General

White tailed deer are the most abundant of all North
American big game animals. These
phantoms of the woodlands can be found from Canada’s
extreme north to the southernmost regions of Texas.
Deriving their name from the white underside of their tail, a white tail
deer will “flash” its tail as a warning signal to other deer in the
vicinity. A signal that no hunter wants
to see, because it means you’ve been busted.

The female (doe)
usually weighs between 90 and 130 pounds (50 to 60 kg), but some weigh in
excess of 130 pounds (60 kg). The deer's coat is a reddish-brown in the spring
and summer, and turns to a grey-brown throughout the fall and winter. The bucks
shed their antlers around February, and begin growing them back in the early
spring.

Habitat

White tailed deer can be found in a wide variety of habitat
ranging from forest to open fields. One
sure place to watch is riparian habitat, or the fringes of wetlands, lakes, and
rivers.

In the north, look for stands of conifers with easy access
to water. White tails often travel the
same trails so if you find a well used trail look for fresh sign and scout out
a location that affords good visibility of the trail while allowing you to
remain hidden.

Of the 16 sub
species of white tailed deer found in North America, only three are found in Canada. The northern white tail ranges from Western
Ontario to Nova Scotia while the Dakota white
tail ranges from the Ontario / Manitoba border westward to the foothills of the Rockies. Then
there is the small pocket of Tawny deer located in Southeastern
British Columbia.

Feeding

During the spring and summer the
white-tailed deer’s diet consists of leafy material from a variety of woody
plants, grasses, herbs, and broad leafed plants. It also includes such
delicacies as fiddleheads, mushrooms, and blueberries.

When summer’s bounty disappears,
the deer must depend largely on the twigs and buds that are within their reach.
Acorns are a favorite autumn food for white-tailed deer living in eastern Canada, and in Western
Canada grain piles left in fields attract white-tailed deer
throughout the autumn and winter. Apples
and other fall fruits are also a favorite autumn food of whitetails so don’t
overlook that abandoned fruit orchard.
But after the snow flies they start to browse on twigs, branches, or
even cedar boughs. If you have ever
eaten venison from a deer that was browsing on cedar you’re sure to remember
the distinctive flavor.

Breeding

The peak of the
rut occurs sometime around the last two weeks of November in most of Canada,
although it can occur a bit earlier or later in various regions of the country.

Does usually give
birth to one or two fawns sometime around the end of may to the first part of
June, but it is not uncommon to see birthing take place well into the summer
months.

Hunting Considerations

White tailed deer tend to be crepuscular, meaning that they
are most active in the hours around dusk and dawn. However, they can be found on the move
throughout the day, so don’t limit your hunting activities to dawn and
dusk. Many deer are taken at times when
most hunters are lounging in camp.

Deer have keen senses of hearing, smell, and
sight. Whether you are bow hunting from
a tree stand or hunting the perimeter of marshlands with a rifle, understanding
the art of stealth is a real asset.
Tens of thousands of hunters will be hitting the bush, field or water this fall to take advantage of the many great wild game and migratory bird opportunities in the province, and to enjoy their hunting heritage. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and the Ontario Conservation Officers Association (OCOA) would like to wish all outdoor enthusiasts a great season and remind them to ensure they have the latest information on regulations in their wildlife management unit, to obtain and carry all necessary permits and licenses, to obey the law, but most of all remember safety first.

“Hunting in Ontario offers many rewards, including healthy recreation in the outdoors and a lifelong connection with wildlife,” said OFAH Executive Director Angelo Lombardo. “It’s also an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and take part in a true Canadian tradition. However, responsible hunters know that a license to hunt is not a license to trespass. The vast majority of hunters in Ontario ask permission to hunt on privately-owned land, build good relationships with landowners, and show their respect and appreciation for having the privilege to hunt on private property.”

“As a hunter myself, I understand the need to show the utmost respect to both landowners and other hunters,” said OCOA President Joe McCambridge. “I encourage all hunters to put consideration for others before the need to bag a trophy deer or get a limit of geese – this will ensure a safe and enjoyable hunt for all.”

Anyone who observes illegal or unsafe hunting activity is asked to help Conservation Officers protect our natural resources and ensure public safety by calling the MNR’s violation reporting line at 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7677), or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

For more information about natural resources regulations and enforcement, please visit the OCOA website at http://www.ocoa.ca or contact your local Conservation Officer.

With over 100,000 members, supporters and subscribers, and 710 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest non-profit conservation-based organization in Ontario. For more information, visit www.ofah.org and stay connected with Facebook and Twitter.

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

Having
just applied for my 2012 antlerless deer tag there is one issue of particular
concern to me right now. It is our right to privacy when dealing with
government organizations. Yes, I know that governments are entitled to use our
personal information for their own purposes, but we have never given them a
mandate to share personal information with a foreign government. There is a
real potential for that to happen now that the Ontario Government has
contracted the management of our fish and game licensing system to an American
firm.

