Kilink Frankestayn ve Dr. No’ya Karsi aka Kilink vs Frankenstein 1968Sinematurk Link Written and directed by Nuri Akinci It’s that time again! Time for a film that was once lost to be found and we all marvel at it! Real Mysterious Order-heads know that there are a bunch of films about guys in skeleton suits running around being anti-heroes or just plain villains but also sometimes being heroes. A quick primer – Pulp characters who were super criminals have existed for a long time, but one of the most influential was France’s Fantômas, created in 1911 by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre. Fantômas was a criminal genius who ran rings around the police while also stealing and murdering whoever he wanted in bizarre methods. The tales proved popular and spawned a whole series of sequels, imitators, and appearances in other media. Several iterations of villain heroes later, and we have comic character Diabolik, a ruthless thief who evolved over time into an honorable thief. Shortly after was the skeleton-suited Kriminal, who had a similar villain to hero arc but did so sooner (despite being a clear copy of Diabolik!) This lead to Killing (also known as Satanik and later Sadistik), another skeleton suited villain, but this one starred in photo novels instead of comics, was much more lurid, and never really gained the heroic edge. Kilink is a rip off of him, but pulls elements from all the characters and thanks to there being a lot of different unauthorized Kilink films from different creators, he can be whatever type of character is needed for a ridiculous pulp plot to happen! We’ve covered Kilink before in 1967’s Kilink Istanbul’da, which had a direct sequel in Kilink Uçan Adama Karsi and was followed by two more from the same director (Yilmaz Atadeniz) – Klink: Soy ve Öldür (Kilink: Strip and Kill) and the possibly lost Kilink: Caniler Krali). There was also Cango Korkusuz Adam/Django vs. Kilink, and Sihirbazlar Kralı Mandrake Kiling’in Peşinde/Kilink vs Mandrake. Other Kilink films in the 60s and 70s include Şaşkın Hafiye Kilink’e Karşı, Killing Ölüm Saçıyor, Kilink Sarışın Tehlike, and Killing Kolsuz Kahramana Karşı (though I’m not 100% sure the last one is supposed to be Kilink or just using the original source character Killing!) There is also a lady Kilink film with Dişi Kilink. There are some modern Kilink films as well that perhaps we will get to someday soon. Many of the older films have partial lost elements, and several others were unavailable for years before they finally showed up. When they did, there was a rumor that fellow missing Kilink film Kilink vs Frankenstein still existed somehow, but it was never confirmed, and everyone was trapped in a world of rumors and whispers. Until a reel was found, and what survived was preserved and shared with the world. So thanks to the magical magic of cinemagic, we all get to see the exciting adventures of a guy in a skeleton suit battling Frankenstein and Dr. No! Miracles happen, people! You know this is magical because the print jerks around violently with scratches and marks on many frames, and the audio quality varies from bad to distorted. It’s jam packed with plenty of crackles and hiss acting as their own background diegetic over the stolen soundtrack. It’s like we are receiving an ancient transmission from an alternate Earth, where skeleton-clad criminals ruled the land thieving at will, while still destroying the competition and any random monsters they run into along the way. As is usual, the characters are from a hodge-podge of sources. Kilink is clearly Killing from a more smoothed down era, with clear defined theft goals but also running around with a lady love who is just as thiefalicious as him. He will kill and steal as needed, but often does so to other criminals with less scruples. The villainous Dr. No is more of a Fu Manchu Yellow Peril stereotype than the cinematic Dr. No (played by Joseph Wiseman), who was still a stereotype. He has several goons, with one clearly named Pumanchu which is not only hilarious but also clearly lays out the thought process. He’s the chauffer/main heavy. Other henches include Oko-Moko (who owns or runs Dr. No’s yacht and has his name largely displayed on the side) and Liz, who I believe she is his girl and not his daughter. There is a second group of villains who don’t seem to be referencing anything I recognize and exist only to add drama before they are all destroyed as well. Uh, spoilers? This is writer/director/producer Nuri Akinci’s only brush with the Kilink franchise, but he does have a hefty amount of Turkish films on his resume. Most importantly, he wrote/directed/produced the Turkish version of Columbo, Alo Colombo: Çiglik, which I never knew I needed to exist until now! The villains are up to no good, making trouble in a Turkish neighborhood as they prepare to do something diabolical to lovely lady Mina. Suddenly, Kilink pops out of a garbage can and begins to beat them all up. Not only is this an amazing introduction, but the fight choreography was clearly well thought out and executed, a far cry above the random fist fights you’d often see in these serial-inspired pulp films. Kilink…takes out the trash! And rescues Mina, who is his flame, and soon the pair are stealing Dr. No’s yacht (the Oko-Moko, captained by the above-mentioned Oko-Moko) and off to steal a golden statue. The golden statue was stolen by the second group of criminals, but Dr. No has both a desire of revenge against Kilink and a desire to steal the golden statue for himself so the villain groups cross paths. Dr. No is also secretly rebuilding Frankenstein(‘s Monster, but let’s just pretend I’m typing that out each time) as the big plot against Kilink. Frankenstein needs blood, specifically the blood of young ladies, which is just an excuse for showing young ladies in peril and then scantily clad as they are hooked up to a machine. Liz dresses up as Kilink to abduct these ladies, which both frames Kilink and gives us a lady Kilink outside of the (so far) missing film, 1967’s Dişi Kilink. Can our hero steal the statue, defeat both sets of enemies, defeat Frankenstein, and clear his name of the murders he didn’t do but not the thefts he did do, all in the remaining time and surviving footage? For that you will have to watch yourself! Overall, with a short run time and disintegrating elements, Kilink Frankestayn ve Dr. No’ya Karsi is a fantastic bit of Turkish pulp cheese that will keep you entertained throughout even if there are a few disappointing elements (namely the big title fight is not as action-packed as advertised, or even much of anything!) Recommended to track down and enjoy, who knows when we will see another Kilink film emerge from the shadows! SON! Rated 8/10

Supergirl 1973 Written by Leni Gen Pabalan Directed by Howard Petersen As we have seen time and time again, a lot of amazing Filipino pop cinema is thought lost forever. For most of the films, we can only stare at surviving image stills and posters, read recollections of those lucky enough to see the films, and dream of what might have been. And if we are lucky, occasionally someone finds a beat up 16mm reel where Supergirl fights a giant frog, a lady mad scientist, and zombies! Yes, we are talking about Supergirl from 1973, starring Pinky Montilla as the titular heroine, who gains the powers of Supergirl from a magic ring given to her by a gigantic fairy. Yes, it’s not a straight adaptation, but it’s a fun adaptation that verges on being a horror picture due to some gruesome deaths (including major characters!), stalking zombies, and the monster frog rampage. This is what we are here for, a creation that is familiar yet completely different, with a pop culture life of its own. A coastal town of farmers can’t become an idyllic village because there are just too darn many pirates raiding the village, murdering people and grabbing all the food. Neneng (Pinky Montilla) lives with her blind sister (Mildred Ortega) and younger brother, they are often targeted by the rampaging pirates due to being young kids who are easy to push aside to steal all their hard-grown crops. That is until a gigantic fairy (Barbara Perez) gives Neneng a magic ring that will allow her to turn into Supergirl (it is unclear if Supergirl is an existing concept in this universe or just how this power manifests) and she begins to beat the crap out of pirates. You’d think just beating up pirates would be enough, but this town also has a mad scientist (the amazing Odette Khan) and her daughter living in town. The Scientist has her hunchback (played by frequent Odette Khan costar Enrico Villa) dig up corpses so she can experiment on bringing back the dead. Raising the dead is something the daughter really wants, because her beloved boyfriend Cesar has died. There is a hilarious scene of the Hunchback dragging Cesar’s massive coffin through the roads near Neneng’s farm as all three siblings are depressed and annoyed at the noise preventing them from sleeping. They aren’t annoyed enough to do anything about it, almost as if they get awoken by dragged coffins constantly! The Scientist first tests her revitalizing potion on a dead frog, but it doesn’t seem to work. The Hunchback disposes of the frog…who then pops back to life a little while later, only now with the side effect of rapid growth. Very rapid growth. Soon, a gigantic frog is smashing through the town and chomping down on the people! Everyone is screaming and running, while the blind sister can’t seem to understand that everyone is running away from something and runs right at the frog. Soon she is grabbed by its gigantic tongue, which wraps around her and raises her into the air. Her fiancé arrives and attacks the frog, only to get stomped. At this point I am not sure if Neneng is unaware she is Supergirl or just forgets, but she finally activates her ring and transforms. She then just punches the frog in the nose a few dozen times until it dies. However, it is too late for her sister and her fiancé, who die in each other’s arms. Cesar does get revived, but just wanders away from the Scientist’s house and is found in town. The villagers know he is supposed to be dead and start mobbing the Scientist, who vows revenge by raising the dead. Which means now Supergirl will have to face some of her dead family who died earlier in the film as she tries to save the town and stop all the mad science and zombie action! This was amazing and well worth tracking down, once the premise is set up you know there will be action of a somewhat coherent nature at a regular pace. The visuals are like a checklist of amazing comic book plots mashed together. We have a man in suit giant frog with a tongue wrapping around a screaming woman and giant feet stomping anyone in its way. Enrico Villagive it his all as the creepy hunchback, and has a surprise transformation during the final battle sequences. The film killing off a chunk of its cast only to reanimate them as zombies for the heroine to battle against is a great plot twist, and the black and white film allows for striking visuals combined with effective makeup on the characters to make them look like the dead. One other thing, everyone in the village seems to live on a farm with 99 quadrillion ducks which are always quacking in the background. This means no matter what is happening, there is almost always a bunch of quacking and possibly a herd of ducks running around behind the action. It is hilarious I love it, unintentional worldbuilding that almost makes me want to start a duck farm myself! Pinky Montilla not only was Supergirl, she appeared in other superhero flicks Fight! Batman, Fight! (1973) and Fantastika vs. Wonderwoman (1976). The Batman film is long gone, while a small clip of Fantastika vs. Wonderwoman exists, which means maybe some day we will all get lucky! Pinky made a few horror films such as The Devil’s Daughter (1974) and Sangre Montilla (1975), as well as some drama pictures. Most of her films were from Prima Productions, and by the early 80s she had left the industry. I had long dismissed Supergirl as a movie I’d never get to see, just one of many amazing posters a Pinoy cinema now vanished. Message board posts talk about how the film used to play all the time on afternoon tv (Channel 9 and BBC). Real pop cinemaheads know that the status of film preservation in the Philippines is dire, due to multiple reasons such as the environment not being ideal for film storage, the costs of maintaining such storage, and destruction of media due to political turmoil. So when a gift like this appears, it is your duty to check it out. The 16mm reels were found in 2015 and are surprisingly intact, the obvious missing portions being the credits and occasional chunks of audio. The restoration replaced the audio with instrumentals that occasionally break right back into dialogue mid-sentence if that portion of the film survived. Luckily, the story is developed enough through the visual medium that you would know what is happening even if there was no sound at all, or even with no subtitles. It is truly a Super Miracle, and thanks to the power of Solar just putting it on youtube, it doesn’t even take effort for you to watch it! So go see something you’ve never seen before!
