Quintessentially French and Distinctly European

"What is there to see in Pondicherry? We've been there and seen it all", the husband said tiredly. I defended that we had never seen the French Town. After a row of arguments, he agreed to visit Pondicherry. The trip was a just-like-that trip for the New Year weekend.

Journey through ECR on a bright Saturday was breezy--literally. The traffic was mild and our moods were ecstatic. We stopped at Kalpakkam to have some refreshments. Mesmerized by the spotlessly maintained township, we took a detour to enjoy the small backwaters there.

There was a small beach with colorful boats and seaweeds. We rolled our pants and plunged into the water along with our son. We were sunburnt but the cool water and the calm beach made it all worthy.

The ride through ECR was scenic and we were tempted to stop at each and every bit of water that we could see. It was almost evening when we reached Pondicherry.

The accommodation for the day was at the Aurobindo Ashram run Seaside Guest House. Pleasant sea breeze welcomed us at the Promenade, where the roar of the waves competed with the noise of the vehicles that were soon denied entry, leaving us to enjoy a walk along with the exuberant crowds. The guesthouse was simple but adequate to our needs; the USP is the location, bang on the Promenade with a balcony overlooking the sea. Do keep in mind that non-veg food and alcohol are prohibited in the guesthouse.

The bliss of a non-traffic road is something hard to get by in India...oh, how I miss Stroget in Copenhagen! When the traffic closed in the Promenade, we joined the crowd to a stroll through the rocky beach. The cacophony of many languages hit me first; I saw a mélange of people from various backgrounds. From foreigners to locals, everyone seemed to appreciate a quiet walk at the seafront.

Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges is a quiet church in the French Town. Originally built in 1855, the church offers mass in English, French, and Tamil. The church stands tall amidst the cover of green trees, majestically overlooking the Bay of Bengal. There were no signs of tourist crowd there; the place was quiet with only a handful of people praying. The interior looked ethereal, the mellow lighting complimenting the tranquility.

I enjoyed meandering through the streets of the French Town soaking in the street scenes and graffiti.

Bitten by the shutterbug recently, I enjoyed clicking photos to my heart's content, colorful French buildings were my favorite.

Manakula Vinayagar Temple was crowded when went for a quick visit.

Being New Year weekend, all the restaurants were full and booked: we ended up having buffet dinner at The Blueline Restaurant of The Promenade Hotel. The food and service were okay.

The next morning I woke up to the sound of the waves. Early morning in the promenade was busy with joggers and walkers. The husband soon joined them, while we enjoyed a simple breakfast at the guesthouse.

Paradise Beach is an isolated stretch of sea that can only be reached by a boat from the Chunnamber Boathouse. At 10 am sharp, we were waiting in the queue at the boathouse to reach the 'paradise'. We started off in a boat after a short brawl with the boatsman for overloading.

Contrary to the name, there was nothing paradisiacal about the Paradise Beach. It was hot, unclean and unsafe! Only good thing was that it was not crazily crowded. The little one collected some unusual shells and enjoyed decorating his sand castles. I was skeptical to get into the high waves but the husband and the son enjoyed a dip. I saw many youths tread into the rough waves oblivious to the lifeguard's whistles. If you want to visit this beach, bring your own supplies of towels, change of clothes and packed food. There were some changing rooms but no decent restaurants.

We've been to Auroville a couple of times before, so we skipped it. Soon, we were on our way back to Chennai. But I cherish the experience of walking along the French Town and to have tasted a piece of Europe in Pondicherry!

Picturesque Wayanad

Of Rolling Hills and Velvety Tea Gardens

On the occasion of our little one's third birthday, we went to visit Wayanad of God's own country, Kerala. Wayanad was on our travel list for a long time, so, I have already spent enough time on researching accommodation--Greenex Farms was the choice for our family.

On a busy Friday evening, our little man, the husband and I were nudging along the crowds at Chennai Central to board our Mangalore Mail to Calicut. Little man was very excited for his first train trip, and so were we. The cab arranged by Greenex was promptly waiting for us at the Calicut station.

Through the winding roads, along the misty mountains, we proceeded to Chundale town. The fun started from there..the route to the farm was rugged and we had to take a Mahindra jeep. After a terribly bumpy ride, we were in the middle of nowhere--Greenex!

True to its name, Greenex was not like a typical resort but a green hamlet. The facilities were minimal but there were other things abundant to make us happy: birds, insects, flowers, trees and peace. Being the only guest, we had the place to ourselves. We stayed at the rustic Tree House for a night, where eerie insects sang lullabies for the night and birdsong gently woke us in the morning. The view from the balcony was mesmerizing; the lush forest, misty mountains, and the gorgeous birds were out of the world for us city folks.

After a hearty breakfast of puttu, aapam and other Kerala specials, we were off to sightseeing. The first stop was the Pookot Lake which literally translates to Flowery Lake in English. We had to skip the boat ride, thanks to the crowd and waiting time. But strolling along the banks, we enjoyed the beauty of the lake as it meandered slowly, filled with pretty pink flowers and boats with excited passengers. You can even try a Fish Spa here.

Next was Banasura Hill and Dam. Here too we enjoyed the river and the surrounding nature but didn't take the boat ride due to the waiting time. The rain started pouring down when we were in a little garden near the Boat House. The rain made the lawns lavish, the mountains misty, the flowers fresh, and our little man happy to splash in the puddles.

