भगवती उमायाः प्रादुर्भाववर्णनम्

॥ उमोवाच ॥

Umā said

उमाले भनिन्

न ब्रह्मा न मुरारातिर्न पुरारातिरीश्वरः।
मदग्रे गर्वितुं किंचित्का कथान्यसुपर्वणाम्॥ २७

Neither Brahmā, nor Viṣṇu (the enemy of Mura), nor Śiva (the enemy of Tripura) is the Lord who can boast anything before Me; what to speak of other demigods?

न ब्रह्मा, न मुरारि (विष्णु), न पुरारि (शिव) मेरो अगाडि केही घमण्ड गर्न सक्ने ईश्वर होइनन्; अरू देवताहरूको त कुरै के गर्नु?

परं ब्रह्म परं ज्योतिः प्रणवद्वन्द्वरूपिणी।
अहमेवास्मि सकलं मदन्यो नास्ति कश्चन॥ २८

I am the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Light, the form of the sacred syllable Oṁ and its twofold manifestation. I alone am everything; other than Me, nothing exists.

म नै परम ब्रह्म हुँ, परम ज्योति हुँ, प्रणव (ॐ) र त्यसको द्वन्द्वरूपिणी हुँ। म नै सबै केही हुँ; म बाहेक अरू केही छैन।

निराकारापि साकारा सर्वतत्त्वस्वरूपिणी।
अप्रतर्क्यगुणा नित्या कार्यकारणरूपिणी॥ २९

Though formless, I possess form too; I am the essence of all principles (tattvas). I am beyond logic, eternal, and of the nature of both cause and effect.

निराकार भए पनि म साकार छु, सबै तत्त्वहरूको स्वरूप हुँ। म तर्कभन्दा पर, नित्य हुँ, र कार्य र कारण दुवैको रूप हुँ।

कदाचिद्दयिताकारा कदाचित्पुरुषाकृतिः।
कदाचिदुभयाकारा सर्वाकाराहमीश्वरी॥ ३०

Sometimes I appear as the beloved consort (female form), sometimes as the male form, sometimes as both forms together. I am the Supreme Goddess of all forms.

कहिले म प्रियाको रूपमा हुन्छु, कहिले पुरुषको आकृतिमा, कहिले दुवैको रूपमा। म सबै आकारवाली ईश्वरी हुँ।

विरञ्चिः सृष्टिकर्ताहं जगत्पाताहमच्युतः।
रुद्र: संहारकर्ताहं सर्वविश्वविमोहिनी॥ ३१

I am Brahmā (Virañci) the creator, I am Acyuta (Viṣṇu) the protector of the universe, I am Rudra (Śiva) the destroyer, and I am the deluder of the entire world.

म नै ब्रह्मा (विरञ्चि) सृष्टि गर्ने, म नै अच्युत (विष्णु) जगत्को पालनकर्ता, म नै रुद्र (शिव) संहारकर्ता, र म नै सम्पूर्ण विश्वलाई मोहित पार्ने हुँ।

कालिकाकमलावाणीमुखाः सर्वा हि शक्तयः।
मदंशादेव संजातास्तथेमा: सकला: कलाः॥ ३२

All the powers, such as Kālī, Kamalā (Lakṣmī), Vāṇī (Sarasvatī), and others, are born only from a part of Me. Similarly, all these (other) arts and energies are My fragments.

काली, कमला (लक्ष्मी), वाणी (सरस्वती) लगायत सबै शक्तिहरू मेरो अंशले मात्र जन्मिएका हुन्। यस्तै यी सबै कलाहरू पनि मेरै अंश हुन्।

मत्प्रभावाज्जिता: सर्वे युष्माभिर्दितिनन्दनाः।
तामविज्ञाय मां यूयं वृथा सर्वेशमानिनः॥ ३३

By My influence only, all the sons of Diti (demons) have been conquered by you. But not knowing Me, you falsely consider yourselves as the lords of everything.

मेरै प्रभावले दितिका सबै सन्तानहरू (दैत्यहरू) तिमीहरूद्वारा जितिएका छन्। तर मलाई नचिनेर तिमीहरू व्यर्थमा नै सबैका ईश्वर ठान्दछौ।

यथा दारुमयीं योषां नर्तयत्यैन्द्रजालिकः।
तथैव सर्वभूतानि नर्तयाम्यहमीश्वरी॥ ३४

Just as a magician makes a wooden doll dance, in the same way, I, the Supreme Goddess, make all beings dance.

जसरी एउटा जादूगरले काठको पुतली नचाउँछ, त्यसरी नै म, ईश्वरी, सबै प्राणीहरूलाई नचाउँछु।

मद्भयाद्वाति पवनः सर्वं दहति हव्यभुक्।
लोकपाला: प्रकुर्वन्ति स्वस्वकर्माण्यनारतम्॥ ३५

Out of fear of Me, the wind blows; out of fear of Me, the fire burns everything. The protectors of the worlds (Lokapālas) constantly perform their respective duties.

मेरो डरले बतास चल्छ, मेरो डरले अग्निले सबै जलाउँछ। लोकपालहरूले आ-आफ्नो कर्म निरन्तर गर्दै छन्।

कदाचिद्देववर्गाणां कदाचिद्दितिजन्मनाम्।
करोमि विजयं सम्यक् स्वतन्त्रा निजलीलया॥ ३६

Sometimes I cause victory for the hosts of gods, and sometimes for the demons (born of Diti), perfectly by My independent will, just for My own sport (līlā).

कहिले देवताहरूको, त कहिले दैत्यहरूको (दितिको सन्तान) म विजय गराउँछु, पूर्ण रूपमा आफ्नो स्वतन्त्र इच्छाले, मेरो निज लीलाको लागि।

अविनाशि परं धाम मायातीतं परात्परम्।
श्रुतयो वर्णयन्ते यत्तद्रूपं तु ममैव हि॥ ३७

That indestructible supreme abode, beyond Māyā, higher than the highest, which the Vedas (Śrutis) describe — that form is indeed Mine alone.

त्यो अविनाशी परम धाम, मायाभन्दा पर, परात्पर, जसलाई श्रुतिहरू (वेदहरू) वर्णन गर्छन् — त्यो रूप मेरो मात्र हो।

सगुणं निर्गुणं चेति मद्रूपं द्विविधं मतम्।
मायाशबलितं चैकं द्वितीयं तदनाश्रितम्॥ ३८

My form is considered to be of two types: with attributes (Saguṇa) and without attributes (Nirguṇa). One is tinged by Māyā, and the other is completely beyond it.

मेरो रूप दुई प्रकारको मानिन्छ: सगुण र निर्गुण। एउटा मायाले व्याप्त छ, र दोस्रो त्यसभन्दा पूर्णतः असंलग्न छ।

एवं विज्ञाय मां देवा: स्वं स्वं गर्वं विहाय च।
भजत प्रणयोपेताः प्रकृतिं मां सनातनीम्॥ ३९

Thus knowing Me, O gods, give up all your pride and worship Me, the eternal Prakṛti (Primordial Nature), with deep affection.

यसरी मलाई जानेर, हे देवताहरू, आ-आफ्नो घमण्ड त्यागेर, प्रणययुक्त भई सनातनी प्रकृति — मलाई भजन गर।

इति श्रीशिवमहापुराणे पञ्चम्यामुमासंहितायामुमाप्रादुर्भाववर्णनं नामैकोनपञ्चाशत्तमोऽध्यायः ॥ ४९ ॥

Thus ends the 49th chapter named "Description of the Manifestation of Umā" in the fifth section Umāsaṃhitā of the glorious Śivamahāpurāṇa.

सूत उवाच
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि लिंगं रामेश्वराभिधम्।
उत्पन्नं च यथा पूर्वमृषयः शृणुतादरात्॥ १

Suta said: Henceforth I shall describe the Linga named Rameshvara, how it manifested in ancient times — listen with reverence, O sages.

सूतले भने: यसपछि म रामेश्वर नामको लिङ्गको वर्णन गर्नेछु, जुन पहिले कसरी प्रकट भयो — हे ऋषिहरू, आदरपूर्वक सुन्नुहोस् ।

पुरा विष्णुः पृथिव्यां चावततार सतां प्रियः ॥२

In ancient times, Vishnu, the beloved of the virtuous, descended upon the earth.

प्राचीनकालमा सत्पुरुषहरूका प्रिय विष्णु पृथ्वीमा अवतरित भए ।

तत्र सीता हता विप्रा रावणेनोरुमायिना।
प्रापिता स्वगृहं सा हि लंकायां जनकात्मजा॥ ३

There, O Brahmins, Sita was abducted by the greatly deceptive Ravana; the daughter of Janaka was taken to his own home in Lanka.

त्यहाँ हे ब्राह्मणहरू, सीतालाई ठूलो मायावी रावणले हरण गरेर आफ्नो घर लंकामा पुर्यायो, जो जनककी पुत्री थिइन् ।

अन्वेषणपरस्तस्याः किष्किन्धाख्यां पुरीमगात्।
सुग्रीवहितकृद्भूत्वा वालिनं संजघान ह॥ ४

Intent on searching for her, he went to the city named Kishkindha. Becoming a well-wisher of Sugriva, he slew Vali.

उनको खोजीमा तत्पर भई राम किष्किन्धा नगरमा पुगे। सुग्रीवको हितैषी बनेर वालीलाई मारे ।

तत्र स्थित्वा कियत्कालं तदन्वेषणतत्परः।
सुग्रीवाद्यैर्लक्ष्मणेन विचारं कृतवान्स वै॥ ५

Staying there for some time, absorbed in searching for her, he deliberated with Sugriva, Lakshmana and others.

त्यहाँ केही समय बसेर, सीताको खोजीमा लागेर, सुग्रीव, लक्ष्मण आदिसँग उनले विचार गरे ।

कपीन् संप्रेषयामास चतुर्दिक्षु नृपात्मजः।
रामस्तदन्वेषणहेतवे॥ ६

The prince Rama dispatched monkeys in all four directions for the purpose of searching her.

राजपुत्र रामले सीताको खोजीका लागि चारै दिशामा वानरहरू पठाए ।

अथ ज्ञात्वा गतां लंकां सीतां कपिवराननात्।
सीताचूडामणिं प्राप्य मुमुदे सोऽति राघवः॥ ७

Then having learned from the chief monkey that Sita was taken to Lanka, and after receiving Sita’s crest-jewel, Rama rejoiced greatly.

त्यसपछि मुख्य वानरबाट सीता लंकामा रहेको थाहा पाएर र सीताको चूडामणि पाएर राघव अत्यन्त प्रसन्न भए ।

सकपीशस्तदा रामो लक्ष्मणेन युतो द्विजाः।
पुण्यैर्वानरैर्बलवत्तरैः॥ ८
पद्मैरष्टादशाख्यैश्च ययौ तीरं पयोनिधेः।
दक्षिणे सागरे यो वै दृश्यते लवणाकरः॥ ९

With the monkey-king, Lakshmana and the mighty virtuous monkeys, O Brahmins, and with eighteen crore (padma) warriors, Rama marched to the shore of the ocean — to the southern sea which is the abode of salt.

वानरराज र लक्ष्मणसहित, हे ब्राह्मणहरू, पुण्यशाली र अत्यन्त बलशाली वानरहरू र अठार पद्म सेनासहित राम समुद्रको तीरमा गए — दक्षिण सागरको लवणसमुद्र ।

तत्रागत्य स्वयं रामो वेलायां संस्थितो हि सः।
वानरैः सेव्यमानस्तु लक्ष्मणेन शिवप्रियः॥१०

Arriving there, Rama himself stayed on the seashore, served by monkeys and Lakshmana — the one dear to Shiva.

त्यहाँ आएर राम स्वयं समुद्रको किनारमा बसे, वानरहरू र लक्ष्मणद्वारा सेवित — जो शिवप्रिय हुन् ।

हा जानकी कुतो याता कदा चेयं मिलिष्यति।
अगाधः सागरश्चैवातार्या सेना च वानरी॥ ११

"Alas, where has Janaki gone? When will she be met? The ocean is unfathomable and the monkey army has to be crossed."

"हे जानकी, कता गइन्? कहिले भेट हुने हो? यो अगाध समुद्र छ र वानर सेनालाई पार गर्नुपर्छ ।"

राक्षसो गिरिधर्ता च महाबलपराक्रमः।
लंकाख्यो दुर्गमो दुर्ग इंद्रजित्तनयोऽस्य वै॥१२

The demon Ravana is a mountain-holder, of great strength and valor. Lanka is an impregnable fortress, and his son is Indrajit.

राक्षस रावण पर्वत धारण गर्ने, महाबलशाली र पराक्रमी छ। लंका अभेद्य दुर्ग हो र उसको छोरा इन्द्रजित् शक्तिशाली छ ।

इत्येवं स विचार्यैव तटे स्थित्वा सलक्ष्मणः।
आश्वासितो वनौकोभिरंगदादिपुरःसरैः ॥१३

Thus reflecting, he stayed on the shore with Lakshmana. He was consoled by the forest-dwellers led by Angada and others.

यसरी सोची, लक्ष्मणसहित किनारामा बसे। अंगद आदि वनवासीहरूले उनलाई सान्त्वना दिए ।

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र राघवः शैवसत्तमः।
उवाच भ्रातरं प्रीत्या जलार्थी लक्ष्मणाभिधम्॥ १४

Meanwhile, Raghava, the foremost devotee of Shiva, feeling thirsty, lovingly addressed his brother named Lakshmana.

यसैबीच, राघव शिवभक्त श्रेष्ठ, प्यासले व्याकुल भई प्रेमपूर्वक आफ्ना भाइ लक्ष्मणलाई भने ।

श्रीराम उवाच
भ्रातर्लक्ष्मण वीरेशाहं जलार्थी पिपासितः।
तदानय द्रुतं पाथो वानरैः कैश्चिदेव हि॥ १५

Shri Rama said: O heroic brother Lakshmana, I am thirsty and desire water. So bring water quickly with some monkeys.

श्रीरामले भने: हे वीर भाइ लक्ष्मण, म प्यासले तर्सिरहेको छु, तिमी केही वानरहरूसँग छिटो पानी ल्याऊ ।

सूत उवाच
तच्छुत्वा वानरास्तत्र ह्यधावन्त दिशो दश।
नीत्वा जलं च ते प्रोचुः प्रणिपत्य पुरः स्थिताः ॥ १६

Suta said: Hearing that, the monkeys ran in ten directions. Bringing water, they bowed and stood before him, saying:

सूतले भने: यो सुनेर वानरहरू दसैं दिशामा दगुरे। पानी ल्याएर झुके र अगाडि उभिएर भने:

वानरा ऊचु:
जलं च गृह्यतां स्वामिन्नानीतं तत्त्वदाज्ञया।
महोत्तमं च सुस्वादु शीतलं प्राणतर्पणम्॥ १७

The monkeys said: O Lord, please take this water brought by your order. It is excellent, sweet, cool and refreshing for life.

वानरहरूले भने: हे स्वामी, तपाईंको आज्ञाले ल्याइएको यो पानी ग्रहण गर्नुहोस्। यो अत्यन्त उत्तम, सुस्वादु, शीतल र प्राणलाई तृप्त गर्ने छ ।

सूत उवाच
सुप्रसन्नतरो भूत्वा कृपादृष्ट्या विलोक्य तान्।
तच्छुत्वा रामचन्द्रोऽसौ स्वयं जग्राह तज्जलम्॥ १८

Suta said: Becoming extremely pleased, looking at them with compassionate eyes, Rama Chandra himself took that water.