Space Monster Wangmagwi aka 우주괴인 왕마귀 aka Ujugoein Wangmagwi 1967 Written by Byeon Ha-yeong Directed by Kwon Hyeok-jin When you’ve lived in the global pop cinema trenches as long as I have, you’ve heard of hundreds of films that exist only as tattered movie posters, a few existing publicity stills, and if we are lucky, a brief clip that was used as footage in another movie. Every once in a while there is a flash of luck, someone finds a reel in an attic, a film archive realizes something is misnamed, or a film spontaneously appears online, no one knows why. Maybe the film was cursed to not exist unless it did brave deeds in a cinematic afterlife. Whatever the reason, lost films and the occasional miracles are a fact of life. And that’s what we are talking about today. A long time ago, on the internet, there was a story about a film. A Korean giant monster movie that still existed, but for whatever reasons was hidden away in a film archive. All we knew of 1967’s Space Monster Wangmagwi (우주괴인 왕마귀) was a few still images and a story about the film being sued by the producers of Yongary. It wasn’t a secret that the film existed, but we didn’t know anything else about it. All we know was it just wasn’t allowed outside to play! Until it was! Yep, Space Monster Wangmagwi got a bluray release! Finally, this long imprisoned holy grail is there, for everyone to see! To see…that it isn’t very good! Ooh, sick burn on Wangmagwi there. Don’t worry, the film can take it. It’s definitely an odd flick that doesn’t conform to a lot of established structure for giant monster movies while still delivering a lot of giant monster tropes and action. It is one of those odd disappointments, where despite being disappointed, the movie sticks in your mind like some sort of feral child occasionally stabbing you with a tiny knife. Uh, spoilers! Aliens from outer space arrive in our solar system and set a plan in motion to conquer the Earth! This will be accomplished by tossing a monster onto the planet, and Earth will cause the monster to grow to giant size, thus allowing him to smash everything and the aliens win. Look, it’s not a very good plan, but it’s the plan these guys have! The aliens wear suits that make them look like the alien invaders from Invasion of the Neptune Men, and the King Kong influences are so incredibly obvious they might as well have had Wangmagwi battle a tyrannosaur. Or battle Yongary. Hey, now that’s a sequel idea! Someone get Yongary on the phone! What? He ate the phone? The aliens take advantage of a giant hurricane making landfall to disguise their attack. This does not work, they are detected immediately. No matter, the monster will smash everything, let’s stick with the plan, there was no budget for a Plan B! Our human plot involves a couple about to get married, but the man is called away to help with the hurricane evacuations. His fiancé continues to plan for her wedding to take place despite a very large storm and later the very large rampaging monster. Sometimes you have to just give up the deposit and reschedule! Never fear, the monster Wangmagwi takes a liking to her and carries her around like a doll. At some point a homeless child also gets grabbed by the monster, the kid goes full goblin mode and sneaks into the monster’s cavernous ears and nose chambers and just starts stabbing with his pocket knife. These scenes were disgusting but also hilarious. You’ve probably never seen a classic man in suit monster movie where a child is running around inside the monster’s nose. Space Monster Wangmagwi being a product of the early 1960s gives it the freedom to react to the changing landscape of the monster movies. The Gojira series’s dramatic wartime echoes had begun to cool as the movies began to explore more lighter sides. Wangmagwi decided that a lot of lighter asides was what was needed, and just crams them in at odd intervals between scenes of the monster smashing cities. Yep, random comic relief to break up the tension. Just imagine if every quip in a Marvel movie was instead a three minute sketch. The special effects are perfectly fine, I wouldn’t call them bad for the era and there are a lot of miniatures that gets smashed up by the rampaging monster. That’s the stuff I love, tear up them models, Wangmagwi! The biggest problem is the monster itself, it’s just too obviously a guy in a suit with a mask that barely moves. It is on the level of the budget monsters you’d see on very young kit focused tokusatsu shows, where they were trying to stretch things until the end of the season. They at least tried to make part of the mouth wiggle around, which isn’t nothing, but just makes the rest of the lack of movement more obvious. Heck, there is a giant a tongue permanently stuck out. The rigid mask is an odd contrast to the running plot thread of characters climbing around and inside of the monster’s head. The perfect opportunity to incorporate facial movement as characters were literally stabbing the face. Or say the stabbings caused facial paralysis! Speaking of paralysis, most of the characters are one-dimensional and don’t have anything interesting going on. They are just adequate to be positive role models about defending Korea while also being forgettable enough that it doesn’t matter. The main exception is the child, Squirrel (Jeon Sang-cheol), who is an orphan that lives on the edges of society, even breaking into the abandoned house of the heroine while the area is evacuated to gorge on some food. He’s so rough and tumble of a scamp, but also another representative of Korea overcoming struggle to try to rebuild itself after a devastating civil war, and portrayed in a way that just isn’t normally seen. While most of this film is destined to fade away in my mind, I’m always going to remember his character as something real and raw just shoved into the midst of this silly monster movie. One of the big theories for why Space Monster Wangmagwi was disappeared for so long was that they were embarrassed by the movie. It wasn’t very good, it didn’t know what it wanted to be, and Yongary showed up the same year, in full color, and ate its lunch like Godzilla eats Tokyo. How can Wangmagwi compete with a movie where a giant monster bleeds to death from his butt? I’d hide my films, too. In fact, I am hiding them right now. If you solve a series of clues… While I don’t think this is embarrassingly bad, it certainly never lived up to the legend, and not even the shadow of the legend. Not worth hiding away, but not worth celebrating. Wangmagwi instead was transformed from failure into a lost media holy grail, one destined to one day return and give us all hope that finding other lost kaiju films was not only possible, but would happen. Heck, we just might find us Gogola or Tokyo 1960! Okay, probably not. But we did get to see this movie, thanks to the power of someone giving them some money! We all learned something, like when sometimes you unlock Pandora’s Box, the box is just full of boring! And I’ll be there, bored as heck, baby! Rated 4/10

Twenty freaking years? Has it been so long? (Yes, a Willow quote, enjoy) When I first started TarsTarkas.NET back in the days of yore, little did I think that it would still be up 20 years on. I definitely don’t remember agreeing that I should get older as time passes, what a load of bunk! Someone really needs to arrest this Father Time character. It’s almost impossible for something to last 20 years on the internet, but here we are. Standing atop a mountain of website corpses. Beating the odds with weird stuff for cool people. And if you are reading this, you are one of those cool people. Since its inception, TarsTarkas.NET has delivered reviews of global cult and pop cinema, as well as a host of additional reviews, articles, news, podcasts, and plenty of abortive attempts at new projects and features. As much as I could, I tried to get as much and as accurate information as possible in the reviews, turning many of them into long essays with historical information and context. I also strived to be fair to the films, judging them in context with what they are supposed to be and what they represent. As much fun as ripping into awful trash is, it gets repetitive after a while. I mostly just want to talk about the films I love. If I didn’t love these films, I wouldn’t have spent twenty years talking about them. I hope I introduced many people to a whole host of cinematic delights they had never heard of and will spend years chasing down. Heck, I haven’t written a review in far too long, but I’m still hunting down rare and ridiculous movies. If anything, the queue to be written about has just grown exponentially, along with my to-be-watched list. We’ve evolved from hand-coded html to Mambo/Joomla to WordPress, including a variety of themes and looks. We’ve switched hosting providers as the site grew and shrank. There was a lot of behind the scenes stuff I was doing off and on the past two years. Getting the website updated after too long of neglect. That included all sorts or troubleshooting, plug-in swapping, server program installing, manual reading, furious googling, swearing, theme switching (I’ll probably get a new premium theme eventually), wigit error checking, new graphics, solving why some tables look strange on mobile (only 300-ish articles I’ll have to fix that on lol), and more minutia that I continue to swat aside like the flies they are. I’ve become an expert in hosting and web management, hacking together custom plugins, dealing with several lawsuit threats (all garbage but entertaining garbage), updating web services, and getting things mostly fixed. The world of cinema has changed as well we’ve gone through multiple cycles of video store/direct to dvd booms, busts, Netflix, RedBox, the entire MCU, mergers, IP buy-ups, the rise of streaming services, and now those streaming services collapsing under their own costs and mismanagement. Through it all, there has been a lot of cinema gems, a lot of cinema sludge, and a heaping host of boring gray in between. We’ve made lots of friends along the way, and lost a few close ones. RIP Todd Stadtman, you will never be forgotten. A dream is to one day do more things with collaborators, but first I need to find time to do anything at all first! The biggest thing is always time. I had hoped I would have gotten more free time to keep writing, but life just doesn’t want things to be that way at the moment. There are brief periods here and there, but it’s not like before when I could just hang out at a bookstore for a few hours and have two or three reviews written. There’s a toddler running around now that gets the attention first. But he does have school and he does go to sleep. The old old reviews are a little…rough. My writing has improved over the decades and hopefully hasn’t degraded too much during my hiatus. I have done some writing, mostly fiction. Some may be available someday, and if I get free time, you can occasionally find me in the SomethingAwful forums’s Thunderdome writing contests (usually getting near last place, but not always!) I’m also prepping some new reviews, which I think I have promised before, but I really am. There’s been multiple Godzilla films that came out since we hit the pause button! Heck, 2024 had TWO Godzilla films!! There are multiple streaming and web shows! It’s a new golden age. Plenty of weird new films have come out that deserve bigger audiences. Not only that, several films that were basically lost films have shown up in the past few years. All sorts of cool and weird stuff. As we head into the unknown future, might as well learn about some cool films! Sure, the web dying and a grass-roots effort to try to bring back interesting sites helps motivate me to keep going. But I’d be doing it even if that groundswell wasn’t happening. I just like doing it. And I want to keep doing it. Twenty years is just the beginning!

Do you like swords? Do you like thrills? Do you like boutique Blu-Ray companies and freshly scanned 2K prints of obscure Taiwanese fantasy Snow White films filled with monsters and mayhem? Sure, we all do, but now you can get all those great flavors in one simple package with the Thrilling Bloody Sword Blu-Ray from Gold Ninja Video! I’ve seen the print, and it is freaking beautiful! Much much better than the blurry and washed out VHS and tv rips that are circulating around the web, ones that we ourselves used in our review of Thrilling Sword way back in the long long time ago. And how have I seen the print before the official release? Because I’m in the official release! Yes, Thrilling Sword has a commentary track with yours truly, Tars Tarkas, giving color commentary and interesting factoids along with Gold Ninja Video founder Justin Decloux! Somehow, I found time to get this done despite having a toddler running around demanding all my time, because this release is just awesome and Thrilling Sword/Thrilling Bloody Sword/神劍動山河 deserves a much wider audience! You got seven generals shrunk down to small size (sometimes they even have all seven actors in the scene, but usually not), a queen giving birth to a ball of flesh, a guy turned into a bear, Satan, giant monsters, frog men, definitely not Rodan, totally not King Ghidorah, unsafe flames, trippy visuals, a guy with a butt on his head, phantom limbs, and much much more! This is a movie that when you describe it to people, they don’t believe you! Now they can not believe you but in 2K! It’s a steal at only $20! Plus, you can always rag on me forever for whatever minor error I made in the commentary track! But I guarantee it is 99% correct. Just look at the beauty of it! ORDER IT TODAY! Limited to 800 copies! NOTE: THIS IS A PRE-ORDER. BLU-RAYS WILL START SHIPPING ON NOVEMBER 22, 2021 Watch a Teaser Here A NEW 2K SCAN OF THE ONLY SURVIVING 35MM PRINT DOUBLE NOTE: If you selected the Subscription Perk from the Gold Ninja Video Indiegogo campaign this will be included, so you don’t need to order it, and it will ship when it becomes available. There’s nothing like THRILLING BLOODY SWORD, a head-spinning slice of Taiwanese psychotronic cinema that builds a fantasy action movie out of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, impossible fight scenes, and a cavalcade of monsters that include a cyclops, a pterodactyl and Satan himself! A comet impregnates a queen. She gives birth to a fleshy egg. In disgust, the king tosses the egg in the river. Seven little people stumble onto the egg. They stab it with a knife and find a cute baby inside – who grows up to be a beautiful princess. One day, she runs into a prince fighting a multi-headed dragon, and of course, the two royals fall in love. Unfortunately, a group of dastardly wizards want to keep them apart, and they’ll use every creature at their disposal to do it! Previously available in only a washed-out video transfer, Gold Ninja Video is proud to present this super colourful film in a new 2K Scan taken from the only-surviving 35mm print commissioned exclusively for this release. In Mandarin with burnt-in English subtitles. SPECIAL FEATURES *Commentary Track by World Pop Cinema Scholar Tars Tarkas and Justin Decloux *He Wrote Every Punch: The Career of Writer/Director Chang Hsin-Yi *A Beginner’s Guide to Psychotronic Taiwanese Cinema *Bonus Feature Film: Incredible Kung Fu Mission (1979) I said to ORDER IT TODAY!
