But to call Regin a virus is somewhat underestimating its capabilities. Such is its sophistication, it would be more appropriate to refer to it as a compromise platform that allows its authors, probably backed by one […]

I was speaking to a client the other day about our Password Manager program that allows self service password resets and he asked me "How many of the users will actually use this?". I thought that was an odd question at first but then I looked back to my years as a Systems Admin, Systems Engineer, product installer and trainer and thought, maybe that wasn't such an odd question after all, but a serious issue that some organizations struggle with. Most clients I have spoken with estimate that about 30% of their Helpdesk activity over time is dedicated solely to unlocking and resetting user accounts. So if just 50% of the user population makes use of your self-service password reset software, you can cut the load on your helpdesk by 15%. That is well worth the effort to bringing your users into the fold.

They eventually chose Netwrix and the following customer’s quote clearly explains …

Guide to Regulatory Compliance audits

Gone are the days when IT departments existed only to repair routine computer problems or answer simple tech questions. As the dependence on technology has continued to grow throughout the past few decades, so too have the expectations dealing with the regulatory compliance issues that surround it. The creation of new technologies has resulted in new responsibilities, and as more and more organizations are faced with the task of adhering to a multitude of regulatory compliance standards, the issue of "how can we improve our efforts?" becomes more and more pertinent. The fact is that the majority of IT departments are now responsible for adhering to more than one set of compliance requirements, while many face more than four. Finding ways to manage each set of compliance standards efficiently, sufficiently and effectively has become an increasingly difficult endeavor, but fortunately, there are several methods of ideology here.

Calibris provides professional instruction for employees of various sectors bound by specific industrial, governmental and company standards. Calibris' customers depended heavily on their consistent and reliable services to enhance employee proficiency. That responsibility is something that Calibris did not take lightly, and as a result, the IT department understood the need to maintain a stable infrastructure. A recent organizational change at Calibris, however, required delegation of certain administrative activities in Active Directory to another department, and the IT staff wasn't comfortable with the idea of losing partial control of its environment. That's when Calibris found Netwrix Active Directory Change Reporter for daily auditing and reporting of all Active Directory changes.

APN News & Media, one of New Zealand's largest media companies, is known for publishing many of the region's prominent newspapers and radio broadcasts. With many locations throughout New Zealand and Australia, the IT helpdesk was responsible for support requests from employees stationed across the region. Identity management issues continued to account for much of the helpdesk workload, and end users were looking for a more efficient solution to common IT problems. That's when the IT department found Netwrix Password Manager, a simple solution that allows self-service reset of forgotten passwords, as well as resolution of account lockouts.

Password Expiration Notifier Proves Valuable in Windows 7 Environments

The Silverstone IT department always relied on default Windows pop-up messages to warn end users that their passwords were nearing expiration, and that it was time to make a change. Following an operating system upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, however, administrators quickly realized that users were no longer getting the default password expiration reminders. Expiration dates were coming and going without the knowledge of end users. That's when Silverstone discovered Netwrix Password Expiration Notifier, an identity management solution that monitors specified Active Directory domains and organizational units for users with passwords nearing expiration. The Netwrix tool sends customizable notification e-mails to account owners so they can make the necessary modifications before their passwords expire.

10 Risky Types of Change

Change is inherent to the growth of any successful organization. Adaptation to organizational changes is a necessary reality, and without it, organizations couldn't keep up with the changing times, demographics, workflows and business. That is why changes in IT infrastructure are a necessary component of all flourishing organizations. Changes to any IT infrastructure, however, are also the root of much malevolence, as far as security and compliance efforts are concerned. Change is a necessary evil that results in, for example, newly added or removed network devices, permissions modifications and changes in server configurations, and some of the amendments to a once secure IT infrastructure that pose threats to both security measures and regulatory compliance.

Boston Medical Center's Human Resources department defines an account as stale when it has not been logged onto in 210 days. The IT department was burdened with the task of identifying all such stale accounts, but struggled with the challenges presented by the responsibility. Previous methodology regularly overlooked inactive users, and the IT department knew that a more reliable solution was necessary. That's when Boston Medical Center decided to go with Netwrix Inactive Users Tracker, an automated solution that monitors the lastLogon attributes of all users to identify stale accounts.

Key Strategies for Simplified Exchange Auditing

How would unauthorized access to a CEO's mailbox affect the company? How would unauthorized access to the server impact the business? With access to Exchange configurations such as server permissions, E-mail delivery settings and so on, former employees and current staff members can easily take advantage of their excessive permissions, whether intentionally or not, and modify settings that compromise the privacy and operation of an entire network. Moreover, access to specific confidential E-data stored in user mailboxes can jeopardize the integrity of documents and business plans. Think about all the legal contracts, the sensitive financial data, product designs, contacts and private information. Security breaches like this happen every day, but unlike the above trespassing, they often go un-reported and unnoticed-until disaster strikes.

e-Discovery Challenges

E-discovery, a government regulation that mandates record of a business or agency's electronic communication for presentation in case of court order, has catalyzed a need for dedicated legal research teams and qualified E-discovery solutions. The ever-expanding data archives of modern businesses place an impractical burden on lawyers and their review teams who are now expected to filter through documents and E-mails at incredible rates, which just a few years ago, would have been unrealistic. The necessity to break down the relevant data and cast aside the irrelevant within pre-defined time frames places a lot of pressure on legal teams. That being the case, legal teams are often left with no choice but to rely heavily, and often times imprudently, on E-discovery tools to ease the burdens of their research efforts.

SOX compliance has become an increasingly important issue for organizations of all kinds. Intended to assign a quantifiable level of accountability to organizations and the IT controls that impact financial reporting operations, the act includes two sections that affect IT departments-section 302 (Corporate Responsibility for Financial Reports) and section 404 (Management Assessment of Internal Controls). Of course, failure to meet these, or any other requirements levied by SOX standards, can result in serious penalties and loss of credibility.

User Provisioning: Right Access at the Right Time

User provisioning has revolutionized the practice of identity management, as it was once known. Essentially, user provisioning is what enables organizations to better manage their infrastructures in a way that promotes security by allowing employees to see and access precisely what they need to execute within their roles, but nothing more. More specifically, user provisioning is in place to guarantee that all the necessary resources will be available for all the necessary people at all times-- and no on else. As a result, when used correctly, it can trigger productivity and limit risk.
