Why Nikon Makes and Sells the No-Wireless Version?

Nikon physically disables/removes the wireless components at the factory so they cannot be reactivated by the user (not just a software toggle). This is done specifically to meet strict security requirements. Key reasons include:

• SCIF and secure facility compliance – Many government/intelligence facilities (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities) prohibit any device that can transmit wirelessly to prevent data leaks or remote access risks.
• Government contracts – There are documented bulk purchases where agencies specifically require “no wireless connectivity” cameras that meet their security standards. Nikon is often the sole source because they can deliver properly modified bodies.
• Other institutional/professional use – Law enforcement, corporate security teams, forensic work, or any environment with strict RF (radio frequency) policies.

This is not new for Nikon – they’ve offered similar “no Wi-Fi” or wireless-disabled variants of DSLRs in the past (e.g., certain D750 units) for the same reasons.

Nikon is rumored to release a new firmware update for the Z9 camera addressing AF issues in heavy snowfall or rain, where the AF fails to lock on the subject.

Multiple user reports and forum discussions have documented challenges with the Nikon Z9’s autofocus in heavy snow and rain, where the system often locks onto or becomes distracted by falling snowflakes instead of the intended subject, causing focus hunting, loss of lock, and difficulty acquiring or tracking faces, eyes, or animals with subject detection active.

Photographers working in snowstorms or rain, particularly those shooting wildlife and birds, have described the AF jumping to high-contrast particles close to the camera, resulting in lower keeper rates and frustration during continuous shooting, especially when compared to their experiences with earlier DSLRs. The problem is widely viewed as a limitation of phase-detect autofocus when confronted with dense airborne particles.

If you thought Nikon Acquisition Syndrome was limited strictly to camera bodies and exotic glass, wait until you see what happens when the obsession spreads to official heritage merchandise. The collection spans the entire history of the brand, moving from the early Nippon Kogaku Tokyo era and the 1950s Nikkor Photo Contest pieces all the way to the modern Z8

The collection probably started about 30 years ago, when a Nikon logo pin was included as a bonus gift with a lens I bought on eBay. Assuming there had to be more out there, I began searching, and suddenly a whole new world opened up.
After a few years, I managed to acquire the most common pieces, which led me to scour websites around the world for rarer, more exotic items. During my search, I discovered that Nikon also produced tie clips and cufflinks. Since these fit perfectly alongside the lapel pins, they were quickly welcomed into the collection family.

In a world dominated by digital rumors, temporary firmware updates, and shifting sensor tech, there is something deeply satisfying about holding thirty years of permanent Nikon history preserved in brass, pewter, and enamel.

The rarest pieces in my collection are probably from the Nikkor Photo Contest in the 1950s, as well as an original Nikon logo pin, which I believe dates back to the 1940s. All the White House ones, the Olympic series, and the hot air balloon series are quite rare.

There are still at least 20 known pins missing from my collection that I have spotted in other online displays, meaning the hunt is far from over. Nikon continues to produce these lovely trinkets, ensuring the fun carries on, even though this is already likely the largest collection of Nikon pins, tie clips, and cuff links on the planet. The collection currently counts 289 pins; there are 8 more in the mail (not displayed here) and 97 tie clips/cufflinks.

The lens features an all-metal barrel, and the focus ring utilizes a high-precision helicoid mechanism—lubricated with specialized grease—to provide a silky-smooth operating feel that supports exacting focus adjustments.

Aperture control is mechanical and directly linked to the aperture ring, meaning adjustments are made on the lens itself rather than via the camera’s command dials. The lens features a 10-blade aperture, rendering out-of-focus point light sources with a pleasing, well-defined shape.

It comes with a dedicated metal screw-in lens hood. Equipped with electronic contacts that enable communication between the lens and the camera body, it supports Exif data recording, in-body image stabilization, and various focus-assist functions.

In the almost 20 years of NikonRumors, I don’t think I have ever covered the Nikon USA extended care plans. Nikon offers two different plans in the US: Nikon Care and Nikon Care+.


B&H Photo has more detailed listings on the different plans and pricing:

• Nikon 3-year Care+ Protection Plan mirrorless & DSLR cameras ($2001 – $2500)
  Nikon 3-year extended warranty for mirrorless & DSLR cameras ($4,501-$5,000)
  Nikon 2-year extended warranty for Nikon kits ($9,001-$10,000)
  Nikon 2-year extended warranty for Nikkor F/Z mount lenses ($501-$750)

The plans are also available at Paul’s Photo, Service Photo, and other authorized Nikon dealers. Here are the details:

Nikon USA’s extended care plans, officially called Nikon Care and Nikon Care+, are manufacturer-backed protection plans for eligible new or factory-refurbished Nikon cameras (Z-series mirrorless, DSLRs, Coolpix), lenses (Z and F-mount), Speedlights, and select accessories purchased from authorized dealers. These plans deliver 2 or 3 years of total service coverage that runs concurrently with (and effectively extends) the standard one-year limited warranty, covering mechanical and electrical failures—including power surges with repairs or replacements performed at authorized Nikon centers using genuine parts.

Nikon Care+ adds protection against accidental handling damage (ADH), such as drops and liquid spills. Key benefits include a “No Lemon Promise” (replacement after three repairs for the same issue), repair-or-replace coverage up to the original purchase price, free round-trip U.S. shipping, and free transferability to a new owner. Plans are typically purchased at the time of the product purchase (generally within 30 days) and exclude normal wear/tear, cosmetic damage, theft, abuse, data loss, and other conditions detailed in the full terms.

Rumors are circulating that D2 Motion is attempting to buy out MRMC (Mark Roberts Motion Control):

D2 Motion is a separate Australian motion-control company (based in the Marrickville/Sydney area) that develops and rents camera motion-control systems for film and video production. D2 Motion operates in the same broad industry as MRMC (camera robotics and motion control for filmmaking). The founder, Harry Dakanalis, has a background as a stunt coordinator, precision driver, and director in the Australian film industry, with credits across various productions. D2 Motion positions itself as a film-tech/motion-control specialist.

Brief history of MRMC:

• 1966–2016: MRMC was founded in the UK by engineer Mark Roberts. It became a world-renowned specialist in precision robotic motion-control camera systems (iconic products include the Milo rig and Bolt High-Speed Cinebot). These systems are used in high-end film VFX, commercials, broadcast, and virtual production.
• September 2016: Nikon acquired 100% of MRMC to integrate its robotics with Nikon imaging tech and sales channels.
• March 2026: Nikon announced it was selling MRMC to MRMC Bidco Limited, a special-purpose vehicle established by the UK investment firm Blandford Capital LLP (based in Poole, Dorset). This marked the end of Nikon’s nearly 10-year ownership.
• May 2026: Early rumors circulated that MRMC had entered bankruptcy/administration shortly after the sale.
• May 2026: MRMC entered liquidation