The
database of all Ontario fish and game licensing records now resides in
Nashville, Tennessee. There was little fanfare or flag waving on the part of
the provincial government regarding the issue, as is the norm when governments
of all levels want to show that they have created efficiencies that will save
money. So I have to wonder if this is simply an exercise in “creative
accounting” rather than a matter of true cost reduction or improved efficiency.
I’m sure that government representatives and bureaucrats have an iron-clad
contract stating that all records are the property of the Ontario Government
and as such are proprietary, confidential, and in compliance with our Privacy
Protection Act, but if you think that U.S. Homeland Security won’t trump the
Ontario Government when information is in the hands of a U.S. company, think
again.

Contracting
out by governments may be the right thing to do in some instances, but not when
individual privacy is at risk; so two thumbs down to the McGuinty government on
this one.

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) abruptly ended the Master Corporal’s tour in Afghanistan. He returned to Canada suffering from severe injuries to his head, back and knees. His battle now became personal. He had to find a way to recover, build strength and make a healthy return to society. It wasn’t easy.

“When I first came back, I was in total denial,” says Rostek. “It took a whole year to come out of my shell. The toughest thing was telling myself, ‘Go get some help; you’re not a sissy’.

The long road back for Winnipeg-based Rostek includes participating in the Faces of Freedom - Wounded Veterans’ Hunt September 28 to October 1, 2011. Three Canadian and three American veterans will attend the four-day waterfowl hunt near Minnedosa, Manitoba. The event is hosted by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF), Delta Waterfowl Foundation and Cabela’s.

Chris Heald, MWF Vice President, says the goal of the hunt is to express gratitude and respect for our soldiers and let them know they are not forgotten. “Bringing Canadian and American veterans together to share in the joy of the outdoors provides an opportunity for friendship, healing and adjustment to civilian life,” says Heald.

MCpl. Rostek, a life-long outdoors enthusiast, says time spent in the outdoors, away from the distractions of the city, is one of the best environments for healing. “There’s something about sitting with other wounded vets, fishing or just enjoying the outdoors. You start talking about what’s so wrong and how to get over it. Many people don’t understand what we go through.”

The Canadian and American veterans will be introduced to waterfowl hunting in Manitoba’s renowned ‘pot hole’ country. It’s a rare opportunity for soldiers from two countries, who fought in the same conflict, to help each other deal with personal challenges back home.

Rob Olson, President of Delta Waterfowl, will be one of several guides helping with the hunt. “I can’t imagine a better thing I’ll do all year,” says Olson. “This is about people making a sacrifice that I can’t even comprehend. I couldn’t have more respect for these guys."

Rostek is considering a new career in social work, aimed at helping wounded veterans make the difficult transition back into society. “Afghanistan is winding up,“ says Rostek. “But for us it never ends.”

The Faces of Freedom - Wounded Veterans’ Hunt itinerary includes four days of hunting, September 28 - October 1; a fundraising dinner hosted by Winnipeg Blue Bombers stars Buck Pierce and Glenn January in Portage la Prairie - September 28; and a pre-game salute to the veterans at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home game Vs. the Montreal Alouettes, September 30.

Thanks to Delta Waterfowl for this release. Be sure to visit www.sooutdoors.ca regularly:

For more information contact

Chris Heald
It's time for thoughts to turn to from ice fishing to turkey hunting. Now is a great time to beat the March doldrums by heading out to do some early season scouting. But remember that if you actually locate birds they may not be there at the end of April when our Southern Ontario turkey season opens. Birds often move as much as two to three miles from their winter roosts to mating and nesting habitat.

What you're looking for right now is that prime nesting habitat; don't be as concerned about where the birds are as you are with where they're likely to be at the end of next month. Look for a stand of mature hardwoods that blend with large clearings or open fields. This will provide ideal protection, food, and roosts for spring gobblers. Pay attention to natural and man-made obstacles like creeks, dense undercover, and fences, that are likely to stop even a determined gobbler dead in his tracks.

Take your GPS along and mark all likely setups and obstacles. Later you can transfer that data to a topographical map of the area and get a good idea of the overall lay of the land. If you stumble across a likely looking bush or field try to find the owner and ask permission to hunt his land this spring. If you gain nothing else you'll beat the winter doldrums by getting out in the bush and filling your lungs with some great Southern Ontario fresh air.

©2011 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

I have watched with biased interest over the past several weeks as we edged closer to the vote and what I saw was just plain ugly. In the end the vote was no longer about the long gun registry; it was about fear. Nobody was concerned with the facts and from the numerous articles and posts that I've read far too many Canadians are completely unaware of just how tightly firearms are controlled in Canada, even without the registry.

