GFI Software Launches GFI MailEssentials Complete

GFI Software has released GFI MailEssentials Complete, an all-in-one software solution for the SMB that combines anti-spam, anti-phishing, and email security in one product. Customers can deploy MailEssentials in the delivery model of their choice: on premises as a physical or virtual device, or as a hosted service.

According to GFI, the solution as an appliance is designed to be up and running in 15 minutes. The virtual appliance is targeted for those who want to provision a virtual server in lieu of adding an extra appliance to their infrastructures. With hosted MailEssentials Complete, businesses get not only the full-featured MailEssentials product, but also an email continuity service through which they can access and send email if their internal infrastructure is offline.

"SMBs are demanding in how they deploy email security solutions. They want a solution that best meets their needs and best works within their IT infrastructure," said Alex Eckelberry, general manager of GFI's Security Business Unit. "Whether it's on-premise software installed on the mail server, a physical or virtual gateway appliance, a hosted service or a hybrid of all delivery models, organizations want increased flexibility, continuity and redundancy from their email security strategies. With MailEssentials Complete, we are providing customers with access to solutions how they want them."

Microsoft Exec: "Hidden Google Tax"

In a post on the "Why Microsoft" blog,Tom Rizzo, senior director of Microsoft Online Services, wrote on what he deems "the hidden Google tax." According to Rizzo's post, there are so many hidden costs for those running Google Aps that it's "tantamount to paying a tax."

Microsoft's Online Services team interviewed more than 90 small and medium-sized businesses across five countrues. The team claims that they found that organizations that have evaluated Google Apps have found that the projected versus actual costs of switching to Google Apps greatly increase their total cost of ownership (TCO). The three general areas where organizations feel the hidden costs are greatest are in the areas of deployment, IT support costs and user training.

Rizzo writes, "For example, Google Marketplace lists an Exchange to Google Apps Migrator that costs $20 per user. The cost increases greatly when people migrate data other than email. The patchwork quilt approach to shoring up Google Apps can be costly, and it fails to deliver the integrated experience most end users expect." He mentions that most for 9 out to the 10 companies surveyed, Google Apps is used in parallel to Office. and that tech anayst firm Gartner confirms that the vast majority of enterprises will continue to standardize on Microsoft Office, while they only evaluate free trials of Google Apps, and do not intend to spend money on deployments.

Rizzo also criticizes the fact that Google does not offer 24x7x365 support and goes on to write that Google Apps offer very basic functionality; lacking consistent document conversion and import/export capabilities.Per Rizzo, this is because Google Apps are entirely HTML-based, users can experience substantial formatting problems and potential data loss during data and document migrations and conversions.

Microsoft FUD or absolute fact? What's your preference, Google Apps or Microsoft Office? Tell us in the comments.

If you're a small business owner or individual looking to create professional, personalized apps for mobile devices without cost, advertising interruption, or a steep a learning curve: rejoice. Appsbar, available now as a beta, gives you the tools you need to compete in an app-driven business world.

Appsbar enables you to edit and publish apps for Windows 7 Mobile, Gogole Android, and Apple iOS. Designed to guide users through the entire process--from app creation to editing to publication--Appsbar builds apps page by page, adding layers of complexity with each step. Users can customize colors, fonts, images, videos, menus, forms, and event notifications. There are even filters that alert you if you're adding or missing something that could prevent your app from publishing.

Appsbar comes preloaded with templates, called App Types. You can build an app for business, entertainment, or personal use, or start fresh with the custom option. For each page, you choose a different layout, including Photo or Video Galleries (self explanatory), Content (text or photos), Forms (multiple choice, text, or drop-down lists), Events (support names, dates, times, costs, and descriptions), and Social Links (feeds to Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, YouTube, and MySpace). When you're finished, you can publish your app with the click of a button; Appsbar projects that--pending approval--your app will go live within two weeks.

Whether you're a self-professed geek or luddite, Appsbar provides a free, easy way to gain a mobile presence. Take a look at some of the apps people have already published using the beta.
Business Bits: Behavioral Targeting, Boosting Cloud Speed, and More

4 Ways Behavioral Targeting Is Changing the Web
Even if you don't know the definition of behavioral targeting, you've probably experienced it while using Facebook, Twitter, or a number of other sites and services. Have you ever visited a site and it displayed an ad, or a suggested friend, as though it read your mind? That's behavioral targeting. Mashable explains the technology, and how it's changing the state of the Web.