Todd Stadtman passed away on January 9th, 2021 Todd was a musician, writer, movie lover, and cofounder with me of the Infernal Brains Podcast. Most importantly, he is my friend and I’m going to miss him dearly. Many people knew Todd from his long career as a musician, but I really am not someone who listens to a lot of music, so I knew Todd mostly from the cinema aspect. That’s what I’ll be focusing on here. I first met Todd back around 2007-8 when I was still in graduate school, I had stumbled across an old program for a Jane Bond film festival and googled some of the titles of this fascinating genre I had never heard of, and one of the top hits was this website from Todd Stadtman called The Lucha Diaries. He was attempting to watch every Santo movie (which he managed), and then after that expanded to more Mexican cinema, and then funky films from across the globe. The writing was great, and he lived close by (I was in Santa Cruz at the time while he lived in San Francisco) so I shot him an email. I don’t do that often, and it’s even rarer when the person writes back, but Todd did, and soon we were trading emails and eventually met up in person at a bar in the Mission called Docs Clock. I’m normally very shy and reserved so I brought along my wife and we ended up chatting for hours. I’m not 100% certain but I think this is when we also then went to a burrito place and Todd’s amazing wife Liza dropped by, but that may have been a later time at the same burrito place. For once, meeting someone you met on the internet didn’t mean that you were meeting up with crazed killers and we hit it off well enough to start making plans to go see movies together. Todd and I became semi-regular movie buddies, whenever a festival had something weird or a revival theater had something cool we’d see if we could meet up. We also had just some days to hang out or go out on double dates with our wives. We don’t make a lot of friends easily so it was nice to have another set of cool people to spend time with. Todd was personable and easy to get along with, his boundless enthusiasm for cinema winning him many fans. Todd was an active participant in the Drive-In Mob on Twitter, a movie watch-along that I was rarely home in time to join in, but I enjoyed seeing the commentary run by on my feed as most of the films were familiar favs. Todd and I created and cohosted a podcast called the Infernal Brains. At this point it was both of our first forays into podcasting, so we had to learn everything as we went. The first few episodes have some questionable quality audio, but we were both working our best to make it sound as good as we could. Beyond skype calls, some episodes were recorded in Todd’s kitchen as we searched for the best audio quality we could muster (We tried both a shared microphone and literally sitting across from the table from each other recording on our own laptops!) We went from having a few notes about the films to literal stacks and stacks of papers, it was like we were preparing for finals before every podcast. We took the “brains” part seriously, and there is no way I would have sounded anywhere near as clear and prepared as I was without his help. You might also notice most episodes are 80% Todd talking, which was by design as Todd had the gift of gab and could just go on endlessly about what he loved, with me occasionally steering him back on topic. The Infernal Brains podcast is one of the best things on TarsTarkas.NET, and I’m eternally sad I just got too busy with night school classes to keep up with it. Todd kept up the enthusiasm with his other podcasts he cohosted, including the Taiwan Noir podcast, which is another must-listen. Whenever I’d find a new weird movie or stumble across a formerly lost film suddenly appeared on the internet, I’d think how Todd would like it. We traded movies a lot. I mean a lot. I literally have a stack of vcds/dvds on my table that I was slowly transferring to external drives (very slowly), and Todd’s handwriting is on some of them. A good chunk of the movies on this site and FourDK are films we traded with each other. This is where Shaitani Dracula went from just a weird disk I owned to a cult movie phenomenon. Through Todd I met DurianDave, who was another cool movie guy who knew a lot about older Cantonese and Taiwanese cinema, especially the Jane Bond films and stars Connie Chan and Josephine Siao. Todd and I was also part of a loose alliance of cool movie bloggers called the Mysterious Order of the Skeleton Suit, which might have been the last of the old style movie blogger leagues. The internet has seemingly become just a few major websites and blogging is on the outs, which makes Todd’s loss even bigger, as he was still active on his site. Todd and I shared movie tastes but we each had our particular favorite genres. There was still enough overlap that we’d both like the same films. Todd announced he was starting Die, Danger, Die, Die, Kill! shortly after I met him, and it was great to see (and read) him at full writing blast. That was around the time we were both at our most prolific of site updates, which means that we were in danger of picking the same obscure film to review. Once, I had just gotten done watching a movie only to hop on and see Todd had just published a review of it. When I brought this up with Todd, he admitted he had a similar experience. When searching for a lot of topics related to the genres we love, the top two results are almost always from Todd and my sites. This became a running joke between us about how little coverage the films we watched got in English language publications, but has also become a thing that other people have told me, that they were interested in the same types of films or actors/directors, but kept only finding articles from Todd or I. We had some fun with being similar on occasions, as my tastes cast a wider net even into mainstream stuff, a response from Todd resulted in us going back and forth reviewing different versions of Puss in Boots movies. Todd and I shared the philosophy that these weren’t terrible movies to mock and feel better than, but they were great fun on their own. That movies were good when masked wrestlers fight Dracula or Taiwanese kaiju rampage or funky space ladies invade Earth. Todd translated his love of genre cinema into a book, and Funky Bollywood is essential reading for any gonzo cinema fan. I lost touch with Todd in the past few years which is something I’ll always regret. As I got too busy for some projects, we still regularly went to go see the various RiffTrax Live events together at the downtown SF theaters. Eventually, the theaters stopped carrying the events, and by then Todd had moved to Oakland. It was just too hard to coordinate me getting off work in the South Bay, driving up to SF, and then finding a theater and then getting Todd back on BART and to Oakland before BART closed. I always assumed we’d just figure something out later. We even emailed a bit back in early 2020 to try to meet up, but by then it was March, my mom was coming into town, and my wife was pregnant with our first child, so I thought I’d just push it until April. Then COVID happened with the lockdowns, and going in public while you have a pregnant wife was a thing I wasn’t going to do. Todd moved to Brooklyn later that year when his wife got a good job offer, and even after I found out, I didn’t think it was the end of the world, he had family around and I’d still be able to hit him up online. I wish I had ended things with one last meet up before he left. I found out he died due to a memorial post by Miguel Rodriguez, as I hadn’t logged into Facebook for years and that was were the updates on his health were. Todd made me a better writer because he pushed me to do better just through sheer enthusiasm and his own good writing. He made me a better person just due to being such a good person. No one ever had a bad word to say about Todd, he was friendly to everyone. Todd had lots of different circles of friends, I was just a small part of one, but he made a big impression on me, and Todd Stadtman will always live on in me. I cried when I heard the news. I’ve been crying off and on all week. I cried when I wrote this. I’ll still be sad for a good while afterwards. I’ll probably be misty eyed every time I see War of the Gargantuas. But I’m determined to make him proud. It was hard to write this, it made it more a finality that Todd won’t be there to answer my message. Even while I was finishing writing this, someone dropped me a message about a certain Indian film director showing up with more work that Todd would have jumped on immediately. Todd led a full life, and I’m going to be as much like Todd as I can and accomplish as many goals as I can. He was very prolific with his writing, not only are there a ton of sites with articles to read, he has novels and some finished stories that have yet to be published according to a post of his. Hopefully I’ll get to read them too someday. I love you Todd, you were the cool big brother I never had. I’m sorry we didn’t get one last meetup, I’m sorry my son will never get to meet one of the men who influenced him on his dad’s weirdo hobbies. You better have access to all the cool lost films wherever you are, or I’m going to have to kick some afterlife butt one day. Things you can do – Todd’s wife Liza posted that you can express your condolences by donating in his name to one of the following charities: ACLU Planned Parenthood Southern Poverty Law Center And don’t settle for whatever is on Netflix, go seek out cool movies that are hard to find but looks cool, subtitles be damned.
You’ve probably noticed things have been pretty quiet here lately at TarsTarkas.NET. There’s a good reason, which is there is now a baby Tars Tarkas running around! Of course that means I don’t got a bunch of free time to watch ridiculous and cool movies from around the globe and offer exciting write-ups about them. But TarsTarkas.NET is not going anywhere, it’s just in slowmo mode for a while. There are a bunch of almost finished reviews sitting around, and eventually some will get pushed out and new ones written. Do I have a time schedule for this? Nope! But it’s going to happen…someday! Until then, we got a big archive of reviews and I still have time to yell at idiots on Twitter. Until things get back to a bit of normal, have fun!