There are two extremist camps in the fight and neither one wants to see the registry live. On one side you have the anti gun, anti hunting, animal rights types whose objective it is to see all guns in Canada confiscated and firearms ownership made illegal. On the other side you have the gun lobby who feels that we should have the American right to bear arms. What you saw during the debates leading up to the vote was these two groups firing missiles at each other. If you listened closely to the rhetoric you would think that the survival of the human race hung in the balance.

And the media, always hungry for a controversial issue to latch onto was no better. Stories were written in newspapers and aired on TV and radio. Objectivity – the foundation of good reporting – ceased to exist as reporters were forced to follow the personal views of their editors and producers.

Everyone that was opposed to the registry was classed as a fanatical right wing Conservative. I suggest that the only link to Conservatives for a vast majority of those in favor of shutting down the registry is in the fact that the Conservative Party were the ones to bring forth and support the bill. Personally I am non partisan and vote in favor of good legislation, no matter what party brings it forward, but I simply cannot abide "feel good / do nothing" legislation. This was bad legislation when it was first introduced, it is bad legislation now, and it will continue to be bad legislation until the day that it is finally scrapped.

©2010 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

We'll let me be the one to admit that getting up at 4:00 a.m., driving to the bush, stumbling another km or more in the dark, and sitting quietly in the predawn darkness has never been one of my favorite things to do. I tend to be an early riser but I do like to see the sun up before me. Watching and listening to the woods awaken around you is an experience that is never forgotten, but I for one don't need that experience every time I go hunting.

If you know your territory, there is a great chance of bagging Mr. Gobbler before he gets the sleep out of his eyes and is looking for his early morning mating partner. But they don't simply vanish for the rest of the day after that; they're still out there looking for love, but there are some peak times to keep in mind.

Personally I love heading to the bush during the mid morning. The hens that were attracted to the gobbling toms first thing in the morning have started to disperse to feed or find nesting spots. That leaves the amorous toms looking for love in all the wrong places and often starting to gobble up a storm in an attempt to find his girl…or another one. Another bonus of heading to the bush a bit later is that the diehard early morning hunters have often packed it in by mid morning, leaving the entire bush and all the birds to you.

Although they may not gobble quite as much as in the morning, mid-afternoon is another good time to head out. The birds are again actively looking for mates and often come quickly to calls or to a hen decoy. Be on guard though because they are more likely to run in without signaling their approach with a round of gobbles and can often sneak up on unwary hunters.

So don't get into the rut of thinking that just because you didn't hit the bush before dawn that all is lost. Some of the best hunting, with the least pressure, can be had later in the day. Above all practice a safety first policy and have a great spring turkey hunt.

©2010 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

Well Taylor has departed from Canada in the Rough and has started his own national show aptly called The Canadian Tradition.

Canada in the Rough has taken on a new format this year with a distinct country flavor and a new theme song sung by country singer Larry Berrio. Also, there are three new hosts – the Beasley brothers; Paul, Keith, and Kevin – who are now co-hosts of the show and will be sharing in the hunting adventures across Canada. Gone are the Rough Gear and Rough Cooking segments and there seems to be more focus on the hunt. Thomas created a show that many scoffed at, saying that there was no market for a national Canadian hunting show. He proved them wrong an continues to produce an entertaining, conservation focused hunting show.

Following in his mentor’s footsteps is young Taylor Wright who grabbed another national spot for The Canadian Tradition with the Global TV network. Taylor has come far in terms of camera presence and production over the past several years and has put together a great show in The Canadian Tradition. With veteran Doug Vopel behind the camera the camera work is first class. It seems that The Canadian Tradition is a little lower key and that will certainly appeal to many viewers. The show also provides viewers with consistent spots for outdoor gear and hunting tips and still manages to focus on the journey.

Hunting shows are always a work in progress and I recommend making time for both shows. But what about the affect of climate change on wildlife and wildlife habitat.

According to Dr. Paul James, Director of Environmental Monitoring for the Province of Saskatchewan and a research fellow at the University of Regina, many of our wildlife species are completely dependant on a very narrow band of acceptable climactic and environmental conditions in order to survive. Serious study of the effects of climate change on habitat must be undertaken and planning models must be tuned to reflect the new reality.

In short, when an ecosystem undergoes a dramatic change it can no longer sustain resident and migratory wildlife populations. New species of plant and animal life take over and indigenous species disappear.

So why don’t animals and birds simply move as their habitat changes? The fact is that they do, and much can be learned by the studying the slow migration of species into regions where they were previously unknown. But what happens if they can’t move? Take the animals and birds of the northern tundra for example. They rely on food sources that are only produced in regions of permafrost. As the permafrost vanishes due to sustained periods of higher than normal temperatures new types of vegetation will take over. These species simply cannot move further north to find food sources because it will simply cease to exist.