Yottaa Uses the Cloud to Boost Site Speed
Yottaa, a Cambridge-based, Web-performance startup, announced its Yottaa Optimizer service, which the company promises will improve Web site performance by leveraging a worldwide cloud server network. Yotta states that the service delivers results "with just a few clicks," which would make it a very solid alternative for Web site operators who lack the knowledge or resources to utilize content delivery networks such as Akamai or Limelight Networks. GigaOm has the story.

Visa Backs Jack Dorsey's Square
Square, a San Francisco-based startup that lets anyone accept credit card payments through mobile devices, announced it had received an undisclosed amount of investment money from Visa. Square's small credit card readers, which attach to mobile devices, already let people accept payments from Visa as well as other cards. The Wall Street Journal takes a look.

Making the Most of 'Contact Us' to Gather Leads
If your business has a Web site, you must have a "Contact Us" page. It makes it simple for others to contact someone on your team, but it can help you gather leads. Are you making the most of your contact page? Entrepreneur reports.

Get on the Online Coupon Train! On Second Thought, Maybe Not

I've seen plenty of horror stories from blog posts to articles by other publications about small businesses feeling that they were bamboozled by online coupon companies. Deals from Groupon, Living Social, Tenka, Foursquare Specials, Facebook Deals
(shall I go on?) offer users big savings and sometimes even free stuff.
In return, the businesses who dish up the deals get some promotion and
new customers or clients, who perhaps will turn into repeat customers.

The
problem is that these deals can be very expensive for businesses. Small
business owners are being lured into online coupon campaigns and
special offers without doing their homework regarding what the promotion
may cost them. For example, a deal that gives consumers a 50 percent
discount may actually come back to the business as a 75 percent
discount, after the coupon company takes its cut. If your business
doesn't have a 75 percent mark-up, every customer presents a loss, which
may still be worthwhile if viewed as an advertising opportunity.
However, multiply the loss by literally thousands of people who jump on
the deal, and the effect could be ruinous.

As with any online
opportunity (scratch that: "any opportunity whatsoever") business owners
need to consider not just what it will cost them, but also whether and
how it fits into their larger business plan. And as a gentle reminder to
start-ups: You have a business plan, right?

All business
plans nowadays need to include a section about online presence. If you
have a web site (which you should), you'll need a statement about its
purpose. Will you use live chats for customer support? Will you monitor
what's being said about your company and competitors on Twitter? How
will you use the web for promotion and business growth? And how much of
your budget will be dedicated to these issues? How much are you willing
to spend or even lose, based on what you know of spenders in your
market? (One rule of thumb: Online deals tend to work out better for businesses in the services industries rather than product retail.)

All these technology items need to be considered and
monitored. Build them into your business plan early when you can. And if
your business plan is past its prime, consider updating a few sections
before you embark on the online coupon voyage.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Wall Street Journal, Michael Dell explains where the company intends to grow, why's he's both surprised by and excited about tablets, and how the sluggish economy may be good for Dell.

With a stabilized PC business, the 46-year-old executive says the PC is just one part of the company's broader portfolio of products and services.

"Two-thirds of Dell's profit is not the PC. Of the one-third that is the PC, the vast majority of that is not consumer," Dell told the WSJ. "We're investing a lot in our products. But is the fundamental epicenter of the company going to change from enterprise solutions, services, data centers, storage, virtualization, security? No. But we want to participate in many markets. Consumer is one of them."

One way that Dell has expanded its product portfolio is through acquisition. While rival Hewlett-Packard manage to snatch up 3PAR, Dell secured data-storage company Compellenet Technologies Inc. for $960 million last December. A year earlier, the Texas-based technology company lassoed services provider Perot Systems Corp. for nearly $4 billion.

Dell explained the logic of the investments as he predicted more "small-to-medium-size acquisitions" in the future: "Look at all the companies Dell has acquired in the last four years. They're all focused in the new areas I've been talking about: storage, services, data center, security, virtualization, networking, software, enterprise."

Of those "new areas," the tablet computer inspired the most excitement from the young executive. While Dell admits that he didn't fully anticipate the tablet's meteoric rise, he's enthusiastic about its growthalongside existing tech.

"What's interesting [is that] business users are not going to give up smartphones. Won't give up PCs. So now you have a PC, you have a smartphone and you have a tablet. Sounds pretty good. Industry growth," said Dell. "What's also interesting is Apple's great success with the iPhone. Android comes along, even greater success. I think you'll see the same thing on tablets, with enormous numbers of Android tablets with Dell certainly playing a role in that as well."

What role Dell will play in the burgeoning market remains untold, as the company has struggled to make a place for its Streak line of tablets.

