Spector 360 Watches Everything Your Employees Do

Spector 360, a 2008 PCMag Editor's Choice from SpectorSoft, has a new 2010 version. Like before, this tool for keeping tabs on employees across an entire company "captures everything" from what's sent and viewed to even what's typed and printed, and provides reports its findings to you, the boss.

This version has new features such as policy-based events (ei: tell Spector 360 to look for searches of specific words and you'll get alerted), a new administration console, it'll work with 64-bit systems and Lotus Notes/Domino, auto updating on new computers on the network, and the ability to run on thousands of PCs at once, feeding data to a central server. It costs $1,995 for 15 licenses, or $2,995 for 25 licenses, and both come with one year of premium maintenance. The software runs on all Windows OSes.

Coming Soon: Google Buzz for Work

The big news today is the unveiling of Google Buzz, the search company's attempt to take back a little of that sweet, sweet social networking that Facebook and Twitter seem to own. It crams all sorts of social tools into Gmail. And since Gmail is also a big part of the Google Apps suite, it's not surprising that Google Buzz will also be coming to businesses and schools.

At the launch, Google spokesman said that internal testing of Buzz has changed the way they communicate at Google. Now, they might have said the same thing about Google Wave and that's not burning up the Internet with its popularity at home or the office; but tying this into just about every social networking site and tool you can imagine has some serious promise. Read the full scoop on what is coming for now at PCMag News.

GSM Carriers Get Router Option from Netgear & Ericsson

Netgear's MBRN3300E 3G Mobile Broadband Router with internal 3G radio is now available. Just not to you. Yet. This first in a new line of Wi-Fi routers that can use a HSPA wireless connection for backhaul will be made available to wireless carriers first. They can rebrand it with their name and sell it to you. Ericsson provides the radios inside the router that handle mobile wireless connectivity. The Wi-Fi side is 2x2 802.11n in 2.4GHz band, with all the extras, including Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) support and 4 Fast Ethernet ports.

The MBRN3300E specifically supports 7.2 Megabits per second backhaul. Other models will be coming supporting 3.6 and 21 Mbps. They'll all be identical in looks. And since it's a GSM-based tech, it works with over 360 networks around the world. In the United States, that's AT&T and T-Mobile, but that's not to say either of them has signed on yet to carry this router. Netgear did not announce any partners or pricing (though with carrier subsidies, it could be close to free). In fact, they can't guarantee it would even be available in 2010; it all depends on the operators buying in.

Google Apps Admins Can Control Policy Enforcement on Phones

Policy enforcement lets big businesses make sure systems that connect to the corporate network are allowed and behaving themselves. But what happens when that data is all in the cloud, like for companies that are using Google Apps? Google began to address this with items like a Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and the Google Sync ability for phones like the Nokia E Series, the iPhone, and devices running Windows Mobile. As of today, the admins running Google Apps Premier and Education Edition get even more control.

In fact, what can be accessed in Google Apps by those latter handsets (iPhone, Nokia E, and Windows Mobile) can be managed right from the Google Apps admin control panel. It doesn't require any special software on the devices, yet the admins can remotely wipe all Google Apps data on the handhelds the next time a lost/stolen device tries to sync, can lock the handset out after a certain amount of inactivity, and can require a password with a minimum length and strength.

Google Apps administrators should look for the settings in the Mobile tab. The Official Google Enterprise Blog says these features are coming soon to devices running its own Android OS, including the Droid and the Nexus One.

Sun CEO Resigns Via Twitter

The future of corporate communications? 140 characters,
apparently. The now former CEO of Sun Microsystems made history this week by
offering up his resignation via Twitter. "Financial crisis/Stalled too many
customers/CEO no more," Jonathan Schwartz told the world, haiku-style.

The resignation came in the wake of Oracle's purchase of Sun.
According to The New York Times, "Oracle's chief executive, Larry Ellison, is
not especially fond of Mr. Schwartz. In an interview last week, Mr. Ellison
said he fully expected Mr. Schwartz to resign rather than play a role in the
combined company."

Schwartz served as the head of Sun since 2006.

[This post originally appeared on Appscout.com]

Cloud Computing, Wireless Makes Now Right Time for iPad in Business

Apple may have energized the tablet market at the right time. Tablets have always had marginal success. Two hot technology trends make now the time for tablet success especially in business: ubiquitous Wi-Fi and cloud computing.

Advances in Wi-Fi have made unfettered, portable computing the norm. The days of the traditional business desktop/laptop client anchored in place by an Ethernet cable are coming to a close. It's evolving to a point in which servers, back-end systems, and storage devices will be all that gets wired in a business network.

As for cloud computing; many traditionally on-premise IT services are moving to the cloud; making them Web-accessible and platform-independent. This is why the iPad's inability to multitask won't be a hindrance for businesses primarily using Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or other cloud-based offerings: less dependency on a machine's local processing power.

And yes, neither the iPad, the host of soon-to-spring up competitors, nor current tablets are for heavy-duty tasks like CAD or database querying. That's not any tablet's purpose. Where they have made and will continue to make corporate headway are in any business with employees on the go: healthcare, sales reps, techs in the field, and businesses involved in transport like trucking outfits.

Another big potential market? Education. Many are already eagerly anticipating the e-Reader capability of the iPad as replacing textbooks, saving the backs of students everywhere.

Of course, down the line, for true embracing by these verticals, Apple will have to address issues pertaining to security, lack of Flash, integration with Windows applications as well as with Line-Of-Business applications. We saw Apple cater to corporate interest when it honed iPhone support for Microsoft Exchange. Further tweaking by Apple of the iPad to make it more business-friendly is not a preposterous notion.

Keep in mind however: iPhone IT support increased from 0 to over 20 percent
in two years in small-to-mid size businesses. If the iPad follows suit,
adoption in the office is going to cost you.

Survey Finds Video Conferencing Use on the Rise

A recent survey sponsored by Global IP Solutions found that business professionals in the United States, Japan, South Korea and China are rapidly adopting video conferencing for business and personal use. According to Global IP Solutions the survey reveals the increasing value of video in business communication and the need to eliminate quality issues such as video lag and freezing.