Species like the ptarmigan, arctic fox, and polar bear will simply cease to exist. And guess what? It is very likely to happen in our lifetime. Many scientists firmly believe that this is a “when”, rather than an “if” scenario.

There are other fragile ecosystems like the prairie pothole region that runs from the north central US through Southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and into Southern Alberta. This ecosystem provides a stopover for almost every migratory bird along the Mississippi flyway accounting for 80% of the waterfowl in North America. This ecosystem is already at risk due to improper farming and development practices. Over the next 50 years the potholes that provide a safe secure stopover for a wide variety of waterfowl will simply cease to exist.

Don’t take my word for it! Do your own research and form your own opinion, but you will find that in spite of government rhetoric many of these changes are inevitable. Dr. James stated “Wildlife studies must now focus on how to plan for the new reality and forget about sustainable management models of the past.”

While governments dither, wildlife habitat disappears!

Visit Southern Ontario Outdoors. What we don’t hear are reports about the hundreds of hunters that will suffer a heart attack, stroke, or other preventable injury.

Why; because too many of us are complacent about the physical demands of hunting. An early morning trek into a duck blind or tree stand, carrying decoys, guns, ammo, a pack, and dressed in clothing that is better suited for sitting than walking can raise the heart rate of unconditioned hunters to dangerous levels in a very short period of time. If you’ve done little other than cut the lawn over the summer you are susceptible to pulled muscles, strained black, or a sprained ankle.

As a martial arts and fitness instructor that specializes in programs for older adults I know how to help you ease into better physical condition that will drastically reduce the odds of you becoming a hunting statistic this fall. Now is the time to get your body in shape for the coming hunting season.

The extent to which you need to do some pre season training largely depends on the type of hunting you do and the distance you need to haul yourself and your gear. Here are a few muscle groups to pay attention to and some exercises that will help make your hunt safer and more enjoyable.

1. Abdominals
Crunches are a great strengthening exercise for your upper abs. Lay flat on your back with your knees bent and you hands on the side of your head near your ears. Keep your eyes focused on a point on the ceiling as you raise your shoulders about 8” off the floor and lower again. Work up to about 5 sets of 20 reps.

For the lower abs leg raises are very effective. Lay flat on the floor and support your lower back by placing your hands under your lower back; then with your legs straight raise your legs about 1 ft off the floor. Work up to 5 sets of 10 and remember, don’t let your feet touch the floor until you’re finished a complete set.

2. Back Muscles
Back muscles are a key component of core strength and yet the most overlooked. Strong abs and weak back muscles can cause poor posture and walking form. To strengthen your back muscles, lay on your stomach with your arms and legs extended in front of you. Keep your arms and legs straight; lift your arms and legs off the floor at the same time. Work up to about 5 sets of 10.

3. Quadriceps and Hamstrings
The quads are the large muscle group on the upper front of your leg while hamstrings are the large muscles at the back of the upper leg. Both are a key component of your forward motion and must be kept strong and flexible. Squats are a great way to work your quads and hamstrings. Stand straight with your feet a bit more than shoulder width apart. Keep your back straight and squat down until your thighs are parallel with the ground (or as far as you can comfortably manage) then return to a standing position. Work up to 5 sets of 20 and remember to do these slowly.

4. Calf Muscles
Even if you’re just strolling a groomed rail trail calf muscles can take a real beating. Strengthening your calf muscles is an important aspect of your overall hiker’s workout. Stand flat with your back straight. Lift your heels off the floor and lower. Work up to about 5 sets of 10.

A more advanced exercise would be to place your toes on a step and lower your heels as far as you can, then rise up on your toes for one complete rep. This exercise provides the added benefit of stretching the Achilles tendon as well.

5. Arms and Shoulders
Although there are many exercises that target specific muscles you just can’t beat the simple push-up for overall arm, shoulder, and upper body strengthening. Lie on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders (palms down). Keeping your back and legs straight push up with your arms until they are fully extended. Lower again until your chest is about 2” off the floor and repeat. Work up to about 5 sets of 10. For a less strenuous push-up you can keep your knees on the floor.

6. Bonus Tip
Turn your preseason scouting into a workout. Take the long way to the bush and carry a pack with you. Emulate the weight you’ll need to carry when the season starts. Get out a few times a week and walk at a pace of 2 – 3 steps per second for a half hour. You’ll really feel the difference on opening day.

Start a simple exercise routine now and you’re muscles will be in prime shape for the rigors of this year’s hunting season. You may have the added benefit of improving your overall fitness and health in the process.

Drop by http://www.sooutdoors.ca/ for information about all your Southern Ontario outoors activities. Things like backdrop, terrain, and sunlight will all affect depth perception and judging the range of a target becomes a best guess situation. This applies to all firearms, the only difference is that you are generally working with longer distances with a rifle; the principle is the same.

