Nikon Z7III rumors have been circulating since 2023, and since 2023 I’ve been saying the same thing: there is still not a single credible report that this camera is coming anytime soon.

Every few months, the usual suspects drop a new Nikon Z7III “scoop” filled with made-up specifications, and the same clickbait sites happily keep regurgitating it. I will not even bother you with the made-up specifications.

June numbers can only be described as “meh”. It doesn’t look like there’s going to be much, if any, growth this year unless things pick up in the second half. However, total shipped value is up 5%, seemingly due to higher prices or consumers buying higher-end units.

Note: We’ll receive the Q1 fiscal 2027 Nikon numbers in about a week.

Compared to YTD 2025:

• DSLRs are down 37% in units and 35% in shipped value
• Mirrorless units are down 2% in units and up 6% in shipped value.
• Compacts are up 16% in units and 15% in shipped value.
• Lenses for smaller than 35mm sensors are up 3% in units and 10% in shipped value and lenses for 35mm and larger sensors are down 4% in units and up 2% in shipped value.
• The lens-to-body sales ratio is 1.56 compared to 1.49 a year ago.

We’re predicting total annual sales of between 6.26 and 6.69 million ILC bodies, slightly down from last month’s prediction.

One of the challenges with the upcoming Nikon cameras is that some of the rumored details overlap, making it difficult to assign specific specs to individual models – especially since the actual model names are still unknown. For example, the rumored mirrorless camera without an EVF and the fixed-lens model without an EVF could very well be referring to the same camera. There are also no clear details on the fixed-lens Nikon camera – will it be with a 1″ sensor, full frame, or will we get both? Once the official model designations are revealed, it will become much easier to sort out which rumors belong to which upcoming body.

Here is an updated list of what to expect next from Nikon (see previous reports):

Cameras

• Nikon Z9II: heavy RED integration, see rumored specifications, rumored for 2027.
• Nikon mirrorless full-frame minimalistic interchangeable lens camera without a viewfinder: designed for photography (similar to the ZR but based on the Z5II). Rumored for October-December 2026.
• Nikon compact full-frame fixed-lens camera: stylish, expensive, multiple colors, slim, no viewfinder. Rumored for March 2027.
• Nikon compact fixed-lens point-and-shoot camera with 1” sensor.
• Nikon APS-C camera: most likely a new top-of-the-line/high-end DX model. The Z30 is already up for replacement – it was first announced in June 2022. There were some unconfirmed reports that this could be a mini-Nikon ZR model with some RED tech inside. The RED Komodo, for example, features a Super 35mm sensor, commonly regarded as an APS-C equivalent (it’s slightly larger than a typical APS-C sensor). Rumored for September 2026.

Lenses

• New/cheaper 14-24mm, 14mm, or similar wide-angle lens as a companion to the new 24-105mm – to be paired with the Z5II (not a replacement for the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens).
• New Nikon 16-35mm lens or a similar lens designed for vloggers.
• Nikon Nikkor Z 120-300 f/2.8 TC VR S lens expected in the second half of 2026 (not confirmed).
• Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.4 to match/complete the 35mm/50mm f/1.4 lenses (expected later, may not arrive in 2026).
• More Nikkor Z cinema lenses – this has been reported for months. The lens teased at the NAB show is expected to be announced at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam (September 11-14).

Keep in mind that the announcement dates above are just estimates based on rumors, and have not been confirmed yet. I can bet that there will be delays.

2026 will be a very slow year for Nikon. So far, Nikon has officially announced only two new lenses:

Final Ruling

All claims of patent 202010127062.4 are declared invalid (legal basis: Article 22, Paragraph 3 of the Chinese Patent Law, lacks inventive step / 创造性).

Nikon (or any interested party) may file an administrative lawsuit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court within three months of receiving the decision.

In short: This is a thorough rejection of inventiveness. CNIPA held that Nikon’s specific mechanical arrangement of the four bayonet lugs, their relative sizes, angles, and relationship to the electrical terminals did not rise above the prior art (especially a 2014 Chinese patent and related US/Japanese documents) plus ordinary skill in the lens-mount field.

The invention is titled simply “配件” (Accessories). The patentee is listed as 株式会社尼康 (Nikon Corporation). The invalidation request was filed by 深圳市爵影科技有限公司 (Shenzhen Jueying Technology Co., Ltd.), the company behind the Viltrox brand.

