Your Toronto Marlies are Calder Cup champions. You're forgiven if you were distracted and didn't notice. With the World Cup, and typical Toronto June madness, it's tough for our AHL affiliate to cut through the noise. But they beat the Chicago Wolves last night at Coca-Cola Coliseum 4-3 and took the championship series in five games.

When I saw the Marlies were up in the third period, I wanted to click away from the soccer match to see if they could hold on, but it seems I do not subscribe to Sportsnet 360. My loss, I suppose, but I wasn't about to give Rogers another red cent. I'm so sick of Rogers, but that's another post entirely.

Goaltender Artur Akhtyamov was named playoff MVP as the Marlies won their second cup. I actually have a replica of their 2018 Calder Cup championship ring in my podcast studio.

I suppose this was inevitable. CBC will no longer air Hockey Night in Canada. Rogers has controlled the content and sold the ads for Hockey Night in Canada for the past 12 years, but CBC still aired this content. But that deal has expired.

I'm honestly not the least bit surprised. In fact, I was always surprised CBC cooperated with this deal, without benefitting from the ad revenue. Still, it's the end of an era as Hockey Night in Canada has aired on CBC since 1952.

Here's the joint statement from Rogers and CBC.

After a successful 12-year partnership, Sportsnet and CBC today announced the public broadcaster will no longer carry NHL broadcasts after the current season as it moves forward with a new sports programming strategy following the unprecedented success of the Milano/Cortina Olympic Games.

Watching hockey on Saturday night is a time-honoured tradition for Canadians, and Sportsnet is privileged to continue delivering that tradition. This has been a terrific partnership, and both parties look forward to continued opportunities to collaborate in the future.

My oldest son is a university graduate, and I'm very proud. It was my honour to spend hours at York's Sobeys Stadium just to see that 30 seconds when they announced my son's name and he walked on stage to receive his degree.
