Top 10 Largest and Rarest diamonds ever found

1. The Blue Heart

The Blue Heart diamond is 30.82 carats. The gem was cut into its distinctive shape in 1909-1910 and was bought by Cartier shortly thereafter. Since then it has bounced around from a wealthy Argentinian woman, Van Cleef and Arpels, a European family, Harry Winston, Marjorie Merriweather Post, and, finally, the Smithsonian, where The Blue Heart has resided since 1964. And although it may look like it inspired the fictional Heart of the Ocean from the 1997 Leonardo DiCaprio epic, it didn’t – the Heart of the Ocean was actually based on the infamous Hope Diamond.

2. The Centenary Diamond

On March 1, 1988, De Beers was having a big bash to celebrate their 100 years in business. Chairman Julian Oglivie capped off his speech with a little tidbit that stunned the crowd – De Beers’ Premier Mine had recently uncovered a diamond that was perfect in color and weighed 599 carats. It had been found nearly two years before; the company kept it quiet for the sole purpose of flaunting it at their 100th anniversary.

3. The Cullinan Diamond

At an insane 3,106.75 carats the Cullinan is the largest diamond ever found. It was split into nine big chunks, 96 small ones and 9.5 carats of unpolished pieces. They’re all part of the Crown Jewels or belong in the private collection of the royal family:

Cullinan I, AKA the Star of Africa, is 530.20 carats and resides in the Sovereign’s Royal Sceptre.

Cullinan II, AKA the Lesser Star of Africa, is a bit smaller at 317.40 carats and is mounted in the Imperial State Crown.

Cullinan III is a 94.40-carat pear-shaped diamond that can be mounted in Queen Mary’s Crown or worn with the Cullinan IV as part of a pendant. Versatility is so important, don’t you agree?

Cullinan IV, 63.60 carats, can either be part of the pendant or set in Queen Mary’s Crown as well.

Cullinan V is a measly 18.80-carat triangular-pear cut diamond and can either be in a brooch or mounted in the circlet of Queen Mary’s Crown. The Koh-i-Noor diamond used to be set in that spot, but when it was later moved to another crown, the Cullinan V took its place.

Cullinan VI is sometimes worn by Queen Elizabeth II as part of an emerald and diamond necklace. I suppose at 11.50 carats, it’s less ostentatious than some of the others.

Cullinan VII and Cullinan VIII have been combined into an all-diamond brooch.

Finally, the Cullinan IX, coming in at 4.39 carats, is worn by Queen Elizabeth as a ring.

4. The Golden Eye Diamond

The world’s largest flawless Canary Yellow diamond. Its original uncut 124.5-carat state. This particular type of diamond – a fancy intense yellow – accounts for less than 0.1 percent of all natural diamonds, so you can imagine how rare one this size is. The gem was cut to a still-huge 43.51 carats and somehow became entangled in a drug dealing and money laundering ring in Ohio, which was busted in 2006. As a result, the unusual jewel became property of the U.S. government. Just as of May 11, 2009, it was declared that the Golden Eye diamond belonged to the government, and in turn, the government announced that it would be auctioning the diamond off. So if you’re looking for a rare yellow diamond in the neighborhood of $15-$20 million.

5. The Koh-i-noor

The Koh-i-noor is more than 5,000 years old.For hundreds of years it was in the possession of various Indian Emperors and was even installed into the Peacock Throne of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.But in 1851, it was decided that the bauble would be presented to Queen Victoria, who immediately put it on display at the Crystal Palace Exhibition. After it was cut down by about 80 carats to its current 108.93 size, the diamond was moved to the Queen consort’s crown (used by both Queen Alexandra of Denmark and Queen Mary of Teck) and finally to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother’s crown in 1936. It remained there until her death in 2002 and was set in the Imperial State Crown afterward.

6. Spirit of de Grisogono

The largest cut black diamond in the world is also the world’s fifth-largest diamond of any kind, weighing in at 312.24 carats. It was 587 carats before it was cut. The Spirit of de Grisogono is set in a ring that contains 702 white diamonds and is thought to have been sold to a private collector.

7. The Earth Star

When this huge sparkler was found at a South African De Beers mine in 1967, it was a whopping 248.9 carats. As you can imagine, it caused quite the stir in the industry, and not just because of its massive size. It was actually the color everyone was talking about: The Earth Star was brown. The Baum gold Bros. jewelers bought the enormous jewel and cut it into a pear shape that ended up weighing 111.59 carats, which was the largest brown diamond in the world at the time (it’s still the third largest brown diamond… we’ll get to the largest in a minute). It was Baum gold that gave the diamond its name. For more than 15 years, the Earth Star traveled the world in various exhibitions, but it was bought by a private citizen in 1983 for the staggering sum of $900,000.

