As a metaphor, rivers appear in music, art, literature, and all the major religious traditions. Rivers symbolize the creative origins of life, a source of purification, and a means of transport–for both body and soul.

Rivers take on mythical and mystical meanings for each person, according to their experiences, upbringing, and education. Mark Twain made the river a character in his novels. The song “Moon River” has become an icon for life’s transitions. The Ganges and Yangtze and Jordan rivers are holy waters of purification, redemption, and enlightenment.

This music seeks to capture the myth and the mystery embodied by this universal symbol for life and the endless flow of experience between its shores. ~ Phillip Wilkerson

Just shy of 5 hours, this is a recording of an Ebauche DJ set at the chillout zone of Swagger, Meta House, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Swagger was one of the longest running music and art nights in Cambodia, a unique night of live art, multiple live projections from Warren Daly and Ebauche, a number of resident and guest DJs, live painting by Cambodian painter Dina Chhan, a chillout zone on a huge balcony, and of course the infamous main club room. Invisible Agent Records ran this epic monthly gig for nearly 2 years.

Weird synths build into walls of sound and fall away into a breathtaking panorama of auditory hallucinations; bells chime and disappear into the distance; distorted voices bubble under the surface, before being washed away; and mangled beats, held at arm’s length, burst into view when they can be restrained no longer.

This release from Ebauche was originally conceived for a net-series by The Alphabet Set, an Irish collective of artists which helped defined a sound for the Irish electronic scene.

Mucilage Biopsy was entirely recorded in one take in the artist’s studio in a remote location in Longford, Ireland in 2009 and gives a glimpse of a slightly different side to Ebauche’s music, one which has burst forth in a number of his live performances.

Whilst the release is contained in a single 40 minute track, there are distinct sections which meld into each other.

The introduction instantly grabs attention with chaotic mechanical polyrhythms eventually building to a wall of noise before giving way to much softer and more gentle melodies rebounding in the audio-spectrum. Again these sounds build and compile into another wall of noise before falling apart to be replaced with a rich sonic landscape; glimpses of voices underpin the core sounds just beyond the grasp of comprehension; and discordance appears and resolves and reappears before being left to linger in a hair-tingling chord which entirely encompasses you, constantly morphing and evolving.

The final section bubbles up from underneath this moment and reveals and entirely new dark and beat-driven underbelly. Beats tease, a-cappella voices hint at melodies, and rhythm fades in and out until a driving kick coheres the piece into a truly unique piece of densely layered electronic dance music.

This digitally re-mastered re-release on Invisible Agent records finally adds this special record to all major digital music services as well as seeing a CD release for the first time.

What is Sacred Spaces?

Sacred Spaces examines the role that sound has played in our spiritual and religious lives for thousands of years, and look at some of the similarities and differences between how sound is used for prayer and worship across religions and from country to country.

Cities & Memory invited contributors to provide field recordings of sacred spaces in November and December 2016, and shared those sounds with musicians, sound designers and sound artists, who have reimagined and recontexualised the sounds of our spiritual lives.

The project is the biggest Cities and Memory project so far, with 123 artists and field recordists from around the world presenting sounds from 34 countries.

(((o))): For those who don’t know you, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your label?

Invisible Agent was created in Ireland in 2000 with a good friend Donard McCabe. At the time there was little or no opportunity for local acts to receive exposure beyond playing local gigs. Initially it was set up solely as a net label to promote talent that had no platform and it evolved naturally into a full record label putting out physical releases and with regular events being organised for local and international acts in venues and at a variety of music and arts festivals.

We’ve had the pleasure to put out début releases for some amazing acts such as Lakker, Swarm Intelligence, Chymera, Ebauche and many more. In recent years I have produced several releases of my own work through the label as well as releasing on some other prestigious labels. I love being creative, through music, visual arts, or any medium that suits a particular project. I do it for the love of art.

(((o))): I noticed that your label distributes downloads, vinyl and prints can you tell us a bit more about the physical platforms and perhaps if there’s a unifying art direction or frequent collaborators that are crucial to the process?

The majority of paintings, prints, and published books are a part of much larger projects, art installations and live shows. It’s important to be unique and varied; I’m nurturing as many mediums as possible while ensuring the quality is maintained. The most recent album, “Adrift” by Ebauche includes paintings and prints by Polish artist Adrianna Snochowska and limited edition lathe cut vinyl, CDs, and digital downloads. Cambodian sculptor and painter Dina Chhan created a series of handmade frames and paintings for Ketsa’s album Al Kemet. Donn Maguire is our resident designer who has worked with us from day one and has created the artwork for many of our releases, event promotions, and website design. He’s amazingly talented and you’ll easily spot the releases he’s been involved in.

The more collaboration the better: sharing and learning from the processes and techniques of other artists using different mediums is critical. Its spurs more creativity, and leads to amazing creations. I’m planning to release more videos, books, prints, and vinyl in 2017 and beyond.

