Swagger was one of the longest running music and art nights in Cambodia, a unique night of live art, multiple live projections from Warren Daly and Ebauche, a number of resident and guest DJs, live painting by Cambodian painter Dina Chhan, a chillout zone on a huge balcony, and of course the infamous main club room. Invisible Agent Records ran this epic monthly gig for nearly 2 years.

A jazzy laid-back affair mixed by Warren Daly. The first orbit begins with an instrumental piece by Pérez Prado, sometimes referred to as the King of Mambo. A Cuban band leader, singer, organist, pianist and composer, and with his dashing looks was also a movie star. Followed by a track entitled Asia Minor by Afro-Cuban Jazz legend Mario Bauzá, who brought his Cuban musical styles to the New York City jazz scene.

After traversing the greater American continent I had to include works by the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music, Miles Davis. His composition Shhh/Peaceful is the definition of space music. We float over the north Atlantic ocean to the UK for the experimental sounds of James Leyland Kirby a.k.a V/Vm, followed by the psychedelic and garage rock influenced Primal Scream (Scotland). A trip to the UK had to include Ambient pioneer, musician, composer, record producer, singer, writer, and visual artist, Brian Eno.

The mix is wrapped up by one of my favorite electronica tracks of all time, At Les by one of Detroit’s most important second generation of techno producers Carl Craig.

A few years ago I spent time in the Himalayas, traveling all around Nepal, and northern India. During that time I visited several music, and cultural centers where I purchased a lot of instrumental releases. I immersed myself in the amazing sounds of the Tabla, and I promised myself I would combine all my favorite tracks in a podcast. A friend (Richard) recently visited me on his journey to the Himalayas, he inspired me to finally combine some of my favorite music from the Indian subcontinent.

The Tabla

A drum that is synonymous with the region, estimated to be in use for over 2000 years, it requires complex finger tip and hand percussion techniques, and produces a range of wonderful and elaborate sounds.  It is made up of 2 drums. The smaller drum, played with the dominant hand, is sometimes called dayan (literally “right”), but it correctly known as “tabla.” Made out of teak or rosewood, it is tuned to the specific note of the soloist’s key, and complements the melody. The larger drum, played with the other hand, is called bāyāñ (literally “left”). The bāyāñ has a much deeper bass tone, normally made out of copper or brass, much like its distant cousin, the kettle drum. Combined they form an amazing instrument, for the record, this mix contains a myriad of traditional instruments, including stringed instruments such as the Sarod, Sarangi, and Sitar, and many others.

The Rhythm Masters

Here’s an overview of some of the artists featured on this podcast. Amjad Ali Khan is an Indian classical musician who plays the Sarod. He has performed internationally since the 1960s. The sarod is a lutelike stringed instrument of India, used mainly in Indian classical music. Along with the sitar, it is among the most popular and prominent instruments in Hindustani classical music. The sarod is believed by some to have descended from the Afghan rubab, a similar instrument originating in Central Asia and Afghanistan. The name sarod roughly translates to “beautiful sound” or “melody” in Persian.

I believe Navaraj Gurung, and Suresh Chandra Pradhan are both from Nepal. I bought their music at the Kathmandu Music Centre, after returning from one of my solo treks. Both of these musicians seem as if they’re naturally linked by rhythm and melody, I am certain their live performances are phenomenal. Nepal is one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, rich with culture, and incredible music.

A little further south in Northern Indian lives one of the greatest musicians of our time. Zakir Hussain, a classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order. His incredible performances have established him as a national treasure. Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Zakir’s contribution to world music has been unique, with countless historic collaborations.

Mickey Hart (from the United States) a musician who was a member of the rock band the Grateful Dead, produced the album Planet Drum. He played with percussionists from around the world, and incorporated their different musical styles. Musicians from India (Zakir Hussain and T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram), Nigeria (Sikiru Adepoju and Babatunde Olatunji), Brazil (Airto Moreira, and vocalist Flora Purim), and Puerto Rico (Giovanni Hidalgo and Frank Colón). Another quality album you should consider adding to your collection.

Sultan Khan (1940 – 2011) was an Indian sarangi player and classical vocalist. Sultan Khan was a member of the Indian fusion group Tabla Beat Science, with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. You should check out all the Table Beat Science releases, pure energy, and amazing melodies.

Vilayat Khan is a sitar maestro, a pioneer who at the age of 8 recorded his first 78RPM Vinyl, and performed his last concert in 2004 at the age of 75.  He introduced classical Indian music to the west, and is widely regarded by many as the greatest sitarist of his generation.