सूतले भने: अत्यन्त प्रसन्न भई, कृपादृष्टिले तिनीहरूलाई हेरी, रामचन्द्रले स्वयं त्यो पानी लिए ।

स शैवस्तज्जलं नीत्वा पातुमारब्धवान्यदा।
तदा च स्मरणं जातमित्थमस्य शिवेच्छया। १९

When that devotee of Shiva (Rama) took the water to drink, then by Shiva's will, a remembrance arose in him thus:

जब त्यो शिवभक्त रामले पानी पिउन थाले, तब शिवको इच्छाले यसो स्मरण भयो:

न कृतं दर्शनं शंभोर्गृह्यते च जलं कथम्।
स्वस्वामिन: परेशस्य सर्वानंदप्रदस्य वै॥ २०

"Without worshipping Lord Shambhu, how can I take water? (the water belongs to) The Supreme Lord who is the bestower of all bliss."

"शम्भुको दर्शन र पूजा नगरी कसरी पानी लिइयोस्? सबै आनन्द दिने परमेश्वर मेरो स्वामीको प्रसाद बिना उचित छैन ।"

इत्युक्त्वा च जलं मुक्तं तदा रघुवरेण च।
पश्चाच्च पार्थिवीं पूजां चकार रघुनंदनः ॥ २१

Saying this, the best of Raghus released the water. Afterwards, the delighted Raghunandana performed earthly worship (to Shiva).

यसो भनी रघुश्रेष्ठले पानी छोडिदिए। पछि रघुनन्दनले पार्थिव पूजा (शिवलिङ्ग पूजा) गरे ।

आवाहनादिकांश्चैव ह्युपचारान्प्रकल्प्य वै।
विधिवत्षोडशं प्रीत्या देवमानर्च शङ्करम्॥ २२

Performing the rites from invocation (avahana) and all sixteen offerings, he lovingly worshipped Lord Shankara according to scripture.

आवाहनादि सोह्र उपचार विधिपूर्वक रची, प्रेमपूर्वक शंकर देवको पूजा गरे ।

प्रणिपातैः स्तवैर्दिव्यैः शिवं संतोष्य यत्नतः।
प्रार्थयामास सद्भक्त्या स रामः शंकरं मुदा ॥ २३

Satisfying Shiva with prostrations and divine hymns, that Rama joyfully prayed to Shankara with pure devotion.

प्रणिपात र दिव्य स्तुतिहरूद्वारा शिवलाई सन्तुष्ट पारी, रामले प्रसन्नतापूर्वक शंकरसँग सद्भक्तिले प्रार्थना गरे ।

श्रीराम उवाच
स्वामिन् शंभो महादेव सर्वदा भक्तवत्सल।
पाहि मां शरणापन्नं त्वद्भक्तं दीनमानसम्॥ २४

Shri Rama said: O Lord Shambhu, Mahadeva, ever affectionate to devotees, protect me who has taken refuge in You, Your devotee with humble mind.

श्रीरामले भने: हे स्वामी शम्भो, महादेव, सधैं भक्तवत्सल, तपाईंको शरणमा आएको आफ्नो भक्तलाई रक्षा गर्नुहोस् ।

एतज्जलमगाधं च वारिधेर्भवतारण।
रावणाख्यो महावीरो राक्षसो बलवत्तरः ॥ २५

This water of the deep ocean has to be crossed. (There is) the great demon named Ravana, very powerful.

यो अगाध समुद्रको पानी पार गर्नुपर्छ। रावण नामको महावीर राक्षस अति बलशाली छ ।

वानराणां बलं ह्येतच्चञ्चलं युद्धसाधनम्।
मम कार्यं कथं सिद्धं भविष्यति प्रियाप्तये॥ २६

This monkey army is fickle as a war-instrument. How will my mission for attaining my beloved be accomplished?

यो वानर सेना युद्धको साधनमा चञ्चल छ। प्रियाको प्राप्तिको मेरो कार्य कसरी सिद्ध हुनेछ?

तस्मिन्देव त्वया कार्यं साहाय्यं मम सुव्रत।
साहाय्यं ते विना नाथ मम कार्यं हि दुर्लभम्॥२७

Therefore, O God, assistance must be given by You (to me). O Lord, without Your help, my task is impossible.

त्यसैले हे देव, तपाईंले मेरो सहायता गर्नुपर्छ। हे नाथ, तपाईंको सहायता बिना मेरो कार्य असम्भव छ ।

त्वदीयो रावणोऽपीह दुर्जयः सर्वथाखिलैः।
त्वद्दत्तवरदृप्तश्च महावीरस्त्रिलोकजित्॥ २८

This Ravana, though blessed by You, is invincible for everyone, proud of boons given by You, great hero, conqueror of three worlds.

यो रावण तपाईंको वरदानले गर्दा सबैका लागि दुर्जेय छ, तीनै लोकको विजेता महावीर र तपाईंको दत्त वरले गर्वित ।

अप्यहं तव दासोऽस्मि त्वदधीनश्च सर्वथा।
विचार्येति त्वया कार्यः पक्षपातः सदाशिव॥ २९

Yet I am Your servant, always under Your command. Considering this, O Sadashiva, You must favor me.

यद्यपि म तपाईंको दास हुँ र सदा तपाईंको अधीन छु। यो विचार गरेर, हे सदाशिव, तपाईंले पक्षपात गर्नुपर्छ ।

सूत उवाच
इत्येवं स च संप्रार्थ्य नमस्कृत्य पुनः पुनः।
तदा जय जयेत्युच्चैरुद्घोषैः शंकरेति च॥ ३०

Suta said: Praying thus and bowing again and again, then with loud chants of 'Jaya Jaya' and 'Shankara' ...

सूतले भने: यसरी प्रार्थना गरेर र बारम्बार नमस्कार गरेर, त्यसपछि 'जय जय' र 'शंकर'को उच्च घोषले...

इति स्तुत्वा शिवं तत्र मंत्रध्यानपरायणः।
पुनः पूजां ततः कृत्वा स्वाम्यग्रे स ननर्त ह॥३१

Having thus praised Shiva and being absorbed in mantra and meditation, he again performed worship and danced before his Lord.

यसरी शिवको स्तुति गरेर, मन्त्र र ध्यानमा परायण भई, पुनः पूजा गरेर र आफ्नो स्वामीको अगाडि नाचे ।

प्रेमविक्लिन्नहृदयो गल्लनादं यदाकरोत्।
तदा च शंकरो देवः सुप्रसन्नो बभूव ह॥ ३२

When his heart melted with love and he shed tears of joy, then Lord Shankara became greatly pleased.

प्रेमले हृदय विगलेर जब रामले स्वर निकाले, तब शंकरदेव अत्यन्त प्रसन्न भए ।

सांग: सपरिवारश्च ज्योतीरूपो महेश्वरः।
यथोक्तरूपममलं कृत्वाविरभवद् द्रुतम्॥ ३३

Maheshvara, with His consort and family, in the form of effulgent Jyotirlinga, assuming the immaculate form as described, appeared swiftly.

महेश्वर आफ्ना अंग (पार्वती) र परिवारसहित ज्योतिर्मय रूपमा, शुद्ध रूप धारण गरी शीघ्र प्रकट भए ।

ततः संतुष्टहृदयो रामभक्त्या महेश्वरः।
शिवमस्तु वरं ब्रूहि रामेति स तदाब्रवीत्॥३४

Then Maheshvara, with a contented heart due to Rama’s devotion, said: “O Rama, ask for a boon. May it be auspicious.”

त्यसपछि रामको भक्तिबाट सन्तुष्ट हृदय भएका महेश्वरले भने: "हे राम, वर माग, कल्याण होस् ।"

तद्रूपं च तदा दृष्ट्वा सर्वे पूतास्ततः स्वयम्।
कृतवान् राघवः पूजां शिवधर्मपरायणः॥ ३५

Beholding that divine form, all became purified. Raghava, devoted to Shiva’s dharma, performed worship.

त्यो रूप देखेर सबै पवित्र भए। राघव शिवधर्म परायण भई शिवको पूजा गरे ।

स्तुतिं च विविधां कृत्वा प्रणिपत्य शिवं मुदा।
जयं च प्रार्थयामास रावणाजौ तदात्मनः॥३६

Offering various hymns and bowing joyfully to Shiva, he prayed for victory in the battle against Ravana.

विभिन्न स्तुति गरेर र प्रसन्नतापूर्वक शिवलाई प्रणाम गरेर, रावणको युद्धमा आफ्नो विजयको प्रार्थना गरे ।

ततः प्रसन्नहृदयो रामभक्त्या महेश्वरः।
जयोऽस्तु ते महाराज प्रीत्या स पुनरब्रवीत्॥३७

Then Maheshvara, pleased by Rama’s devotion, again lovingly said: “Victory be to you, O great king!”

त्यसपछि रामको भक्तिले प्रसन्न महेश्वरले फेरि प्रीतिपूर्वक भने: "हे महाराज, तपाईंलाई जय होस् ।"

शिवदत्तं जयं प्राप्य ह्यनुज्ञां समवाप्य च।

Having obtained victory granted by Shiva and having received permission, he again prayed with folded hands and bowed head.

शिवले दिएको विजय प्राप्त गरेर र अनुज्ञा पाएर, उनले फेरि हात जोडी टाउको निहुराई प्रार्थना गरे ।

श्रीराम उवाच
त्वया स्थेयमिह स्वामिंल्लोकानां पावनाय च।
परेषामुपकारार्थं यदि तुष्टोऽसि शंकर॥३९

Shri Rama said: O Lord, if You are pleased, please remain here for the purification of the worlds and for the benefit of others.

श्रीरामले भने: हे स्वामि, यदि तपाईं प्रसन्न हुनुहुन्छ भने लोकहरूको पवित्रताका लागि र अरूको उपकारार्थ यहाँ नै स्थिर हुनुहोस् ।

सूत उवाच
इत्युक्तस्तु शिवस्तत्र लिंगरूपोऽभवत्तदा।
रामेश्वरश्च नाम्ना वै प्रसिद्धो जगतीतले॥ ४०

Suta said: Thus addressed, Shiva then became a Linga there. He became famous on earth by the name Rameshvara.

सूतले भने: यसरी भनिएपछि शिव त्यहाँ लिङ्गरूपमा भए। तिनै संसारमा ‘रामेश्वर’ नामले प्रसिद्ध भए ।

रामस्तु तत्प्रभावाद्वै सिन्धुमुत्तीर्य चाञ्जसा।
रावणादीन्निहत्याशु राक्षसान्प्राप तां प्रियाम्॥४१

Rama by the power of that Linga crossed the ocean easily, slew Ravana and other demons, and regained His beloved Sita.

रामले त्यस लिङ्गको प्रभावले सजिलै समुद्र तरे, रावण आदि राक्षसहरू मारे र आफ्नी प्रिय सीतालाई प्राप्त गरे ।

रामेश्वरस्य महिमाद्भुतोऽभूद्धुवि चातुलः।
भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदश्चैव सर्वदा भक्तकामदः॥४२

The glory of Rameshvara became wonderful and incomparable in heaven, granting enjoyment and liberation, always fulfilling devotees’ wishes.

रामेश्वरको महिमा अद्भुत र असाधारण भयो। यसले भुक्ति र मुक्ति प्रदान गर्दछ र सधैं भक्तहरूको कामना पूरा गर्दछ ।

दिव्यगंगाजलेनैव स्नापयिष्यति यः शिवम्।
रामेश्वरं च सद्भक्त्या स जीवन्मुक्त एव हि॥ ४३

Whoever bathes Lord Rameshvara with holy Ganga water with true devotion, he is indeed liberated while living (jivanmukta).

जसले रामेश्वर शिवलाई दिव्य गंगाजलले सद्भक्तिपूर्वक स्नान गराउँछ, त्यो जीवन्मुक्त नै हुन्छ ।

इह भुक्त्वाखिलान्भोगान्देवानां दुर्लभानपि।
अंते प्राप्य परं ज्ञानं कैवल्यं प्राप्नुयाद् ध्रुवम्॥४४

Having enjoyed all the pleasures in this world, even those rare for gods, at the end attaining supreme knowledge, one surely attains kaivalya (liberation).

यस लोकमा देवताहरूलाई पनि दुर्लभ सबै भोग भोगेर, अन्तमा परम ज्ञान प्राप्त गरी निश्चय नै कैवल्य मोक्ष प्राप्त गर्दछ ।

इति वश्च समाख्यातं ज्योतिर्लिंगं शिवस्य तु।
रामेश्वराभिधं दिव्यं शृण्वतां पापहारकम्॥ ४५

Thus the Jyotirlinga of Shiva named Rameshvara is described to you, divine and destroying sins of those who listen.

यस प्रकार शिवको रामेश्वर नामको ज्योतिर्लिंग तिमीहरूलाई वर्णन गरियो, जो दिव्य छ र सुन्नेहरूको पाप नाश गर्दछ ।

Brahmā and Viṣṇu said: Salutations to the formless One, the pure undivided radiance. Salutations to the Lord of all, the Self within all beings.

Nepali Meaning:
ब्रह्मा र विष्णुले भने— निष्कल रूप भएका, निष्कल तेज भएका प्रभुलाई नमस्कार। सबैका स्वामी, सबै प्राणिहरूका अन्तरात्मालाई नमस्कार।

नमः प्रणववाच्याय नमः प्रणवलिङ्गिने।
नमः सष्ट्यादिकर्त्रे च नमः पञ्चमुखाय ते॥

English Meaning:
Salutations to the One indicated by Om, whose symbol is the Pranava. Salutations to the creator of creation and dissolution, the Five‑faced Lord.

English Meaning:
Salutations to the One who is the Five Brahmas and performs the Five Cosmic Acts. To You who are the Self, the Supreme Brahman, the possessor of infinite powers.

Nepali Meaning:
पाँच ब्रह्मरूप भएका, पाँच कृत्यका अधिष्ठाता प्रभुलाई नमस्कार। आत्मस्वरूप, ब्रह्मस्वरूप, अनन्त शक्तिका धनीलाई नमस्कार।

सकलाकलरूपाय शम्भवे गुरवे नमः।

I praise the bliss‑form Goddess who shines brilliantly within the central channel (suṣumnā),
residing inside the lotus of the six chakras, melting and drinking the nectar of immortality.

छ चक्रका कमलभित्र सुशुम्ना नाडीमा तेजोमय भएर विराजमान,
अमृतमण्डललाई पगाल्दै पान गर्ने आनन्दरूप भगवतीलाई म वन्दना गर्छु।

ज्वलत्कोटिबालार्कभासारुणाङ्गीं सुलावण्यशृङ्गारशोभाभिरामाम् ।
महापद्मकिञ्जल्कमध्ये विराजत् त्रिकोणोल्लसन्तीं भजे श्रीभवानीम् ॥

I worship Bhavānī, whose body glows like millions of rising suns,
beautiful with grace and charm, shining in the triangle at the center of the great lotus.

लाखौँ उदाउँदो सूर्यजस्तै अरुण तेजले चम्किने,
लावण्य र शोभाले रमणीय, महापद्मको त्रिकोणमा विराजमान श्री भवानीलाई म भजन्छु।

॥ ३ ॥

क्वणत्किङ्किणीनूपुरोद्भासिरत्नप्रभालीढलाक्षार्द्रपादारविन्दम् ।
अजेशाच्युताद्यैः सुरैः सेव्यमानं महादेवि मन्मूर्ध्नि ते भावयामि ॥

O Great Goddess, whose lotus‑feet are moist with red lac and adorned with anklets and jewels,
served by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and other gods — I meditate upon You on the crown of my head.