(((o))): How did your new album come to be released with we are all ghosts?

I met Thomas Mathie, the owner of We Are All Ghosts, many years ago on Twitter. He was writing reviews and eventually started his own label. They have an amazing roster of artists and releases, I sent him a promo and we took it from there. Thomas has a great attitude, lots of energy, and it’s a privilege for me to be released on his label.

(((o))): Would you guide us through the process and creative groundwork for the accompanying film?

All my creations are theme based, they all have a solid concept before I play a chord, shoot a photo, or compose a video. I always visualize in my mind with colours and sounds before I begin my journey. Each of my projects feeds into the next, my previous release Enter Cobalt was about exploring the vast unknown, Spiralling Continuum continues on this journey drifting through space and time. Soon to land on a distant planet in a parallel universe, and then….

(((o))): So was the video filmed or created otherwise?

I am an amateur video/photographer, I use KDEN on Linux and Divinci Resolve on Windows to edit etc.. I used loads of stills from ESA/Hubble and added aftereffects layers.

(((o))): How would you personally describe your sound?

I like to think it’s experimental, but it’s probably not. Entertain me.

(((o))): I’d say that’s a fair labelling along with ambient, electronica along with other tags in a similar thread.

(((o))): What gear do you like to use when making music and what was featured on the EP?

I record live violin, hang drums, tro Khmer and create unique instruments using Reaktor, and MaxForLive., I love U-he plug-ins, and all things Novation.
I love to travel, and this allows me to take a lot of surround sound location recordings. You’ll hear slices of audio as hits, longer sections granulated, or entire recordings as backdrops layered with synthesizers.

(((o))): What do you listen to when you want to chill out?

For ensured relaxation I’ll line up Phillip Wilkerson, Loscil, Ebauche, Ambienteer, Hakobune, Leonardo Rosado, Porya Hatami, and any of the ambient releases on Projekt Records.

I love the Hypnagogue podcast and the wonderful down-tempo selections from Renée Blanche on her show Nite Tides on KCUR

I try to explore music from around the world; My most recent selections have included Dub from Ethiopia, Psychedelic from Japan, and recordings of monochord zither from Vietnam.

(((o))): Are the any new artists or perhaps hidden gems you’d like to share with us?

Ambient artists to watch out for; Porya Hatami an experimental sound artist based in Iran.  Composer Phillip Wilkerson  – I recently stumbled on Wilkerson myself, he’s brilliant.

Chad Murray from Echoes & Dust recently reviewed the latest EP by Warren Daly on We Are All Ghosts

Pads exhaling a thousand falling grains of sand twirl inside an hour glass, ‘Time Dilation’ opens the album with a measured calm. Spellbinding rails of chilling high end frequencies traverse along the top of the sonorous ambient ascend. Pulsations in the deep, it’s a gradual incline building the most delicate, controlled intensity and then…ducks. Samples drag the track to a somnolent halt like watching an old man feeding the birds before gently falling asleep on a bench.

The respite allows Warren Daly to seamlessly take the album in a new direction with an iridescent synth lead waltzing through the middle of the track supported by a bassy foxtrot at the base of the Solar Flare’s tranquillising choreography.

The title track is simply stunning; again it dances with timid chirps and soporific pads but, this soothing electronic ballet is performed by a troupe of stars on a infinite cosmological stage of quasars and galaxies; infinitely expanding pads reaching out into a universe of light and colour and ineffable un-discoveries; beings and objects, entire planets which we have never encountered some of which we could never fathom. Spiralling Continuum along with its accompanying film does a good job of depicting an otherworldly beauty that is best described as “sublime”.

Undulating rhythms like the patter of falling snow, twinkling chimes glimmering bands of light out in all directions; a soft crumpling footsteps through warm winter sands crafting mounds of bass a the foundation. ‘Tropospheric Reflection’ is a delicate lullaby whispering the album away like a silkscreen fog.

A jazzy laid-back affair mixed by Warren Daly. The first orbit begins with an instrumental piece by Pérez Prado, sometimes referred to as the King of Mambo. A Cuban band leader, singer, organist, pianist and composer, and with his dashing looks was also a movie star. Followed by a track entitled Asia Minor by Afro-Cuban Jazz legend Mario Bauzá, who brought his Cuban musical styles to the New York City jazz scene.

After traversing the greater American continent I had to include works by the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music, Miles Davis. His composition Shhh/Peaceful is the definition of space music. We float over the north Atlantic ocean to the UK for the experimental sounds of James Leyland Kirby a.k.a V/Vm, followed by the psychedelic and garage rock influenced Primal Scream (Scotland). A trip to the UK had to include Ambient pioneer, musician, composer, record producer, singer, writer, and visual artist, Brian Eno.

The mix is wrapped up by one of my favorite electronica tracks of all time, At Les by one of Detroit’s most important second generation of techno producers Carl Craig.
