourage public participation, and 4 kms for children. Handicapped people can also participate using wheelchairs.

By participating in the Amman International Marathon you will also support the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and the Society for the Care of Neurological Patients.

AIM is accredited by IAAF (International Athletics Federation) as an international event.

The public sector in Jordan will observe Eid Al Fitr holidays between 20 and 23 September 2009, from Sunday to Wednesday and schools will be closed until 26 September.

Madonna visits Petra ruins

(AP) The Material Girl has wrapped up her world tour with a sightseeing trip to Jordan's famed ruins in Petra.
Madonna, 51, was flown by helicopter into this ancient Roman-era city carved out in red stone in a trip arranged by Queen Rania, the wife of Jordan's King Abdullah II.
The pop star, in a white shirt and white slacks, was escorted by Jordanian security and an armed bodyguard during her 15-minute tour Thursday.
She made no comment to reporters as she walked in almost total darkness. Jordanian security lit the area with headlights from their vehicles.
Madonna arrived in Jordan from neighboring Israel, where she performed two concerts over the last two days.

Ayla Aviation Academy (the Jordanian sister school of UK-based Atlantic Flight Training) located in Aqaba, has obtained JAA approval to conduct ATPL Theoretical Knowledge training at its ground school facility.

This makes Ayla Aviation Academy the only JAA ATPL (A) approved ground school in the Middle East. Ayla currently offers an ICAO Jordanian CPL/IR issued by the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) with a Frozen ATPL, an ICAO CPL/IR with fully approved JAA ATPL theoretical knowledge with Frozen ATPL and a joint program with AFT in which cadets can obtain a fully approved JAA license by completing a majority of their training at Ayla in Aqaba, Jordan and the remainder at AFT in Coventry, UK.

I find it strange that one week before the scheduled start of the month-long Jordan Festival, held between 7 July and 8 August 2009, there is no detailed information available on the internet at least not in English regading locations, venues and dates of the events.

I Google-d Jordan Festival 2009 and the #1 and 2 search results were the year-old blog post on 3amrdiab blog and even Visit Jordan, the official website of The Jordan Tourism Board that came up #3, had only a general announcement listing some events and performers names without specific details.

The following are from The Jordan Times, published today (30 June 2009):

Performers and artists from 43 countries are scheduled to take part in the month-long festival including Cuba, the Netherlands, China, India, Sri Lanka, France, Germany, Azerbaijan, Austria, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Morocco, the UK and the US among others.

Scheduled musical artists include Mohammad Abdo of Saudi Arabia, Kathem Al Saher of Iraq and Mohammad Munir of Egypt, as well as local singers Omar Abdullat and Diana Karazon.

Several folkloric groups will also take part in the festival, which will include musical performances, plays and puppet shows, Jordanian satirical readings and poetry recitals.

The festival is organised by the Jordan Festival higher commission, in cooperation with municipalities and civil society organisations in the Kingdom.

Last year marked the first annual Jordan Festival, which featured international and regional artists, such as opera singer Placido Domingo and Egyptian singer Amr Diab, performing in heritage sites, including the Roman ruins of Jerash and the Amman Citadel.

I also did a search for jordan festival on www.calendar.jo. No results found.

Thanks to Google I found Marcus Dillistone Film Directors Facebook profile with a link to www.jordanfestival.jo where I could watch a 29-second promotional video and download a 36-page Word document listing all the programs in Arabic and Arabic only.

So maybe non-Arab foreigners are not welcome to the Jordan Festival 2009?

Aqaba downtown beaches closed temporarily

AQABA (Petra) - The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) on 11 June 2009 closed the beaches at the northern and central coasts to visitors and tourists as a precautionary measure due to wastewater leakage. According to Bilal Bashir, ASEZA deputy chief commissioner, the leak resulted from a break in a water carrier line which was detected by the Aqaba Water Company. Reiterating that water pumping was transferred to the reserve pipeline, Bashir said ASEZA is carrying out precautionary measures, including lab tests of seawater. The shores will be reopened for visitors as soon as the problem is over, Bashir added.