8. The Golden Jubilee

It’s the largest faceted diamond in the world. But when it was first discovered in 1985, people in the industry refered to the 755.5 uncut rock as “The Unnamed Brown” and “The Ugly Duckling.” Since it was kind of homely, De Beers decided to let jewel cutter Gabriel Tolkow sky try an experimental method of cutting using some untested tools. They figured if he messed it up, it was no great loss – the thing was going to be unmarketable anyway. Under Tolkow sky’s hands, though, the Ugly Duckling turned into an amazing yellow-brown diamond of epic proportions. It was presented to the King of Thailand for his Golden Jubilee in 1997, which is when it finally received an appropriate name. It’s still a part of the Crown Jewels of Thailand today.

9. The Ocean Dream Diamond

The Ocean Dream may be small – a mere 5.51 carats – but it’s the only diamond in the world of its kind. No other diamond is known to naturally possess a blue-green hue like this one. The color is thought to have come from being exposed to natural radiation in Central Africa for thousands of years. It’s currently owned by the Cora Diamond Corporation, but you might have seen it at the Smithsonian as part of “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit a few years back.

10. The Hope Diamond

This 45.52 fancy deep blue diamond is gorgeous, to be sure, but also deadly – at least according to some. The Hope’s story starts with the Tavernier Blue, a crudely cut triangular stone of about 115 carats that was sold to King Louis XIV in 1669. Several years later, Louis had the stone cut down to about 67 carats and had it suspended on a gold ribbon so he could wear it on formal occasions. He renamed the new cut the “French Blue.” In the mid 1700s, Louis XV had the gem set into a pendant and it was much speculated that Marie Antoinette wore it; the curse is the reason she was beheaded. Not so, say most historians: there’s no evidence that it ever adorned the doomed Queen. The French Blue mysteriously disappeared in a jewel heist in 1792 and never turned up again. However, the Hope Diamond suddenly arrived on the scene just as the statute of limitations on the jewel heist was running out 20 years later. It happened to be the exact same color as the missing French Blue, although it had been cut differently and was decidedly smaller. The Hope had several British owners throughout the 1800s, although, surprisingly, it never came into the hands of the Royal Family. By 1910, famed jeweler Pierre Cartier had acquired the blue beauty and sold it to American socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean. She wasn’t interested until he reset the old stone in a modern setting and told her tales of the curse. She wore the stone for 37 years (and often let her dog wear it around the house as well) and left it to her grandchildren upon her death in 1947. However, she was quite in debt, and her trustees ended up selling it in order to pay of some of the money she owed.

That’s how Harry Winston ended up owning it until 1958, when he decided that it belonged to the Smithsonian and sent it there in an uninsured brown paper envelope. It’s still part of the Smithsonian today, and so is the envelope (that’s it above). Google Wave: Our First Hands-On Impressions

When Google Wave made its public debut last week, it created quite a stir, but without being able to get a hands-on look at the product, it was quite hard to really grasp the implications of what Google was trying to do. Today, we got access to Wave, and after testing it for a while, we can confidently say that Google is indeed on to something. The developer sandbox version we have access to is still a bit rough around the edges, and quite a few functions are still unavailable.

Just a Preview - Lots More to Come

During our test this afternoon, we also got to chat with Jens and Lars Rasmussen, who gave the first official demo last week. They stressed that the team is currently fully focused on getting the developer preview for third-party developers right, so everything we say here about the UI is still in flux and will definitely change before the final release.

Chances are that you have already seen some screenshots or seen the demo on YouTube (more than 1.5 million people have seen it already), but here is a short video of what a wave looks like in action.

What is Wave?

One thing we immediately noticed is that it takes a little bit to get used to how Wave works. The first thing new users will probably notice is that Wave always shows you exactly what your contacts are typing in real-time (if you ever used the talk command in UNIX, you know what this feels like). Even when adding a map, you can see how someone scrolls around it to mark a spot, for example. After using it for a while, we have come to think as Wave as real-time email with a big dose of IM built-in, but even this only just describes a small part of what Wave can do.

Giving it a Spin

As you have probably seen in the videos and screenshots, Wave features a sidebar on the left and two large columns on the right. Overall, the look (but not the functionality) is somewhat reminiscent of the layout you would expect from an email client or a three-pane feed reader.

The sidebar features the functions for navigation, as well as your contacts. The larger column on the left is basically your inbox. By default, this column shows recently active conversations, or, depending on what you want to look at, a history of archived waves, waves marked as spam (there is, of course, no spam on Wave yet), or all the waves initiated by you.

The most interesting column, though, is the one on the right, because this is where you type your messages. Here, you can initiate new messages and waves, but you can also easily respond to messages, add new contacts to a wave, and send private messages to select users. One nice feature is that you can pick a specific word or phrase and respond to that, instead of the whole message.