रत्नजडित नूपुर र किङ्किणीले झन्झनिएको, लाक्षारक्तले रञ्जित पादकमल,
ब्रह्मा, विष्णु आदि देवताले सेवित — हे महादेवी, म तपाईंलाई आफ्नो शिरमाथि ध्यान गर्छु।

॥ ४ ॥

सुषोणाम्बराबद्धनीवीविराजन्महारत्नकाञ्चीकलापं नितम्बम् ।
स्फुरद्दक्षिणावर्तनाभिं च तिस्रो वली रम्यते रोमराजिं भजेऽहम् ॥

I adore Your waist, adorned with a red garment, a shining jeweled girdle,
and three beautiful folds above the navel, glowing with fine lines of beauty.

रक्ताम्बरले ढाकिएको, रत्नजडित कञ्चीले सुशोभित नितम्ब,
नाभीमाथि तीन रमणीय वलिहरू र रोमावलीले सुशोभित — म त्यस रूपलाई भजन्छु।

॥ ५ ॥

लसद्वृत्तमुत्तुङ्गमाणिक्यकुम्भोपमश्री स्तनद्वन्द्वमम्बाम्बुजाक्षि ।
भजे पूर्णदुग्धाभिरामं तवेदं महाहारदीप्तं सदा प्रस्नुतास्यम् ॥

O lotus‑eyed Mother, I worship Your radiant, full, jewel‑like breasts,
and Your face ever glowing with the sweetness of flowing nectar.

हे कमलनयनी माता, म तपाईंका माणिक्यकुम्भजस्ता उज्याला स्तनद्वय,
र सधैँ अमृतरसले झल्किने मुखकमललाई भजन्छु।

॥ ६ ॥

शिरीषप्रसूनोल्लसद्बाहुदण्डैर्ज्वलद्बाणकोदण्डपाशाङ्कुशैश्च ।
चलत्कङ्कणोदारकेयूरभूषोज्ज्वलद्भिर्स्फुरन्तीं भजे श्रीभवानीम् ॥

I worship Bhavānī whose arms shine like delicate śirīṣa flowers,
holding bow, arrows, noose, and goad, adorned with bracelets and armlets.

शिरीष फूलजस्ता कोमल बाहुदण्ड,
धनुष, बाण, पाश र अङ्कुश धारण गरेकी,
कङ्कण र केयूरले झल्किने श्री भवानीलाई म भजन्छु।

॥ ७ ॥

शरत्पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभापूर्णबिम्बाधरस्मेरवक्त्रारविन्दश्रियं ते ।
सुरत्नावलीहारताटङ्कशोभां भजे सुप्रसन्नामहं श्रीभवानीम् ॥

I worship the ever‑gracious Bhavānī, whose smiling lotus‑face shines like the full autumn moon,
adorned with jewel necklaces and radiant earrings.

शरद् पूर्णिमाको चन्द्रजस्तै उज्यालो, मुस्कानले खिलेको मुखकमल,
रत्नहार र चम्किला टाटङ्कले सुशोभित — सुप्रसन्न भवानीलाई म भजन्छु।

॥ ८ ॥

सुनासापुटं पद्मपत्रायताक्षं यजन्तः श्रियं दानदक्षं कटाक्षम् ।
ललाटोल्लसद्गन्धकस्तूरिभूषं स्फुरच्छ्रीमुखाम्भोजमीडेऽहमम्ब ॥

O Mother, I praise Your beautiful nose, lotus‑petal‑like long eyes,
grace‑bestowing glance, and forehead adorned with sandal and musk.

हे अम्बा, म तपाईंको सुन्दर नासिका, पद्मदलजस्ता दीर्घ नेत्र,
वरदान दिने कटाक्ष, र चन्दन–कस्तूरीले सुशोभित ललाटको स्तुति गर्छु।

॥ ९ ॥

चलत्कुण्डलां ते भ्रमद्भृङ्गवृन्दां घनस्निग्धधम्मिल्लभूषोज्ज्वलन्तीम् ।
स्फुरन्मौलिमाणिक्यमध्येन्दुरेखाविलासोल्लसद्दिव्यमूर्धानमीडे ॥

I praise Your divine head, shining with swinging earrings,
dark glossy hair adorned with flowers, and a crescent moon among the jewels.

चलायमान कुण्डलले झन्झनिएको,
घना, स्निग्ध केशराशिमा फूलहरू,
रत्नमुकुटभित्र चम्किने चन्द्ररेखासहितको दिव्य शिर — म स्तुति गर्छु।

॥ १० ॥

स्फुरत्वम्ब बिम्बस्य मे हृत्सरोजे सदा वाङ्मयं सर्वतेजोमयं च ।
इति श्रीभवानिस्वरूपं तदेवं प्रपञ्चात्परं चातिसूक्ष्मं प्रसन्नम् ॥

May Your radiant form shine forever in my heart‑lotus,
as the source of all speech and all brilliance — the subtle, supreme Bhavānī.

मेरो हृदयकमलमा सधैँ वाणी र तेजको मूलरूप भएर
तपाईंको सूक्ष्म, परम, प्रसन्न स्वरूप झल्किरहोस्।

॥ ११ ॥

गणेशाणिमाद्याखिलैः शक्तिवृन्दैः स्फुरच्छ्रीमहाचक्रराजोल्लसन्तीम् ।
परां राजराजेश्वरीं त्वा भवानीं शिवाङ्कोपरिस्थां शिवां भावयामि ॥

I meditate on You, Bhavānī — the Supreme Queen of Queens,
shining in the great chakra, surrounded by Gaṇeśa and other Śaktis, seated on Śiva’s lap.

गणेश आदि शक्तिहरूले परिवेष्ठित,
महाचक्रमा उज्यालो, शिवको अंकमा विराजमान
राजराजेश्वरी भवानीलाई म ध्यान गर्छु।

॥ १२ ॥

त्वमर्कस्त्वमिन्दुस्त्वमग्निस्त्वमापस्त्वमाकाशभूर्वायवस्त्वं चिदात्मा ।
त्वदन्यो न कश्चित्प्रकाशोऽस्ति सर्वं सदानन्दसंवित्स्वरूपं तवेदम् ॥

You are the Sun, the Moon, Fire, Water, Earth, Space, and Air —
the Conscious Self. Nothing shines apart from You; all is Your bliss‑consciousness.

तपाईं नै सूर्य, चन्द्र, अग्नि, जल, पृथ्वी, आकाश र वायु,
चैतन्यस्वरूप — तपाईंबाहेक अरू कुनै प्रकाश छैन;
सबै तपाईंको आनन्द–चेतनाको रूप हो।

॥ १३ ॥

गुरुस्त्वं शिवस्त्वं च शक्तिस्त्वमेव त्वमेवासि माता पिताऽसि त्वमेव ।
त्वमेवासि विद्या त्वमेवासि बुद्धिर्गतिर्मे मतिर्देवि सर्वं त्वमेव ॥

You are my Guru, You are Śiva, You are Śakti.
You alone are my Mother and Father.
You are knowledge, wisdom, my path, and my understanding — You are everything.

तपाईं नै गुरु, तपाईं नै शिव, तपाईं नै शक्ति।
तपाईं नै आमा, तपाईं नै पिता।
विद्या, बुद्धि, मार्ग, मति — सबै तपाईं नै हुनुहुन्छ, हे देवी।

॥ १४ ॥

श्रुतीनामगम्यं सुवेदागमाद्यैर्महिम्नो न जानाति पारं तवेदम् ।
स्तुतिं कर्तुमिच्छामि ते त्वं भवानि क्षमस्वेदमम्ब प्रमुग्धः किलाहम् ॥

Your greatness cannot be reached even by the Vedas and Āgamas.
Still, O Bhavānī, I wish to praise You — forgive me, O Mother, for my simplicity.

वेद–आगमहरूले पनि नपुग्ने तपाईंको महिमा,
तैपनि म तपाईंको स्तुति गर्न चाहन्छु —
हे अम्बा, मेरो सरलताका लागि क्षमा गर्नुहोस्।

॥ १५ ॥

शरण्ये वरेण्ये सुकारुण्यपूर्णे हिरण्योदराद्यैरगम्येऽतिपुण्ये ।
भवारण्यभीतं च मां पाहि भद्रे नमस्ते नमस्ते नमस्ते भवानि ॥

O Refuge‑giver, Most Excellent, Full of Compassion,
beyond the reach of beings like Hiraṇyākṣa — protect me, frightened in the forest of worldly life.
Salutations again and again to You, O Bhavānī.

हे शरणदायिनी, श्रेष्ठ, करुणामयी,
हिरण्याक्ष आदि असुरले नपुग्ने अतिपुण्य स्वरूप —
संसाररूपी वनमा त्रस्त भएको मलाई रक्षा गर।
भवानी, तपाईंलाई बारम्बार नमस्कार।

इमामन्वहं श्रीभवानीभुजङ्गस्तुतिर्यः पठेच्छ्रोतुमिच्छेत तस्मै ।
स्वकीयं पदं शाश्वतं चैव सारं श्रियं चाष्टसिद्धिं भवानी ददाति ॥

Whoever recites or listens to this Bhavānī‑Bhujaṅga Stuti daily,
Bhavānī grants them Her eternal abode, true essence, prosperity, and the eight siddhis.

जो मानिसले यो भवानी–भुजङ्ग स्तुति दैनिक पढ्छ वा सुन्छ,
भवानीले उसलाई आफ्नो शाश्वत धाम, सत्य सार, श्री–समृद्धि
र अष्टसिद्धि प्रदान गर्नुहुन्छ।

॥ मन्त्रः ॥

ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्लीं सर्वपूज्ये देवी मङ्गलचण्डिके ।
ऐं क्रूं फट् स्वाहेत्येवं चाप्येकविंशाक्षरो मनुः ॥
This is the 21‑syllable sacred mantra of Devi Mangalachandika, invoking auspiciousness, protection, and fulfillment of desires.

पूज्यः कल्पतरुश्चैव भक्तानां सर्वकामदः ।
दशलक्षजपेनैव मन्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेन्नृणाम् ॥
This mantra is like a wish‑fulfilling tree; by chanting it one million times, perfection of the mantra is attained.

मन्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेद् यस्य स विष्णुः सर्वकामदः ।
ध्यानं च श्रूयतां ब्रह्मन् वेदोक्तं सर्वसम्मतम् ॥

देवीं षोडशवर्षीयां शश्वत्सुस्थिरयौवनाम् ।
सर्वरूपगुणाढ्यां च कोमलाङ्गीं मनोहराम् ॥
Meditate on the Devi as a sixteen‑year‑old, eternally youthful, full of all divine qualities, with a gentle and enchanting form.

श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभां चन्द्रकोटिसमप्रभाम् ।
वन्हिशुद्धांशुकाधानां रत्नभूषणभूषिताम् ॥
Her complexion is like white champaka flowers, radiant like millions of moons, adorned with pure garments and jewels.

बिभ्रतीं कबरीभारं मल्लिकामाल्यभूषितम् ।
बिम्बोष्टिं सुदतीं शुद्धां शरत्पद्मनिभाननाम् ॥
Her hair is decorated with jasmine garlands; her lips are red like bimba fruit; her face shines like an autumn lotus.

ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यां सुनीलोल्पललोचनाम् ।
जगद्धात्रीं च दात्रीं च सर्वेभ्यः सर्वसंपदाम् ॥
Her gentle smile radiates compassion; her eyes resemble blue lotuses. She is the sustainer of the universe and giver of all prosperity.

संसारसागरे घोरे पोतरूपां वरां भजे ।
I worship the Devi who is the boat that carries beings across the ocean of worldly existence.

॥ शंकर उवाच ॥

रक्ष रक्ष जगन्मातर्देवि मङ्गलचण्डिके ।
हारिके विपदां राशेर्हर्षमङ्गलकारिके ॥
O Mother of the universe, protect us! O Mangalachandika, remover of calamities, You bring joy and auspiciousness.

हर्षमङ्गलदक्षे च हर्षमङ्गलचण्डिके ।
शुभे मङ्गलदक्षे च शुभमङ्गलचण्डिके ॥
Expert in granting joy and auspiciousness, O Chandika, embodiment of all that is blessed.

मङ्गले मङ्गलार्हे च सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गले ।
सतां मङ्गलदे देवि सर्वेषां मङ्गलालये ॥
O Mangalā, worthy of worship, source of all auspiciousness, refuge of auspiciousness for all beings.

You are worshipped especially on Tuesdays and by kings of the Manu lineage.

मङ्गलाधिष्ठातृदेवि मङ्गलानां च मङ्गले ।

The beauty of the wreath made of your victims’ skulls looks splendid as do the weapons and missiles in all your ten hands. You carry a cranial bowl, a sword, a three-pronged trident, an axe, a club, a disc, a bow and a conch, all in their proper places.

The beautiful skirt made of severed arms of your enemies looks so becoming like the sacred ornaments adorning every part of your body. Your ten dread feet are all smeared with blood and your long tongue sticks out, rendering your appearance frightening.

जबहिं अट्टहास माँ करती।
काँपत थर-थर थर-थर धरती॥११॥
आदि शक्ति धनि जग धात्री।
महा प्रलय की अधिष्ठात्री॥१२॥

When, O Mother, you laugh aloud, the earth shivers (like one suffering from shaking chills). Blessed are you, O Primordial Energy and foster-mother of the world, you are the presiding deity of Doom (who causes universal destruction).

O Mother Kali! It is your divine feet that made Shiva’s appearance possible in the world; you have long protruding tongue and a frightening look. Blessed, all blessed are you O Mother Kali of Calcutta, who are thousand-armed and who have your abode in Shivapura.

तूही काली सिय दशमुख नाश्यो।

O Kali, as Sita you were instrumental in bringing about Ravana’s destruction and Raghupati’s victory which, appearing became amorous of the Lord’s feet. You assumed manifold forms for the well being peace and happiness of the world.

तू ही श्री कृष्ण रूप की काली।
चन्द्रहास मुरली कर वाली॥१७॥
चतुर्भुजी तनु अष्टभुजी धारी।
कहुँ दशभुज अष्टादशकरी॥१८॥

candrahása murali kara váli.
caturbhuji tanu aştabhuji dhārī,
kahun daśabhuja aştādaśakari.

You manifested yourself in the form of Krishna and let your sword be mysteriously transformed into a flute in his hand. Sometimes you take on the form of Vishnu with his four arms, at other times of one (Durga, for example) having eight arms, at still other one having ten or eighteen arms.

कहुँ बत्तीस चौसठ भुज धारत।
कहुँ सहस्त्र भुज करि अरि मारत॥१९॥
तू हरि शक्ति अर्द्ध निशि वाली।
तीक्ष्णदन्त रसना रिसि वाली॥२०॥

You sometimes appear with thirty-two arms, at other times with just the double this number, and at still others you multiply your arms into a thousand in order to slay your enemies. You are the very power of Hari invoked with prayer at midnight; you have long sharp fangs and a protruding tongue showing your blood-thirsty and fearsome nature.

रक्तचण्डिका खड़ग धारिणी।
रुद्र चन्द्रिका खल संहारिणी॥२१॥
श्री शतश्रृंगी आद्य काली।
काली खोह निवासिनी वाली॥२२॥

You are furious combatant with a sword in your hand (you are usually shown on the battlefield or in a cremation ground where you sit on a corpse surrounded by jackals and goblins); you are at once soothing like the moon and fearsome like Rudra and the slayer of the wicked. You are a sublime as a hundred-peaked mountain and a primordial deity of black or dark complexion. You dwell amongst dark, untrodden caverns.

आदि मातु तूही नर शिरमाली।
तुम्हीं कंस हननी वैताली॥२३॥
तुम्ही भद्रकाली कैलाशी।
सदा खलन के रक्त की प्यासी॥२४॥

You are the original mother (of all beings) and at the same time a dread deity with human heads for your garland; you are the very slayer of Kansa and sub-doer of ghosts and goblins; you are yourself Bhadrakali, a dweller on Kailasha and one who thirsts for the blood of the wicked.

