The Japanese Nikkei Shimbun has published an interview article with executives from Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm. Here is the summary of the interview with Nikon (the article is behind a paywall):

According to the interview, Nikon is currently focusing its investments on next-generation image processing engines, image sensors, and video cameras in its camera business, laying the groundwork for its next products.

Nikon has also stated that its future product strategy involves creating an engine and software platform and incorporating it into various products. This may mean creating a common foundation that connects the image processor, image sensor, AI chip, memory card slot, wireless equipment, etc., enabling the creation of digital cameras using various component combinations.

It might be easier to understand if you think of it as something like the TNGA platform used by Toyota Motor Corporation. In conventional car manufacturing, companies developed each car model separately, which was inefficient. However, with TNGA, the “platform” and “engine/transmission” that determine a car’s basic performance are developed as common modules in an integrated way, making it possible to efficiently offer a lineup of high-performance cars, from kei cars to large SUVs.

Nikon may also be designing each component modularly, combining parts with different specifications, such as the image sensor and AI chip, around the image processor, to efficiently design a variety of digital cameras. This approach might allow them to manufacture a wider variety of digital cameras more efficiently and in a shorter timeframe.

Canon: Focusing on the “Shooting Experience”

• Canon Vice President Tsuyoshi Tokura highlighted a change in consumer behavior, particularly among younger users.

Industry-Wide Consensus: Generative AI Has No Place in Cameras

• The Z5IIC pairs a 24.5-megapixel Full Frame backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with Nikon’s EXPEED 7 image-processing engine – the same technology platform used in Nikon’s flagship cameras. Together with NIKKOR Z lenses, it captures rich color, smooth sunset gradations, natural background blur and cleaner detail in dimly lit scenes. For first-time full-frame users, that means visibly superior photos and videos with less noise and blur, even when the light is challenging.
• High-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 14 fps enables users to capture the decisive moments of fast-moving subjects. Users can also shoot up to 15-30 fps for extreme speed.
• The Pre-Release Capture function can be set to record up to one second before the shutter is released in High-Speed Frame Capture +⁴ mode, which enables continuous shooting at up to 30 fps.

Video Features for all Kinds of Creators

• The Z5IIC supports recording at frame sizes and rates up to 4K UHD at 60 fps⁵ and Full HD at 120 fps, as well as slow-motion recording at 4× and 5×⁶, making it easy to produce impressive short-form videos without post-processing.
• When recording video, the REC lamp / tally light is lit and a red frame indicator is shown around the monitor display, so users know when they’re recording.

The new Nikon Z5IIC will be available in mid-October 2026 for a suggested retail price of $1399.95* for the body only, or $1699.95* packaged with the NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 lens. Soft bundles with the 26mm f/2.8 pancake and 40mm f/2 will also be available through various retailers.

The Nikon Z5IIC camera is rumored to be cheaper than the Nikon Z5II ($1,697) and significantly cheaper than the Sony a7C II ($2,498):

• Full-frame 24 MP sensor
• IBIS
• Based on the existing Nikon Z5II
• Most components will be the same as the Nikon Z5II
• No viewfinder
• New AF recognition mode “Fish”
• New video features
• Price for body only: rumored at $1,600 or less (could vary by country), which makes sense because of the lack of EVF
• Will come in silver and black editions (only the top plate will be silver)