Snow Monster aka 大雪怪 aka Da Xue Guai 2019 Written by Sheng Fan Zhang and Pian Jia Leng Directed by Huang He NetFlix isn’t the only streaming platform pumping out a ton of their original movies to drive up views, China has several big streaming companies and they are all creating their own content in a bet to win sole control of views. Streaming platform Youku has greenlit a ton of original content, but the films of interest to us are several that are basically SyFy Channel original movies! They got giant snakes, giant alligators, sea monsters, the list goes on and on. But most importantly, they have Snow Monster, which is pretty much King Kong in snow demon form. Also there are ice sharks! Yes, Snow Monster fights the ice sharks! This is some of what we call pretty amazing stuff. The Snow Monster himself is not a gorilla or even an ape. It appears to be a huge furry satyr, complete with a long tail. The fur is snow white, the hands only have three fingers and a thumb, the legs are bent like goat legs, and the head is adorned with two large goat horns, one of which is partially snapped off. The monster himself is a mix of guy in suit and CGI depending on the scene needs, but more often than not he is just a guy standing there reacting to what is going on. This makes it sort of charming in a low budget cinema sort of way. Of course there are no English subtitles, but at TarsTarkas.NET, we don’t need no stinking subtitles! The plot is pretty easy to follow, the monsters don’t need to talk, and while we have all seen this before, and it’s fun to see it again done different with the shadow of the original sprawling over it. Part of the film has the same trouble the Peter Jackson King Kong did, in that we spend a bunch of time running around with monsters that aren’t the giant monster of the title. I don’t know how much planning you need for a Snow Monster movie but there are like 25 people credited. If this keeps up with the other Youku films I got on the docket than I will keep you posted, otherwise I would advise getting a job as a film planner as they seem to be giving them away! I identified who I could in the cast, but as I don’t know what the names of the characters they are playing are, I’m just going to refer to them by their real names. Since this is a harder to find movie (unless you are specifically looking for it), this will be more of a recap review. Snow Monster does keep the monster in the winter wonderland where it exists instead of having a sequence where it is brought back to the city to cause trouble. That’s obviously a cost consideration, but it also points to the reality of transporting a gigantic monster out of a hostile environment and then into an urban environment without their being any sort of issues, something most of the Kong films just handwave away. Snow monster, snow sharks, monster birds, a random dinosaur skeleton that seems put there because there were big skeletons in Kong: Skull Island except those were Kong’s family and here it makes no sense unless Snow Monster’s dad was a tyrannosaur. It’s Snow Monster, baby! Instead of an uncharted island, the monsters here are in a hidden valley deep in the mountains. It is a lost land accessible only by ancient maps and secret clues, to the point where they have to hire an Indiana Jones type (played by Tim Wu) to read the map! Don’t worry, he’s cool, when we first are introduced to him, he’s running a curio shop and beating up the many many shoplifters known to frequent curio shops. The film first opens with a research van driving around the mountainous region, with actress Zhang Yongxian playing the head of the expedition. However, their van manages to park right on top of where the Snow Monster was napping in the snow, and when it stands up the van gets knocked around and communication is lost. The hero guide played by Tim Wu is the ex-boyfriend of Zhang Yongxian, adding another layer to the rescue attempt. The entire thing seems sponsored by a biotech company that has an entire command room filled with communication satellites and expeditions across the globe. Having worked in similar places, the amount of money spent on this command room is insane, but it’s also just one less useless executive’s bonus. So maybe it’s not that ridiculous… We see Snow Monster’s hands come up in this sequence with an almost identical animation to when we first see King Kong in Kong: Skull Island, which must be a coincidence. Yeah, that’s the ticket! Tim Wu will lead a very heavily armed rescue team that is constantly pointing their guns randomly in the backgrounds of scenes where there is nothing going on. There also seems to have no medical personal (??!!) despite this being some sort of biotechnology conglomerate funding all of this. The rescue mission doesn’t just go for a drive, instead they need to start following an old map and press stones that have other stone pillars come out of the ground and booby traps get sprung, as we’re suddenly doing Goonies all up in my Snow Monster! How did the van drive through all of this? Never explained, maybe they just brought pieces of the van and then built it on the other side… The rescue group all fall down a giant pit and discover a bunch of old human skeletons there, and all the skeletons with suspicious massive head trauma. The cause is soon revealed to be thousands of birds with jagged razor beaks! Weirdly similar to creatures in Kong: Skull Island that were more background creatures. Despite the huge amount of automatic weapons fire, many members of the valiant militarized rescue team are killed, including a few characters we saw for half a second before they were killed! Not that guy! At least we have an excuse to thin out the cast…to a slightly smaller rescue team filled with militarized goons obviously up to no good, making trouble in Snow Monster’s neighborhood. As they make it into the snowy mountain valley, they discover the moon looks much larger here (are they closer to the moon by being up so high in the atmosphere? Is this a parallel world?) and also the Aurora Borealis is going on. yes, the Aurora Borealis. At this time of year. At this time of day. In this part of the country. Localized entirely in a mysterious mountain region where a giant snow satyr runs around. But at least you can see it. You can also see a random Tyrannosaurus Rex just lying on top of the snow. Don’t worry, many of the surviving military guys point their guns at both the skeleton and the empty snow to make sure everyone is safe. They do manage to find random pieces of the van. But then… ICE SHARK ATTACK!!! As in, giant sharks who swim in the snow start jumping up and eating guys whole! Also these sharks have lots of random spikes on them because, why not have a bunch of random spikes on your ice sharks? But don’t call them icicles or ice picks, they are ice shark spikes, it’s totally different! So if the ice sharks are eating people whole, what ate the T-rex that left it’s skeleton intact and laid out like a museum exhibit? Do we got an anal-retentive ice shark? The rescue team eventually realizes they are now in a weird version of Tremors and get on some rocks to try to stop the sharks, but one shark leaps into the air to chomp the main characters on the rock…until the ice shark stops in mid-air. Because a giant Snow Monster is holding it! We finally get a good look at the Snow Monster, he’s a big furry satyr covered in white fur as described above. The Snow Monster smacks the ice shark against a rock a bit then starts eating it. Ice Shark sushi, yum! Dinner is going well until a military moron accidentally shoots Snow Monster, which makes him mad. So now all the military idiots starts shooting at it instead of just throwing the moron forward and running away. We’ve seen this game before, the bullets do nothing but make Snow Monster madder. The rescue team has a missile launcher, something you always need while on wilderness rescue missions. The guy who shoots it misses, and the missile causes an avalanche! This knocks everyone out, but they awaken…in a village? Of elves???? These people have big pointy ears! Also the imagery is fairly heavily borrowing from American Indian tribes. The group is Tim Wu, the comic relief guy, a jumpy military guy, and a few others. They are tied up and the elves are cutting their feet open to drain blood, but Time Wu cuts himself free and takes an elf hostage, at least until a kick-butt warrior chick takes him out. Before things get too intense, the lady survivor from the van Zhang Yongxian appears among the elves. Yes, we’ve jumped into Return of the Jedi. They elves are led by a lady priestess played by actress Li Ruoxi. The rest of the military guys aren’t with the elves, they are still in the snow with the guy who recruited Tim Wu. They argue a bit before the guy reveals the rescue attempt is just a ruse for his real plan, which is getting DNA from the Snow Monster to do something or other. That seems to impress the military guys enough to not shoot him, despite the fact that it is now night time and they didn’t bring any tents. The elves do a ritual for the Snow Monster. The comic relief guy has the hots for the lady warrior and also for the Priestess Li Ruoxi. Basically he’s a walking ball of hormones while Tim Wu and Zhang Yongxian awkwardly begin to rekindle their romance. The elves call for Snow Monster, who even joins in with the elves laughing at the comic relief guy as he falls backwards in fear. Snow Monster even allows Tim Wu to touch him. But then… MISSILE ATTACK!! A missile slams into Snow Monster and explodes! Another missile flies by and explodes near the people performing the ritual. The remaining military guys march in and declare their intention to get what they came for and kill any Snow Monster who tries to stop them. The elves are not too happy with this, but the military guys decide to machine gun down many of the native people, because why not commit genocide when you are also murdering the last member of a fantastic species? The expedition organizer pulls out a huge huge gun and shoots the Snow Monster with a big electric dart that shocks the monster. The military grabs the elf priestess Li Ruoxi, the elf warrior lady, Tim Wu, Zhang Yongxian, and comic relief guy in a scheme to lure the Snow Monster out. The jumpy military guy is noticeably not a hostage, but he also was noticeably upset at the genocidal massacre and did not participate. ICE SHARK ATTACK!!! Except the leader pulls out his big big gun again and shocks the snow, this kills all the ice sharks and we just see blood smears appear beneath the snow. Which was a pretty cool effect even though this made no sense why none of the humans were hurt with this powerful of a weapon. Ice shark attack alarm rescinded. But the villains do shoot Priestess Li Ruoxi, which angers Snow Monster enough he returns to be sad and then very very mad at the military guys....

In the Shadow of the Moon 2019 Written by Gregory Weidman and Geoffrey Tock Directed by Jim Mickle In the Shadow of the Moon is a fun little time travel murder mystery that gets too convoluted for its own good. In 1988, three seemingly random people drop dead, blood and their brains leaking out of their face. Officer Locke (Boyd Holbrook) manages to insert himself into the case as part of his bid to make detective. His partner Maddox (Bokeem Woodbine) is less enthused about the extra work, and brother-in-law and current detective Holt (Michael C. Hall) doesn’t want his sister’s husband messing up his first big case. Soon it is evident the dead have all been attacked, and a mysterious woman (Cleopatra Coleman) is responsible. After a chase she winds up dead, but who she is or how she ended up with a police service revolver bullet in her hand despite no officer shooting that night remains a mystery. The only problem is she shows up again 9 years later alive and killing again, and will keep reappearing as an increasingly obsessed and isolated Locke attempts to solve the mystery of who she’s killing and how she’s doing it. Things are best when we don’t know anything and are caught up in what is going on. There is a clue in the very beginning, but it becomes obvious really fast what is going on and why, and once you figure that out all the rest of the twists unravel in your mind and it just becomes a waiting game for them to happen on screen. Speaking of mysterious deaths, the writers just go and fridge Locke’s wife by having her die in childbirth, which he misses part of due to the time traveling killer. Locke’s estrangement from his family as the years go on mean we drop most of the supporting cast that hasn’t died by other means, forcing Boyd Holbrook to largely carry things on his own. While he isn’t bad, sometimes it good to have more people to interact with for a film instead of it just being a succession of things that happen to Locke. As an aside, I have no idea what kind of accent Michael C. Hall was trying to do, it is all over the map and never approaches Philadelphia, the city where the film takes place. Maybe he was also a secret time traveler, going on adventures for so long he adopted the local language and then struggles to return back to English upon his homecoming. Finally we got a real ending to Dexter, and I don’t think it is cheap at all to use this easy joke, so there! As the film continues on, the eventual twists become more predictable to the point of the film explicitly explaining them in voiceover narration in case you weren’t paying attention. While that is interesting, it’s not exactly the best way to convey things in a visual medium. Add that to the weird extra mile the time traveler goes to kill the targets and characters outside of Locke just not caring that weird stuff is going on, and it seems like a bunch of ideas that needed another draft to tighten it all up. In the first segment there is an older police higher-up who seems to know things are weird, but he never returns even when the actual weird stuff starts happening 9 years later. There is abortive attempts to tie in police murders of black suspects (the lady doing the time travel is black, Locke is white) but that goes away after one time period, and we spend all of that time period following the cop who killed the black lady, so, yeah. Okay. The time travel is explained a bit but they never really get into a lot of the time travel rules beyond some things involving the phasing of the moon. We don’t even get an Avengers: Endgame-style easy explanation for how things work, I can’t even be sure that it is following the rules set forth by that movie or if the woman doesn’t time travel even in the alternate future things will revert back or not. In the Shadow of the Moon is a Netflix film and fills a good role of a nice little scifi B movie, but one of the good things of a mystery is the mystery, and In the Shadow of the Moon is just too eager to solve that for us, damn the consequences, full moon time travel ahead! It’s good enough to not discourage the curious from watching, but not quite good enough to recommend to people. And I so wanted to, the concept is great, but the execution is just flawed enough to break the loop. Strictly for the genre lovers. Rated 6/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 21 – Go!Go!