खच-खच-खच शिर कटि शत्रु कर।
भर-भर-भर शोणित खप्पर भर॥२५॥
दल-दल-दल दानव भक्षण कर।
छल-छल छल-छल रक्त खलन कर॥२६॥

Again and again you strike off the heads of your enemies (with your lashing sword) and fill your cranial bowl with blood (oozing from corpses). You gorge yourself on the demon host one after another and rushing on and on shed their wicked blood.

गनि-गनि-गनि अरि करहु निपाता।
धनि-धनि-धनि श्री काली माता॥२७॥
यहि अरदास दास कहँ माई।
पूरहु आस तु होउ सहाई॥२८॥

gani-gani-gani ari karahu nipātā,
dhani-dhani-dhani śrī kāli mātā.
yahi aradasa dāsa kahań mãi,
pūrahu asa tu hou sahāi.

Blessed, blessed, blessed are you, O Mother Kali, who cause your enemies to lick the dust one after another. I entreat you, O mother, to fulfil your votary’s expectations and grant him your favour.

पर्यो गाढ़ संकट अब भारी।
केहि का मैया आज पुकारी॥२९॥
चारि चोर लाग्यो मग मोही।
करन चहत रघुपति को द्रोही॥३०॥

paryo. gāRha saſkața aba bhäri,
kehi ka maiyā āja pukāri.
cāri cora lagyo maga mohi,
karana cahata raghupati ko drohi.

I am in a perilous predicament O Mother, and know not whom to call for help. I am being pursued on the rough roads of life by four robbers who are bent upon turning me against the Lord of the house of Raghu Rama.

है येही शत्रुन का भूपा।
काम क्रोध मोह लोभ सरूपा॥३१॥
इन्हीं देहुँ यदि अन्त पछारी।
तबहिं मिलहिं भगवन्त मुरारी॥३२॥
hai yehi śatruna kā bhūpā,
kama krodha moha lobha sarūpā.
inhirn dehuri yadi anta pachārī,
tabahiň milahiri bhagavanta murari.

These are my prime enemies, the sovereign lords of all the deadly evils; lust, anger, infatuation and avarice. If you overthrow them (and abandon me not to my troubles), I would be blessed with devotion to the enemy of Mura, namely, Lord Krishna.

दूजो एक अर्ज यह माता।
तोड़हु सपदि खलन के ताँता॥३३॥
जेते दुष्ट महा अपराधी।
बदकर्मी पामर बक व्याधी॥३४॥
dūjo eka arja yaha mātā,
toRahu sapadi khalana ke taňtā.
jete duşta mahā aparādhi,
badakarmi pamara baka vyādhi.

I also urge you, Mother, to put an end to the unending string of the wicked (bent on vexing me) immediately. All those wicked souls, who are confirmed sinners, evil-doers, mean and suffer from idle volubility and vain chattering:

जो नित बिनु अपराध सतावत।
धर्म कर्म शुभ हो न पावत॥३५॥
तिन्हीं मातु तू चकि जा हाली।
बचन पुत्र की होय न खाली॥३६॥

JO NITA BINU APARAADHA SATAAVATA

BACHANA PUTRA KII HOYA NA KHAALII

Those who cause vexation without being provoked and who render all religious observances and propitious activities fruitless, you pick up, O Mother and slaughter them without delay; let not this prayer of your son go in vain.

पुनि बनि ऐन्द्री आवहु माता ।
अद्भुत शक्ति दिखावहु माता ॥३७॥
झटपट लेहु खलहिं संहारी।
मोरि मातु जनि करहु अबारी॥३८॥

I entreat you, O Mother, to reveal yourself as the power of Indra (or as Indrani or as Durga) and display your wondrous might. Slay the villains promptly without further delay.

भरहु शान्ति सुख धन जन धामा।
अति आनन्द होई यह ग्रामा ॥३९॥
पुनि पुनि विनवहि सुन्दरदासा।
मैया पूर करहु अभिलाषा॥४०॥
bharahu sānti sukha dhana jana dhămā,
ati ananda hoi yaha grāmā.
puni puni vinavahi sundaradāsā,
maiyā pūra karahu abhilāşā.

Fill the homes of your devotees with peace, happiness and prosperity so that this countryside becomes a seat of growing exultation and felicity. Sundardasa bows to you again and again, O Mother, and supplicates you to fulfill his expectations.

Kali incarnates the very vital force and power of Hari with which she destroys her enemies for the well being of the world.

Chapter X

On the description of Mani Dvîpa

1-20. Vyâsa said :-- O King Janamejaya! What is known in the S’rutis, in the Subâla Upanisada, as the Sarvaloka over the Brahmaloka, that is Manidvîpa. Here the Devî resides. This region is superior to all the other regions. Hence it is named “Sarvaloka.” The Devî built this place of yore according to Her will. In the very beginning, the Devî Mûla Prakriti Bhagavatî built this place for Her residence, superior to Kailâs’a, Vaikuntha and Goloka. Verily no other place in this universe can stand before it. Hence it is called Manidvîpa or Sarvaloka as superior to all the Lokas. This Manidvîpa is situated at the top of all the regions, and resembles an umbrella. Its shadow falls on the Brahmânda and destroys the pains and sufferings of this world. Surrounding this Manidvîpa exists an ocean called the Sudhâ Samudra, many yojanas wide and many yojanas deep. Many waves arise in it due to winds. Various fishes and conches and other aquatic animals play and here the beach is full of clear sand like gems. The sea-shores are kept always cool by the splashes of the waves of water striking the beach. Various ships decked with various nice flags are plying to and fro. Various trees bearing gems are adorning the beach. Across this ocean, there is an iron enclosure, very long and seven yojanas wide, very high so as to block the Heavens. Within this enclosure wall the military guards skilled in war and furnished with various weapons are running gladly to and fro. There are four gateways or entrances; at every gate there are hundreds of guards and various hosts of the devotees of the Devî. Whenever any Deva comes to pay a visit to the Jagadîs’varî, their Vâhanas (carriers) and retinue are stopped here. O King! This place is being resounded with the chimings of the bells of hundreds of chariots of the Devas and the neighings of their horses and the sounds of their hoofs. The Devas walk here and there with canes in their hands and they are chiding at intervals the attendants of the Devas. This place is so noisy that no one can hear clearly another’s word. Here are seen thousands of houses adorned with trees of gems and jewels and tanks filled with plenty of tasteful good sweet waters. O King! After this there is a second enclosure wall, very big and built of white copper metal (an amalgam of zinc or tin and copper); it is so very high that it almost touches the Heavens. It is hundred times more brilliant than the preceding enclosure wall; there are many principal entrance gates and various trees here. What to speak of the trees there more than this that all the trees that are found in this universe are found there and they bear always flowers, fruits and new leaves! All the quarters are scented with their sweet fragrance!

21-40. O King! Now hear, in brief, the names of some of the trees that are found in abundance there :-- Panasa, Vakula, Lodhra, Karnikâra, S’ins’apa, Deodâra, Kânchanâra, mango, Sumeru, Likucha, Hingula, Elâ, Labanga, Kat fruit tree, Pâtala, Muchukunda, Tâla, Tamâla, Sâla, Kankola, Nâgabhdra, Punnâga, Pîlu, Sâlvaka, Karpûra, As’vakarna, Hastikarna, Tâlaparna, Pomegranate, Ganikâ, Bandhujîva, Jamvîra, Kurandaka, Châmpeya, Bandhujîva, Kanakavriksa, Kâlâguru (usually coiled all over with cobras, very black poisonous snakes), Sandaltree, Datetree,Yûthikâ, Tâlaparnî, Sugarcane, Ksîra-tree, Khadira, Bhallâtaka, Ruchaka, Kutaja, Bel tree and others, the Talasî and Mallikâ and other forest plants. The place is interspersed with various forests and gardens. At intervals there are wells, tanks, etc., adding very much to the beauty of the place. The cuckoos are perching on every tree and they are cooing sweetly, the bees are drinking the honey and humming all around, the trees are emitting juices and sweet fragrance all around. The trees are casting cool nice shadows. The trees of all seasons are seen here; on the tops of these are sitting pigeons, parrots, female birds of the Mayanâ species and other birds of various other species. There are seen rivers flowing at intervals carrying many juicy liquids. The Flamingoes, swans, and other aquatic animals are playing in them. The breeze is stealing away the perfumes of flowers and carrying it all around. The deer are following this breeze. The wild mad peacocks are dancing with madness and the whole place looks very nice, lovely and charming. Next this Kâmsya enclosure comes the third enclosure wall of copper. It is square shaped and seven yojanas high. Within this are forests of Kalpavriksas, bearing golden leaves and flowers and fruits like gems. Their perfumes spread ten yojanas and gladden things all around. The king of the seasons preserves always this place. The king’s seat is made of flowers; his umbrella is of flowers; ornaments made of flowers; he drinks the honey of the flowers; and, with rolling eyes, he lives here always with his two wives named Madhu S’rî and Mâdhava S’rî. The two wives of Spring have their faces always smiling. They play with bunches of flowers. This forest is very pleasant. Oh! The honey of the flowers is seen here in abundance. The perfumes of the full blown flowers spread to a distance of ten yojanas. The Gandharbhas, the musicians, live here with their wives.

41-60. The places round this are filled with the beauties of the spring and with the cooing of cuckoos. No doubt this place intensifies the desires of the amorous persons! O King! Next comes the enclosure wall, made of lead. Its height is seven yojanas. Within this enclosure there is the garden of the Santânaka tree. The fragrance of its flowers extends to ten yojanas. The flowers look like gold and are always in full bloom. Its fruits are very sweet. They seem to be imbued with nectar drops. In this garden resides always the Summer Season with his two wives S’ukra S’rî and S’uchi S’rî. The inhabitants of this place always remain under trees; otherwise they will be scorched by summer rays. Various Siddhas and Devas inhabit this place. The female sensualists here get their bodies all anointed with sandal paste and all decked with flower garlands and they stalk to and fro with fans in their hands. There is water to be found here very cool and refreshing. And owing to heat all the people here use this water. Next to this lead enclosure comes the wall made of brass, the fifth enclosure wall. It is seven yojanas long. In the centre is situated the garden of Hari Chandana trees. Its ruler is the Rainy Season.

The lightnings are his auburn eyes; the clouds are his armour, the thunder is his voice and the rainbow is his arrow. Surrounded by his hosts he rains incessantly. He has twelve wives :-- (1) Nabhah S’rî, (2) Nabhahsya S’rî, (3) Svarasya, (4) Rasyasâlinî, (5) Ambâ, (6) Dulâ, (7) Niratni, (8) Abhramantî, (9) Megha Yantikâ, (10) Varsayantî, (11) Chivunikâ, and (12) Vâridhârâ (some say Madamattâ). All the trees here are always seen with new leaves and entwined with new creepers. The whole site is covered all over with fresh green leaves and twigs. The rivers here always flow full and the current is strong, indeed! The tanks here are very dirty like the minds of worldly persons attached to worldly things. The devotees of the Devî, the Siddhas and the Devas and those that consecrated in their life times tanks, wells, and reservoirs for the satisfaction of the Devas dwell here with their wives. O King! Next to this brass enclosure comes, the sixth enclosure wall made of five fold irons. It is seven yojanas long. In the centre is situated the Garden of Mandâra trees. This garden is beautified by various creepers, flowers and leaves. The Autumn season lives here with his two wives Isalaksmî and Ûrjalaksmî and he is the ruler. Various Siddha persons dwell here with their wives, well clothed. O King! Next to this comes the seventh enclosure wall, seven yojanas long and built of silver.

61-80. In the centre is situated the garden of Pârijâta trees. They are filled with bunches of flowers. The fragrance of these Pârijâtas extend upto the ten Yojanas and gladden all the things all around. Those who are the Devî Bhaktas and who do the works of the Devî are delighted with this fragrance. The Hemanta (Dewy) season is the Regent of this place. He lives here with his two wives Saha S’rî and Sahasya S’rî and with his hosts. Those who are of a loving nature are pleased hereby. Those who have become perfect by performing the Vratas of the Devî live here also. O King! Next to this silver, there comes the eighth enclosure wall built of molten gold. It is seven Yojanas long. In the centre there is the garden of the Kadamba tree. The trees are always covered with fruits and flowers and the honey is coming out always from the trees from all the sides. The devotees of the Devî drink this honey always and feel intense delight; the Dewy Season is the Regent of this place. He resides here with his two wives Tapah S’rî and Tapasyâ S’rî and his various hosts, and enjoys gladly various objects of enjoyments. Those who had made various gifts for the Devî’s satisfaction, those great Siddha Purusas live here with their wives and relatives very gladly in various enjoyments. O King! Next to this golden enclosure well comes the ninth enclosure made of red Kum Kum like (saffron) Pusparâga gems. The ground inside this enclosure, the ditches or the basins for water dug round their roots are all built of Pusparâga gems. Next to this wall there are other enclosure walls built of various other gems and jewels; the sites, forests, trees, flowers birds, rivers, tanks, lotuses, mandapas (halls) and their pillars are all built respectively of those gems. Only this is to be remembered that those coming nearer and nearer to the centre are one lakh times more brilliant than the ones receding from them. This is the general rule observed in the construction of these enclosures and the articles contained therein. Here the Regents of the several quarters, the Dikpâlas, representing the sum total of the several Dikpâlas of every Brahmânda and their guardians reside. On the eastern quarter is situated the Amarâvatî city. Here the high-peaked mountains exist and various trees are seen. Indra, the Lord of the Devas, dwells here. Whatever beauty exists in the separate Heavens in the several places, one thousand times, rather more than that, exists in the Heaven of this cosmic Indra, the thousand-eyed, here. Here Indra mounting on the elephant Airâvata, with thunderbolt in his hand, lives with S’achî Devî and other immortal ladies and with the hosts of the Deva forces. On the Agni (south¬eastern) corner is the city of Agni. This represents the sum total of the several cities of Agni in different Brahmândas.

81-100. Here resides the Agni Deva very gladly with his two wives Svâhâ and Svadhâ and with his Vâhana and the other Devas. On the south is situated the city of Yama, theGod of Death. Here lives Dharma Râja with rod in his hand and with Chitragupta and several other hosts. On the south-westen corner is the place of the Râksasas. Here resides Nirriti with his axe in his hand and with his wife and other Râksasas. On the west is the city of Varuna. Here Varuna râja resides with his wife Vârunî and intoxicated with the drink of Vârunî honey; his weapon is the noose, his Vâhana is the King of fishes and his subjects are the aquatic animals. On the north-western corner dwells Vâyudeva. Here Pavana Deva lives with his wife and with the Yogis perfect in the practice of Prânâyâma. He holds a flag in his hand.

His Vâhana, is deer and his family consists of the forty nine Vâyus. On the north resides the Yaksas. The corpulent King of the Yaksas, Kuvera, lives here with his S’aktis Vriddhi and Riddhi, and in possession of various gems and jewels. His generals Manibhadra, Purna bhadra, Manimân, Manikandhara, Manibhûsa, Manisragvî, Manikar-mukadhârî, etc., live here. On the north eastern corner is situated the Rudra loka, decked with invaluable gems. Here dwells the Rudra Deva. On His back is kept the arrow-case and he holds a bow in his left hand. He looks very angry and his eyes are red with anger. There are other Rudras like him with bows and spears and other weapons, surrounding him. The faces of some of them are distorted; some are very horrible indeed! Fire is coming out from the mouths of some others. Some have ten hands; some have hundred hands and some have thousand hands; some have ten feet; some have ten heads whereas some others have three eyes. Those who roam in the intermediate spaces between the heaven and earth, those who move on the earth, or the Rudras mentioned in the Rudrâdhyâya all live here. O King! Îsâna, the Regent of the north eastern quarter lives here with Bhadrakâlî and other Mâtriganas, with Kotis and Kotis of Rudrânîs and with Dâmarîs and Vîra Bhadras and various other S’aktis. On his neck there is a garland of skulls, on his hand there is a ring of snakes; he wears a tiger skin; his upper clothing is a tiger skin and his body is smeared with the ashes of the dead. He sounds frequently his Damaru; this sound reverberates on all sides, he makes big laughs called Attahâsya, reverberating through the heavens. He remains always surrounded with Pramathas and Bhûtas; they live here.