Doing the Wave

As you are typing a message, a number of new icons appear at the top of the column. Currently, the most interesting one here is the Google widget, which allows you to very easily search Google and add a link to the wave. You can also search YouTube and Google Images and embed videos and pictures with just one click. The Wave team will surely expand these offerings (there is already a link to search Google Books, though it is currently not active, yet). Another option here is to embed a map that you can extend by setting place markers and drawing lines.

To add a picture or any other kind of file to a wave, you just have to drag and drop it onto a wave from your desktop. Wave also features a nice, lightbox-style photo viewer that allows you to browse through all the images in a wave.

In the long term, all of these functions will be expanded by third-party developers who will probably come up with exciting new ways to make use of Wave. Given that the open APIs will allow developers to take Wave into new directions, and also implement its functionality in other places, we are very excited to hear that the team will open up Wave to more developers later this week.

According to the Rasmussen brothers, only a small number of third-party developers have access to Google Wave at this point. However, by the end of the week, this number should go up to almost 2000 - and judging from what we have heard and read, there is a lot of interest in the developer community and we will definitely see a lot of activity in this area in the next few months.

Not just Real-Time Chat

It should also be noted that the real-time chat is really only one aspect of Wave. There is no reason why the chat couldn't be used as an internal micro-blogging tool, for example. As Jens Rasmussen pointed out to us, it is this mix of uses in different scenarios that may be the most exciting aspect of Wave. While the real-time aspects of Wave are currently at the forefront of what people have been excited about, there is no reason why users couldn't use it as a replacement for regular email as well - or why they couldn't switch from one mode to another at will.

A Few More Thoughts

Presence will be indicated by a green dot on users' avatars - very much like IM.
One thing that got to us was that hitting the Enter key will just give you a new line, but to finish a message, you have to hit Shift+Enter, which takes a bit of getting used to.
At this point, long waves with a lot of concurrent users can get a bit confusing. While the messages are timestamped, it would be great if there were some stronger visual clues as to which messages are new. You can easily get to new messages by hitting the space bar, but even then, sometimes it is still a bit hard to see what messages you are actually looking at.
Unlike Gmail, Wave actually features traditional folders and you can filter out messages by keywords. In addition, you can also tag waves.
It would be nice if you could turn the real-time aspect of Wave off and only have your messages appear in a Wave after it was completed.
The playback function that was prominently featured in the demo last week is interesting, but we are not sure how useful it will be in daily use.
Currently, the automatic spell-checker on Wave is offline, so we couldn't test it, but we'll update this post once it works again.
We tested Wave in Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer - as expected, it didn't work in IE but worked perfectly fine in all the other browsers.

Will Wave Revolutionize EMail?

The big question on everybody's mind, though, is if Google and the Wave team can hold true to their promise of 'reinventing email for the 21st century.' What we have seen so far is only the tip of the iceberg, but we can already envision how this could replace our internal chat room here at RWW, and how it could revolutionize the way employees in a company communicate. Wave definitely takes some getting used to, but once you get into the flow of things, regular email suddenly feels stale and slow.

Like any great tool, Wave gives its users a lot of flexibility and never gets in your way. If you want a Wave to look more like a document instead of a conversation, Wave will work just as well as when you just want to use it as a chat room.

It's still too early to argue about whether Wave can or will ever replace email (it's only a developer preview at this point after all). However, after using it for a while we were already wishing that we could add more of our contacts to our list so that it could become our default messaging system. Until then, though, we are back to Gmail and IM

Dustbot, the robotic garbage man, can be summoned at any time via cellphone

From the home of the three minute pizza machine comes a robotic, tireless garbage collector. Called the Dustbot, it stands almost as tall as a man and is designed to navigate the narrow streets of Italy, where a boxy garbage truck wouldn't fit.

The Dustbot also trumps the garbage truck (in theory), as it can be summoned to your door at any time through your cell. This eliminates the need for a standardized route and, with enough Dustbots out on the street, trash wouldn't be sitting out on the curb for all that long. It's easy to imagine this going horribly wrong, but it's an interesting approach to trash collection, and it's a definite advantage when it comes to robotic trash collection.

10. Dattoos: Interactive Tattoos

No one brings concept design to reality like Frog Design. Winners of numerous design awards over the years, Frog has become synonymous with powerful technology meeting artistic design. So when we found Frog's Dattoo (interactive tattoo) concept, it was like finding futurist gold. Designed by Hartmut Esslinger, Dattoos would conceivably bring us to that final convergence of man and machine. The Dattoos would offer: DNA-reader and identification technology, nanosensors and interactive "touch reading," full voice interaction, bionic nano chips and various cybernetic components. While Dattoos would definitely look cool, what Esslinger is imagining here is nothing short of the Borg. But hey, who said being a mindless drone working within a hive mind had to be drab?