ゴジラくん#12「飛べ!未来へ向かって」 aka ゴジばん December 31, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi King Ghidorah makes his grand entry into the Godziban story line proper and causes a whole heap of trouble! Keep in mind King Ghidorah’s puppet has been seen in the stage play that was put on in the special event episode, but that is not entirely canon to the current story line even though it could easily fit in before the actual show as where Mothra came from. So maybe it is canon. It’s canon! If Santa Kaiju can be canon, this is canon. Canon! Not only do we got King Ghidorah, but there are some other new faces in this episode, which turned out to be the final Godziban episode. Of the season? Of all time? We will wait to see. Until then, it looks like March of Godzilla 2019 in 2020 has come to an end. But don’t fret, because March of Godzilla 2020 will be starting up soon enough! Godzilla marching will never die as long as they keep producing more and more Godzilla stuff to keep marching on! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun Minya is still taking care of Baby Rodan, giving him food and trying to get him strong. He’s basically doing for Rodan what Godzilla-kun was doing for him in earlier episodes. Godzilla-kun and Little stop by (Little tossing a folded leaf around like a paper airplane) to check on the pair. Little asks about flying, and Godzilla-kun thinks about flying using his atomic breath to power it (like in Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster) and then laughs as he dismisses the concept! But the message is clear…Minya must teach Rodan how to fly. Even though Minya can’t fly! So expect a lot of puppets falling to Earth! Next we see Minya and Rodan at the top of a big cliff. Minya demonstrates flying by launching the paper/leaf airplane off the cliff into the sky. Rodan tries to fly…and hovers for about a second before dropping like a rock. Minya runs down to go get him and carries Rodan all the way back up the mountain. Minya is a pretty good dad, but he should be, as he had a pretty good dad himself. That’s been consistently one of Godzilla’s best traits. Rodan tries again, fails again, and Minya hauls him back up the cliff again. Rodan is apprehensive about trying again. Minya is trying to encourage him when suddenly they hear the cries of “Dorat dorat dorat dorat dorat!” Yes, the Dorats are back, who you may remember tried to eat Baby Rodan’s egg last time we saw them. The Dorats are still jerks, and are back to eat Rodan now that h’es big enough to make a full meal for the trio. They try to float the Baby Rodan away, but Minya grabs him. So they start blasting Minya with electricity! Again and again until eventually Minya is scorched and collapses. Rodan begins to panic and desperately tries to wake him. The drama going on here! Then the fear becomes blinding white hot rage as Rodan takes flight and smashes through the villains, knocking them around as he swoops and soars among their ranks, causing them to all crash into the ground. Minya is back awake with Rodan returns, and they are both happy at the victory and Rodan’s new flying ability. The Dorats aren’t going to go away that easily. They get mad and decide to get even, thus they merge into King Ghidorah! It’s a truly massive King Ghidorah, larger than all the other puppets on the show combined! King Ghidorah floats in the sky as Minya and Rodan shake in fear, then King Ghidorah blasts them with the electric breath rays. Good ol’ Minya still protects Rodan despite now being blasted with even more powerful blasts than before. The two are helpless…until Godzilla-kun is there! Godzilla-kun charges…despite King Ghidorah being 20 times his size! He is not detoured by being blasted, Godzilla-kun jumps and grabs onto the neck of King Ghidorah’s central head! He tries chocking and scratching it, but the other two heads clamp on to Godzilla-kun’s head and tail and tosses him into a cliffside. Godzilla-kun gets up, still determined to fight even though it is fruitless and he’s going to die. But behind him…Minya and Rodan got every other kaiju in town with them! Little, Baby Mothra, Anguirus, Baragon, even Gorosaurus, Manda, Kumonga, and Varan who we’ve not even seen before on this program. Somehow Minya and Rodan got new characters to join the show in order to help their friend. That’s some pretty effecient help! This is amazing!!! It’s Godziban: Endgame! Or Destroy All Monsters, yes yes, but that means I can’t make my jokes! They all charge at King Ghidorah….and then it ends. Godzilla-kun talks directly to the camera to thank everyone for watching the show. We are either taking a series break or this is the end of the line, but we go out on something amazing and this show rules so hard I hope it continues. Either way it is an amazing journey. We end with the full version of the theme song playing to some of the highlights of the season while drawings by Onigiri and シウ*単行本発売中 flank the action. Here’s hoping there is more Godziban in our future, whenever that may be! Until then, March of Godzilla 2019 in 2020 concludes, but keep on marching, people! Okay, I lied, there will be one more March of Godzilla 2019 in 2020 article, because I’m going to make a character guide for the show, but as that is a guide and not an article we gotta say goodbye here! (and there might be a few movie reviews in between depending on how lazy I am in posting the backlog of completed reviews!) Rated 10/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 20 – Go!Go!ゴジラくん#11「メリゴジ　ゴジラが聖夜にやってきた」 aka ゴジばん December 24, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Have a Merry Godziban Christmas!! (We got to this weeks late, but who cares!) March of Godzilla 2019 in 2020 continues with the special Christmas episode of Godziban, which like all Godziban episodes are strange and awesome! We got Christmas graphics! We got Kaiju Christmas! We got kaiju in antlers and red noses, we got kaiju in Santa clothes, we got trees, we got presents, we got joy, we got Megalon upset at all this joy. These are done by the artist who does the Jet Jaguar shorts, who I believe is Onigiri though there are some other artists credited on the show (and the graphics we see at the end of the episode are obviously in a different artist’s style!) Go! Go! Godzilla-kun The three Godzilla Brothers read about Santa Claus. They discuss it a bit and then realize that someone is leaving presents for kid fans of kaiju, ShoGoji must know something. So they go spy and find ShoGoji loading presents into a sleigh! ShoGoji admits it and invites the brothers to help pack presents and prepare for the journey to give gifts to children. Baragon and Anguirus are also there, dressed up as reindeer with fake felt antlers and big red noses. The Godzillas all dress up in Santa suits with hats and coats. This is all canon, people. 100% canon. Godzilla is Santa. It is real! How can it be real? May I remind you of The Santa Clause? When Santa dies, the killer becomes the new Santa. Thus, ShoGoji killed Santa, and became the new Santa! Complete with his magic cane! ShoGoji then starts to tell a story, it’s about the girl way back in the original GEMSTONE contest pilot! The young girl who wanted a pet and found the Kamatte Godzilla left alone in a box, which she then picked up and loved. It turns out her parents didn’t love it as much as her and banned it from the house, so the girl had to keep the poor pet in an abandoned building nearby with a lot of straw and a dog house. She named it Kamachi and would bring it food, but one day it was very cold, and Kamachi DIED! Yes, Kamachi is dead! They killed Kamachi! They killed a child’s pet! Losing a pet you love is traumatic, and here it is, in Godziban form. How many shows do you know that feature a beloved child’s pet die? The kid is obviously upset that her beloved pet is dead. There are shots of the girl crying and holding her dead pet as she walks despondantly through town, while children are at their homes having Christmas fun (and there is a big K on the Christmas tree because they are worshippers of Kaiju, not Christ!) The dichotomy is amazing! Also amazing is there is this entire kaiju-worshipping background religion happening that is just flavor to the story and not the actual story! This is great world-building, of course children growing up in a world with real monsters would love monsters more than usual. Monster rule! The sleigh rushes to Earth as the child collapses crying in the middle of some sort of walkway late at night. The images of Godzilla-kun, Minya, Little, and ShoGoji dressed in Santa costumes appear before her. They all bow and she thinks she’s freaking out and seeing things. Godzilla-kun introduces everyone, and then ShoGoji uses his magic cane to zap Kamachi’s body. It is brought over to the kaiju and revived and grown bigger! Kamachi is back alive! The kid can hug Kamachi again! At least for now, Kamachi has to go live with the kaiju. The Godzilla give the kid a gift before they depart. Next we get a montage of the kaiju appearing in random bedrooms of kids who are kaiju fans and gifting them presents. Even Hedoji and Hedochi get in on the gift giving action! And are dressed as Santa! This is canon, btw. The Smog Monster gives gifts to children. After the monsters have handed out all of their gifts, they wish everyone a Merry Christmas! So you better have had a Merry Kaiju Christmas in 2019! Or whatever holiday you celebrate. At the end we see the kid and her gift, a Kamachi keychain! Kamachi will be with her always. The final content is a different graphic toon with the Mothra twin fairies and the Mothra larvae also dressed as Santa, and the evil triplet fairy and Battra wearing purple Santa outfits. Grown up Mothra is in the picture as well despite not making an in-puppet appearance yet, but it counts enough to be added to our character list one I get around to making it! The credits are new as well for the second week in a row, it is the kids from the Christmas story we saw earlier dressed in Christmas costumes all doing the Godzilla-kun dance! Including the young actress who played Kamachi’s owner and was the original doer of the dance for the closing credits. This show is pretty darn fun, and fully embracing the weirdness makes it amazingly memorable. Rated 10/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 19 – Go!Go!ゴジラくん#10「GvsG/僕はゴジラくんだ!」【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん December 13, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Part of the title of this Go! Go! Godzilla-kun is called GvsG, so you know what that means! Gorath will fight Gamera! Wait, I’ve just received word from the Judges that this is not the case. Gamera will not fight Gorath. Refunds will be given to all those who prepurchased tickets minus the unrefundable service fee. The service fee exceeds the cost of the tickets, so you will be charged $33.00 for each refund. Thank you for your patronage! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun Little is just strolling along with Gigan appears! Gigan does his usual shtick about wanting to be the best monster of them all. Little is so enamored he grabs onto Gigan’s claw! He asks Gigan an question and flashes his huge sparkly eyes at Gigan, who has to really struggle to strike Little. But he does! Noooo! Little is not detoured by some physical abuse and quickly returns to grabbing Gigan’s claw. Gigan smacks him again! Noooo! A beaten up Anguirus and Baragon crawl to where Godzilla-kun and Minya are sleeping. They explain what is going on before they pass out. We see Godzilla-kun’s eyes snap open. Pretty cool shot that also mirrors classic Godzilla shots. Gigan smacks Little again! I’m no big fan of Little Godzilla, but this is complete overkill. Time for Gigan to Giget smacked! Godzilla-kun arrives! Gigan mispronounces his name, and it looks like Godzilla-kun has promised not to fight. Gigan smacks Godzilla-kun! Then Gigan smacks Godzilla-kun again! Gigan smacks Godzilla-kun a third time! Gigan declares him pathetic and begins to leave, but Godzilla-kun just has his anger boil over, his plates glow and he blasts fire in the air! This gets Gigan’s attention, just in time for Godzilla-kun to do a spin and tail attack, knocking Gigan across the field and into a mountain (leaving a Gigan-shaped hole in the rock!) Gigan gets up and charges at Godzilla-kun! But Gigan runs over a hole and falls into the Earth, and a rolling Anguirus rolls over the hole and covers it up! Gigan is now trapped beneath the earth by the two characters he beat up last episode! Revenge is sweet and using your special powers to defeat a bully is even sweeter! Everyone laughs at Gigan, who rants underground! One day he might pop up again, but for now it’s the power of teamwork! While it was fun seeing Gigan as a jerk, this was obviously a single story that was stretched out to two episodes. Still, the filler was all perfect Godziban material, so it all turned out fine in the end. Hedoji Hedoji and Hedochi are walking by what look like gigantic mossy trees (did they go to Kashyyyk? Endor? Middle Earth?) Hedochi asks a question which causes a bunch of internal strife in Hedoji before he can answer. Hedochi even says more before Hedoji finally answers. Eventually Hedoji reasons out an acceptable answer, but Hedochi easily counters it! Hedoji freaks out so much the visual turns into photo negative! New closing credits???? New dancers to the Godzilla-kun song! Two actresses in mod style clothing having fun doing the dance! They’ve been on the show before, one was the office woman who had Kamatte Godzilla as a pet (Rino Shimomura), the other was one of the warrior girls who fought over Kamatte Godzilla (Marie Katsura)! Godziban still having fun, and next episode is a doozy! Until then, March of Godzilla 2019 in 2020 continues! Rated 7/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 18 – Go!Go!ゴジラくん#9「宇宙から来たあいつ」 aka ゴジばん December 8, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Don’t you hate it when you are just having a normal day eating baked sweet potatoes and then some jerk comes along and declares he is going to challenge you to a fight? Gigan is that jerk, and he arrives in Godziban land with a mission to prove he is the best around. Unfortunately for everyone, what Gigan wants to be the best at is beating everyone else up! This episode also has the beginnings of the Christmas graphics that will continue through Episode 20, which is the full Christmas episode that is 100% in style with Godziban in tone while also bringing the Christmas cheer. Until then, just think of Gigan as a precursor to Christmas, like he’s an Elf on the Shelf or something but instead of reporting back you child’s misdeeds to Santa and normalizing a life of surveillance, he’s just a jerk. Just like the Elf on the Shelf! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun The Godzilla brothers are practicing roaring, but after some discussion about goals in life, they decide to take a break and roast some sweet potatoes with Godzilla-kun’s atomic breath so they can all enjoy the tasty treat. That’s what’s good in life, roasting food with your own innate super powers and sharing them with your family. This is all canon, by the way, Godzilla-kun and his brothers eat roasted sweet potatoes that they cook themselves. 100% canon, no takebacks! While they are chowing down a meteor appears in the sky crashing down on Earth/whatever planet this is! But that’s no meteor, it’s a Gigan! Gigan bangs his claws together to show how tough he is… Baragon is having fun digging in the dirt (and now speaks with a fancy new voice!) Gigan shows up and introduces himself. Baragon is happy to meet a new kaiju and talks about his digging skills and asks about Gigan’s skills. But Gigan is just interesting in fighting people and claws Baragon! Noooo! Poor Baragon! Anguirus is busy practicing rolling into a ball back and forth, but now Gigan arrives here with the same set up, introducing himself and preparing to attack. Anguirus introduces himself as well, unaware of the danger, but soon Gigan stabs him where Anguirus doesn’t have armor and lifts him up! Noooo! Poor Anguirus! The Godzilla brothers have finished their food and Godzilla-kun and Minya promptly fall asleep, leaving only Little awake. Gigan sees Baby Mothra, but talks to himself and thinks Mothra is far too pathetic of a kaiju to even bother fighting. That’s probably a good decision for Gigan, as we’ve seen time and time again in this series, Baby Mothra would have cleaned his clock! Gigan goes to continue looking for a challenge. To Be Continued… Gee, who could the challenge be? And how quickly can Godzilla-kun beat this guy up? Luckily there is only two parts to this story, so you just have to wait until the next episode to see all the action! Until then, we got smog monsters roaming the planes and dispensing wise sayings…. Hedoji Hedoji and Hedochi are just standing around in a foggy wasteland with Hedoji sharing wisdom about Gigan without any prompting from Hedochi. Hedochi still gives a zinger at the end! Hedochi is too smart to not have the last laugh when the format changes. Another Godziban comes to a close until next time, and March of Godzilla continues to march on through 2020 until we’ve caught up with Godziban! Rated 7/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 17 – 「ミニラの息子」Go!Go!ゴジラくん#8 【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん November 29, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi It’s time! The two parter comes to the conclusion after a month of waiting! What will happen to the egg, Minya, the danger, the cliffhanger? It’s a Godziban miracle that I didn’t go insane waiting for the dramatic conclusion to this episode! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun It’s Egg part 2: The Eggening! At night…lightning strikes and the three Dorats appear! Yes, the Dorats who become King Ghidorah in the Heisei series have arrived, and they want the egg! As of now the egg is in Minya’s arms as they sleep through the night. The Dorats fly to Minya and use their Dorat magic to make it start floating away! Minya gives chase and manages to grab it, but the Dorats decide they can just float away the egg while Minya is holding it and he will eventually fall off. There is a lot of floating and MInya holding on for dear life (and dear life of the egg), but Minya is a tough son of a gun and holds on to the egg despite their best efforts to shake him off! Minya refuses to give up, so the Dorats start blasting him with lightning! Poor Minya! He collapses and the Dorats move toward the egg, but the egg is too small for them to all eat so they instead just decide to leave! They fly back to the top of the cliff they appeared on and disappear! The next morning Minya wakes up, covered in scorch marks, but the egg is still there! He takes it back to the nest, then the egg starts making noise and begins to crack for hatching. It’s baby Rodan! Rodan and Minya watch the sun rise. Godzilla-kun and Little return to check on Minya, and now they can meet the Rodan baby as well! Hedoji No more stargazing, back to wandering. This time the wasteland looks more grey than usual, but it might just be a trick of the darker palate they were using. The joke format is the same format as usual. Until… Suddenly more talking is heard but with a slightly different voice for Hedoji, and Hedochi says “Wow Wow Wow!” The cast is bigger, the Godzibanning is better, we got ourselves a real show! Plus it proved once again that Minya is the best, Minya will go through hell for his friends and just wants to love despite being the spawn of a giant anger monster. If you don’t like Minya, you are just wrong. Sorry, but it is true! Rated 10/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 16 – 「頑固おやじの一番長い日」かまってゴジラ#5【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん November 22, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi We at TarsTarkas.NET know what you are thinking: It’s not 2019 any more, why is March of Godzilla 2019 still continuing? Well, because it isn’t done yet! We haven’t caught up with Godziban! Plus, I put the poll to the people on Twitter on if to continue or just launch March of Godzilla 2020 early, and the people overwhelmingly supported extending 2019! So the people have spoken, 2019 will not end until we are damn ready to have it end! March of Godzilla 2019 will continue until we have caught up with Godziban, and then maybe it will be time to shut it down for the 2020 flavor, or maybe I’ll get around to posting the reviews of the Netflix Godzilla movies! It is a mystery that can never be solved until it happens, it is March of Godzilla 2019! Godziban‘s weirdest segment has always been the Kamatte Gojira segment, where Kamatte Godzilla from Shin Godzilla shows up to help ladies in need during troubling times. But this time things get even weirder! That’s a good thing, the weirder this show is, the better! Kamatte Gojira A father named Tetsugoro works on calligraphy designs on lanterns, but he is upset because his lone daughter is bringing her boyfriend over to meet him. Tetsugoro brought up his daughter himself after his wife died young, and she is all he has. When the boyfriend arrives, Tetsugoro won’t even turn around to look at him! His daughter pleads with him, but Tetsugoro just gets increasingly agitated despite his daughter’s best efforts. Finally, Tetsugoro turns to look at the boyfriend…AND THE BOYFRIEND IS KAMATTE GODZILLA!!!! As in he is a person wearing a suit but the Kamatte Godzilla head is his head! And it makes the weird sucking noises that Kamatte Godzilla makes in these shorts! This is bonkers but totally awesome! Is the dad losing it, or is the daughter actually dating Kamatte Godzilla? Is it because Kamatte Godzilla helped her out and she wants to marry him in response, or is Kamatte Godzilla appearing as the boyfriend to help the father deal with his crisis? Or is dad just imagining the whole thing? Tetsugoro looks back away. He is shook, as one would be, but eventually decides to put on his glasses and look at the boyfriend again (by this point we find out the boyfriend is named Kenji) But Kenji still has the Kamatte Godzilla head! His daughter even mentions kaiju when talking with her dad! What in the world is going on! Then it gets even more exciting, as suddenly Tetsugoro begins hearing fast-beat saxophone music and then rises to attack the Kamatte Godzilla-headed boyfriend! But Kenji now has a normal human face! Tetsugoro’s daughter is distraught while he is confused, but he ends up giving his blessing so the pair can get married. At the marriage ceremony, Tetsugoro begins to see the Kamatte Godzilla head on Kenji’s head again! We’ve gon full Twilight Zone here and then kept going to new Zones that don’t have names yet. The Kamatte Zone? I hope the stories continue to get more and more out there as they try to top themselves with the weirdness! Hedoji Hedoji and Hedochi are taking time off from wandering to look at the stars (and they see a falling star) Beyond that, they follow the same format, but as there are no subtitles this time I don’t know what they were talking about. Rated 9/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 15 – 「赤い風船」ジェットジャガーに訊け！#4【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん November 15, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Godziban brings us another entry in the canon of Godziban mania. That’s what shows do, bring new episodes week after week! This time we got a brand new fight combination between kaiju that has never been seen before, something Godziban will continue to do as the series adds more characters. Breaking new ground, something Godzilla Island also was able to do thanks to the power of being lower budget thus able to toss in more kaiju! This week’s episode is in English, but the Three Godzilla Brothers can’t speak English! Thanks to the magic of subtitles we can still understand them, and their declaration that they will now study English in a hurry. Their ABC book has a prominent “G” on the back cover lol They recite the alphabet and get extra excited when they hit G and there is a big graphic and fireworks. Go! Jet Jaguar – Red Balloon A red balloon is stuck in a tree, causing a young girl to cry. Until Jet Jaguar arrives!! He grows big and gets her the balloon then flies away. Little and Minya witness the action (this is the two brothers in cartoon drawing form, so they make their cartoon drawing debuts despite being main characters on the show) and want to be cool like Jet Jaguar is. Before they figure out how to be as cool, Megalon attacks! Yes, Megalon is fighting Little and Minya, this is the first time Minya has ever fought him in any official media that I know of, and Little did have a brief run-in with Megalon back on Godzilla Island, though it was largely getting grabbed by a net. Little and Minya call for help, and Jet Jaguar arrives! But thanks to him deflating as he flies, he’s tiny again! Jet Jaguar pulls out a bicycle pump, and Little pumps him up big! Super big, so huge Megalon runs for it! Little and Minya ride Jet Jaguar away. We got new team ups in addition to new monster fighting combinations! They continue to fly, but as Jet Jaguar is deflating again as he flies he soon shrinks and they land back to earth. But it’s all good as they congratulate each other. Jet Jaguar refuses to reveal how he grows big because it’s a secret. So keep the fact he is a balloon a secret, despite the fact it was obvious