I’ve had too many 35mm lenses to count: big and small, heavy and light, light and dark… No wonder, it’s the standard focal length in the world of prime lenses. Today I’ll be reviewing just such a standard: the second installment of the 35 Art line, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art lens.

Construction

The Sigma 35 1.4 DG II Art is a very small lens – light and compact. It fits perfectly in your pocket. It weighs just 525 g. Compared to the previous 2021 model, the length has been reduced by 14% and the weight by 20%. That’s a good result, considering the five-year difference.

This little guy has a solid build: a large manual focus ring covered in ribbed rubber. A second ring controls the aperture; there’s also an aperture lock switch and a switch for stepless or smooth operation. There’s also an AF/M mode switch and two function buttons to which you can assign whatever you want.

Image, Bokeh, Focus

The new 35mm’s rendering combines modern sharpness with an almost painterly quality of blur. The lens generates a very distinct three-dimensional effect; the subject literally “pops” from the background, which, despite its considerable softness, retains a unique edge (giving that sought-after ‘soap-bubble’ bokeh). Of course, to capture such a frame, you need a photographer who thinks: ‘I have to get as close as possible and shoot against the light.

Importantly, the push for smaller dimensions hasn’t come at the expense of bokeh balls. They’re clean, clear, and free of the distracting ‘onion ring’ effect. Onion rings are typically caused by imperfections in the polishing of aspherical elements. What do they actually look like? Picture a circle with a dot in the center and concentric rings inside, much like a cut onion – a rather nasty effect. Fortunately, I didn’t notice any of that here. The image remains vibrant, with excellent microcontrast.

There’s no such thing as a sterile, boring image here; the Sigma can transform an ordinary background into a vivid, cinematic tale. Most lenses paint a picture that’s painfully accurate, but the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG II Art steps into the frame like a pro and cleans house. This isn’t some soft, mushy blur for good boys – this bokeh has bite, with distinctive fringing and texture that adds drama to the shot. It’s not called ‘Art’ for nothing, ladies and gentlemen.

As for sharpness, in short: this Sigma is a beast. There’s no such thing as ‘soapy’ wide open. Put it on the body, set it to 1.4, and you get an image so sharp you could cut pickles for a salad. Seriously, every detail, every texture – spot on, down to the smallest nuance.

Contrasts are pure, edges perfectly defined, and there’s zero aberration. The Japanese engineers have squeezed every last drop out of these lenses. The new Sigma’s sharpness literally shines from every corner.

The true artistry of this new glass is evident in the nighttime photos: those starbursts on the streetlights are proof of perfectly corrected optics. The flares are symmetrical, razor-sharp, without any mess or diffuse ‘halo’ around the light source – even though the streetlights hit the lens squarely, which is quite a feat for such a compact lens.

And I’ll also share a secret for achieving perfectly circular bokeh across the entire frame, like the Plena. Just stop down your lens… amazing, right? That was ironic. Remember that you can control the look and plasticity of your image with your lenses, because I have a feeling some people forget that.

It’s worth noting that with Sony, stopping down is often forced by the physical limitations of the small bayonet mount, which simply cuts off light in the corners – hence the cat’s eye effect. Well, we can’t physically overcome that unless we switch to a new bayonet mount the size of the Nikon Z, hehe.

Autofocus

I’ve used the Sigma on a Sony A7V, a Nikon Zf, and a Nikon Z9 – on the Nikons, of course, via a Megadap Pro+ adapter. It feels like the fastest 35mm I’ve ever held; I’d even say it’s aggressive, like a hungry pit bull on a short leash—it snaps to focus in a split second and doesn’t let go of the target by a millimeter. On my Nikon Zf, via the adapter, it works faster than my native Nikkor 35 1.2 S.

Ugh, some might say: heresy! Impossible! Nooooo, it’s possible. The answer is simple: the Sigma 35 1.4 DG II Art has two linear motors (front and rear), while the Nikon still uses stepper motors, which are much weaker and slower.

Because this Sigma is so incredibly fast, everything works smoothly. You can feel the power immediately after turning the camera on and acquiring initial focus—there’s no irritating second-guessing. The elements move with such smoothness that you feel like they’re reading your mind. Eye detection, object tracking, and everything else are seamless.

Use

I spent quite a bit of time with the Sigma 35 1.4 DG II Art, from winter to spring. I shot with it in rain and snow. Zero stutters. Well, almost… because my Sony A7V died in the snow, and I had to pull the battery—it probably didn’t like the weather. By the way, that’s not the glass’s fault but the camera body’s.