You might notice the final track, Parade Samba Music of Argentina, is obviously not from the same region, but it’s an amazing track, and complements the previous tracks so well I couldn’t help but include it.

Two radio broadcasts from the 1950’s and 23 tracks spanning six decades – mixed in under 40 minutes. Lazy jazz, swooning strings, ambient vibes, dub, electronica and old radio stories.

It’s a varied mix of periods and styles. But I think no matter what genre is playing, they all have something quite smooth and dreamlike in common…at least in my mind. I’m hoping to introduce new sounds to people who might not otherwise check this kind of stuff out, whilst re-introducing familiar tracks to others, in a new context.

I also chose radio broadcasts that would add a new level to the narrative side of the mix. So when Janelle Monáe sings about a character sleeping on some kind of sci-fi journey, the ‘Mysterious Traveler’ is waking up lost after a black-out in the wilderness. Similarly, when Squarepusher sings ‘I love you’ on Squarewindow (weird enough in itself) the Martian woman from the 1950s is swooning about being told how beautiful she is…

Admittedly I’ve been quite self-indulgent in my choice, but in essence it’s a typical lazy summer’s afternoon in the Audio Mainline household.

To me this is a very special mix as it’s exclusively showcasing tracks from one of my all-time favourite record labels, Em:t Records (aka Emit records).

Sadly the record label is no longer active, having released material in the 90’s before closing down, and then again in the early 00’s before meeting the same fate and shutting down again in 2006.

An extensive collection of Em:t Records releases

I’ve been trying to collect as much of the material released by Em:t Records for many years but still have quite a few to find. However I decided I had enough to dedicate an entire Swagger DJ set to the label, and hopefully the original artists will be pleased to see their work combined in this way.

If you’re interested in buying some of this music you can find a few releases still active on the web. Both Woob and Gas are active and I highly recommend buying Gas 0095 and everything that Woob has – really high quality ambient electronic music! You can find Gel-Sol’s newer releases on Bandcamp, but for his Em:t release you can head over to Emusic.com where you can find Gel-Sol, International People’s Gang, 302 Acid, and Gaudi:Testa. For Lucid Dreams 0096, Beatsystem 2297, and the two compilations it’s not such an easy task. You can get 2297, 0096, 0094, and 0004 on Amazon. There also seems to be quite a lot of Em:t releases on Grooveshark, but I’m doubtful as to whether anyone is getting any money from plays on there.

If you can use Bandcamp where possible then the original artists are getting paid! Other than that, it’s a treasure hunt to find these amazing releases and unlock the audio treasures inside.

This little mix gathers together a few tunes from the early days of many bands whose later output gave shape to the mix cassettes I spent so many hours rewinding with a pencil to save on batteries. There are snippets from the soundtracks of some of my favourite childhood films and shows, some new versions of some old classics and my favourite song from my first ever album. There are also one or two scratchy, early recordings from people to whom I have only recently warmed. I especially adore the penultimate track, “Folk Song” by Bongwater, which is fantastic in its ability to sum up everything that both rocked and sucked about the 1980s in 9 minutes. An audio visual extravaganza

Alex has been using Traktor software for a number of years now, and recently upgraded his hardware by purchasing a Native Instruments Z1 DJ interface. He was clearly having lots of fun using his new setup, and dazzled us with a stunning visual show projected by 2 large projectors on our massive chillout balcony. Every month he displays fresh stop-motion and hyper-lapse videos, keeping everyone mesmerized for hours.

Alex is also a sound engineer, and musician. He’s a member of WASH. WASH features music by Warren Daly, Alex Leonard (ebauche), and Hal Fx from Audio Mainline. A hybrid soundscape of rhythm, synthesis, live instrumentation and location recordings, guided by the poetry and spoken word of Scott Bywater. If you like downtempo styling you’ll enjoy their latest album entitled Triptych.

This is a mix of soporific ditties that I have stumbled across during my many hours of hobbyist music listening. I have been compiling this compilation of music slowly over the course of my first two years living in New Zealand having emigrated from Ireland. I was always someone who avidly and voraciously devoured new (to me, at least) music at a ferocious pace and I now host a specialist jazz show on a local independent radio station called Radio Active in Wellington. As a result my music listening is more focused in that I am always researching new music for my show, much of which is not suitable for the format and some of which has ended up here.

Over the last five years, I seem to have turned from an active composer and musician to someone who instead collects large, cumbersome and often hideously expensive music making equipment more for their visual appeal and use as a obstacle around which to be manoeuvred. Hence, I decided to put together this mix for Warren at Invisible Agent, who has patiently been waiting many years (has it been a decade?) for me to produce some new music for the label. This is, I hope the first step towards that eventual end. – Love Rhino