There was Meenmutty Waterfalls nearby, and our driver suggested us to visit there. It was a slippery hike to reach the falls, which was hopelessly crowded. The water was too cold to get in but little man splashed away anyway. The crowd seemed to be having a gala time: some adventurous youths climbed on the rocks and dangled dangerously, families enjoyed the small puddles left behind by the falling water, and couples enjoyed the camouflage of the big rocks and bushes.

We came back for a sumptuous campfire dinner at the farm. I particularly enjoyed the warm food on that cold night, amidst the stars and cicada's calling. The traditional brass lamps added a magical touch.

It was really a thrilling experience to sleep in the Treehouse. The place smelled damp and musty. The cherry on top was that I spotted a lizard and some spiders in the treehouse. It was pitch dark and I laid in the bed awake for a long time, hearing eerie sounds of the insects. Treehouse is definitely not for the faint at heart.

The next day, we safely moved to Orchid Room with all the creature comforts of modern life. A rich carpet of tea plantations greeted us at the balcony. We could hear beautiful birds knocking at our glass window throughout our stay. The luxurious bathroom had a full sized glass window looking over the forest--I felt like a movie star!

Having no plans to go out, we hiked the various trails in Greenex. Little man enjoyed ducks and dragonflies along the trails. We were at pace, no running to see tourist spots or no nudging through the crowds or no keeping schedules. Then, we had a sumptuous lunch and watched a movie. I caught up with the sleep that I missed the previous night at the Treehouse.

The last day turned out really beautiful with a pleasant weather. We had to drag ourselves out of the resort. Except for the treehouse experience, I did enjoy our stay at Greenex. The friendly staffs, laid back service and the untouched greenery made it a memorable getaway.

Amidst the Architectural Marvels of Thanjavur!

I am a proud owner of a DSLR camera since the last six years. It was a special gift from my husband who doesn't believe in material gifts. "Cameras are for capturing memories", he defended then. I've always used it in the 'Auto' mode. I became a victim of the bored housewife syndrome lately; I was challenging myself to do something out of my comfort zone. The challenge is to learn the 'Manual' mode of my camera.

The three of us along with my father were on our way to Thanjavur to see the marvel of the Cholas, The Big Temple. I had a mission to get a stunning photograph of the temple in the 'Manual' mode of my beloved DSLR—the cloudy sky with perfect blues hues as the backdrop, the rich and antique brown temple filling the foreground—complete with the birds flying above!

I browsed different photography sites, read many forums, and learned all the jargons. After all, there are only two modes: one to control the speed of the lens' shutter to take moving things; and another to control the width of the lens' opening for close-up shots. It seemed simple enough. I was confident that I got it all.

Some of my husband's friends decided to tag along from Pattukottai, a nearby town. It was five in the evening when we reached. The evening looked perfect for my photography plan when someone wanted tea. The shops were at least a kilometer away and the locals suggested us to take an auto to secure our parking spot. The entire ordinance took us a good hour. I had lost the light when we entered the temple.

The UNESCO World Heritage temple looked ethereal in the moonlight, the crescent of the moon and the light on top of the gopuram called for that perfect picture. I did the following set of actions: switch the camera on, turn the knob to M, increase f value to the largest, shutter speed to the lowest, and shoot. The shutter took forever to close. The blurry image was unrecognizable, looking more like a modern art in the LCD screen. After frantically adjusting every knob and button, I gave up, frustrated. The heavily crowded temple was no place to think clearly about ISO, exposure, and other settings. So, I blamed it on the camera, deeming it very basic. Then, I saw someone with a tripod. I was contemplating my next move when my husband warned me with a no-one-borrows-a-tripod look.

In the midst of my photo hunting, I was oblivious to the wonderful little things around me: my son's curiosities, my husband's enthusiasm, my dad's history lessons, and the friends' well-meaning chatters.

I managed to get some photos, but nothing even remotely resembled my imaginative perfect picture. My husband promised to return the next day early in the morning to let me shoot for my heart's content. It was around 10 when our family reached and the morning sun was harsh. My photos were too washed out. Again, my theoretical internet research failed me.

"When you want good shots, look around. Don't dig your nose in the camera", my father advised. "If you don't include us in your shots, then there are no memories to take back", my husband pitched in. I read somewhere that the next best thing to the manual mode is the 'Aperture Priority' mode. So, I turned the knob to 'A' and started shooting.

The gigantic temple remained elusive to my skills. When I let go of the camera setting and looked around, I got some beautiful candid shots of my family: my son feeling the ancient letters etched in stone; grandfather and grandson merrily rolling the lawn; father and son having a deep conversation.

There is a quote I remember from the movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, "The only failure is the failure to try". Even with all the overexposed, underexposed, and blurry images, I am glad that I tried. My photographs are not winning any awards—nor do they have the perfect exposure—but they are memories that touch my heart!

Odense is only a two-hour ride away from Copenhagen. The view from the coastal train is enough to melt any of your apprehensions about Funen. You can kayak along the beautiful Odense river as it meanders through the overgrown trees to visit the Odense zoo, one of the best zoos in Europe. Or continue to the boat ride to Funen Village to head straight into the times of the 16th century. Hop on a bus or a train and head to the magnificent Egeskov castle, the best-preserved water castle in Europe. This is a perfect stop for families with loads of activities and free space for the kids. For shutterbugs, there are sumptuous opportunities to hone one's photographic skills.

If you're the adventurous kind, there are small islands around Funen, where you can kayak in the sea. For history buffs, the area is scattered with burial mounds and settlement sites.