here and was a punchline in the last Jet Jaguar story. Hedoji Hedochi asks why there is a clumsy part in people’s minds. Hedoji says people who know themselves know they are clumsy, the ones who don’t are betrayed by their own heart, both are clumsy. Hedochi says “Okie Hedokie!” Take that, Clumsy Smurf! Rated 8/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 14 – 『ゴジラ・フェス2019』ゴジばん生上演ダイジェストムービー【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん November 8, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi There was a Godzilla Fest for the 65th birthday of Godzilla on November 3, 2019 and as part of the celebration there was a Godziban production play. This show is behind the scenes clips and portions of the final production. I can’t tell if it was a new play or if it was using the prior play architecture from the previous puppet shows they did 15-ish years ago. The play answers one big question…THERE IS An OLD MAN GODZILLA! With a CANE!!!! A cane with a snowglobe or crystal ball on the top of it!!! This is insane and awesome! The old Godzilla is ShoGoji, the first generation Godzilla from the Showa-era 1954 original movie (hence the ShoGoji nickname you may have heard of!) There is some subplot involving a medal coin/medallion/similar object, I am not exactly sure what was going on with it but it seemed meaningful even though it wasn’t directly involved in the egg drama. The main plot has been partially adapted already for the youtube show (though already modified to where they are different adventures!) but does involve the Big Egg on the side of a sheer cliff that we just saw in the show. This time the egg is clearly a Mothra egg, copying the coloros from the Mothra movies exactly. The three Godzilla brothers attempt to climb the cliff as we’ve seen, except this time they fail and fall down the cliff in exaggerated play format. Eventually Godzilla-kun gets the idea to just slam his tail into the side of the cliff, which is enough to dislodge the egg so Minya an Little catch it. At this point this seems more disruptive than the skit in the series where they just go to investigate the egg and it falls out of the next via earthquake. I’m glad to that change at least. The triplet Dorat monsters (that made King Ghidorah in the Heisei-era films!) fly by to be rude and demand the egg for themselves. Godzilla-kun fights them as Little and Minya take the egg to safety. The three Dorats are more than a match for Godzilla-kun, but then ShoGoji appears and drives them away. Not for long, as they then transform into King Ghidorah and return. The King Ghidorah puppet is truly monstrous, huge and dangerous looking. It smashes poor ShoGoji as Little and Minya scream in horror! But all is not lost, for ShoGoji then transforms himself into a gigantic Showa-era Godzilla (and is himself another massive puppet) and gives King Ghidorah a thorough thrashing. King Ghidorah is beaten, ShoGoji transforms back to normal size and the Godzilla Brothers thank him. The egg hatches and it is the Baby Mothra we all know and love, who proceeds to say “Moshi Mosu!” again and again. It’s bye-bye time!!! There is also a tiny clip of Hedoji and Hedochi puppets at the end! The play was fun as it is cool to see the origins of the show and what potential future puppets could show up. A grandpa level ShoGoji complete with fancy cane who wanders around defeating giant threats while serving as an inspiration to our heroes is a great concept. Thumbnail previews already show the Dorats will be appearing very soon on Godziban and the celebration had displays with other kaiju that should potentially appear later. Basically I need to get around to setting up the cast page, lol! There is full version of the play someone recorded and put online. It is not a full episode of Godziban but it is related enough that you might find it interesting! It is basically the same except with all the scene transitions and the Hedoji/Hedochi jokes in the beginning of the show. It is a good way to see how the real play was set up (even if the backgrounds are just sheets instead of the more lush backgrounds the plays seemed to have from photos of the time). Rated 8/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 13 – 英語版 「 Smack it! Three Godzilla Brothers」Go!Go!ゴジラくん#2【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん November 1, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Go! Go! Godzilla-kun English Godziban? It’s true! This is the rock hitting episode except dubbed into English. The English voices are very similar to the Japanese voices but it is fun hearing it in English. It also means I don’t have to write too much of a summary as I already did last time, I’ll only point out corrections! Unfortunately that means things are going to be a bit light this installment, but never fear, the future is bright! I still don’t know why one English translation of this title says “Smack It” while a different one uses “SHUT UP!” for some reason, which doesn’t even make sense in context so it’s probably just complete Google translate wrong. One of the funnest things is Godzilla-kun saying “Disaster!” when Minya fails to hit the rock. Baby Mothra’s name seems to be Moshi Mothra. Hedoji Hedochi asks Hedoji if he knows where they roam. Hedoji says when they arrive they will gain understanding to why they headed there in the first place. Hedochi says “Okie Hedochi!” That’s all you can say to wise words that seem less wise the more you think about it… Rated 9/10 Please give feedback below!
Godziban Episode 12 – 「あの崖に向かって飛べ!の巻」 Go!Go!ゴジラくん#7【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん October 25, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi No English subtitles in this one…but don’t worry, they will return! Until then, you got to put up with me describing the plot again. This is the bread and butter of why people read TarsTarkas.NET. Or they just come to look at all the cool pictures and ignore the text. Either way, it’s all good here! And there are a bit of English subtitles in a way, so not all is lost… Go Go Godzilla-kun The three Godzilla brothers are going to do more practice in monster skills. They are interrupted when suddenly Anguirus runs up to declare he found a mysterious egg! (at this point the speech bubbles he and Godzilla-kun use to communicate are now in English!) Also Anguirus now has a Japanese speaking voice! It’s actually pretty charming! The three brothers decide to go see the egg and have Anguirus guide them. In addition, the three brothers announce their adventure as an “Adventure of the three Godzilla brothers” before they depart. And Anguirus adds “and Anguirus!” to the end right before they leave. This is already awesome beyond belief and we haven’t even gotten to the actual adventure yet. The egg is at the top of a huge sheer cliff. Godzilla-kun tells Anguirus to go reconnaissance. Anguirus climbs…and climbs…and climbs…and climbs! But near the top he falls off! And curls into a ball, rolling down the hill…right towards the Godzilla brothers, who quickly start running away. But they run with Anguirus directly behind them, which sort of quells the critics of this scene in Prometheus but I digress. Anguirus rolls into a tree which bounces him back in front of Godzilla-kun. “I’m back!” he says! Now all four of them will climb! And all four of them will slide down. And keep climbing. And keep sliding. Anguirus falls off again and rolls away, like off into the horizon never to be seen again until next week’s episode away. Goodbye, Anguirus and your handsome new voice! Godzilla-kun gets within grabbing distance of the egg but slides away before he call, all three tumble down. This clearly isn’t working. It’s idea time! Inspired by Anguirus, they try to launch themselves at the egg using the tree from earlier as a catapult. Little is catapulted right into the nest next to the egg. Minya is catapulted right next to him. They examine the egg, but then the mountain starts to rumble! Minya grabs the egg for safe keeping, but he falls out of the nest! Minya rolls down the side but somehow doesn’t break the egg as he falls to the bottom. The three brothers then build a nest out of straw for the egg, obviously deciding that catapulting the egg back onto the cliff would probably be a disaster for the egg. Minya think.s it is a kaiju egg. He puts his ear up to it and hears a voice inside the egg. Minya stays behind to keep the egg warm by hugging it as the other two leave. TO BE CONTINUED! (with King Ghidorah images in the background! Is that a clue? Or a three-headed red herring?) Hedoji Hedochi asks if the egg is born of what everyone thinks. Hedoji says to be sure with your own eyes. Hedochi says “A so!” After the end title… What looks like Rodan’s shadow flies over the Hedojis! A great episode beginning a new story line, monsters on an adventure and Minya proving he is the best kaiju because he’s willing to protect a random egg he doesn’t even know. And of course we got foreshadowing and an possible new kaiju popping out of this egg. The only problem is we have to wait a few weeks for the conclusion, because next week is a prior episode dubbed into English! And then there is a special live performance episode. Eventually we will return to the world of the egg, but be patient. Rated 9/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 11 – 「ジェットジャガーに訊け!」(Ask Jet Jaguar!) #1#2#3(English ver.)【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん October 18, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi ENGLISH SUBTITLES?????!!!!!????!!! That’s right, we got English subtitles with Godziban, which means that I’ll soon find out how wrong my descriptions have been. Or I could just ignore them and decide that the subtitles are fake and the fictional reality I created is real. Yeah, that’s the ticket! The subtitles confirm that the three Godzillas are The Three Godzilla Brothers, and thanks to the power of having watched additional episodes in the future I can tell you there is at least one other Godzilla running around, but I’ll save him for his appearance. I’m still going to call him Minya even though he is officially Minilla, because I’m an old school fool. In addition to English subtitles, the repeated episodes of Go! Jet Jaguar with the subs so we can all get caught up with the story. The subtitles came about because the public demanded them, I think Toho was caught unaware of just how popular these videos would be in the west. But now we got the subs, we got the power, we got an episode coming up where they redub an episode into English (which will be a trip!), the future of Godziban is bright. Go! Jet Jaguar (a rerun) It’s the world’s first AI-minded Robot Emergency Conference! We confirm that the creator is now Dr. Roborobo. Jet Jaguar answers some press questions, mostly about how he has a heart and a robot’s primary function is to be huge. That sounds weird but okay. I’m glad they started the English translations on these. Not only are they the most dialogue-driven, but they are also easy to translate due to the fact it is all stills and just a few subtitles are needed to complete them. Go! Jet Jaguar It’s fight time! Megalon is attacking and Godzilla is there, Jet Jaguar grows huge to help in the fight, but freezes because he needs a app to fight, so has to spend time downloading it. Then spend time installing it. Then spend time rebooting. Godzilla getting increasingly upset at each new delay is hilarious. Go! Jet Jaguar Jet Jeguar grows big to fight Megalon! Megalon punches Jet Jaguar with his drill fist this punctures Jet Jaguar and it turns out he’s just a balloon and deflates and flies around the field Happy Go! Go! Halloween! A special Halloween graphic as this came out during Halloween season! We got Hedochi and Hedoji in witch costumes on a broom, Jet Jaguar as a ghost, Godzilla as Dracula, Minya as a pirate, Little as a Jack O’Lantern, Baby Mothra as a devil, other Baby Mothra as an angel, Battra as a Chinese lion, and the Twin Fairies and Disney style fairies. It’s amazing and it’s 100% canon now, people! Hedoji (Hedoji is now subtitled Master of Monsters, because he is wise) Also I think there is a typo as it says “Hedchi” instead of “Hedochi”, but they clearly say “Hedochi” in the show. Hedochi asks if it is worth living if he is born of sludge. Hedoji says that his soul is more valuable than the people who made the sludge. The zinger Hedochi has been saying is “Okie hedokie!” Wait, has that been the zinger all this time?????? That makes this show a bajillion times more awesome. Next time Godziban begins a big story arc! Rated 9/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 10 – ヘドじい漫遊記#1【ゴジばん】 aka ゴジばん October 11, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Hedoji If you love Hedoji and also love Hedoji and Hedochi, then you will love a bunch of Hedoji shorts put together! It’s all Hedoji all the time, this time! Okay, only this time. Until they do it again. Maybe! Now there is even real world shots of the countryside so they are no longer wandering in desolate wastelands. We all know that Hedoji follows basically the same formate. Wise old sage Hedoji and his grandson Hedochi are wandering the endless wastes of what may or may not be modern Earth. Hedochi stops to ask Hedoji a philosophical question or even a question about the episode of Godziban that just aired. Hedoji then responds with an grand pronouncement. Hedochi then responds with a zinger, which is usually him saying “Okie-Hedochi!” or something similar. The consistency is the key to the humor. After a few of the usual jokes, Hedochi falls over instead of joking in one episode, where Hedoji then keeps talking and eventually Hedochi gets back up and says a delayed joke. Eventually Hedojii talks about lots of monsters in his speech, and Hedochi seems excited and we hear monster sounds in what seems to be flashback remembering. This is where the lack of subtitles hits bigger than usually, as it becomes too difficult to figure out the context and I don’t know if we are hearing what happened that made the world a desolate wasteland that the Hedorahs are wandering or if it is just some other unrelated monster stuff. Some of the topics were suggested by fans in the comments of prior videos. Finally Godzilla-kun pops up to complain that he wasn’t in this episode! Poor Godzilla-kun, maybe next week, buddy! Rated 7/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