For all but the most experienced bow hunters a shooting range of 20 to 30 yards is optimal. At 300 feet per second a well aimed arrow can experience a drop of about six inches over 30 yards; this will diminish slightly if you are shooting at a higher velocity. If you are a proficient shooter the net result for the animal at this range will be the same…it will be dead. But what happens if your estimate is off by 10 yards. The additional drop between 30 and 40 yards can be over a foot. This is not the time for guesswork. You risk missing the target, or even worse, wounding the animal.

If you hunt the same place all the time you will be familiar enough with the terrain and landmarks that, with a bit of practice, determining distance is not as big an issue. But let’s say that big buck wanders into the clearing just as the morning mist is lifting. You’re pretty sure it’s a 30 yard shot, but maybe not.

Once again technology comes to the rescue and you no longer need to guess. Modern range finders are compact, light, accurate and fast. There are a wide range of models available to address even the most demanding hunting conditions and environments.

A laser range finder uses advanced laser technology to calculate the distance to your target with an accuracy of +- 1 yard. Look through the eyepiece like you would a scope and when you acquire your target simply press the button and the exact distance to your target will be displayed. Some models will even allow you to compensate for rain or snow and even help you gauge elevation – something that is a real advantage when shooting from a tree stand.

Another trick is to sit in your stand or ground blind and range some objects within your shooting circle and tie a bit of orange tape to a tree or mark a rock. I do this at 10, 20, 30, and 40 metre distances in a T pattern with my stand or blind in the middle. That way you don’t need to worry about ranging your target when you really want to concentrate on making the shot.

The range finder won’t improve your shooting ability, but it will certainly remove the guesswork. After all a clean, quick, humane kill should be the goal of all hunters. A good quality range finder should be one of those “must get” items for your hunting toolbox.

Visit http://www.sooutdoors.ca/ for all your Southern Ontario hunting destinations and information.

©2009 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

Whether you’re calling home to say you’ll be late for dinner, or keeping in touch with a fellow hunter in the bush we are certainly less alone than in times gone by.

In more populated areas like those we typically encounter in Southern Ontario, taking your cell phone with you on your hunt, particularly if you hunt alone, can be a life saver. Just remember to keep it turned off when you’re hunting. And for those remote hunts, if your budget allows, a satellite phone will keep you in contact with civilization from just about anywhere on the planet.

Another affordable option is to buy one of the two basic types of portable radios that are available to the general consumer; GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) or FRS (Family Radio Service).

Two-way radios operate at ultrahigh frequency (UHF) between the ranges of 462.5625 and 467.7125 MHz. There is no license required for GMRS units up to 2 watts in Canada, but be careful if you intend to use them in the States, because an FCC license may be required. Many GMRS units have a range of nearly 12 km making them ideal for a variety of outdoor activities.

FRS units are less expensive and do not require a license in Canada or the US, but have a shorter range, often less than five kilometers, and a fewer number of useable channels. Both types have a typical talk time of 8-10 hours without recharging, or replacing batteries.

The ability to keep in touch is not only convenient it can potentially be a lifesaver. But remember the range of your GMRS of FRS unit is greatly reduced in hilly terrain or dense cover. Always…always know your device and its limitations.

Modern communication devices are just one more tool to add to the hunters backpack and used responsibly they can add a whole new level of safety to your outdoor pursuits.

©2009 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

I was a bit confused as to the reasons behind the move, but a conversation this week with CNSS (Canadian National Sportsmen’s Shows) VP Ray Sriubiskis certainly cleared the air.

CNSS prides itself on their promotion of sustainable multi-user practices and the inclusion of all outdoors stakeholders in their shows. This includes fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, paddling, dog training, ATV, boating, and many others. They recognize that regardless of our preferred outdoor activities we all share a common resource.

The problem is that the City of Toronto and in particular Mayor David Miller has a problem with guns. Now nobody will discount the fact that Toronto really does have a serious gun problem, but Mayor Miller likes to paint that problem with a very wide brush. He has enacted a policy that roughly states that the display, promotion, or sale of firearms is not allowed on city property. He seems to think that enacting bylaws and policies that only affect law abiding citizens will curb the illegal use of guns within city limits.

Exhibition Place and the Direct Energy building are owned by the City of Toronto and so, even though they had a 63 year relationship with CNSS, the show organizers were told that firearms could not be displayed, sold, or promoted in conjunction with the show. Now when 35% of your visitors hunt you might just want to take a step back and look at your options at this point and that’s just what CNSS did.