Here ends the Tenth Chapter of the Twelfth Book on the description of Mani Dvîpa in the Mahâpurânam S’rî Mad Devî Bhâgavatam of 18,000 verses by Maharsi Veda Vyâsa.

Chapter XI

On the description of the enclosure walls built of Padmarâga mani, etc., of the Mani Dvîpa

1-30. Vyâsa said :-- O King Janamejaya! Next to this Pusparâga mani enclosure wall comes the tenth enclosure wall, made of Padmarâga mani, red like the red Kunkuma and the Rising Sun. It is ten yojanas high. All its ground, entrance gates and temples and arbours are all made of Padmarâga mani. Within this reside the sixty four Kalâs or Sub-S’aktis adorned with various ornaments and holding weapons in their hands. Each of them has a separate Loka (region) allotted and within this Loka he has get his own formidable weapons, Vâhanas, families and their leaders or Governors. O King! Now hear the names of the sixty four Kalâs. They are :--Pingalâksî, Vis’âlâksî, Samriddhi, Vriddhi, S’raddhâ, Svâhâ, Svadhâ, Mâyâ, Sañgñâ, Vasundharâ, Trîlokadhâtrî, Sâvitrî, Gâyatrî, Tridas’es’vsrî, Surûpâ, Bahurûpâ, Skandamâtâ, Achyutapriyâ, Vimalâ, Amalâ, Arunî, Ârunî, Prakriti, Vikriti, S’rîsti, Sthiti, Samrhiti, Sandhyâ, Mâtâ, Satî, Hamsî, Mardikâ, Vajrikâ, Parâ, Devamâtâ, Bhagavatî, Devakî, Kamalâsanâ, Trimukhî, Saptamukhî, Surâsura vimardinî, Lambosthî, Ûrdhakes’î, Bahusîrsâ, Vrikodarî Ratharekhâhvayâ, S’as’irekâ, Gaganavegâ, Pavanavegâ, Bhuvanapâlâ, Madanâturâ, Anangâ, Anangamathanâ, Anangamekhalâ, Anangakusumâ, Visvarûpâ, Surâdikâ, Ksayamkarî, Aksyobhyâ, Satyavâdinî, Bahurûpâ, S’uchivratâ, Udârâ and Vâgis’î. These are the sixty four Kalâs. All of them have got luminous faces and long lolling tongues. Fire is always coming out from the faces of all of them. The eyes of all of them are red with anger. They are uttering :-- We will drink all the water and thus dry up the oceans; we will annihilate fire, we will stop the flow of air and control it. Today we will devour the whole universe and so forth. All of them have got bows and arrows in their hands; all are eager to fight. The four quarters are being reverberated with the clashing of their teeth. The hairs on their heads are all tawny and they stand upwards. Each of them has one hundred Aksauhinî forces under them. O King! What more to say than this that each of them has got power to destroy one lakh Brahmândas; and their one hundred Aksauhinî forces also can do the same. There is nothing that is not impracticable with them. What they cannot do cannot be conceived by mind nor can be uttered in speech. All the war materials exist within their enclosures. Chariots, horses, elephants, weapons, and forces all are unlimited. All the war materials are ready at all times and in abundance. Next comes the eleventh enclosure wall built of Gomedamani. It is ten Yojanas high. Its colour is like the newly blown Javâ flower. All the ground, trees, tanks, houses, pillars, birds and all other things are all red and built of Gomedamani. Here dwell the thirty-two Mahâ S’aktis adorned with various ornament made of Gomedamani and furnished with various weapons. They are always eager to fight. Their eyes are always red with anger; their bees are like Pis’âchas and their hands are like chakras (discs). “Pierce him,” “Beat him,” “Cut him,” “Tear him asunder,” “Burn him down,” are the words constantly uttered by them. The inhabitants of the place always worship them. Each of them has ten Aksauhinî forces. These are inordinately powerful. It is impossible to describe that. It seems that each S’akti can easily destroy one lakh Brahmândas. Innumerable chariots, elephants, hordes, etc., and other vâhanas are here. Verily all the war materials of the Devî Bhagavatî are seen in this Gomedamani enclosure.

31-51. Now I am mentioning the auspicious, sin destroying names of these S’aktis :--Vidyâ, Hrî, Pusti, Prajñâ, Sinî vâlî, Kuhû, Rudrâ, Viryâ, Prabhâ, Nandâ, Posanî, Riddhidâ, S’ubhâ, Kâlarâtri, Mahârâtri, Bhadra KâIî, Kaparddinî, Vikriti, Dandi, Mundinî, Sendukhandâ, S’ikhandinî, Nis’umbha s’umbha mathanî, Mahisâsura marddinî, Indrânî, Rudrânî, S’ankarârdha sarîrinî, Nârî, Nirâyanî Tris’ûlinî, Pâlinî, Ambikâ, and Hlâdinî. (See the Daksinâ Mûrti Samhitâ and other Tantras.) Never there is any chance that they will be defeated anywhere. Hence if all those S’aktis get angry at any time, this Brahmânda ceases to exist. Next to this Gomeda enclosure comes the enclosure made of diamonds. It is ten yojanas high; on all sides there are the entrance gates; the doors are hinged there with nice mechanisms. Nice new diamond trees exist here. All the roads, royal roads, trees, and the spaces for watering their roots, tanks, wells, reservoirs, Sâranga and other musical instruments are all made of diamonds. Here dwells S’rî Bhuvanes’varî Devî with Her attendants. O King! Each of them has a lakh attendants. All of them are proud of their beauty. Some of them are holding fans in their hands; some are holding cups for drinking water; some, betelnuts; some are holding umbrellas; some chowries; some are holding various clothings; some flowers; some, looking glasses; some, saffrons; some collyrium, whereas some others are holding Sindûra (red lead). Some are ready to do the painting works; some are anxious to champoo the feet; some are eager to make Her wear ornaments; some are anxious to put garlands of flowers on Her neck. All of them are skilled in various arts of enjoyments and they are all young. To gain the Grace of the Devî, they consider the whole universe as trifling. Now I shall mention to you the names of the attendants of the Devî, proud of their possessing lots of amorous gestures and postures. Listen. They are :-- Anangarûpâ, Anangamadanâ, Madanâturâ, Bhuvanavegâ, Bhuvanapâlikâ, Sarvas’is’ira, Anangavedanâ, Anangamekhalâ, these are the Eight Sakhîs. Each of them is as fair as Vidyullatâ. Each is adorned with various ornaments and skilled in all actions. When they walk to and fro with canes and rods in their hands in the service of the Devî, they look as if the lightning flashes glimmer on all sides.

52-71 On the outer portion of the enclosure wall, on the eight sides are situated the dwelling houses of these eight Sakhîs and they are always full of various vâhanas and weapons. Next to this enclosure of diamond comes the thirteenth enclosure wall made of Vaidûrya mani. Its height is ten yojanas. There are entrance gates and doorways on the four sides. The court inside, the houses, the big roads, wells, tanks, ponds, rivers and even the sands are all made of Vaidûrya mani. On the eight sides reside the eight Mâtrikâs Brâhmî, etc., with their hosts. These Mâtrikâs represent the sum-total of the individual Mâtrikâs in every Brahmânda. Now hear their names :-- (1) Brâhmî, (2) Mâhes’varî, (3) Kaumârî, (4) Vaisnavî, (5) Vârâhî,

(6) Indrânî, (7) Châmundâ, and (8) Mahâ Laksmî. Their forms are like those of Brahmâ and Rudra and others. They are always engaged in doing good to the Universe and reside here with their own Vâhanas and weapons.

At the four gates, the various Vâhanas of Bhagavatî remain always fully equipped. Somewhere there are Kotis and Kotis of elephants. At some places there are Kotis and Kotis of horses; at others there are camps, houses, at others there are swans, lions; at others there are Garudas; at other places there are peacocks, bulls and various other beings all fully equipped and arranged in due order. Similarly the above mentioned animals are yoked to Kotis and Kotis of chariots; there are coachmen (syces); at some places flags are fluttering high on them so as to reach the heavens and thus they are adding beauty. At other places the aerial cars are arranged in rows, countless, with various sounding instruments in them, with flags soaring high in the Heavens and endowed with various ensigns and emblems. O King! Next to this Vaidûrya enclosure, comes the fourteenth enclosure wall built of Indranîlamani; its height is ten Yojanas. The court inside, houses, roads, wells, tanks and reservoirs, etc., all are built of Indranîlamani. There is here a lotus consisting of sixteen petals extending to many Yojanas in width and shining like a second Sudars’ana Chakra. On these sixteen petals reside the sixteen S’aktis of Bhagavatî, with their hosts. Now I am mentioning the names of these. Hear :-- Karâlî, Vikârâlî, Umâ, Sarasvatî, S’rî, Durgâ, Ûsâ, Laksmî, S’ruti, Smriti, Dhriti, S’raddhâ, Medhâ, Mati, Kânti, and Âryâ. These are the 16 S’aktis. They all are dark blue, of the colour of the fresh rain-cloud; they wield in their hands axes and shields. It seems they are ever eager to fight. O King! These S’aktis are the Rulers of all the separate S’aktis of the other Brahmândas. These are the forces of S’rî Devî.

72-90. Being strengthened by the Devî’s strength, these are always surrounded by various chariots and forces, various other S’aktis follow them. If they like, they can cause great agitation in the whole universe. Had I thousand faces, I would not have been able to describe what an amount of strength they wield. Now I describe the fifteenth enclosure wall. Listen. Next to this Indranîlamani enclosure, comes the enclosure made of pearls (muktâ), very wide and ten Yojanas high. The court inside, its space, trees, all are built of pearls. Within this enclosure there is a lotus with eight petals, all of pearls. On these petals reside the eight S’aktis, the advisers and ministers of the Devî. Their appearances, weapons, dresses, enjoyments, everything is like those of S’rî Devî. Their duty is to inform the Devî of what is going on in the Brahmândas. They are skilled in all sciences and arts and clever in all actions. They are very clever, skillful and clever in knowing beforehand the desires and intentions of S’rî Devî and they perform those things accordingly. Each one of them has many other S’aktis who also live here. By their Jñâna S’akti they know all the news concerning the Jîvas in every Brahmânda. Now I mention the names of those eight Sakhîs. Listen. Anangakusumâ, Anangakusumâ-turâ, Anangamadanâ, Ananga madanâturâ, Bhuvanapâla, Gaganavegâ, S’as’irekhâ, and Gaganarekhâ. These are the eight Sakhîs. They look red like the Rising Sun; and in their four hands they hold noose, goad, and signs of granting boons and “no fear.” At every instant they inform S’rî Devî of all the events of the Brahmânda. Next to this comes the sixteenth enclosure wall made of emerald (marakata); it is ten Yojanas high; the court inside, its space, and houses and everything are built of emeralds (marakata mani). Here exist all the good objects of enjoyments. This is hexagonal, of the Yantra shape. And at every corner reside the Devas. On the eastern corner resides the four-faced Brahmâ; he lives with Gâyatrî Devî; he holds Kamandalu, rosary, signs indicating “no fear” and Danda (rod). The Devî Gâyatrî is also decorated with these. Here all the Vedas, Smritis, the Purânas, and various weapons exist incarnate in their respective forms. All the Avatâras of Brahmâ, Gâyatrî, and Vyâhritis that exist in this Brahmânda, all live here. On the south-west corner Mahâ Visnu lives with Sâvitrî; He holds conch shell, disc, club, and lotus. Sâvitrî has got also all these. The Avatâras of Visnu that exist in every Brahmânda Matsya, Kûrma, etc., and all the Avatâras of Sâvitrî that exist in every universe, all dwell in this place. On the north western corner exists Mahâ Rudra with Sarasvatî. Both of them hold in their hands Paras’u, rosary, signs granting boons and “no fear.”

91-110. All the Avatâras of Rudra and Pârvatî (Gaurî, etc.) facing south that exist in all the Brahmândas, dwell here. All the chief Âgamas, sixty four in number and all the other Tantras reside here, incarnate in their due forms. On the south-eastern corner, the Lord of wealth, Kuvera, of Bhagavatî, surrounded by roads and shops resides here with Mahâ Laksmî and his hosts holding the jar of jewels (Mani Karandikâ). On the western corner exists always Madana with Rati, holding noose, goad, bow and arrow. All his amorous attendants reside here, incarnate in their forms. On the north-eastern corner resides always the great hero Ganes’a, the Remover of obstacles, holding noose and goad and with his Pusti Devî. O King! All the Vibhûtis (manifestations) of Ganes’a that exist in all the universes reside here. What more to say than this, that Brahmâ and the other Devas and Devîs here represent the sum-total of all the Brahmâs and the Devas and the Devîs that exist in all the Brahmândas. These all worship S’rî Bhagavatî, remaining in their own spheres respectively. O King! Next come the seventeenth enclosure wall made of Prabâla. It is red like saffron and it is one hundred Yojanas high. As before, the court inside, the ground and the houses all are made of Prabâla. The goddesses of the five elements, Hrillekhâ, Gaganâ, Raktâ, Karâlikâ, and Mahochchhusmâ reside here. The colours and lustres of the bodies of the goddessses resemble those of the elements over which they preside respectively. All of them are proud of their youth and hold in their four hands noose, goad and signs granting boons and “no fear.” They are dressed like S’rî Devî and reside here always. Next to this comes the eighteenth enclosure wall built of Navaratna (the nine jewels). It is many yojanas wide. This enclosure wall is superior to all others and it is higher also. On the four sides there exist innumerable houses, tanks, reservoirs, all built of Navaratna; these belong to the Devîs, the presiding Deities of Âmnâyas (that which is to be studied or learnt by heart; the Vedas). The ten Mahâ Vidyâs, Kâlî, Târâ, etc., of S’rî Devî and the Mahâbhedâs, that is, their all the Avatâras all dwell here with their respective Âvaranas, Vâhanas and ornaments. All the Avatâras of S’rî Devî for the killing of the Daityas and for showing favour to the devotees live here. They are Pas’amkus’es’varî, Bhuvanes’varî, Bhairavî, Kapâla Bhuvanes’varî, Amkus’a Bhuvanes’varî, Pramâda bhuvanes’varî, S’rî Krodha Bhuvanes’varî, Triputâs’vârûdhâ, Nityaklinnâ, Annapurnâ, Tvaritâ, and the other avatâras of Bhuvanes’varî, and Kâlî, Târâ and the other Mahâvidyâs are known as Mahâvidyâs. They live here with their Âvarana Devatâs, Vâhanas, and ornaments respectively. (Note :-- The Âvarana Deities are the attendant Deities.) Here live also the seven Kotis of Devîs presiding over the Mahâ Mantras, all brilliant and fair like the Koti Suns. O King! Next to this enclosure wall comes the chief and crowning palace of S’rî Devî, built of Chintâmani gems. All the articles within this are built of Chintâmani gems. Within this palace are seen hundreds and thousands of pillars. Some of these pillars are built of Sûryakântamani, some are built of Chandrakânta mani, and some are built of Vidyutkânta mani. O King! The lustre and brilliance of these pillars is so strong that no articles within this palace are visible to the eye. (Note :-- The face of the Goddess Kâlî is so bright that it appears like a shadow, i.e., black.)

