Film yang diambil dari karya novel Abidah El. Khalieqy ini adalah film tentang salah satu dunia paralel perempuan. Berkisah tentang Anissa, seorang perempuan dari pesantren yang berjuang untuk mendapatkan hak-nya.

Hak untuk memilih hidup tanpa ada tekanan, termasuk juga tekanan yang mengatasnamakan agama.

Ini kisah tentang perempuan yang percaya kalau agamanya, Islam, yang akan membawa kebebasannya sebagai manusia bukan malah mengurungnya.

Dalam press conference yang berlangsung di Planet Hollywood (12/1), Hanung mengatakan bahwa ia sadar hal ini adalah sesuatu hal yang sensitif sifatnya dan mengundang kontroversi namun ia mengajak para penonton untuk menelaah lebih dalam, jauh dari wacana Islam serta pertentangannya.

Ia juga mengatakan bahwa semua disajikan berimbang, hingga tidak ada unsur menghakimi. Sementara dari sisi sang penulis, ketika ditanyakan seberapa besar penyajian film dengan isi novel yang ia tulis, Abidah mengatakan meski ada beberapa hal yang ingin diartikulasikan dalam film namun hal itu tidak terjadi.

Ia menganggap pihak sutradara begitu apik mengemas film ini menjadi lebih ringan penyajiannya namun tidak melepas inti dari isi cerita.