After carefully weighing various options, the decision was made to move to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre – which is located right in the heart of downtown Toronto. Are you confused? Well I certainly was. Remember that the promotion, display, and sale of firearms is only a “policy”, not a law, and it only applies to city owned property. Ray explained to me that it all comes down to a matter of ownership. You see the Toronto Convention Centre is owned by the Province of Ontario who fully understand and appreciate the economic contributions of hunters to the provincial economy.

Because the Toronto Convention Centre is located right in the heart of downtown Toronto one of my initial concerns was access for those of us coming from out of town. When I asked Ray about this he was very quick to respond that the improved proximity to public transit will prove to be a windfall for the show. The show is only a few steps from Union Station and within walking distance of many major hotels. Ray says that the overall quality of the venue is superior and the available space is comparable to the Direct Energy Center.

So who had the last laugh? Well it certainly wasn’t the City of Toronto who, according to Sriubiskis, will lose $750,000.00 in direct revenues and likely close to three times that amount in indirect revenues (parking, vendors, utilities, etc.). Well Mr. Miller, in my books that calculates to well over two million dollars down the toilet because of a ridiculous cosmetic, feel-good policy. Ontario doesn’t end at the Toronto City limits; it starts there!

©2009 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

That’s right folks after 63 years at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) grounds Southern Ontario’s largest outdoors show, the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show, is moving to the Toronto Convention Centre.

I’m going to give this a while to sink in before wading in with my personal opinions of the move but I’m sure there will not be many fence sitters when it comes to the new venue. For those in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) the Convention Centre is very accessible and convenient for those that use public transit. For those of us coming from out of town it’s nothing more than a logistical nightmare. Oh well, decisions are made and this was likely not a knee-jerk reaction.

For now let’s take a trip down memory lane.

The Toronto Sportsmen’s Show has been a part of my life for just about as long as I can remember, so that means that I’m only a few years shy of having been there from the beginning. My grandparents lived in the east end of Toronto when I was growing up so events like the Sportsmen’s Show provided a great, low cost way for my parents to keep us kids amused for a few hours when we made the trip from Wingham to the big city.

Up until a few years ago the Toronto Sportsman’s Show occupied the Coliseum building at the CNE. Although the larger venue provided by the Direct Energy Building was greatly needed, it did in my opinion, loose all of its character and became just another show when the move took place.

Some of my fondest memories are of jostling crowds, the smell of hay in the arena, creaking floorboards, and a multitude of stairways and hidden corridors. And then there was the ever present smell of pipe smoke. Those were the days when Brigham pipes used to sell their factory seconds for a very cheap price and were set up right across the aisle from a tobacco vendor. No, I’m not a smoker and certainly don’t advocate smoking, but that was a different era and like everyone else I became a pipe smoker for a day. To this day the smell of pipe smoke conjures up images of camping supplies, fishing tackle, and creaking floors.

I remember buying my first upscale fishing rod there; it was a Berkley Bionix and when you bought one you got a Berkley Lightning Rod for free. I never did care for the Bionix, but the Lightning Rod has accompanied me on every fishing trip since the mid 70’s and has landed – and lost – tons of fish.

Over the years we have bought tents, backpacks, fishing tackle, and every new gadget on the market. You know, now that I think of it the move to the Convention Centre may not be that much of a stretch. The move from the Coliseum for me was like loosing an old, albeit smoky, friend.

The great outdoors is still very much alive in Southern Ontario and the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show, regardless of the venue, will always be a memorable part of it.

©2009 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

With a constant snow cover ever since mid November I for one was beginning to think winter would never leave. With the sudden temperature change – -25c at the beginning of the week to +16c by the end of the week – my thoughts have turned quickly from ice fishing to turkey hunting.

April 27th marks the opening of our Southern Ontario spring turkey hunt and by the size of some of the flocks that were reported over the winter it seems that the long winter had little affect on turkey populations and hunters can look forward to a productive hunt this spring.

Now is the time to head off to your favorite bush to do a bit of pre season scouting. The ground is soft right now and it should be easy to pick up signs of foraging turkeys. You can often save yourself a lot of time by asking the landowners if they have seen any birds, or sign of birds.

Don’t assume that birds will follow the same trails or roost in the same locations as they did last year. Snow cover, floods, downed trees, etc. may have encouraged birds to seek out a new location. Conversely, don’t assume that because a certain area didn’t hold birds last year that it won’t this year.

A good pre season turkey tactic is to follow the edges of the bush until you find tracks or other sign of turkey, then sit and quietly watch and listen. Look at the base of hardwoods for telltale signs of roosting birds and plan your ideal ambush location. Don’t use a turkey call to check out an area. Stick to predator calls like crow or owl. You don’t want to make birds wary before opening day.

Once this is done mark your location so you can easily find it on opening day and then leave the birds alone and don’t keep checking back.

Make 2009 your best Southern Ontario turkey hunt ever and remember that time in the field in March will mean birds in the bag in May.