Here ends the Eleventh Chapter on the description of the enclosure walls built of Padmarâga mani, etc., of the Mani Dvîpa in the Mahâpurânam S’rî Mad Devî Bhâgavatam of 18,000 verses by Maharsi Veda Vyâsa.

Chapter XII

On the description of Mani Dvîpa

1-17. Vyâsa said :-- O King Janamejaya! The Ratnagriha, above mentioned, is the Central, the Chief and the Crowning Place of Mûla Prakriti. [The nine jewels are :-- (1) Muktâ, (2) Mânikya, (3) Vaidûrya, (4) Gomeda, (5) Vajra, (6) Vidruma, (7) Padmarâga, (8) Marakata, and (9) Nîla.] This is situated in the centre of all the enclosures. Within this there are the four Mandapas, i.e., halls built of one thousand (i. e., innumerable) pillars. These are the S’ringâra Mandapa, Mukti Mandapa, Jñâna Mandapa and Ekânta Mandapa; on the top there are canopies of various colours; within are many scented articles scented by the Dhûpas, etc. The brilliance of each of these is like that of one Koti Suns. On all sides of these four Mandapas there are nice groups of gardens of Kas’mîra, Mallikâ, and Kunda flowers. Various scents, and scented articles, for example, of musk, etc., are fully arranged in due order. There is a very big lotus tank here; the steps leading to it are built of jewels. Its water is nectar, on it are innumerable full-blown lotuses and the bees are humming always over them. Many birds, swans, Kârandavas, etc., are swimming to and fro. The sweet scents of lotuses are playing all round. In fact, the whole Manidvîpa is perfumed with various scented things. Within the S’ringâra Mandapa, the Devî Bhagavatî is situated in the centre on an Âsana (seat) and She hears the songs sung in tune by the other Devîs along with the other Devas. Similarly sitting on the Mukti Mandapa, She frees the Jîvas from the bondages of the world. Sitting on the Jñâna Mandapa, She gives instructions on Jñâna, and sitting on the fourth Ekânta Mandapa, She consults with Her ministers, the Sakhîs, Ananga Kusuma, etc., on the creation, preservation, etc., of the universe. O King! Now I shall describe about the main, Khâs, room of S’rî Devî. Listen. The Khâs Mahâl palace of the Devî Bhagavatî is named S’rî Chintâmani Griha. Within this is placed the raised platform, the dais and sofa whereon the Devî taketh Her honourable seat. The ten S’akti-tattvas form the staircases. The four legs are (1) Brahmâ, (2) Visnu, (3) Rudra, and (4) Mahes’vara. Sadâs’iva forms the upper covering plank. Over this S’rî Bhuvanes’vara Mahâ Deva or the Supreme Architect of the Universe is reigning. Now hear something about this Bhuvanes’vara. Before creation while intending to sport, the Devî Bhagavatî divided Her Body into two parts and from the right part created Bhuvanes’vara. He has five faces and each face has three eyes. He has four hands and He is holding in each hand speer, signs indicating do not fear, axe, and signs granting boons. He looks sixteen years old. The lustre of of His Body is more beautiful then Koti Kandarpas and more fiery than thousand Suns; and at the same time cool like Koti Suns. His colour is crystal white, and on His left lap S’rî Bhuvanes’varî Devî is always sitting.

18-29. On the hip of S’rî Bhuvanes’varî, is shining the girdle with small tinkling bells, built of various jewels; the ornaments on the arms are made of burnished gold studded with Vaidûryamanis; the Tâtanka ornaments on Her ears are very beautiful like S’rîchakra and they enhance very much the beauty of Her lotus face. The beauty of Her forehead vies with, or defies the Moon of the eighth bright lunar day. Her lips challenge the fully ripened Bimba fruits. Her face is shining with the Tilaka mark made of musk and saffron. The divine crown on Her head is beautified with the Sun and Moon made of jewels; the nose ornaments are like the star Venus and built of transparent gems, looking exceedingly beautiful and shedding charming lustre all around. The neck is decorated with necklaces built of gems and jewels. Her breasts are nicely decorated with camphor and saffron. Her neck is shining like a conchshell decorated with artistic designs. Her teeth look like fully ripe pomegranate fruits. On Her head is shining the jewel crown. Her lotus face is beautified with alakâ as if these are mad bees. Her navel is beautiful like the whirls in the river Bhâgirathî; Her fingers are decorated with jewel rings; She has three eyes like lotus leaves; the lustre of Her body is bright like Padmarâgamani cut and carved and sharpened on stone. The bracelets are adorned with jewel tinkling bells; Her neck ornaments and medals are studded with gems and jewels. Her hands are resplendent with the lustre of the jewels on the fingers; the braid of hair on Her head is wreathed with a garland of Mallikâ flowers; Her bodice (short jacket) is studded with various jewels.

30-45. O King! S’rî Devî is slightly bent down with the weight of Her very high hard breasts. She has four hands and She is holding noose, goad and signs granting boons and “do not fear.” The all beautiful all merciful Devî is full of love gestures and beauties. Her voice is sweeter than that of lute; the lustre of Her body is like Kotis and Kotis of Suns and Moons if they rise simultaneously on the sky. The Sakhîs, attendants, the Devas and the Devîs surround Her on all sides. Ichchâ S’akti, Jñâna S’akti, and Kriya S’akti all are present always before the Devî. Lajjâ, Tusti, Pusti, Kîrti, Kânti, Ksamâ, Dayâ, Buddhi, Medhâ, Smriti, and Laksmî are always seen here incarnate in their due Forms. The nine Pîtha S’aktis, Jayâ, Vijayâ, Ajitâ, Aparâjitâ, Nityâ, Vilâsinî, Dogdhrî, Aghorâ, and Mangalâ reside here always and are in the service of the Devî Bhuvanes’varî. On the side of the Devî are the two oceans of treasures; from these streams of Navaratna, gold, and seven Dhâtus (elements) go out and assume the forms of rivers and fall into the ocean Sudhâ Sindhu. Because such a Devî Bhuvanes’varî, resplendent with all powers and prosperities, sits on the left lap of Bhuvanes’vara, that He has, no doubt acquired His omnipotence. O King! Now I will describe the dimensions of the Chintâmani Griha. Listen. It is one thousand Yojanas wide; its centre is very big; therooms situated further and further are twice those preceding them. It lies in Antarîksa (the intervening space) without any support. At the times of dissolution and creation itcontracts and expands like a cloth. The lustre of this Chintâmani Griha is comparatively far more bright and beautiful than that of other enclosure walls. S’rî Devî Bhagavatî dwells always in this place. O King! All the great Bhaktas of the Devî in every Brahmânda, in the Devaloka, in Nâgaloka, in the world of men or in any other loka, all those that were engaged in the meditation of the Devî in the sacred places of the Devî and died there, they all come here and reside with the Devî in great joy and festivity.

46-59. On all sides rivers are flowing; some of ghee, some of milk, curd, honey, nectar, pomegranate juice, jambu juice, and some of mango juice, sugarcane juices are flowing on all sides. The trees here yield fruits according to one’s desires and the wells and tanks yield water also as people desire. Never is there any want felt here of anything. Never are seen here diseases, sorrow, old age, decrepitude, anxiety, anger, jealousy, and envy and other lower ideas. All the inhabitants of this place are full of youth and look like one thousand Suns. All enjoy with their wives and they worship S’rî Bhuvanes’varî. Some have attained Sâlokya, some Sâmîpya, some Sârûpya and some have attained Sârsti and pass their days in highest comfort. The Devas that are in every Brahmânda all live here and worship S’rî Devî. The seven Koti Mahâ Mantras and Mahâ Vidyâs here assume forms and worship the Mahâ Mâyâ S’rî Bhagavatî, Who is of the nature of Brahmâ. O King! Thus I have described to you all about this Manidvîpa. The lustre of Sun, Moon and Kotis and Kotis of lightnings cannot be one Kotieth of one Koti part of Its lustre. At some places the lustre is like Vidrumamani; some places as are illumined like the lustre of Marakata Mani; some, like Sûrya Kânta mani and some places are rendered brilliant like Kotis and Kotis of lightnings. The light at some places is like Sindûra; at some places like Indranîlamani; at some places, like Mânikya, and at some places like diamond. Some places are blazing like the conflagration of fire; and some places look like molten gold; some places seem filled with the lustre of Chandrakântamani, and some places look brilliant like Sûryakântamani.

60-73. The mountains here are all built of gems and jewels; the entrance gates and enclosures are built of gems and jewels; the trees and their leaves all are of gems; in fact all that exist here are all of gems and jewels. At some places numbers of peacocks are dancing; at some places cuckoos are captivating the minds of persons by cooing in the fifth tune and at others doves and pigeons and parrots are making sweet cackling sounds. Lakhs and lakhs of tanks are there with their pure crystal-like waters. The Red lotuses have blown fully and enhanced the beauty of the place. The captivating scents of these lotuses extend to a distance one hundred Yojanas all round and gladden the minds of people. The leaves are rustling with gentle breeze. The whole sky overhead is radiant with the lustre of Chintâmani gems and jewels. All the sides are illuminated with the brilliancy of the gems and jewels. O King! These jewels act like lamps. And the sweet scented trees emit their flagrance and it is transmitted by breeze all around. Thus these trees serve the purpose of dhûp (scent). The rays of these gems pierce through the openings of the jewel screens on the houses and fall on the mirrors inside, thus causing a nice brilliant appearance that captivates the mind and causes confusion. O King! And what shall I say of this place, more than this, that all the powers, and wealth, all the love sentiments, all the dress suited to amorous interviews, all the splendours, fire, energy, beauty and brilliance, the omniscience, the indomitable strength, all the excellent qualities and all mercy and kindness are present here! The All Comprehending Bliss and the Brahmânanda can always be witnessed here! O King! Thus I have described to you about the Manidvîpa, the most exalted place of the Devî Bhagavatî. At Her remembrance all the sins are instantly destroyed. The more so, if a man remembers the Devî and about this place at the time of death, He surely goes there. O King! He who daily reads the five Chapters, i.e., from the eighth to this twelfth chapter, is surely untouched by any obstacles due to the Bhûtas, Pretas and Pis’âchas. रत्नसानुशरासनं रजताद्रि शृङ्गनिकेतनं ।
शिञ्जिनी कृत पन्नगेश्वर मच्युतानल सायकम् ॥१॥

क्षिप्रदग्धपुर त्रयं त्रिदशालयैरभि वन्दितम् ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥२॥

सुमेरु पर्वत की चोटी पर हीरे जवाहरातों से जुड़े हुए वाणों के आसन पर विराजमान, सर्पराज (वासुकी नाग) की डोरी बाला भगवान विष्णु का अग्निवाण धारण किये हुए, त्रिपुरासुर राक्षस की नगरी को शीघ्र ही जला देने वाले, जो देवताओं से वन्दित हैं, ऐसे चन्द्रशेखर भगवान की शरण प्राप्त मेरा यमराज क्या कर सकता है? यानी मार नहीं सकता।

पञ्चपाद पुष्प गन्धि पदाम्बुज द्वय शोभितं ।
भाल लोचन जात हाटक दग्ध मन्मथ विग्रहम् ॥३॥

भस्म दिग्ध कलेवरं भवनाशिनं भवमव्ययम्।
चन्द्र शेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥४॥

देनों चरण कमल सुगन्धित कमल से सुशोभित, सोने के समान कपाल में नेत्र वाले सम्पूर्ण शरीर में भस्म लगाये, कामदेव के शरीर को जला देने वाले, जो संसार के नाशक व पालक हैं, ऐसे भगवान चन्द्रशेखर (शिवजी) का आश्रय प्राप्त मेरा यमराज क्या बिगाड़ लेगा?

मत्तवारण मुख्य चर्मकृतोत्तरीयमनोहरं ।
पङ्कजासनपद्म लोचन पूजिताङ्घ्रिसरोरूहम् ॥५॥

देवसिद्धितरङ्गिणी कर सित्तशीत जटाधरं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥६॥

उन्मत्त गजराज का चर्म जिनका व व चादर है, जो कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं, कमल नेत्र, सुंदर कमलों से पूजित, देवगंगा के जलकणों से सिक्त, शीतल, जटाधारी भगवान चन्द्रशेखर का आश्रय प्राप्त मेरा यमराज क्या कर लेगा?

कुण्डलीकृत कुण्डलीश्वर कुण्डल वृष वाहनं ।
नारदादि मुनीश्वरस्तुत वैभवं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥७॥

अन्धकान्तकमाश्रितामर पादपं शमनान्तकं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम् कि करिष्यति वै यम: ॥८॥

कुंडली मारे सर्पराज का कुण्डल कान में पहने हुए, बैल की सवारी वाले, नारद आदि श्रेष्ठ मुनियों से वन्दित ऐश्वर्य स्वरूप चौदहों भुवन के स्वामी, अन्धकासुर को मारने वाले, देवता जिनके चरणों के आश्रित हैं, उस शमन का अन्त करने वाले, चन्द्रशेखर के आश्रय प्राप्त मेरा यमराज कुछ भी नहीं कर सकता।

यक्षराज सखं भगाक्षिहरं भुजङ्ग विभूषणं ।
शैलराज सुता परिष्कृत चारुवाम कलेवरम ॥९॥

क्ष्वेडनील गलं परश्वधारिणं मृग धारिणं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥१०॥

कुबेर के मित्र, चन्द्र नेत्रहारी, सर्प आभूषण वाले, पार्वती (परिष्कृत व सुन्दर रूप) जिनकी पत्नी हंै, विष से जिनका गला नीला है, जो परशु और मृग धारण करने वाले चन्द्रशेखर का आश्रय प्राप्त मेरा यमराज कुछ नहीं कर सकता।

भेषजं भवरोगिणाम्खिलाऽपदामपहारिणं ।
दक्ष यज्ञ विनाशिनं त्रिगुणात्मकं त्रिविलोचनम् ॥११॥

भुक्ति मुक्ति फल प्रदं निखिलाय संघनिबर्हणं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥१२॥

दक्ष प्रजापति के यज्ञ के नाशक, सत्व-रज-तम तीनों गुणों से युक्ताभिनेय भोग और मोक्ष फल देने वाले, समस्त संघों का निर्वाह करने वाले चन्द्रशेखर का आश्रय प्राप्त मेरा यमराज कुछ भी नहीं कर सकता।

भक्तवत्सलमर्चता निधिमक्षयं हरिदंबरं ।
सर्वभूतपति परात्परमप्रमेयमनूपमम् ॥१३॥

भूमि वारिनभो हुताशन सोम पालितआकृतिं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥१४॥

भक्तवत्सल, पूजित होने वाले अक्षयनिधि, हरित व धारण करने वाले, सब प्राणियों के स्वामी, परात्पर ब्रह्म, उपमारहित, पृथ्वी-जल-आकाश-अग्नि व चन्द्र से पालित आकृति वाले चन्द्रशेखर के आश्रित मेरा यमराज कुछ नहीं कर सकता है।

विश्व सृष्टि विधायिनं पुनरेव पालन तत्परं ।
संहरन्तमथ प्रपञ्च सशेष लोकनिवासिनम् ॥१५॥

क्रीडयन्त महर्निशं गणनाथ यूथ समावृतं ।
चन्द्रशेखरमाश्रये मम किं करिष्यति वै यम: ॥१६॥

संसार के सृष्टि कर्ता, पुन: उसके पालन में तत्पर, सांसारिक प्रपंच (माया जाल) के हरण कर्ता, सब लोकों (भुवनों) के निवास स्थान, गणपति आदि समस्त यूथो से घिरे हुए, रात-दिन क्रीड़ा करने वाले, चन्द्रशेखर के आश्रित मेरा यमराज कुछ नहीं कर सकता।

रुद्रं पशुपतिं स्थाणुं नील कण्ठमुमापतिम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु करिष्यति ॥१७॥

रुद्र, पशुपति, स्थाणु, नीलकण्ठ, उमापति को मैं शिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा क्या कर लेगा?