The chalky white cliffs of Mon rise above the emerald waters of the Baltic Sea to form a stunning landscape. Mon is about 137 Kms from Copenhagen. There are well-defined biking paths to reach here. Alternatively, you can take a bus or taxi to reach here. The distinct and chalky soil near the cliffs provides nourishment to some rare orchids. So, being here during early summer means a glorious treat for your eyes. If you're lucky, you might find some fossils and amber along the coastline.

And, don't forget to visit Geo Centre Mons Klint. At the Centre, you can learn about the evolution of Denmark and Mon for the last 70 million years.

Thy National Park forms the largest wilderness in Denmark. Thy is known for the windswept sand dunes and grasslands. The gorgeous landscape is characterized by a large number of pine and spruce trees. The area is also known for a large population of red deer and roe deer. Bird watchers can rejoice at the park, which is home to rare birds like the sandpiper and golden plover. Hop on an Icelandic horse and enjoy the well-laid hiking trails, or you can bike around the park.

The newest National Park in Denmark, the Wadden Sea National Park is a must visit for nature lovers. The area is a stopover for many migratory birds to feast on the organisms of the rich and muddy waters before they head further north for breeding. You can witness a phenomenon called 'Black Sun' where thousands of starlings take over hiding the sun and thus making it black.

Between fall and spring, it is possible for visitors to go on an oyster safari with a guide. This particular activity is not family friendly as it is strenuous. The Pacific oysters are a non-native species here and they threaten the natural balance of this region. The only predator who can eat them is the humans. So, get ready to enjoy them...and watch out for the tide.

Don't miss the charming old town of Ribe and the picturesque island of Fano nearby. Esbjerg is the nearest city which can be reached by air, land, and rail from Copenhagen.

Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo

The last day of our trip was spent in Colombo. Colombo didn't look like a typical South Asian city, I imagined it to be much like Chennai. With its lush gardens and newly constructed spotless roads, it looked much like a low-key European City. Trees lined the well-laid roads looking over the Indian Ocean and luxury chain hotels dotted the other side.

We didn't have any plans for sightseeing, so we headed to Gangaramaya temple. The temple was situated in a quiet lane with lots of trees. The temple is a Buddhist one, but to our surprise, there were Hindu Gods like Lingam, Ganesh, and Shakti. The place was quiet and had some magnificent Buddha statues. We lingered for a while enjoying the silence-- squirrels dabbled past us, running along a big Banyan Tree covered with prayer flags.

Ranjith offered to take us for shopping to a small souvenir shop. We got a good wooden mask. We wanted a big Buddha statue and right place was Laksala, the Sri Lankan government's handicraft shop. This is a must visit if you want souvenirs, tea, gems or statues. The collection was huge and the price reasonable.

It was time to come back home. Ranjith had almost become a family in the past five days. He was kind and babysat our little one many times for us. He really made our trip stand out. Three cheers to him and Red Dot!

Of Beaches and Backwaters

The next day, we set off to Bentota, a coastal town near Colombo. The drive took us about five hours, the route had the best sceneries we ever had in Ceylon. We stopped at Kitulgala for lunch. The Plantation Hotel served a sumptuous buffet lunch and is a popular river rafting destination. The staffs were unfriendly with a don't-care attitude which was a big mood-spoiler.

From the restaurant, the river looked peaceful and not at all intimidating with foaming white froth like it appears in rafting photos. The river looked like a long one though.There was also a car museum for car fanatics.

The five-hour drive didn't go well with our toddler. He was disturbed and quite fidgety throughout, so we were not in any mood to sightsee.

Bentota was sunny and bustling with activity when we reached. There was a melange of shops, restaurants and resorts lining the road. Our resort, Bentota Beach Hotel was busy--the entire reception was filled with people of different nationalities. The hotel had a huge water body with a Frangipani tree in the centre. The white and pink flowers floated in the water and the place had an ethereal feel...that was until we went to our room.

Our rooms were in the basement. It was dark and musty, and was more like a hostel. The only upside was that the room opened into a lawn and the little one enjoyed roaming with squirrels and birds. Added to the agony was that it was a twin bedded one converted into a double. The reception was very rude to our change of room request. Red dot tours intervened and got us a proper double room for the next day.

The resort was pretty good otherwise with manicured lush lawns, clear pool and is advantageously sandwiched between the backwaters and the sea.

This was our little one's first beach experience...and he didn't like getting muddy and wet. But he had fun after getting used to a bit.

Bentota Turtle Hatchery

The next morning, after a heavy breakfast from the luxe buffet of Bentota Beach Hotel, we visited the Turtle Hatchery. The trip was informative and my husband handled some of the baby turtles. The villagers taking care of the turtles were very friendly and informative. It was educational for me but my little one was unimpressed.

We met a blind turtle, a deformed one, one missing a leg and an albino one, ironically named as Michael Jackson.

Backwater Boat Ride

Our driver suggested the boat ride along the backwaters. Glad that we took it as we saw some interesting animals and islands along the ride. The boatman was friendly with a pleasant smile and took real good care of my son.

We saw bee eaters and some egrets on the way. Giant roots emerged from the water supporting lush mangroves where bees and butterflies danced. The river meandered slowly as our boat tottered on its silvery waters.

The boatman took his time stopping the boat at anything interesting. We stopped at two small islands--one where we saw an old man making cinnamon sticks and another where we received blessings from a Buddhist monk. The first island is so small that there is only one family living on that. The little girl in the family has to commute everyday to school through boat. Some of her drawings were wonderful.

The next island had a monastery where we met a kind monk. He showed us an old palm script with Pali inscription. I was super excited to see one of the world's oldest language.