Very pleasant to use. Small and lightweight, it makes for incredibly fun photography when attached to a Sony A7V or Nikon Zf.

This isn’t one of those bricks that, after an hour hanging around your neck, makes you think of a visit to the physiotherapist. Here we have a setup that fits into a tiny bag and is practically unnoticeable on your shoulder or in your hand.

This lightness changes the way you approach photography – you’ll find yourself lifting the camera to your eye more frequently, searching for unusual angles because the equipment doesn’t tire you out. The Sigma 35 1.4 DG II Art proves that professional optics don’t have to weigh as much as a gym dumbbell.

It’s a good companion for long hours of wandering around the city or for dynamic reportage where mobility is paramount. Personally, I always take my favorite Nikon Zf on trips or family events. I used to shoot with the I-Series because it’s small, lightweight, and fits the Zf’s style. Currently, this 35mm is replacing the I-Series for me because, above all, it’s faster, while being similar in size and weight.

I’ve started using the aperture ring on my lens a lot. I normally use the command dial on the camera body, but since the Nikon Zf is built around tactile manual dials, it feels like a missed opportunity not to use the lens ring. I have to say, changing the aperture this way is actually faster than turning the camera dial. It is also far more satisfying and simply fits the Zf’s vintage aesthetic perfectly.

I really liked it, and it’s a similar size and weight to the 85 1.4 Art, so you can conquer the world See what the difference is between the 1.2 and the 1.4. Now go to town with those 1.2 bricks, man, come on.

For whom?

Perhaps it’s easier to say who this lens isn’t for: those who use zooms and don’t want to switch to primes. Everyone else will be delighted with the new Sigma. Small, light, and strong-minded, it will find a home with 90% of photographers of all stripes. Reportage, street photography, fast-paced wedding action, or simple trips and “worksite visits.”

Personally, I prefer 1.2 for professional work (35 1.2, 50 1.2, 85 1.2), but for God’s sake, you don’t always need such brightness, especially at the cost of kilograms and dimensions.

Even though I have the 35 1.2, I’ll still buy the 35 1.4 II for the reasons I’ve already mentioned. It’s the perfect little lens for my Zf for everyday shooting. In fact, I recently took it to a major event instead of the 1.2 because of limited space in my bag. Yes, I know I have a Nikon, but I also have Megadaps – I’m not worried about speed or accuracy. This setup is faster than native Z lenses with stepper motors.

Wouldn’t a Nikkor Z 35 1.4 or 1.8 S be better? Not for me. Firstly, both are optically slow. Secondly, they look hideous. Thirdly, and most importantly, they’re simply optically inferior.

It’s worth noting that the Sigma 35 1.4 DG II Art has a very short minimum focusing distance, allowing you to capture fine details such as wedding rings.

Summary

Yes, yes, yes. This is that rare moment when engineers give you everything at once and don’t make you choose between build quality and image quality. The reduction in weight and size hasn’t compromised the optics – quite the opposite.

Chromatic aberration? Forget it, the edges here are as clean as a baby’s conscience. Sharpness? Sky-high even wide open. Add to that the picturesque rendering and magic in out-of-focus areas. Sigma has proven that it’s possible to make a lens smaller and lighter while also making it optically superior to its predecessors.

And when we add a rugged and well-thought-out design with a full set of switches and two HLA motors that hit the mark before you even think about the shot, we have the perfect instrument. This lens restores the pure joy of photography and allows you to forget about hardware limitations.

If you’ve been looking for the Holy Grail of 35s, this is it – no compromises, just pure perfection in a compact package.

I’m all for it. The move toward slimming down the optics without sacrificing quality is absolutely sound. Now, let’s get a 300 2.8 or a 120-300 2.8, please. Thank you.

A reader sent me his DIY project. For a long time, Johann F. Saba from Germany used the Meike handgrip for the Nikon Z6 and Z6II, but there is nothing like it available for the Nikon Z6III. He purchased a SmallRig cage for the Nikon Z6III, cut away the left and top parts, sanded them down smooth, and applied the same black paint. Here is the result:

Ever noticed something a little too perfect about the Nikon Z logo? The brand name Nikon contains two N letters. Is the Z in Nikon Z just the capital letter N rotated at 90 degrees clockwise (or counterclockwise)? Z with 2 lines for the double NN? Nikon’s official explanation never mentions this. In the original 2018 announcement, they wrote:

“The letter ‘Z’ represents the culmination of Nikon’s relentless pursuit of ultimate optical performance, and a bridge to a new chapter.”

