The Argentines love to do anything active. Weekends in the parks are amazing. Everyone is out running, roller blading, playing football, having a picnic or a ton of other unusual things like tight rope walking. Truly amazing. I'll have to do a blog post on the park life one day.

I noticed that the sidewalks seemed to be more maintained in front of the bigger businesses like malls and hotels. I wonder if fixing the sidewalk outside of the building is left to the adjacent property owners. Just a thought.

I know that it's a bit late but I just found your blog (and let me say that I'm loving it!).

Most certantly this photo refers to a young girl posing for her fifteen birthday book. As in the USA exists the so called "Sweet sixteen" here the tradition is to throw a big party when girls turn fifteen. They rent a place specially for the party, invite hundreds of people, arrange a fancy catering, etc. And none of this partys would be complete without the birthday girl showing to all the people present the photos that she took pretending to be like a model or something. Puerto Madero is a very popular place to do this sessions and you could see this any day you go there.

I really love the message you send across through your visuals on this blog. I find the "rioplatenses" very proud and accomodating people. There is a lot of wealth in terms of their culture and I am glad to see someone taking a deep interest in the overall picture. As you said yourself, "going off the tourist route". El Ateneo is simply a gem. I remember going there when it was "El Gran Splendid" movie theater (back in the 80s). Today this bookstore not only sells books but also music CDs. Books in many different languages can be found here. It is a huge store. There is a coffee bar located on what used to be the stage. From that viewpoint, one can see the whole bookstore. It is amazing. The theater's "boxes" are still that, but one can simply sit there and read for hours on end. If you visit Buenos Aires, this is a must do. Located on Avenida Santa Fe, it is quite easy to locate.

This looks like a pasta shop to me, not a restaurant. Given our Italian heritage, we eat a lot of pasta in Buenos Aires (I cannot say Argentina because in other provinces pasta is not consumed as much as in B.A). Pasta is particularly consumed on Sundays (when families gather for long lunches), and on every 29th of each month we eat Noquis (Gnocci). Pasta shops like this one, can be found in most neighborhoods. It is always fresh pasta by the way, made on premises.

I was born and grew up in Buenos Aires. The fruit and veggies at the "verdulerias" have always been arranged in some artistic manner. Let me point out some important things about us: a) We've always had fruit/veggie stands everywhere in the city. b) Eating fruits and veggies has always been an important part of our diets. c) Even though for some reason people and the media think that we only eat meat we do not. Our country's bounty also provides us with great poultry and fish; thus this is part of our diet as well. Pasta, paella, etc. also enter the picture because of our ancestry. The same goes for German dishes, French dishes and the like. d) Our main protein dishes are always accompanied by a well assorted salad or a panache of veggies. Restaurants always have fruits and veggies in their menus (veggies for side dishes / fruit for dessert). e) It is not common for people to serve themselves at the fruit stand. The attendant does so, gladly! f) There is no display rack or anything like that underneath the fruit/veggies. This is done one by one just like building blocks.

I'm from Buenos Aires too and is exactly as Ludmila says. People love their cars and would like to have more than one if possible.
It's much much more difficult for an Argentinean to buy a car than for an American. Not only because prices are in USD and our salaries in pesos (ARS), but also because used cars prices are pretty close to those of new ones.

I was born in, and live in Buenos Aires and I can tell you that there are MANY people crazy about cars... The fact that you can see old cars is because there are also many people who can't afford a new one. But there's no doubt that they would LOVE to have a brand new car...
Cars aren't designed nowadays to last forever. Those were the times of the old Chevrolet and the others, which materials were really resistant...
What is true is that in Argentina we are not used to buy things thinkin about throwing them away when a prittier item comes out.
No offense! I felt like I had to comment this :)

And, talking about the "colectivos" -most of us call them "bondis", why is it striking that each line has its own design? =P Where are you from? What's you name? ahahaha xD

I am the Ava Chagall owner, and I was surprised to find that the first thing that appears in the web when I googled my store´s name was this nasty article... The reason why the sign is pointing the bin is because someone must have moved it... I guess, someone thought it would be funny to do so. We were located (we are no longer there)on a thin side street so we had to make sure people would go that way to see us... Your article damages our business. In future, may be you can avoid publishing your nasty articles with the name of the store in the title of your publication...