The trip was so exhausting due to the heat. When we were at the end of the ride, we saw a monitor lizard napping in a shade, so close to human settlements.

The boat ride was pleasant and we kept thinking about another boat trip we had years ago in Pichavaram.

The rest of the day was spent lazing in the pool and enjoying the glorious food at the hotel.

Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Nuwara Eliya

A Garden with a View

Hakgala is an important Botanical Garden in Sri Lanka. It is very close to Sita Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya. It reminded me of Ooty Botanical Garden, which I've not visited in years. We had about 45 minutes to explore before they closed for the day. You need at least half a day to explore the garden. Closing time also meant less crowd and pleasant evening, so we had time to smell the flowers, pose with the gigantic trees and feel the ferns.

Flowers of all sizes and colours bloomed in the garden. Here are some of the shots of the flowers..

Apart from the beautiful flowers, the garden had the usual manicured bushes, aged trees, lawns, glasshouses etc.

What made the garden special was the stunning vistas of the green hills around: the misty grey-blue sky framed it perfectly.

The light was beginning to darken when we exited the garden, and a few school kids were giggling ahead of us.

Nuwara Eliya

The Perfect Hamlet with a Cool Climate

Nuwara Eliya is a small town, perched on top of a hill with a temperate climate. The town was developed by the British to escape the heat of the plains. The town has a prominent Tamil population as the Britishers hired them to work in the tea plantations.

The SUV climbed the green hills of Nuwara Eliya slowly, all my eyes could see was the carpet of tea plantations rolling into mounds and depressions with tall trees jutting out in the bright afternoon Sun. There was a chill in the air when I hopped out to visit the Mackwoods museum.

Mackwoods Museum

The smell of the soft lawns mixed with that of the musty tea leaves was surprisingly inviting. The place was cosy, designed like a cafe with outdoor serving area. Wild flower danced in the mild wind in all shades of red and blue. Sparrows and squirrels dabbled about in the lawns, babysitting my toddler for me. The tea was served in expensive-looking Victorian tea sets.

When I think back of my fifth anniversary, it is this experience that I cherish the most. The tea in a perfect setting, mood and climate with the man I love! What more can I ask?

The Mackwoods Museum was really informative and the staff was very friendly. They arranged for a Tamil guide after hearing us speaking in Tamil. The young, Tamil lady spoke the quintessential Ceylon Tamil which had a beautiful ring to it. When she was speaking, we listened dumbstruck, not interrupting...waiting for her to go on and on. She explained the entire tea-making process from plucking to packaging.

And don't forget to get Tea from the souvenir shop.

Governor's Chalets

We stopped for lunch at a place called Governor's Chalets. The resort sits on the edge of a river with a boathouse. The waiters were busy and rude, but the view of the silvery water and the distant blue hills compensated for the service. The vast and lush lawn made the junior happy, so we chose to keep calm and sink in the view.

Sita Amman Temple

The temple is believed to be built in the Ashoka forest where Ravana kept Sita captive. This small, colourful temple stood at the side of a road with a small stream nearby. I expected it to be something big...like those hyped ones in India. There was not a soul anywhere nearby, again I was expecting a big crowd.

The stream gushed silently, the chill of cement floor tickled our feet; we spent some quiet time there. I was not the religious type, so I chose this place purely for its historical importance. It seems that the temple was built only a few years ago and there is much debate about Sita's aboard here. We did see a thick forest of trees and two marks like a giant foot, believed to be Hanuman's.

The poojari ardently recited the importance of Sita's story. And we even got an invitation for the annadhanam planned for the next day.

We called it a day after visiting Hakgala Botanical Garden. The place for the night was Avian Breeze, a charming guesthouse. There was a small garden in the front and the staffs were super-friendly...the kid had a blast.

The small resort did justice to its name with: the misty evening, the dew drops on the grass, the breeze in the air, the warm moonlight, the silence, and the cicada sounds. My little one played ball in the lawn with the staff pitching in; the husband lounged in the comfy garden; I was nostalgic of my childhood in my grandparents' house in Coonoor.

The staffs had also arranged for bed decoration and a cake. The food was just okay, the staffs were untrained---for the small gestures, it was a close-to-heart stay at the Avian Breeze.

The Highlight is the Resort!

Our early morning flight from Chennai was delayed by a few hours and we reached Colombo well after lunch time. The warm driver from Red Dot brushed off our apologies and whisked us to his SUV.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Unless you're a visitor from the west, there is nothing special about the orphanage. We watched a tusker very close, and posed with cute baby elephant--thats about it. People were also waiting to see the elephants bathing in a nearby river. But we decided to skip it as we have seen such splendors in Kabini.

The scenery around the area was pleasant and our naughty guy had some play time.

Kandy Temple

We reached Kandy by 6 PM and the first thing we felt was the smell...the incense smell from the temple. It was everywhere, lingering in the air. Just like the way I felt while reading about the Buddhist temples in Sivagamiyin Sabadham--perfect!

Our driver Mr. Ranjit quickly handed us over to a local guide. By now, our little guy was cosily snoozing in his father's baby carrier. The new guide was indifferent to our responses and kept on chattering from what seemed like a memorized text.

The noise was loud inside the temple from musical instruments and loud speakers. Our little man woke up and started a full-fledged wailing. Thanks to my little one, the husband and the guide went on with the tour while I pacified him in a quiet corner.

In all of my perception about Kandy, I imagined it to be quiet and peaceful similar to the smug Buddha with his half-closed eyes. There was too much off everything inside: the crowd, the noise, the smoke, the smell. Buddha's teeth would be brought out only during a special time of the year, so we managed only a glimpse of the replica.