They leaned into Z as the final letter of the alphabet – the ultimate, the end of one era and the start of another. But the visual pun is hard to ignore. Whether it was intentional design cleverness or a happy accident, we will never know. It’s the kind of quiet detail that makes longtime Nikon users smile. So next time you look at a Z body or a Nikkor Z lens, take a second look at that letter.

Today, Nikon celebrates its 109th anniversary!

On July 25, 1917, Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha (Japan Optical Industries Co., Ltd.) was established in Tokyo through the merger of the optical instruments division of the Tokyo Keiki company and the mirror division of Iwaki Glass with Fujii Lens Manufacturing. This merger gave rise to Nippon Kogaku K.K. and, subsequently, the Nikon of today. The new firm focused on producing optical glass, lenses, rangefinders, microscopes, and other precision instruments at a time when Japan was building its domestic optical industry.

The company that would become Nikon gradually expanded. It introduced the NIKKOR brand for lenses in the early 1930s, released its first camera (the Nikon Model I) in 1948, and launched the iconic Nikon F SLR in 1959 – a camera that helped define professional 35mm photography for decades. Throughout its history, Nikon has introduced many iconic products that have helped shape photography, including the legendary Nikon F, the Nikon F2, the Nikon F3, and the Nikon D1. What began as an optics manufacturer evolved into one of the world’s most influential camera companies. Key milestones along the way include:

• 1917 – Foundation of Nippon Kōgaku.
• 1932 – Registration of the NIKKOR lens brand
• 1948 – Launch of the first Nikon camera (Nikon Model I)

From Optical Instruments to Icons: A Brief Timeline

1917 – The Founding

Nippon Kogaku K.K. was established through the merger of the optical instruments division of Tokyo Keiki, the mirror division of Iwaki Glass Manufacturing, and Fujii Lens Manufacturing – orchestrated by Koyata Iwasaki, president of Mitsubishi. The company’s first products were rangefinders, binoculars, and microscopes. Cameras were not on the roadmap.

1932 – NIKKOR Is Born

Nikon settled on “NIKKOR” after combining the “NIKKO” abbreviation of Nippon Kogaku with the letter “R,” often used as a suffix for photographic lens names at the time. The name was registered as a trademark in 1932. The first Aero-NIKKOR aerial photography lenses followed shortly after, crafted entirely by hand.

1946 – The “Nikon” Name

In September 1946, a new compact camera was named “Nikon” — originating from “NIKKO,” the abbreviation of Nippon Kogaku K.K., to which the letter “n” was added to give a more masculine impression. The name that would eventually become one of the most recognized brands in photography was originally just a model designation for a single camera.

1950 – Korea and the LIFE Photographers

The moment Nikon truly broke onto the world stage came during the Korean War. Renowned LIFE Magazine photographer David Douglas Duncan visited Nikon’s Ohi Plant, compared Nikkor lenses against Leitz and Zeiss glass, determined that the Nikkors were superior, and headed to the front line with Nikon-equipped cameras. The resulting images – and the awards they won – sent shockwaves through the global photography market and put NIKKOR lenses on the maps of professional photographers worldwide.

1959 – The Nikon F Changes Everything

The Nikon F, introduced in April 1959, was Nikon’s first SLR camera and one of the most advanced cameras of its day. It was revolutionary in combining interchangeable prisms and focusing screens, depth-of-field preview, mirror lock-up, a large bayonet mount, a titanium-foil focal plane shutter, and a fully removable back – all in one camera. The “F” was chosen because the intended name “reflex” began with a letter whose pronunciation isn’t available in many Asian languages (this is the commonly cited story that was never confirmed by Nikon). The Nikon F3, released in 1980, went on to become the basis for a single-lens reflex camera supplied to NASA for use on the Space Shuttle.

1988 – The Name Finally Matches the Brand

In April 1988, Nippon Kogaku K.K. officially changed its name to Nikon Corporation — nearly 42 years after a compact camera had borrowed the name and made it famous. The company had finally caught up to its own brand.

2009 – Nikon in Space, Digitally

In 2009, Nikon delivered eleven D3S digital SLR cameras and seven AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses to NASA for recording images aboard the International Space Station. The relationship between Nikon and space exploration, which began with film cameras on Apollo missions, had gone fully digital.