कालकष्ट कलामूर्तिं कालाग्नि काल नाशनम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु: करिष्यति ॥१८॥

काल (मृत्यु) जैसे कष्ट का नाश करने वाले, कलाओं की मूर्ति, कालाग्नि (दुष्टों को अग्नि के समान जलाने वाले), मृत्यु का भी नाश करने वाले को मैं शिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा कुछ भी नहीं करेगी।

नील कण्ठं विरुपाक्षं निर्मलं निरूपद्रवम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु: करिष्यति ॥१९॥

नीले कण्ठ वाले, त्रिनेत्र, स्वच्छ हृदय वाले, उपद्रवों से रहित देव शिव को मैं सिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा कुछ भी नहीं करेगी।

वामदेवं महादेवं लोकनाथं जगद्गुरुम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु: करिष्यति ॥२०॥

वामदेव, महादेव, लोकों के स्वामी, विश्व के गुरु शिव को मैं सिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा क्या करेगी/?

देवदेवं जगन्नाथं देवेशवृषभध्वजम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु: करिष्यति ॥२१॥

देवों के भी देव, जगन्नाथ (संसार के स्वामी), देवों के स्वामी, जिनके ध्वजा में वृषभ का चिह्न है, उन शिवजी को मैं शिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा क्या करेगी?

अनन्तमव्ययं शान्तमक्षमालाधरं हरम्।

आनन्दे परमं नित्यं कैवल्यप्रद कारणम् ।
नमामि शिरसा देवं किं नो मृत्यु: करिष्यति ॥२३॥

नित्य आनन्द स्वरूप, उत्कृष्ट, शाश्वत, मोक्ष के कारण शिव को मैं सिर झुकाकर नमस्कार करता हूं। मृत्यु मेरा क्या करेगी?

स्वर्गांपवर्गदातारं सृष्टिस्थित्यंत कारिणम ।

कुमारी कालि कापालि, कपिले कृष्ण-पिंगले ॥१॥

I bow to you, O foremost of Siddhas, O Noble One that dwells in the forest of Mandara, O Virgin, O Kali! O wife of Kapala! O you of a black and tawny hue.

भद्र-कालि! नमस्तुभ्यं, महाकालि नमोऽस्तुते।
चण्डि चण्डे नमस्तुभ्यं, तारिणि वर-वर्णिनि ॥२॥

I bow to you. O Beneficent Kali, I bow to you, O Maha-kali, O wrathful One.
I bow to you. O Tara the saviour, the great boon bestowing one.

कात्यायनि महा-भागे, करालि विजये जये ।
शिखि पिच्छ-ध्वज-धरे, नानाभरण-भूषिते ॥3॥

O Durga! Great Being, the fierce bestower of victory! O personification of Victory! O you that bears a banner of peacock plumes, O one decked with every ornament.

अटूट-शूल-प्रहरणे, खड्ग-खेटक-धारिणे ।
गोपेन्द्रस्यानुजे ज्येष्ठे, नन्द-गोप-कुलोद्भवे ॥४॥

O you that wields an awful spear, the holder of sword and shield,
O you that were born as the younger sister of the chief ofcow-herds (Lord Krsna), O eldest sibling, born in the family of the cowherd Nanda!

महिषासृक्-प्रिये नित्यं, कौशिकि पीत-वासिनि ।
अट्टहासे कोक-मुखे, नमस्तेऽस्तु रण-प्रिये ॥५॥

O you who are always fond of buffalo's blood, born of Kusika's clan,
dressed in yellow robes, having assuming the face of a wolf you
devoured the Asuras! I bow to you who are fond of battle!

उमे शाकम्भरि श्वेते, कृष्णे कैटभ-नाशिनि ।
हिरण्याक्षि विरूपाक्षि, सुधू्राप्ति नमोऽस्तु ते ॥६॥

O Uma! O Sakambhari! O you that are white in hue, and also black!
O slayer of the Asura Kaitabha! O yellow-eyed one! O you that see everything! O you of eyes that have the colour of smoke, I bow to you!

वेद-श्रुति-महा-पुण्ये, ब्रह्मण्ये जात-वेदसि ।
जम्बू-कटक-चैत्येषु, नित्यं सन्निहितालये ॥७॥

You are the Vedas, the Srutis, and the greatest virtue! You are propitious to Brahmanas engaged in sacrifice. You are all knowing, you are ever present in the sacred abodes erected to you in cities of Jamvudwipa, I bow to you!

त्वं ब्रह्म-विद्यानां, महा-निद्रा च देहिनाम् ।
स्कन्ध-मातर्भगवति, दुर्गे कान्तार-वासिनि॥८॥

You are the Knowledge-of-the-highest-truth among sciences, and you are that sleep of creatures from which there is no waking. O mother of Skanda (Lord Muruga), possessor of the six (highest) attributes of Divinity, O Durga, that dwells in the most inaccessible regions.

स्वाहाकारः स्वधा चैव, कला काष्ठा सरस्वती ।
सावित्री वेद-माता च, तथा वेदान्त उच्यते ॥९॥

You are called Swaha, and Swadha, and the subtle divisions of time such as Kala, and Kashta. You are the goddess of knowledge: Saraswati, and the mother of the Vedas, and the personification of Vedanta.

स्तुतासि त्वं महा-देवि विशुद्धेनान्तरात्मा ।
जयो भवतु मे नित्यं, त्वत्-प्रसादाद् रणाजिरे ॥१०॥

With inner mind purified, I praise you, O great goddess; let victory
always attend me through your grace, on the field of battle.

कान्तार-भय-दुर्गेषु, भक्तानां चालयेषु च ।
नित्यं वससि पाताले, युद्धे जयसि दानवान् ॥११॥

In inaccessible regions, where there is fear, in places of difficulty, in the abodes of your worshippers and in the nether regions (Patala), you always dwell. And in battle you always defeat the Danavas (a demon race).

त्वं जम्भिनी मोहिनी च, माया ह्रीः श्रीस्तथैव च ।
सन्ध्या प्रभावती चैव, सावित्री जननी तथा ॥१२॥

You are the unconsciousness, the sleep, the illusion, the modesty, the beauty of all creatures. You are the twilight, and the radiant light of day! You are Savitri, and you are the mother of all creation.

तुष्टिः पुष्टिर्धृतिदीप्तिश्चन्द्रादित्य-विवर्धनी ।
भूतिर्भूति-मतां संख्ये, वीक्ष्यसे सिद्ध-चारणैः ॥१३॥

You are contentment, development, fortitude and light. You increase the radiance of the Sun and the Moon. You are the prosperity of those that prosper. The Siddhas and the Charanas behold you in deep contemplation!

नमामि कृष्णरूपिणीं कृष्णाङ्गयष्टि धारिणीम् । समग्र तत्वसागर भपारगह्वराम ॥

I pay my devotion to Goddess Kali who is the reflection of Krishna. She is the mail element of Mahasagar. Nobody can easily gather. But the worshipers can reach to her easily as she is the mother of her devotees, can a mother remain away from her sons? Nobody will find out the reasons.

शिवा प्रभां समुज्जवलां स्फुरच्छशांक शेखरां । ललाटरत्न भास्करां जगत्प्रदीप्ति भास्कराम् ॥

She is Kalyan Swaroopi. Has a moon light on her forehead. She enlighters everybody’s mind. Forehead. She is equivalent to Lord Surya which enlightens the world.

महेन्द्र कश्यपर्चितां सनत्कुमात संस्तुतां । सुरासुरेन्द्र वंदितो यथार्थ निर्मलादभुतां ॥

Mahendra and Kashyap prayed to her several times. Sants have preached her day and night. Devtas as well as Daano’s (Public) also worship her. She is distinctive and uncommon.

अतर्क्यरोचिरूर्जितां विकारदोष वर्जितां । मुमुक्षुभिर्विचिन्तितां विशेषतत्व सूचितां ॥

Nobody can understand her. She is like a jyoti ( a ray of light). She is the one to provide name and fame, Mokhsha. She is the element of knowledge and can be recognised as so.

मृतास्थिनिर्मित स्त्रजां मृगेन्द्र वाहनाग्रजाम् । सुशुद्ध तत्वतोष्णां त्रिवेद परभूषणां ॥

The mala which the Devi wears or possesses is created with the bones of dead bodies. She travels on Mrugraaj Singh. She was born the first. She constitutes all the 3 Vedas.

भुजंग हार हारिणी कपालखंड घारिणीम् । सुधार्मि कोप कारणीं सुरेन्द्र वैरधातिनीम् ॥

She is the one to possess a necklace of snakes, holding a Kapaalkhand in her hand. Blesses her devotees and religious people. She always does good to people. She appears to be very beautiful when she wears Kapaal Mala.

कुठारपाशचापिनीं कृतान्त काममोदिनीं । शुभां कपाल मालिनीं सुवर्णकन्याशाखिनीं ॥

She possess the Kudhar Paal (Dhanush). She is the one to describe and give death. She always helps in the progess of the world.

श्मशान भूमि वासिनीं द्निजेन्द्रमौलिभाविनीम् । तमोsन्धकार यामिनीं शिवस्वभाव कामिनीम् ॥

She resides on Samshaan Bhumi (cremation ground). Is preached by all the brahmans. Is like the darkness of night. She always helps in the progress.

सहस्त्र सूर्य्यराजिकां धनञ्जयोर्ग्रकारिकाम् । सुशुद्ध काल कंदलां सुभृंगवृन्दमन्जुलाम् ॥

She possess the power and light of a thousand Surya ( Sun). Is the main content of the world. She is aas beautiful as the colours of rainbow.

प्रजायिनीम प्रजावतीं नमामि मातरम् सतीम् । स्वकर्म कारिणे गतिं हरि प्रियाञ्च पार्वतीम् ॥

Is the one to create the Praja (public) and caretaker also. I pay my regards to such a devi. She is the icon of speed because of her bravery. She is as pure as powerful as the wife or Lord Shiva Shankar. It is said that such a friend of Goddess Parvati and Goddess Lakshmi.

अनंतशक्तिकान्तिदां यशोsर्थभुक्तिमुक्तिदाम् ।पुन: पुन्जगद्धितां नमाम्यहङ सुरार्चिताम् ॥

Hey Devi! She is the one to provide with innumerable powers to encourgare Kanti, provider of health and wealth. She also gives Bhog as well as Moksh. Always devotes herself in the progress and success of the world. Because of this she is regularly worshipped by the devtas. I pay my devotion to you.

जयेश्वरि त्रिलोचने प्रसीद देवी पाहिमाम् । जयन्ति ते स्तुवन्ति ये शुभं लभन्त्यमोक्षत: ॥

Hey Goddess! I pay my devotion to you. Please shower me with your kindness. Protect me. One who worships you always achieves success. They also attain moksh from you.

सदैव त हतद्बिष: परं भवन्ति सज्जुष: । जरा: परे शिवधुना प्रसाधि मां करोमि किम् ॥

Many enemies and devils have been destroyed. They achieve name and fame in the world. O Goddess! Now help me in progressing. Mataji ! without you I cannot do anything.

अतीव मोहितात्मनो वृथा विचेष्टि तस्य मे । कुरू प्रसादितं मनो यथास्मि जन्म भंजन: ॥

Hey Mata! I am stuck up in a great greed. I am being unsuccessful. Bless me so that I can get rid of this life and birth as soon as possible.

तथा भवन्तु ताका यथैव घोषितालका: इमां स्तुतिं ममेरितां पठन्ति कालिसाधक: ॥

Your devotees should always be winner and declared happy as Dheer and Veer. The preacher and believers of Goddess Kalo will read and preach his stuti.

न ते पुन: सदुस्तरे पतन्ति मोहगह्वरे ॥

They will never fall in the pit of greed.

गुणातीत निर्द्वन्द्वबोधैकगम्या त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥१
Hey goddess Kali! Your starnge powers and strength cannot be compared to any. You are present in each one in your true form. You are away from the three Guna’s, achieved through specific knowledge and resides in the Brahma.

अगोत्रा कृतित्वादनैकान्तिकत्वा दलक्ष्यागमत्वाद शेषाकर त्वात् ।
प्रपंचालसत्वादना रम्भकत्वात् त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥२

You do not belong to any religion or community. You are in many forms. You are unstoppable and that is why nobody or nothing can with overcome your speed. You are not required in stage of the world. You are on the whole, the creator, caretaker and destroyer of the world.

यदा नैवघाता न विष्णुर्नरुद्रो न काली न वा पंचभूतानिनाशा ।
तदा कारणीभूत सत्वैक मूर्ति त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥३

When Lords Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Kaal, Panchabhoot and Dik were not there, you were the much before them serving their purpose. You are the only one in the Brahma with a distinctive power.

न मीमांसकानैव कालादितर्का न साँख्या न योगा न वेदान्त वेदा: ।
न देवा विदुस्ते निराकार भावं त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥४

You are indescribable. Kaal, Tark, Sankhya Yog, Vedant, Veda and Devtagon are unsuccessful in describing you.

न तो नामगोत्रे न ते जन्म मृत्यु न ते धाम चेष्टे न ते दुख सोख्ये ।
न ते मित्र शत्रु न ते बन्ध मोक्षौ त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥५

Hey Goddess! Neither you have a name, not any Gotra (caste), not birth, nor death. Neither you havea house nor a Ghaat ( Place). Neither you have any desire nor any sorrow. You do not have happiness. You neither have a friend not an enemy nor Moksha. I pay my devotion to you.

न बाला न च त्वं वयस्था न वृद्धा न च स्यदिषष्ठ पुमान्नैव च त्वम् ।
न व त्वं सुरो नासुरो नो नरो वा त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥६

Goddess! You are neither a child, nor an adult, not an old, not a young, not a female, not a male. Neither any devta, not an evil and you are not a human also. You are present in the Brahma itself.

जले शीतलत्वं शुचौदाहकत्व विधौ निर्मलत्वं रवौ तापकत्वम् ।
तवैवाम्बिके यस्म कस्यापि शक्ति त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा॥७

Hey Jagdambey! You are present in the purity of water, anger of fire, coolness of the moon and the heat of the sun. You are the power of all the objects.

पपौक्ष्वेडमुग्रे पुरा यन्महेश: पुन: संहरत्यन्त काले जगच्च ।
तवैव प्रसादान्त च स्वस्य शक्त्या त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥८

O Goddess! Once when Lord Mahadev drank poison and the works/tasks that we did for the progress of the world were done to make you happy. He did not do it for selfish reasons.

कराला कृतीन्यानानि भ्रयान्ती भजन्ती करास्त्रादि बाहुल्यमिथम् ।
जगत्पालनाया सुराणाम् बंधाय त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥ ९

O Devi! You always have weapons in your hands to kill the devils and negative forces and work as a caretaker. You are the destroyer of Rakshas ( Devil). You are present in the entire Brahma.

रूदन्ती शिवाभिर्वहन्ती कपालं जयन्ती सुरारीन बधन्ती प्रसन्ना।
नटन्ती पतन्ती चलंती हसंती त्वमेका परंबह्मरूपेण सिद्धा ॥१०

Hey Kalika! You are the one to talk to Shivmurti, possessor of Kapaal, destroyer of the enemies of Lords, always remain happy, dancing and smiling always. You are in the Brahma.

आपादापिवताधिकं धावसित्व श्रुतिभ्याम् विहिनामि शब्द श्रृणोसि ।
अनासापिजिध्रस्य नेत्रापि पश्य स्वजिह्वापि नानारसास्वाद विज्ञा ॥११

Hey Dayamayi! You do not have feet but still run much faster that air also. You are deaf, but still you can hear the prayers of your devotees. You cannot smell but still can smell the fragrance of objects. You are blind, but still keep an eye on all. You do not a tongue, but still can taste all types of food.

