We had an inspiring day of professional development, learning, and networking at the 2010 Fall Seminar held October 1, 2010, at Amylin Pharmaceuticals: The Info Pro and the Competitive Edge: Applying Competencies and Technologies to Benefit Your Organization
Following a continental breakfast sponsored by Elsevier, Chapter President-Elect Britt Mueller welcomed attendees and introduced our first speaker, SLA President-Elect Cindy Romaine. Cindy challenged us to become future-ready, making a “strategic shift toward being more effective at aligning with emerging and robust opportunities in the information industry and beyond.” Be sure to read her comments in the Word document posted along with her presentation and check out her web presence and provoking discussions on this concept.

Following on the theme, our next speaker Barbara Starr discussed the background of semantic intelligence and the many exciting initiatives underway worldwide to harness that technology and help connect users with the information they need, when they need it. It’s inspiring to learn of the international cooperation that is extending the possibilities of this technology and the role that information professionals are playing in its development.
Mary Linn Bergstrom and Cristela Carcia-Spitz
Mary Linn Bergstrom and Cristela Garcia-Spitz spoke next on project management, an essential element of the toolkit of the future-ready info pro. Mary Linn described how this approach to seeing a project through to successful completion was brought into UCSD libraries and Cristela described its application in specific digital projects undertaken by UCSD.
The sun broke and we moved outdoors for an ample lunch sponsored by EOS International. Discussion was lively as we talked with our colleagues in other organizations and our vendor partners and new connections were forged.
Following lunch, our exhibitors gave brief overviews of what’s new and several drawings were held for some fun and useful items. We like swag!
Next, Scott Brown demonstrated the use of social media tools, including LinkedIn and a host of others, for finding CI and other information on businesses. The list of social media tool links from Scott posted on the blog will be a treasure trove for many of us.
Everybody likes cake! SLA-SD Past President Cindy Shamel and Donna Dutton
After an afternoon break, our day closed with a lively presentation from Mary Ann Williams, an archivist with Disney. Mary Ann talked about the role of the information professional as change agent, and described her experience in spearheading organizational change in her own center. The principles discussed are easily transferable to many other settings.
Mary Ann Williams
All in all, a great day! Thanks to all those involved and especially to our exhibitor partners, whose support makes it possible for us to offer such a valuable experience at a very reasonable price. In addition to EOS International and Elsevier, vendors present this year included Reprints Desk, Safari Books Online, Dow Jones, and Morningstar Document Research. We sincerely appreciate their continuing support.
Finally, Amylin is a fabulous setting for this event and we’ll give a shout-out to chapter member and Amylin librarian Donna Dutton, as well as the many Amylin staff, who pitch in and do an amazing and efficient job of organizing this event! Thanks Donna!
Enjoy reviewing the presentations and comments/suggestions are welcome!