©2009 Lloyd Fridenburg – All rights reserved click here for copyright permissions
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

At long last a private members bill was introduced into the House of Commons this week that would effectively eliminate the long gun registry and return some semblance of sanity to our gun control laws. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not at all opposed to common sense gun controls, just the ineffective long gun registry.

The bill was introduced by Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville. Mr. Breitkreuz has been a champion of this cause since the seriously flawed and horrendously expensive registry was first introduced by then Justice Minister Allan Rock. I had a chance to meet him at a writers meeting a couple of years ago and was excited by his commitment and depth of knowledge on the subject.

The bill proposes a number of changes to the Firearms Act, including: 1) Elimination of the costly, badly flawed and ineffective long gun registry; 2) Streamlining the licensing system; and 3) calling for a cost/benefit of the Firearms Program every five years to ensure that Canadian taxpayers are receiving benefit for money spent.

“We are strongly supportive of the legislation introduced earlier today by Garry Breitkreuz, who has worked tirelessly to help create a rational and cost effective firearms program that focuses the government’s efforts on the prevention of crime, not the over regulation of law abiding firearms owners”, said O.F.A.H. Executive Director Mike Reader. “Mr. Breitkreuz and the Harper government should be applauded for their ongoing attempts to focus the firearms debate on the real problem, the acquisition and use of illegal firearms by criminals, not the responsible use of firearms by hunters and recreational sport shooters”.

Will the bill pass and the long gun registry be eliminated? With a minority government in Ottawa I’m not optimistic, but Ontario hunters and shooters can and should make their voice known. Contact your local MP and ask where they stand on the bill. Voice your concerns and ask that they support the bill in the House of Commons.

Just imagine how many more illegal guns would be pulled off the street if the $2 billion spent on the long gun registry had been pumped into front line law enforcement. You know that the anti gun lobby will be active on this issue so it’s more important than ever for hunters to get active as well.

Lloyd
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

Another very significant change would be the addition of a “Hunters Choice Deer Tag”. That would allow hunters the flexibility to hunt multiple WMUs with the same tag.

I’m not sure that sitting in a treestand in the depths of our Southern Ontario winter at -20 c is at the top of my list of preferred outdoor activities for that time of year, but I am really excited about the proposed change that would allow me to hunt several wildlife units with the same tag.

I am very encouraged to see the MNR taking this proactive approach to sustainable management. These changes will benefit hunters while reducing the potential for vehicle / wildlife accidents in regions of overpopulation.

You are invited to review the proposed changes and offer comments. Thanks to all who are following this blog; your comments and suggestions will help me provide you with even better items throughout 2009

I had been planning to head to the bush this morning for what may well be my last chance to hunt deer in Southern Ontario before the bow season ends. Alas, Mother Nature often has the last word on venturing out this time of year, and as the snow continues to pile up outside my door hopes are fading fast.

It’s been a strange combination of below seasonal temperatures, above seasonal temperatures and lots of snow this fall and it has me just as confused as it does the birds and animals. Oh well, I’m not packing up yet. My bow and backpack are ready to throw in the back of the car at a moments notice.

Southern Ontario deer hunters; mark your 2009 calendars right now to remind you that the antlerless deer draw closes on June 30 this year. That’s a full month earlier than normal and I’m sure it will take some hunters by surprise.

I hope everyone is in a festive mood and getting ready to chow down on some of that wonderful wild game that has accumulated over the past couple of months. Within the next month I will have added a large interactive database to http://www.sooutdoors.ca/ that will make it very easy for you to zoom in on specific destination and hunting related information.

“Peace on earth; good will toward men.”

Lloyd
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

I have nothing against the gun hunters but I have always preferred the silence of hunting alone. It gives me the feeling that all of my senses completely in tune with nature. I also don’t have a lot of time to practice so the hunting crossbow allows me to combine the stealth and solitary aspect of archery with the benefits of a stock, trigger, and scope.

Whatever your hunting preference, you have to be wondering what happened to fall in Southern Ontario. The week of the shotgun hunt in early November saw temperatures in the low to mid 20s (Celsius that is) and a mere two weeks later we have temperatures well below the freezing point and snowfalls of between 20 and 80 cm depending on your location.

I don’t know what this did to the deer but I do know what it did to my hunting (*#%9%^&$)!

I don’t own a truck or SUV and the bush I hunt is at the bottom of a long, steep hill with a road that is mostly used by tractors. It’s an interesting drive at the best of times but impossible when it’s slippery or snow covered. So there goes plan A. Even if I managed to peg a deer I’d be calling 911 before I could drag it back to the car.

The other option is a small swale that acts as a funnel to a smaller bush – lots of tracks but really hard to setup and find a good shooting lane. The abundant rainfall and sudden onset of winter means that the farmer still hasn’t taken the corn off. I guess I could try the swale but would be much more optimistic if the corn were off.