「モシュモシュ以心伝心の巻」もしモス#1／「ジェットジャガーに訊け!」#2【ゴジばん】 aka Godziban October 5, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Godziban ramps up yet another skit series, and by now has every skit that was featured in the pilot as an ongoing segment. Will there be eventual future segments? Probably. But the vast number already means we are having episodes of Godziban where Godzilla will barely appear. As long as it is still entertaining, that’s probably a good thing. Let this series breath and become its destiny, don’t keep it in a box and limit its potential. Moshi-Mosu The continuing adventure of two Baby Mothras talking via telephone, now with an animated opening featuring cartoon version of the twin fairies. This was a skit from the GEMSTONE pilot and now they are back. With an even longer telephone device (still cups with a string in between them!) and they say “Moshi Mosu” to each other over and over. I didn’t notice before, but one of the two Baby Mothra puppets has eyes that are the same color as the greenscreen they are using, so they become transparent in these clips (the other one has red eyes which behave normally!) It looks like they tried to correct it a bit in some of the shots but it isn’t perfect if I’m noticing it, lol. The Baby Mothras continue to speak back and forth, then one gets the idea to talk and then race to the other side of the phone before her voice gets there. Then the other talks and they both race to the second side to hear. It’s all fun and games for the Baby Mothra’s and their previously seen super speed. Until…. Until… Until a new voice starts saying “Batsu” on the phone! Suddenly this got really freaking interesting, lol! It’s Baby Battra! The Baby Mothras are freaking out, and eventually they run off and don’t answer the phone. Baby Battra gets sad when there is no more responses on the phone. But then the Baby Mothras appear and have come by to talk to Baby Battra, and they all are happy and celebrate and dance! Go! Jet Jaguar Continuing the story of Jet Jaguar going ot help Godzilla fight Megalon. Jet Jaguar is still unable to do anything due to not having the proper instructions installed. By the end of the episode he even shrinks back down to human size, confusing Godzilla and also Megalon who has just been standing around waiting this whole time. No one said Megalon was smart. Jet Jaguar’s programmer Dr. Roborobo (instead of the two bachelors with their own son) is the guy who gets all the blame here. Hedojii Would you believe that Hedojii is still in the same format of Hedoji and Hedochi wandering the wastelands, Hedochi asking a question, Hedoji giving a big pronouncement, and Hedochi responding with a zinger? Because it is! Rated 7/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Go! Go! Godzilla: Episode 6/ Kamatte Godzilla # 4/”Ask Jetjaguar!” # 1 aka ゴジばん September 27, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi Godziban returns for another week with not only a modern day fable for us all, but the beginning of a new series of skits featuring the Jet Jaguar skit from the pilot! We got Godzilla-kun, we got Minya, we got Little, we got Jet Jaguar, we got turtles, we got bunnies, we got everything you need to get your Godzi on! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun It’s the Tortoise and the Hare….Godzilla-style! Godzilla-kun-style? Gojira-style! We got Godzilla-kun wearing bunny ears and I repeat my assertion about this series that this is canon now, people. Godzilla wears bunny ears. He does. 100% canon, it’s official! Little and Minya are wearing shells on their backs because they are the tortoises. They are definitely not baby Gameras, or even baby Kamoebas. We all know the story, the hare raced the tortoise, got so far ahead he took and nap and overslept finishing the race. So here we go! They race….Godzilla-kun bounces up and down (hops???) and sings while doing so, meanwhile Little and Minya crawl on the ground slowly as Godzilla-kun gets far away. This is canon, remember this. Godzilla-kun gets so far ahead it is nap time. Literally curling up into a ball and covering his eyes with his tail while he sleeps (because the puppets don’t have eyelids, though they CGed eyelids in, so someone was able to fix it in post!) The two tortoises keep going, saying “nana nana” as they go. Because that’s what tortoises do! Godzilla-kun wakes up and beats himself up for oversleeping and thus losing the race. At least until he sees that Little and Minya are still crawling along far behind him. Dun dun DUN! Did M. Knight Shyamalan write this twist??? Minya and Little then spin around like a certain other famous giant turtle monster and spin off into the sky while Godzilla-kun freaks out. Go! Jet Jaguar Next up is Jet Jaguar, back again in cartoon form and answering questions, this section is silent with lots of reading but it’s all Japanese so good luck with this translation, lol! Thankfully something happens that we don’t need to translate a bunch of words, but a bunch of deeds! Luckily Megalon shows up and Godzilla is there too, Jet Jaguar grows big to go help his friend beat up a space cockroach! But a message appears in his eyes as he doesn’t seem to be doing anything. They forgot to update his programming to fight monsters! Jet Jaguar!!! Kamatte Godzilla In an apocalyptic wasteland (maybe where Hedojii is wandering around???) two warrior women fight with swords. They are dressed as a mix of gladiators and steampunk but just as their swords are clashing, Kamatte Gojira is there making noise! At first they ignore it. Then suddenly one lady swings her sword at him…but it’s just putting it into the dirt so she can pick him up and cuddle! It’s cuddle time! But the other lady also wants to cuddle! Soon the two are fighting over Kamatte Gojira and it has become a tug of war pulling on poor Kamatte Godzilla. He solved one problem but created another. Kamatte Godzilla!!! Hedojii Hedojii continues the same joke format, we don’t even see the two ladies in the background still fighting over Kamatte Godzilla like we could have. A missed opportunity for an episode that is very full of jokes and ridiculous enough I’m granting it top score regardless. Rated 10/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 07 – “Run! Three Brothers’ Chapter” Go! Go! Godzilla-kun # 5 aka ゴジばん September 20, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi With the seventh episode of Godziban we are forced to ask the big question. Where is Gabara? Certainly he has to show up soon to bully Minya so the Godzilla brothers can train him to beat him up, right? I know the puppet exists, there are photos of him from the original stage show! Maybe after the monster training storyline concludes. (Future Tars here: Nope, we have a different story yet and several new characters, but no Gabara yet!) Until then, we got more Go! Go! Godzilla-kun! There is a new kaiju who shows up this week, so maybe the cast will continue to expand like a star reaching the end of its life cycle! Wait, maybe I should find a better analogy than that. No time, gotta hit post! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun Godzilla-kun is training the boys how to run like real monsters. Suddenly Anguirus and Baragon pop up and want to join in on the running fun. Yes, Baragon is here now! Hooray for Baragon, everyone loves him! In puppet form! Also even Baby Mothra comes by, it’s a regular Monster Island reunion going on here! Godzilla and Anguirus race first. Baragon and Little also race, Baragon is much faster and jumps ahead. Minya and Baby Mothra then get ready to race, and just like last time in the GEMSTONE pilot, Baby Mothra makes Minya eat her dust by blasting away so fast. Godzilla-kun and Anguirus converse via speech bubbles agian, this time animated instead of on signs. Baby Mothra passes by Little and Baragon (Little has regained much of the lost distance) and then Godzilla-kun and Anguirus, each time making everyone she passes spin around out of control by how fast she is passing them. Baby Mothra then turns and heads back to the start, passing everyone again. The others make it back to the starting line, Little hitching a ride on Baragon’s back. Everyone then faints as Minya says a joke Now it is time for the big race between all monsters, everyone will race at the same time, reach a far away flag, and then return. Per usual, Baby Mothra shoots off super fast and returns before anyone knows what is going on. I also enjoy thejoke that Minya keeps getting knocked down by her speed and just lies there at the starting line until Mothra returns. Mothra has Minya ride on her back as she races out again, passing by the other 4 and making them eat her dust. Minya and Mothra win, Minya having learned the valuable lesson to have fast friends. Community and solidarity is the key to be a good monster. Hedoji We are again on the wasteland, but this time the clouds give the setting sun (or moon??? who knows!) an otherworldly look. Perhaps they have wandered so far on Earth they ended up on another desolate planet. Perhaps they are on the Planet of the Apes and may pass by a Statue of Liberty buried in the sand. Or maybe they are in the near future and Mad Max and his friends will soon drive by in cars. We may never know, but we do know that this stinger keeps the same format as the usual Hedoji episodes. Rated 8/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!

Godziban Episode 06 – “Secret recipe! roll of drop kick” Go! Go! Godzilla-kun #4/ Kamatte-Godzilla # 3 aka ゴジばん September 13, 2019 Written and directed by Hideyuki Kobayashi The sixth episode of Godziban is packed with skits, not only having the Godzilla brothers do Godzilla things, but there is a Kamatte Godzilla skit thrown in and TWO Hedojiis! Bigger, better, and banging, that the Godzi way! Go! Go! Godzilla-kun Godzilla-Kun is still having the monster practice for his two brothers near the Sonic the Hedgehog ramp. This time they are to kick a giant rock off a cliff onto the ramp. Godzilla-kun demonstrates this using the horizontal flying we saw in Godzilla vs Megalon and kicks the rock. Little tries next, he masters the horizontal flight, but when he hits the rock it is far too massive and instead he is the one who goes flying. At least Little manages to land on his feet. Minya tries next, but he can’t do the horizontal kick straight and keeps somersaulting around until he hits the rock head-first. Needless to say, that does not work. Minya tries again and gets a straight horizontal kick, but the rock is again too big and he bounces on top of it. That’s enough to dislodge the rock, it falls over the edge and begins rolling with Minya grabbing on for dear life. It rolls back to the top of the cliff where Little then tries to grab Minya, but fails and instead is now clinging to the rock as well as it rolls back and forth. It reaches the top of the cliff again and this time Godzilla-kun is now grabbing onto it as well as it heads back down. This is like reverse Sisyphus or something! Baby Mothra comes by and they call for help. Mothra helps…by rolling alongside the rock as it rolls back and forth!!!! This goes on for quite a while, Anguirus spies them rolling around and a big question mark appears above his head. I appreciate that one of the lessons of this episode showed that doing a horizontal kick is easy, but doing it with enough force to dislodge a rock is what is hard. I would have never guessed. It’s now canon that Little Godzilla and Minya can do horizontal kicks now. Hedojii Hedoji and Hedochi have finally reached a new place to wander, instead of a desert wasteland it is now a rocky wasteland. This is progress, but is just exposes the entire show as taking place in an endless runner where the background changes only slightly over time. It’s the same format as usual, but it’s obvious that Hedochi asks about the Godziban show in his question even if this still isn’t subtitled. Kamatte Godzilla A lady named Yuko works at a dead end office job where her boss yells at her. By the time she gets home she’s too tired to feed her Kamatte Godzilla pet or even acknowledge it as he makes noise and slides on its glass cage. She’s already passed out on bed. But not too passed out to remember to love her pet and pick it up for hugs and now things are a-ok! Love conquers all, even love of strange ugly lizards. Hedojii Huh, they wandered back to the old wasteland. Beyond that it is still the same format of question/pronouncement/zinger. Hedochi! The rock encounter with the Godzilla brothers was so awesome I’m just granting this episode a perfect score. Please continue to be silly and dumb fun while continuing to give a nice mix of skits, Godziban! Rated 10/10 Please give feedback below! Email us and tell us how much we suck!