यथा भ्रामयित्वा मृद चक्र कुलाली बिद्यते शरावं घटं च ।
महामोह यंत्रेषु भूतान्य शेषान् तथा मानुषास्त्वं सृत्रस्यादि सर्गे ॥१२

यथा रंगरज्वर्कदृष्टिष्व कस्मान्नृणां रूपदर्वी कराम्बुभ्रम: स्यात् ।
जगत्यत्र तत्तन्मये तद्वदेव त्वमेकैव तत्तन्नितत्तौ समस्तम् ॥१३

Hey Sarva Vidyamayi ( creator of Knowledge)! The way the human body reflects silver. Rope reflects snake and sunrays reflects the water, similarly you are the only one in the world which gives the reflection of every object or ingredient. After all this also, you are the most supreme.

महाज्योति एका संहासनम् वत् त्वकीयान् सुरान वाहयस्युग्रमूर्ते ।
अवष्टभ्य पदभ्याम् शिवं भैरवं च स्थिता तेन मध्ये भवत्येव मुख्या ॥१४

Hey Aaporva Roopani ( beautiful) ! You provide devatas with utmost position and power. When angry, you supress Lord Shiva and Lord Bhairav underneath.

कुयोग आसने योग मुद्राभिनीति: कुगोसायु पोतस्य वालाननं च ।
जगन्मातरादृक तवा पूर्वलीला कथं कारमस्मद्विधैर्देवि गम्या ॥१५

Hey Goddess! Your beauty lies in your images ( sitting on a dead body and wearing a necklace of skulls around her neck etc.) I can not understand this beauty of yours and none can.

महाघोर कालानल ज्वाल ज्वाल सित्यत्यंतवासा महाट्टाहासा ।
जटाभार काला महामुण्ड माला विशाला त्वमहित मयाध्यायशSम्ब ॥१६

Hey Amba! You are the main component in the middle of the branch of Mahaghor Kalaanal as a Jatadharini ( one with long hair). Black in colour with a mala of skulls looks powerful. I pay my devotion to you.

तपोनैव कुर्वन् वपु: सदयामि ब्रजन्नापि तीर्थ पदे खंजयामि ।
पटठन्नापि वेदान् चनि यापयामि त्वदंघ्रिद्वयं मंगल साधयामि ॥१७

Hey Goddess! I do not want to devote/ finish my body in worship. Neither do I want to paralyse my legs by roaming/visiting Teeth (Pieus) places nor do I want to end my life in the knowledge if Vedas. I only want to perform my services for you and at your feet.

तिरस्कुर्वतोsन्यामारो पास नार्चे परित्यक्त धर्माध्वरस्यास्य जन्तो: ।
त्वदाराधनान्यस्त चित्तस्य किं मे करिष्यन्तयमी धर्मराज्य दूता: ॥१८

O Goddess! I have given up my believings and worships for other Lords, giving up all the religious feelings, have diverted my heart towards your devotion. What can the messengers of Dharmaraaj do to me? When you are there to protect me.

न मन्यसे हरि न वुधातारमीशं न वह्निं न ह्यर्क न चेन्द्रादि देवान् ।
शिवोदीरितानेक वाक्यप्रबन्ध स्त्वदर्चाविधानं विशत्वम्ब मत्याम् ॥१९

Hey Ambey! I do not believe in Hari, Brahma, Ishaan, Agni ( fire), Sura, Indra. I believe in towards of Shiva. In the result your vidhi should enter my heart.

नरा मां विनिन्दन्तु नाम त्यजेद्वान्धंवा ज्ञातय: सन्त्यजन्तु ।
मयि भटा नारके पातयन्तु त्वमेका गतिर्मे त्वमेका गतिर्मे ॥२०

Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are the same

These days various people are debating about Shaivism and Vaishnavism. There's been certain leaders saying Lord Vishnu is great and some saying Lord Shiva is great. Veda Vyasa is the author of all the Vedas and Purans. He himself said Devi the mother of this whole universe including Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. He even said that without the recite of Devi Bhagavatam there is no liberation. Thus, the following stanza from Devi Bhagavatam proves that Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are the same.

कदाचिद् देवदेवो मां ध्यायत्यमितविक्रम: ।ध्यायाम्यहं च देवेशं शंकर त्रिपुरान्तकम् ॥ शिवस्याहं प्रिय: प्राण: शंकरस्तु तथा मम । उभयोरन्तरं नास्ति मिथ: संसक्तचेतस: ॥ नरक यान्ति ते नूनं ये द्विषन्ति महेश्वरम् । भक्ता मम विशालाक्षि सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥

भगवान् विष्णु बोले – प्रिये ! मैं हृदयमें जिनका ध्यान कर रहा हूँ, उनका परिचय देता हूँ, सुनो । पार्वतीपति भगवान् शंकर सबसे प्रधना माने जाते हैं । तुरंत प्रसन्न हो जाना उनका स्वाभाविक गुण है ! उन देवधिदेवके पराक्रमकी कोई सीमा नहीं है । कभी तो ऐसा होता है कु त्रिपुरासुरका वध करनेवाले वे देवेश मेरा ध्यान करते हैं और मैं उनका करता हूँ । उनका प्रिय प्राण मैं हूँ और मेरे प्रिय प्राण वे हैं । हम दोनोंका चित्त परस्पर गुँथा हुआ है । अत: दोनोंमें किंचिन्मात्र भेद नहीं समझना चाहिये । विशाललोचने ! जो भगवान् शंकरसे द्वेष करते हैं, वे मेरे भक्त ही क्यों न हों; किंतु नरकमें जाना उनके लिये अनिवार्य है । मैं यह बलकुल सत्य बता रहा हूँ ।

कुचेलनामा भवत: सतीर्थ्यतां गत: स सान्दीपनिमन्दिरे द्विज: ।
त्वदेकरागेण धनादिनिस्स्पृहो दिनानि निन्ये प्रशमी गृहाश्रमी ॥१॥

The Brahmin by the name Kuchela (Sudaamaa) was Thy fellow disciple in the hermitage of sage Saandipini. He was totally devoted to Thee. A house holder with a controlled mind and senses, he spent his days calmly without any worldly desires of wealth etc.

समानशीलाऽपि तदीयवल्लभा तथैव नो चित्तजयं समेयुषी ।
कदाचिदूचे बत वृत्तिलब्धये रमापति: किं न सखा निषेव्यते ॥२॥

His wife who equalled him in nature, had not achieved the same level of desirelessness as him. Once she asked him why should he not approach his friend Krishna, the Consort of Laxmi, for getting some means of livelihood.

इतीरितोऽयं प्रियया क्षुधार्तया जुगुप्समानोऽपि धने मदावहे ।
तदा त्वदालोकनकौतुकाद्ययौ वहन् पटान्ते पृथुकानुपायनम् ॥३॥

Kuchela set off for Thy place more out of eagerness to meet Thee than for acquiring a means of livelihood, as prodded by his wife, troubled by hunger. He had a repulsiveness towards wealth because of its proneness to generate pride and arrogance. He carried in a corner of his cloth some beaten rice as an offering to Thee.

गतोऽयमाश्चर्यमयीं भवत्पुरीं गृहेषु शैब्याभवनं समेयिवान् ।
प्रविश्य वैकुण्ठमिवाप निर्वृतिं तवातिसम्भावनया तु किं पुन: ॥४॥

Kuchela reached Thy wonderful city and among the many houses, entered the house of Mitravrindaa. As he did so he attained supreme peace as though he had entered Vaikuntha only, more so by Thy lavishing hospitality beyond description.

प्रपूजितं तं प्रियया च वीजितं करे गृहीत्वाऽकथय: पुराकृतम् ।
यदिन्धनार्थं गुरुदारचोदितैरपर्तुवर्ष तदमर्षि कानने ॥५॥

After a cordial reception by Thee as he was fanned by Thy consort, Thou held his hands and recalled the old incidents. Like when at the behest of the teacher's wife, Thou went togather to gather fire wood and were caught in an unseasonal rain in the forest.

त्रपाजुषोऽस्मात् पृथुकं बलादथ प्रगृह्य मुष्टौ सकृदाशिते त्वया ।
कृतं कृतं नन्वियतेति संभ्रमाद्रमा किलोपेत्य करं रुरोध ते ॥६॥

Kuchela was feeling very shy and so Thou forcefully snatched the flattened rice from him and ate a fistful. Just then in great consternation Ramaa approached Thee and held back Thy hand saying that that much was indeed enough.

भक्तेषु भक्तेन स मानितस्त्वया पुरीं वसन्नेकनिशां महासुखम् ।
बतापरेद्युर्द्रविणं विना ययौ विचित्ररूपस्तव खल्वनुग्रह: ॥७॥

He was greatly honoured by Thee the devoted of the devotees, and very happily stayed in Thy city for one night. The next day he went away alas without any wealth. Strange indeed are Thy forms of blessings.

यदि ह्ययाचिष्यमदास्यदच्युतो वदामि भार्यां किमिति व्रजन्नसौ ।
त्वदुक्तिलीलास्मितमग्नधी: पुन: क्रमादपश्यन्मणिदीप्रमालयम् ॥८॥

Had I but asked for wealth Krishna would surely have given. What shall I tell my wife? Thus telling himself he walked along immersed in the memories of Thy talks and Thy playful smile. By and by he reached a gem studded splendorous mansion.

किं मार्गविभ्रंश इति भ्रंमन् क्षणं गृहं प्रविष्ट: स ददर्श वल्लभाम् ।
सखीपरीतां मणिहेमभूषितां बुबोध च त्वत्करुणां महाद्भुताम् ॥९॥

What have I lost my way?' Thus wondering for a moment he entered the house. He saw his wife adorned in ornaments of gems and gold and surrounded by ladies in waiting. He then realised Thy grace and compassion and the most wonderful results of the same.

स रत्नशालासु वसन्नपि स्वयं समुन्नमद्भक्तिभरोऽमृतं ययौ ।
त्वमेवमापूरितभक्तवाञ्छितो मरुत्पुराधीश हरस्व मे गदान् ॥१०॥

Residing in the begemmed mansion he himself was full of devotion for Thee which incessently grew of its own. In the end he attained liberation. Thou in such a manner fulfilled the desire of Thy devotee. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Be pleased to rid me of my ailments.

He who hides the world by illusion, He who controls his five senses,

He who is a dwarf, He who lies down on water,

He who troubles bad people, He who is remover of death and birth,

He who is black, He who is on the side of Lakshmi,

He who has the Bird Garuda on his flag.

वाराहं पुण्डरीकाक्षं नृसिंहं नरकान्तकम् ।

अव्यक्तं शाश्वतं विष्णुमनन्तमजमव्ययम् ॥२॥

He who is a boar, He who has lotus like eyes,

He who is the man-lion, He who puts an end to hell,

He who is not clear to us, He who is permanent,

He who is Vishnu, He who is endless, He who is without change.

नारायणं गदाध्यक्षं गोविन्दं कीर्तिभाजनम् ।

गोवर्धनोद्धरं देवं भूधरं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥३॥

He who was born out of water, He who is an expert in mace,

He who looks after all beings, He who is the one with fame.

He who is the Lord, He who lifted Govardhana mountain,

He who lifted the earth, He who is the Lord of universe.

वेत्तारं यज्ञपुरुषं यज्ञेशं यज्ञवाहकम् ।

चक्रपाणिं गदापाणिं शङ्खपाणिं नरोत्तमम् ॥४॥

He who is meditated by sages, He who is addressed by Yagnas,

He who is the Lord of the Yagna, He who is the vehicle of Yagna,

He who holds the wheel, He who holds the mace,

He who holds the conch, He who is the greatest among men.

वैकुण्ठं दुष्टदमनं भूगर्भं पीतवाससम् ।

त्रिविक्रमं त्रिकालज्ञं त्रिमूर्तिं नन्दिकेश्वरम् ॥५॥

He who lives in Vaikunta, He who controls bad people,

He who holds earth inside his Tummy, He who wears red cloths,

He who is Trivikrama, He who is the past, present and future,

He who is the holy trinity, He who is the Lord of Yadavas.

रामं रामं हयग्रीवं भीमं रौद्रं भवोद्भवम् ।

श्रीपतिं श्रीधरं श्रीशं मङ्गलं मङ्गलायुधम् ॥६॥

He who is Sri Rama, He who is Parasu Rama, He who is Hayagreeva,

He who is gross, He who is angry, He who was produced before everything,

He who is the consort of Lakshmi, He who carries Lakshmi, He who is the Lord of Lakshmi,

He who does only good, He who has weapons for doing good only.

दामोदरं दमोपेतं केशवं केशिसूदनम् ।

वरेण्यं वरदं विष्णुमानन्दं वसुदेवजम् ॥७॥

He who was tied by a rope in the belly, He who cuts off bondage,

He who has a pretty hair, He who killed the asura Kesi,

He who should be prayed to, He who blesses,

He who is Vishnu, He who is joy, He who is the son of Vasudeva.

हिरण्यरेतसं दीप्तं पुराणं पुरुषोत्तमम् ।

सकलं निष्कलं शुद्धं निर्गुणं गुणशाश्वतम् ॥८॥

He who has golden virility, He who enlightens, He who is ancient,

He who is greatest among men, He who is everything, He who does not have stain,

He who is pure, He who does not have any properties, He who has stable characters.

हिरण्यतनुसङ्काशं सूर्यायुतसमप्रभम् ।

मेघश्यामं चतुर्बाहुं कुशलं कमलेक्षणम् ॥९॥

He who has gold like body, He who shines like the Sun,

He who is black like a cloud, He who has four hands,

He who is always all right, He who has lotus like eyes.

ज्योतीरूपमरूपं च स्वरूपं रूपसंस्थितम् ।

सर्वज्ञं सर्वरूपस्थं सर्वेशं सर्वतोमुखम् ॥१०॥

He who is like flame, He who does not have any shape,

He who has a form, He who is blessed with good form,

He who knows everything, He who assumes all forms,

He who is the God of all, He who sees in all directions.

ज्ञानं कूटस्थमचलं ज्ञानदं परमं प्रभुम् ।

योगीशं योगनिष्णातं योगिनं योगरूपिणम् ॥११॥

He who is wisdom, He who is steady, He who is stable,

He who is full of wisdom, He who is the divine, He who is the Lord,

He who is the chief of Yoga, He who is the ultimate lord of Yoga,

He who is a Yogi, He who is personification of Yoga.

ईश्वरं सर्वभूतानां वन्दे भूतमयं प्रभुम् ।

इति नामशतं दिव्यं वैष्णवं खलु पापहम् ॥१२॥

He who is the God of all beings, Salutations the Lord who pervades everywhere,

These are the hundred names of Vishnu which removes specially sins.

व्यासेन कथितं पूर्वं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ।

यः पठेत्प्रातरुत्थाय स भवेद्वैष्णवो नरः ॥१३॥

This which was told by Vyasa long ago, kills all sins.

If read as soon as one gets up in the morning,He would become a man of Vishnu.

सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विष्णुसायुज्यमाप्नुयात् ।

चान्द्रायणसहस्राणि कन्यादानशतानि च ॥१४॥

गवां लक्षसहस्राणि मुक्तिभागी भवेन्नरः ।

अश्वमेधायुतं पुण्यं फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१५॥

He would become purified from all sins and would become one with Vishnu,

He would get the effect of performing one thousand Chandrayanas,

And he would get the effect of performing one hundred marriages,

He would give the effect of giving away hundreds of lakhs of cows,

And also get the effect of performing an Aswamedha Yaga.

। इति श्रीविष्णुपुराणे विष्णुशतनामस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ।