The surrounding hills looked magical with the ancient temple and lucid waters; the holy smoke made it all ethereal. The interior was also painted intricately but the noise, the crowd and a miserable toddler drove us out to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Our resort for the day was The Cinnamon Citadel, a beautiful resort with a view over the Kandy river. This was a complimentary upgrade from Red Dot to a four-star resort for booking with them. The rooms were comfortable with rustic decorations; the view from our room was exceptional. One day was simply not enough for us to enjoy the facilities and the glorious view!

The next morning, our anniversary day, greeted us with misty and cool weather. The Kandy river meandered slowly with blue-green waters like a giant snake through the deep, dark forest. The receptionist delighted us with a flower bouquet. The breakfast was simply fit for a king--eggs, pittu, appam, idiyappam, curries, fruits, juices, custards--we ate a little too much!

Then, we were off to the green hills of Nuwara Eliya.

A Little Squeezed but Enjoyable!!!

It was our Fifth Anniversary and we wanted to go somewhere special. Paris was our first choice but we had to move permanently back to India a few days before our Anniversary. So, we headed to Sri Lanka, our close neighbour. Sri Lanka was there in our list of countries to visit--I've already written about my love for visiting Lanka here.

I cannot rave enough about our tour operator Red Dot Tours. From initial mail replies to planning to pricing to support during our holiday, they were simply excellent. They are everything a Travel Operator should be and they are also responsible!

This was our first trip with our toddler to uncharted territories. We have extensively travelled in Denmark and India when our little one was a baby, but this time he was walking and liked to be independent. So, no offbeat or road less travelled, we stuck to the usual ones recommended by Red Dot.

The trip had no big surprises, but we did enjoy the predictable schedule with our naughty one. Our driver Mr. Ranjith was very friendly, understanding and took good care of our son.

Our plan had enough of Sri Lanka's quintessence: serene Buddhist Monasteries, warm culture silky Tea Plantations, sandy beaches, lush mangroves, meandering and roaring rivers, and enough wildlife to keep our little adventurer happy.

Kronborg Castle, Elsinore

Nothing Dramatic, just Chic

The Kronborg Castle is known for the Danish Prince, Hamlet, the protagonist of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet. After postponing many times, we finally headed Elsinore on a Saturday.

The Danish coastal train sped through thick, green vegetation, unmindful of the dark clouds lurking above. It seemed high time that it exploded into a rain of sparkly silver threads. It was already noon when we stepped out of the musty railway station in Elsinore.

Elsinore is the closest point between Denmark and Sweden. The first sight that welcomed us was the cityscape of Helsinborg in Sweden. I was immersed in the sea front aura, when the cobbled streets made me unstable. A tram chugged before us, much to my little one's delight.

The sleepy town looked over the calm sea and Sweden's bright buildings. Two outcrops of land jutted from the sea on either side of the town. Someone had painstakingly built two identical lighthouses on each one. If I had a book, I'd have totally forgotten about the castle and immersed in the book. It was the perfect place to get lost with a book. The salty smell in the air and the tranquil surroundings along with the meandering boats almost blinded me--I ignored the gorgeous castle at the far end.

The town seemed deprived of any civilization: there were no cars, the houses looked uninhabited and the streets were empty. That was until we came near the castle. The town has congregated near the castle--the centre of attraction.

Elsinore looked vibrant, clean and fresh, and people frolicked--a summer that is quintessentially Danish. We dined at Café Krone B, a simple restaurant with a good view of the castle. My husband's chicken salad was creamy and delicious with a perfect tinge of tanginess from the herbs. It was a perfect companion for the rye bread. My fish balls melted in the mouth and the crème fraiche based sauce added a delicate zing.

The entrance fee to the castle was a bit pricey. Considering the hype about this castle, there wasn't much inside. Some Royal Chambers and Ball Rooms were just okay for me. The underground tunnels were fun and Ogier the Dane was interesting.

What made our visit special was the view and nature surrounding the castle. The air was cool, fresh and the pleasant blue of the Sea made us cosy. And of course, my little one enjoyed the play area and all the walks around the castle.

We lingered around the town for a while before the chilly wind swept us to a bakery. I settled for a hot chocolate and a croissant.

The evening train made us wait for a while in the small station. It was late when we reached Copenhagen, but we had a wonderful day!

The Funen Village

A Travel Back in Time, Not Far from the City

We opted for the boat ride from Munke Moose to Funen Village on our third day. When we reached Munke Moose, the morning mist surrounded the almost still river. Only an occasional bird or two disturbed the stillness. The boat was full with a bunch of kids and their grandparents. The boat vroomed through the chatter of the kids and murmur of the adults.

The Odense river meandered through lush green vegetation right in the middle of the city. Except for the few charming houses, it was like being in a deep forest. When we were falling for the forest-like aura, we were brought back to reality by a light traffic of boats and kayaks.

The pleasant morning breeze chilled us, and made my little one snuggle close in the baby carrier. As we reached our last stop, the sun came out and shone brightly. The Funen Village was about a KM away from the boat stop. Streams and narrow mud roads were all we could see; the place seemed devoid of any civilization. Thankfully, two runners whizzed past us and we were quick enough to stop and ask them for directions.

More than the village itself, we loved the path. After walking a while, we found a main road interjection with cafes around. It was a short walk from there.