Well that’s enough whining for now. I guess I’ll be content with pounding the keyboard and hoping that I can still get in a few late season hunts.

Lloyd

Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

No matter what your preferred game species is now is the time of year to head to the fields, marshes, or bush to harvest wild game to enjoy over the long winter months.

Although it almost seems to be a contradiction it is proven that hunting is one of the safest activities that you can participate in. Perhaps that’s because of the extensive training required and the regulations that surround hunting in Ontario, or perhaps it’s because the modern day hunter realizes that perception is reality and every hunter shares in the belief that they have a duty to keep our hunting heritage perceived in a positive light by the general public.

To that end let me offer a few tips that will enhance your hunting enjoyment and preserve our great Southern Ontario hunting heritage for generations to come.

1. Respect private property! Always ask permission.

2. Never consume alcohol before or during a hunt!

3. Be as unobtrusive as possible and never leave litter behind. Another visitor to the same location should never know you were there.

4. Do anything in your power to retrieve wounded game.

5. If you’re hunting a public area be courteous to other hunters and especially to other users of the resource like hikers and cyclists.

Remember that perception is reality, so let’s all do our part as hunters to ensure that the non hunting public gets the right message and perception of hunters.

SD
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) is appalled at the action taken against its member club, the East Elgin Sportsmen’s Association, and is calling the move highly offensive and hypocritical.

“Education Director Bill Tucker has unilaterally decided, after the fact, and after an established history of carrying out this event, that the legal, sanctioned provincial shooting competition doesn’t follow his personal moral compass,” said Jack Hedman, President of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. “Mr. Tucker’s decision, on behalf of the school board, to refuse the generous donation from the East Elgin Sportsmen’s Association implies that its members are not valued or respected within the community, and frankly, that attitude is deeply offensive to the club, the O.F.A.H., and every law-abiding firearms owner in this country.”

The East Elgin Sportsmen's Association was established in 1955, and runs a family sporting club near Springfield. For the past three years it has hosted the provincial competition of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (I.P.S.C.) as a fundraiser for the East Elgin Secondary School drama program. In exchange, several students have volunteered at the five-day event, for which they have received community service hours.

Mr. Hedman noted that the O.F.A.H. delivers a mandatory hunter safety education program that includes firearms safety training, and that the province has a long history of safe hunting. The timing of Mr. Tucker’s newfound opposition to target shooting is no doubt connected to the misguided and uninformed campaign by Toronto Mayor David Miller to ban handguns in Canada.

“Handguns are already classed as prohibited firearms in Canada. Banning their legal use will not fix the real problem, which is illegal guns in the hands of criminals,” added Hedman. “What a ban may do is encourage more of the same kind of knee-jerk reaction taken by Mr. Tucker, which is to unfairly discriminate against Canada’s law-abiding hunters, target shooters and collectors.”

With 82,000 members and 655 member clubs, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is the largest nonprofit fishing, hunting and conservation organization in Ontario. I Missed the Whole Flock!

Well I hope everyone enjoyed our 10 days of summer as we glide swiftly into fall. The temperatures have dropped during this the second week of September and I may even have to consider lighting the wood stove in the beautiful cottage we are renting near Tobermory.

It might be too cool for a dip in the lake but the geese sure are getting lively. I hope those of you that are out for the early goose hunt are putting lots of meat on the table.

I guess the true sign of a hunter is looking at things from a hunter's perspective. I had just such a moment earlier this morning as I sat gazing at the water and a huge flock of Canadas made their way right towards me. As I sat wishing I had my shotgun at my side I watched the flock approach with thoughts of how I would line up on each bird and have goose breasts for dinner.

However, the problem with that scenario is that one of the main purposes for this trip was to get some good wildlife and waterfowl photos for www.sooutdoors.ca. It wasn't until the flock was well past that I looked down at my camera and had to laugh at the missed opportunity. Oh well, I guess there's always the evening shoot...I mean photo op...to come.

Lloyd
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,

The birds are gathering, the big bucks are staking their turf, and the rabbits are nibbling at farmer Jones vegetable patch. And me, I'm sitting here slogging away on the old keyboard fighting the urge to head to the bush for some early season scouting.

This is the time of year that every hunter's heart starts to pound a bit harder as the sights, sounds, and smells of autumn get us thinking fondly of our shotgun, rifle or bow and everything else takes on a bit of a background blur.

Ease that pre season anxiety by getting outdoors. Now is the time to fix up the tree stands, look for new rubs and trails, look for waterfowl feeding areas, patch up the duck blind and make sure your firearms are in perfect working condition.

It won't be long now and a bit of pre season activity might be just what you need to hold you over until opening day.

Lloyd
Keep up to date with Southern Ontario hiking, camping,