9. Astrium Spaceplane

The race to full-on space tourism is in full swing, but we're still in the early stages of the industry, so naturally style and comfort has taken a backseat to safety and practicality. The Astrium Spaceplane looks to up the ante and allow spacefaring travelers the opportunity to look into infinity whilst nestled in comfortable and familiar surroundings. Australian designer Marc Newson's concept vehicle doesn't propel passengers into a far-out science-fiction realm, but if the near term of space tourism really looks like this the spaceports will likely be jam-packed and delayed like your favorite local commercial airport in no time.

8. Custom Kicks

Sneaker culture has transcended the world of fashion and transformed into an art form unto itself. Brand loyalty and price-tag importance has fallen by the wayside as pure originality and exclusive design have become the mark of a true sneaker aficionado. But nowadays, finding one of those unseen designs has become even more difficult. Enter Custom Kicks, a concept designed by the Inventables studio. Custom Kicks would allow wearers to instantly change the design of their shoes on the fly with a mere push of a button. Using a tiny iPod-like device, sneaker fanatics would beam a new pre-designed pattern to their feet and immediately up the ante on the fashion wars. We want this yesterday.

7. Nikon 360

In Star Trek: Voyager and Deep Space Nine, characters used a holographic camera to snap instant three-dimensional replicas of certain moments in time. We're not quite there yet, but in the meantime the idea behind the Nikon 360 concept camera seems like a reasonable facsimile. According to Ye Chen, designer of the device, the camera would take an all-round picture using a built-in inclinometer indicating the horizontal position prior to execution. Sure, panoramic photos are already in existence, but they take a little more work. With the Nikon 360, capturing surround-vision images would become literally a snap.

6. Honda Cub Motocycle

Sam Jibert's Honda Cub Motocycle concept vehicle takes the macho out of the road hog and adds just enough clean design and geek friendliness to ensure a consumer hit. Looking like a cross between a 19th-century bicycle and a modern-day crotch rocket, the Honda Cub Motocycle is not only cute but enviro-friendly since it uses a hydrogen fuel cell. If Dean Kamen's Segway had been this cool-looking, maybe Steve Jobs' initial prediction that it would change the way cities were built would have come true.

5. Pills To Go

British designer Priestman Goode has envisioned a product so simple and practical, it's astounding to think that this isn't already available. Pills To Go combines two caplets of your favorite medicinal salve with a hearty gulp of water all in one package. So simple, so convenient, yet as of now, still a futuristic concept. When eventually brought to market by some company — and you can rest assured that it will definitely happen — Pills To Go is sure to be one of the biggest sellers of all time.

4. WPA Wearable Power Suit

Vlady Spetkovsky designed the WPA wearable power suit as a project for the Bezalel Academy of art and design in Israel. Although Spetkovsky doesn't offer much detail regarding what the suit would actually do, after watching his animated 3D movie showing the suit in action it's reasonable to assume that it would increase the strength and speed of the wearer via an accumulator-powered exoskeleton. That's right friends, with suits like this, one day we'll all get to live out our superhero fantasies.

3. B-Membrain Computer

The B-Membrain won't transport you into another dimension or suddenly become self-aware and declare that all humans are obsolete, but it does offer something we can all relate to: sexy hardware. Winner of Intel Korea's recent PC Design Contest (Challenger category), the B-Membrain does away with the computer monitor and instead beams images to any surface via a built-in projector. As for input, the keyboard is described by its designer Won-Suk Lee as a touchscreen interface. Sure, the B-Membrain looks weird and you'd probably have trouble figuring out where to put to the oddly shaped contraption, but never has a more sci-fi-ish computer been so within reach.

2. Credit Card of the Future

Paying bills will never be fun, but in the future there's a chance that you'll at least be able to pay the piper in style. To that end, designer Jacob Palmborg mocked up a universal payment device that simultaneously links to all of your banking and credit accounts. The unnamed device would keep a real-time accounting of just how much you've spent, and what your near-term financial forecast looks like based on recent purchase activity. And if that's not Big Brother enough for you, the device would only be accessible via biometric (think thumbprint, eyescan, etc.) verification. With RFID tap-and-pay bankcards already being used throughout the U.S., it seems like this little gadget's emergence is just a matter of time.

It's been awhile since a cross-demographic product has swept the country, but something like the Timeflex stick-on watch might just do the trick. Imagined as a non-permanent, self-gumming timepiece, the Timeflex would make the perfect accessory for style-conscious millennials (read: teens), on-the-go professionals, and athletes (swimmers, rock climbers, runners, etc.). The outlines of the device are meant to be fluorescent, with the interior sporting a transparent surface so you can show off your fashion-forward sensibility, and a little skin in process.