The village was interesting and our son loved the animals there. The village is a exhibition about life in the 16th century, the time when H.C. Andersen lived. There were houses, gardens, smithy, schools, pots, crockeries and so on from the ancient time. We loved walking around in the drizzle where the nature was bounty.

There were many farm animals throughout the village and the village is kid friendly except for the cobblestone streets where the stroller struggled. There was a restaurant which boasted of some old dishes but they were bland and average.

I loved some of the paintings of household activities.

Even if you are not interested in the history, a visit to the Funen Village will refresh and recharge you. We did feel recharged before we headed home to Copenhagen. For directions and other information check the official website.

Egeskov Castle

A Breath-taking Castle in the Middle of Nowhere

On our second day in Odense, we headed to the beautiful Egeskov castle. From Odense, we took a train to Rige, from where we hoped on taking a bus. The buses are infrequent in that part of Denmark, so we took a taxi...and glad that we took it, as the view was gorgeous. Through the winding roads, lush meadows and a view over the magnificent hills, our taxi moved in the able hands of our warm driver. She apologized for her bad English and wished us a good trip with a brilliant smile.

The castle was nowhere in sight. All we could see was the high, green wall, made of plants. We moved apprehensively to the entrance. The tickets were pricey but they provided us with a bunch of pamphlets.

We had to cross two mazes before reaching the moat and the glorious view of the castle. The mazes are fun and fondly brought memories of playing mazes in weekly magazine columns. The aroma from Café Jomfru Rigborg and our rumbling stomachs called us for a lunch. The café served Italian dishes and the food was simple and delicious.

The castle garden was huge with mazes, small gardens, an aviary and many small museums. The grounds were perfectly maintained; the lawns shone with the purest of green and the bushes and shrubs were manicured to perfection. The garden is ranked as one of the most spectacular gardens around the world by CNN—I couldn't agree more.

We were eager to get to the castle, but we had to stop many times en route: vintage dolls smiled in the doll museum; peafowls and peacocks called from the aviary; berries, currants lured us to the fruit garden; dahlias and orchids blushed in the flower garden; lettuce and herbs spread pungent smell from the vegetable garden.

The castle stood majestically with its reddish brown bricks contrasting the turquoise roof tiles. The green gardens and the blue sky formed a perfect backdrop, and the sparkly silver of the moat shone in the foreground.

The castle's beauty called for a perfect Facebook profile picture...and we didn't miss it. We had a quick stopover at the dress museum which housed some extravagant gowns. The sweet smell from the rose garden pleased our olfactory senses. Bunnies and ducks roamed the gardens with an authority of the natives.

Inside the castle, there were two floors and an attic open for the public. The first floor is a hunting room with huge displays of various animal skins of lion, tiger, deer and bison, singing ode to the courage of Viking lineage.

The second floor had paintings, weapons, an exquisite collection of deer horns and Titania's Palace--the centre of attraction. It was like a doll house but housed everything from furniture to flower vases to cutleries to paintings in a miniature form to exact style and precision.

The attic is a museum of vintage toy trains, ships, planes and antique dolls. We even found an antique kitchen mixer.

The other side of the castle where we exited had a view that was even better.

Lush lawns offered a refugee for my aching legs and I gladly lounged on its feathery lap, drinking the majestic view of the castle with Piet Hein's super-egg in the front.

We moved on to a museum of vintage prams, carts and cycles. In the vintage automobile museum, early models Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Cadillac, Renault and Harley Davidson shone in their full glory. The husband was ecstatic and wouldn't move a step out the museum.

The grocer's museum let us relive our childhood, many brands in their primitive packaging bought nostalgia. We had an adventure at the horror house, the Dracula's Crypt. Sirens blared at the Falck Museum and we finished of with a display of doll and toy cars.

Families had fun walking along a treetop bridge and Segway riding. With a cup of warm cocoa, I relaxed and refreshed. Kids slurped ice slushies, licked ice creams, gulped soft drinks and munched hot dogs, and everyone was smug with their share of adventures.

Our little man was happy at the vast play area with swings and playhouses. It started drizzling and I put my protesting son in his stroller. It was time to leave, but what a beautiful place!

The ochre fields danced in the slight breeze and we rushed to catch the infrequent bus. As I climbed the bus, the rain increased its tempo and started soaking the fields.

Peaceful Oasis Near the City Centre

We bumped into the garden when we were checking the flowers along the main street of Odense. A statue of H.C. Andersen welcomed us into the garden.

Not many people were there and it seemed like a perfect place to immerse in your favorite book. Actually, it used to be a private library garden accessible only to the rich library members until mid1900s. The garden is also known as The Fairy Tale Garden and named after the famous H.C. Andersen. There were some flower arrangements as a part of the Flower Festival in a small stream. The stream also housed the beautiful paper boat sculpture.

Odense Cathedral was near the garden, and we could see Sct. Albani Church across the main road.

Colorful and Unique Arrangement of Flowers

When we were in Odense, there was Odense Flower Festival going on. After the zoo visit, we had some time to spare, so we headed to the city centre. The streets were decorated with flags and a melange of flowers adorned every corner of it. There were concerts, dancing and overall, the mood was festive.

Roses, dahlias, tulips, orchids and many exotic flowers adorned the streets.

There were beautiful flower arrangements ranging from artistic to elegant to pure kitsch.

Odense Zoo

Lush, Vast and Natural Like a Wildlife Park!

We were on a three day vacation to Odense from Copenhagen. The train ride from Copenhagen to Odense was about two and a half hours, through the azure Baltic Sea and ochre fields of Denmark's Funen Island. Our one-year old boy who slept through most of our journey, enjoyed watching the horses grazing on the fields. The Danish countryside seemed uninhibited and fertile with happy animals.

