Memories do not always return as clear images. Sometimes they remain as a vague impression, sometimes as a strong feeling – but over time, they begin to fade. In her minimalist, material-driven paintings, France-based artist Ekaterina Galera explores the surface as a place of memory. Born and raised in Siberia near the Mongolian border, the landscape of vast steppes, pale horizons and muted light of her homeland continues to inform the restrained color palette of her works. Subtle horizontal lines […]

It never ceases to amaze me how much Constantin Brâncuși’s sculptures draw me in. Their radical reduction to the essential, the clarity of their forms, and the tranquility they convey continue to fascinate me. Brâncuși freed sculpture from everything superfluous. He was not interested in mere representation but in the essence of a form – and this is precisely where his significance as one of the most important pioneers of modern sculpture lies. Viktor Kobylianski (b. 1995, Kyiv, Ukraine) is a Portland-based artist whose process-driven practice explores the quiet persistence of traces. Working with materials such as cement slurries, dust, sand, and pigments, the artist spreads and manipulates these materials across unprimed fabric with his hands. He allows them to […]

I recently had the opportunity to visit Ann Edholm’s current exhibition »Voices / Röster« at Galerie Nordenhake in Berlin. Edholm, born in 1953 in Stockholm, is considered one of the most renowned abstract painters in her country. Her often monumental works combine geometric abstraction with subtle expressionistic gestures. In this show, Edholm brings together significant works from the early 1990s and a new body of paintings from this year that marks a new phase in her practice. I must admit […]

The year is drawing to a close, but for lovers of minimalist art, there are still some exhibitions worth seeing in December: In Paris, Galerie Mennour is showing new works by Lee Ufan, while the Bourse de Commerce is highlighting the development of Minimal Art since the 1960s. In New Canaan, Marisa Purcell and Ashley Lyon explore the interplay between material and perception.

At the beginning of November, I traveled to Paris with great anticipation to see the exhibition ‘Minimal’ at the Bourse de Commerce, never suspecting that I would leave it with a feeling of disappointment. Curated by Jessica Morgan, director of the Dia Art Foundation, the show promised to present Minimal Art not only as a US phenomenon but as a global, multifaceted discourse since the 1960s/1970s. So the show seemed like a must-see for me – but, if I’m honest, […]
