A large percentage of the spam email we get is from affiliate marketing. That is, someone who wants to sell something offers a commission to people who send them buyers. People hoping to make money post affiliate links at their websites (I do that here for a number of products, but mostly for tech related books I have reviewed or mentioned) and others send out blind mailings to you, me and everyone else whose email address can be found, bought or stolen.

I host this webserver on a Linode server. When I first set it up, the latest available Ubuntu choice was 10.04 LTS, so that's what I picked and it has been running great ever since. I've had a very few outages (one from a construction crew cutting a major data pipe, one from a severe power outage at the hosting center and one from hardware failure) but they have been brief and the Linode team was very good about keeping me informed of progress.

A customer recently installed a Kerio Operator appliance behind a Kerio Control Firewall. Although his LAN is presently small enough that he could have put Operator and the phones on the same subnet as his computer network, he expects to grow, so Operator was put on a separate internal network. This avoids some traffic congestion (the firewall is still a choke point, however) and adds some additional security.

Users will always complain about spam. No matter what you do, either some message they don't like will end up in their inbox or something they did want will get put in their spam folder. You can't avoid that, but knowing more about what the users actually do can help you fine tune your spam settings so that you (hopefully) get less complaints.