We booked our stay in Amalie Bed and Breakfast. We had a private kitchen and bathroom in a four-bedded room. The house was located on a quiet street with supermarkets nearby, and an easy walk away from the Railway station. We had a comfortable stay there. Detailed review on my TripAdvisor page.

From the Railway station, there were buses frequently available to the zoo. We completely relied on Google Maps for bus routes and timings. Being a weekday, the zoo was not crowded. School and college kids huddled for a perfect picture with the animals. The most striking feature of the zoo was the jungle-like atmosphere that we experienced. With almost no one in sight, and the big wooden bridges and eerie animal sounds, it was easy to get away to a jungle.

The zoo was huge and impressively maintained. It is possible to reach the zoo via boat from Munke Moose. The Odense river meanders through the zoo and we could see families kayaking and boating through the slow and soft river.

The animals looked healthy and happy. We could see the usual animals in the zoo like: tigers, giraffes, lions, monkeys, zebras, lemurs, storks, and so on. The Arctic setup for the penguins was unique, the walk through aquarium was small but good.

Our son had a blast at the zoo. He was just starting to walk and he enjoyed practicing his steps by shooing ducks and posing with penguins. He had fun with the domestic animals too.

Rice and curries form the staple diet similar to the neighbouring countries; sadly, the cuisine did not get its fair share of popularity as the other Asian cuisines. Coconuts are generously used in the dishes, so are the abundant spices and fishes. The hoppers, called appa in Sinhalese, are thin, cup shaped pancakes made of rice flour and coconut milk; they are spongy in the centre and eaten with curries or sambhol, a chili based sauce. The string hoppers are similar to vermicelli; they are made of rice-flour dough and served similar to the hoppers. Pittu is another traditional dish borrowed form the Malays. Lamprais is a Dutch dish made of rice, meat stock and vegetables. The use of banana leaves for baking gives it a distinct flavor. Kirbath or the milk rice, wattalappam, a rich pudding of Malay origin and kiri peni, made of curd and honey are the special desserts from Lanka. Toddy and Arrack are the locally brewed drinks; there are also thambili and kurumba -- fresh coconut drinks for a healthier option. Tea remains a popular drink, thanks to the lush plantations. Some of the fruits found here are: mangosteens, rambutans, durians, wood apples, passion fruits and bananas.

Sri Lanka is an excellent choice to escape the depressing times of the winter. The pleasant climate, easy accessibility and the traditional gastronomy are the main reasons to visit this gem.

Christmas Market, Copenhagen

Christmas is the year's best time of celebration for the Danes. It is also the time to appreciate hygge, their concept of family, comfort and cosiness. The sumptuous home-made Danish cookies and cakes, decorations and paper pixies are a part of the Danish Christmas.

History

Norse Christmas was celebrated in the month of January. It was the southern festival, honouring Sol Invictus, the invincible Sun God, that fell on Dec. 25th. The first Christian Norwegian king, Hakon the Good, ordered his countrymen to celebrate Christmas at the same time as the rest of the Christians. King Harald Blatand Gormsen of Denmark introduced Christianity thousand years ago but the Danes still prefer to call Christmas Jul, Yule or Geol as opposed to Kristmesse (Christ's Mass). The Danes believe Greenland is the home of Santa Claus (Julemanden); Greenland is connected to the North Pole via ice.

Traditions

The Danish Christmas starts with the Advert Wreath, which has four candles, each to be lighted on the four Sundays before Christmas Eve. The wreaths are made of fine spruce twigs and cuttings and decorated with red berries and spruce cones. Advent Calendars are given to the kids with 24 little presents for each day up to Christmas. The Christmas Candle is yet another traditional item with 24 markings on the candle. The candle is lit every day and the children blow out the candle before it burns up into the next day. The adults have a lot of fun too--there are special darker and stronger beers from the breweries Carlsberg and Tuborg during the season.

Lucia Night is celebrated on 13 December in remembrance of the Saint of Light, Lucia. The customary family baking starts soon after with each and everyone contributing in a way. The Christmas tree is decorated elaborately with toys, trinkets and glossy papers; the top is adorned with a shimmering star. The tree is then wrapped with electric serial bulbs. Norwegian spruce is the traditionally used tree but Normann spruce is widely used today for its ability to withstand room temperature.

Lile Juleaften, the day before Christmas Eve is the busiest with last minute shopping and straightening. According to the traditional belief, animals can talk on Christmas Day, so the kids usually find some special treats for the birds and animals. Come the day of Juleaften (Christmas Eve), Danish homes take the stage of pleasant sights and smells--cookies, meats and desserts decorate the tables. Roasted duck filled with apples and prunes are served with potatoes, beans, cabbages and jams. The holiday delicacies are: the ubiquitous aebleskiver, a round shaped sweetish snack, risengrød, a rice and milk pudding, meat balls, ginger cookies, vanilla biscuits, deep fried crullers and hvidtøl, a household beer. The rice pudding, Ris A L'Amande, is made of rice, almonds and has one full almond. The person finding the full almond is a winner of small presents. Julenisse, the naughty elf is a helper and a friend of the farmers. If he goes unsatisfied, he will play pranks on the family. Usually, the rice puddings are left for him to keep his pranks on check. Kravlenisser or the climbing elves are hung in the homes in his fond memory. The families attend Christmas mass and enjoy the organs and carols. After the meticulously planned dinner, they have a light dance and finally wash up with gløgg (mulled wine). Christmas Day is spent relaxed, visiting the near and dear ones.

