A hammer is basically a force amplifier, converting mechanical work into kinetic energy and back. In the swing that precedes each blow, the hammerhead stores a certain amount of kinetic energy. The amount of energy delivered to the target by the hammer-blow is equivalent to one half the mass of the head times the square of the head's speed at the time of impact.

While the energy delivered to the target increases linearly with mass, it increases quadratically with the speed. Wha?? Let’s just say when you’re wanting to smash the ever-lovin’ bejeezus out of things, figure out how to make your hammer swing with more speed instead of looking for a heavier hammer.

The use of simple hammers dates to about 2,600,000 BC. Being one of the most used tools by Homo sapiens, the hammer has built up an impressive resume in the last mega-millennia. From John Henry to the Hammer and Sickle, this tool of man has often represented the blacksmith, the miner and the industrial working class. But the hammer has not just proletariat leanings – the gavel gives the wielder mandate to preside over judicial or legislative proceedings. And the ultimate power bestowing hammer, Mjölnir – “that which marks and pulverizes to dust”, gives Thor dominion over Aasgard. Now that’s a great hammer!

Pearls have been objects of beauty for centuries. A metaphor for something rare, fine and valuable, in reality the pearl is simply a hard object produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled mollusk - oysters, mussels and the like. Even the English word pearl has humble origins; it comes from the French perle, originally from the Latin perna meaning leg, after the ham or mutton leg shaped bivalve that produced the tiny wonder.

In years past, natural or wild pearls were seldom found. In an oyster haul of three tons, only 3 to 4 pearls would be found by the divers searching the ocean floors and river bottoms. This rarity made pearls the gems of kings and rulers, precious enough to even be the gems of the afterlife. After WWII, the pearl was brought to the masses thanks to the advent of modern farming techniques. The ubiquity of pearls has caused an explosion of pearl designs and uses unimaginable to the divers of yore. Pearl lampshades anyone?

South Sea, Tahitian, Akoya, Biwa, Freshwater, Saltwater, Wild, Cultivated, Baroque, Keishi, Button, Irradiated, Dyed, Natural, Blue, Black or Pink – only a malacologist (one who studies mollusks) can keep them straight. In years past, hierarchies of luster, color, size, lack of surface flaw and symmetry assigned pearls to a rigid caste system of value. Today’s pearl lives in a much more egalitarian society. Just love a pearl because it is a marvel of the natural world!

Although you may do almost anything with a pearl, they still need special care. Made of calcium carbonate, they can dissolve quickly in the weakest of acidic solutions. Clean them gently with a damp cloth and wear them daily!

Prized since antiquity, lapis lazuli has been mined as early as the 7th millennium BC. Lapis was tremendously important in the ancient and medieval world. In the Mesopotamian poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh (17th-18th Century BC), one of the oldest known works of literature, lapis lazuli is mentioned several times. Cleopatra used ground lapis for eyeshadow and lapis is used for the eyebrows in Tutankhamen’s funeral mask. Renaissance and Baroque painters used ultramarine as the most special and expensive of tints, reserving it for the robes of the central character.

Although a synthetic version developed in the 19th century has diminished lapis’ role in tinting the world a vivid blue, its influence remains. The English work azure, French azur, Italian azzurro, Polish lazur and many others all come from the name and color of lapis lazuli.

Most lapis is speckled with calcite (white), sodalite (blue) and pyrite (metallic yellow).

Kyanite is a polymorph with two other minerals; andalusite and sillimanite. A polymorph is a mineral that shares the same chemistry with another mineral, but has a different crystal structure.