Odense Flower Festival

Odense, the third largest city in Denmark, is the birth place of the fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. The famous Danish composer Carl Nielsen was also born here. Odense is located on the island of Funen and has a plethora of attractions to offer. Funen is believed to be the most fertile region of Denmark; one's never away from nature in Odense. About 100 km away from Copenhagen, Odense can be a perfect weekend break from the capital. Odense City Pass provides free access to all of the city's museums and a 50% discount at the zoo.

Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home and Museum - The small house where Hans Christian Andersen lived his childhood has been a museum since 1930. The fairy tale 'The Snow Queen' was inspired by the house. The museum, opened in 1908, is one of the oldest poet museums and showcases the life and works of Andersen. One can experience his creative range through his art and drawings.

Carl Nielsen's Childhood Home and Museum - Built in the 1850s, the house has been home to Nielsen's family until they migrated to USA in 1891. The museum shows the works of Nielsen and his wife Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, a famous sculptor.

The Funen Village - It is an open-air museum with an aura of the eighteenth century. The entire village is recreation of a village in the 1850s with thatched houses, farms, ponds etc. Traditional agriculture is practiced here and one can also get involved in the activities.

The Danish Railway Museum - The museum exhibits 150 years of trains and ferries, sprawling across 10,000 square meters. There are trains for everyone: indulge in the luxuries of a private saloon or take a humble seat in the wooden benches of a third-class compartment. Enjoy a royal lunch at the blue Wagons-Lits restaurant car.

Odense Zoo - The zoo is theme-based on different continents -- Asia, Africa and South America. Visit the roaring lions of Africa, the majestic Siberian tigers of Asia and the humid climate and downpour of the tropics in South America. The oceanarium, a chilly world of penguins, is not to be missed. In the summer, the zoo can be reached by boats through the meandering Odense river.

Odense Cathedral (Saint Knuds Kirke) - Built in the 1300s, it is considered to be the best Gothic cathedral in Europe. The intricate altarpiece is designed by Claus Berg in the 1500s. King Canute the Holy was murdered here in 1086 and his bones are on display in the crypt. The cathedral also houses the remains of King Hans and Christian II.

Museums - The Odense City Museum is an impressive museum telling the glorious times of Odense and its rise as an important city in Europe between 900 and 1660. For shutterbugs and photography enthusiasts, there is Museum of Photographic Art. For connoisseurs of art, the Funen Art Museum is a must- visit. If you wish to be transported 2,000 years back, visit the Iron Age Village. Other interesting museums include the Danish Media Museum, Military Museum, Automobile Museum and the Time Collection.

Churches - There are many churches in Odense. Vor Frue Kirke or the Church of Our Lady is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the thirteenth century. Ansgar church is built in Roman style in 1902 and named after the first apostle of Scandinavia. Other notable churches are Sct. Albani church, Sct. Hans church, Dalum church and Fraugde church.

Parks - H. C. Andersen Haven is a beautiful garden with bridges, flower-beds and pergolas. The garden has a statue of Andersen built by Louis Hasselrii. Kongens Have is an old, baroque garden; well-known as a venue for concerts and cultural events. Head to Munke Mose to relax and rest or catch a boat for a trip along the Odense river.

Shopping - Rosengaard is the largest shopping centre in Denmark with more than 140 shops. From haute couture to grocery items, it caters to all your needs under one roof. The city's shopping opportunities can be explored by jaunting through the many shopping streets. Shopping at the FynBazaar, with its spicy aromas, is an experience for your olfactory senses. Christmas in Odense - Christmas starts here on the last Saturday of November by lighting and decorating a big Christmas tree in the city square. Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market is the best place to buy stylish decorations. Christmas at the Funen Village is old-fashioned and traditional.

Positano is a small fishing town in the Amalfi Coast. At first sight, it is a melange of colourful houses stacked on a cliff over the azure seas. Look closely, there is more: pellucid waters, pebbly beaches, devious alleys, ochre houses, and kitschy shops. Visited by the adept and novice travellers alike, it remains a buzzing tourist destination today. Positano inspired many artists, film-makers, musicians, and writers -- most notably, the American author, John Steinbeck.

How To Reach: Positano is about an hour and a half drive away from Naples. It takes roughly 20-minutes to drive from Sorrento. SITA buses can be taken from Sorrento to reach Positano. The service runs through most of the towns of the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively, one can take a ferry from Sorrento.

Where To Stay: From rustic B&B's to luxury hotels, Positano caters to all travellers. If you want to be really far from the madding crowds, there are B&Bs in the villages of Nocelle and Montepertuso, in the mountains above Positano.

What To See: There is nothing much to see here; this is a place for relaxation.

* Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is a church built in the 1920's, famous for the Byzantine icon Madonna di Positano.

* Spaggia Grande is one of the largest beaches in the Amalfi Coast. It also serves as a ferry port.

Walking is a great way to see Rome. You need a good map of Rome for this; your hotel might provide one, if not, you can get one from a tourist office. With fountains and statues at every step, this will be an interesting and informative experience. You might also bump into some hidden gems along your way.

The ruins and historical buildings of Rome call for a strenuous walk. Its essential to wear comfortable shoes and keep oneself hydrated. Lunch times are relaxed affairs in Rome, throughout Italy for that matter; go for a quick bite at the fast-food joints. Save your gastronomic experiments for dinner. Early mornings are usually less crowded -- the lavish piazzas and fountains can be enjoyed peacefully in the mornings. The same goes for late evenings too.