The interview closes on Michael Dell's assessment of the economic recovery. While he identifies "healthy trends" in business solutions, he admits that budgetary issues pose challenges. However, for a relentlessly optimistic young CEO, challenges reveal opportunities, because, "when budgets are constrained, it causes people to look for ways to save money and many times that's using more IT."

Tip: Wipe or Destroy Copier Hard Drives

Seeing as it's time for spring cleaning, and with Earth Day right around the corner, many businesses are scheduling an annual day of recycling old equipment and upgrading to newer models.

Following on a post from earlier this week about Avoiding the Most Common SMB IT Mistakes, which included tips about how to properly dispose of old computers and gadgets, we wanted to dive a little deeper into one area of tech recycling: copiers, or all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machines.

If you own or manage a mid- to large-sized business, you probably lease your copier rather than own it. About a year ago, CBS aired an exposé of a security threat regarding these machines. The enterprise-sized models usually contain a hard drive, which stores all the data that passes through them. Shred paper documents all you want, if the information passed through the copier/scanner/fax machine, it's stored in the hard drive.

The problem is when these machines are leased, businesses owners and managers don't take measures to ensure that the hard drives are wiped or destroyed before the machines go back to the leasing company--who often resell them. If the hard drive remains in the copier, the next customer has access to all the sensitive information that was scanned, faxed, and copied while you leased the copier. Think of what passes through that machine: employee identification, such as passports and social security numbers, invoices, financial statements, credit card statements from T&E reports, and more.

PCMag's Security Watch blog responded to the CBS report with the following advice:

"What if your printer does contain a hard drive--what should you do before selling or giving it away? ... [W]hen the hard drive is an optional component, you'll generally find it easy to remove. Those with sufficient skills may be able to mount the drive in a PC and use secure file deletion software to wipe out any data beyond the possibility of recovery. Of course you could also just remove and destroy the hard drive before disposing of the printer.

"If the printer has a fully integrated hard drive that can't be removed, and if the vendor doesn't supply any sort of utility to wipe that drive, you're pretty much out of luck. You can cross your fingers and hope the recipient doesn't skim your data out of the printer. Or you can trash the hard drive even at the expense of turning the printer into e-waste."

Whether your business leases or owns its copiers, make sure you have candid conversations with the supplier about the hard drive and your options for keeping or destroying the data that's on them.

Touted benefits include faster access speed, improved performance and better data protection.

The Egnyte-enhanced ReadyNAS Pro automatically synchronizes the online cloud with a local ReadyBAS Pro. As a hybrid solution, it allows users to access, share and collaborate from any location, and can be integrated into existing directory services to further streamline management.

The two companies are highlighting the team effort as particularly beneficial for VARs and that it gives resellers a recurring revenue stream. It also eliminates the channel conflict inherent in pure cloud-based offerings.

Existing users of ReadyNAS Pros can access the Egnyte Office Local Cloud by updating their firmware.

Avoiding the Most Common SMB IT Mistakes

For small businesses, technology can be a blessing and burden. Just as easily as you can take advantage of exciting new tools, taming all that IT can turn into a second full-time job. While plenty of SMBs haven't quite struck a balance, you can learn from others' mistakes. In his Top 12 IT Mistakes Most Small Companies Make, Symantec's small biz expert Steve Strauss posts a list of the most common IT missteps, and how you can avoid making them yourself. (To read the post, you'll either need an account or you'll have to sign up for one). Here are my five favorite takeaways:

Safeguard information. One breach can spell ruin, and with employees living off laptops and mobile phones, there are plenty of opportunities for breaches. Instead of focusing on devices, however, concentrate on information: where is it stored and how is it protected? Enforce password management: strong passwords help protect data whether it's on a desktop, laptop, or mobile phone.

Don't wait for disaster. Downtime doesn't come cheaply. Symantec estimates that the median cost of downtime for an SMB is $12,500 per day. No matter the disruption, backup and recovery plans can be put into place today. Map out a disaster preparedness plan that identifies critical resources and includes identification and archival of important files.

Schedule backups. Speaking of archiving important files, archive, and archive regularly. All it takes is one lost invoice list to cause countless headaches. Whether you're doing it manually with a local hard disk or through an online scheduled service, do it, and do it often. Symantec recommends once a week, though, if you have vital data, you can't go wrong with a daily backup.

(Properly) trash old tech. It's not uncommon to dwell on new purchases and, when the time comes time to dispose of the old, simply take it to the dumpster. The problem is, this action is not only terrible for the environment--adding potentially toxic material to landfills--it's equally noxious to your business--exposing your sensitive data to others. Before you trash it, check with the manufacturer. Or consider formatting the device and donating it to charity: in addition to doing right, you'll take away a tax deduction.

Look big. The Internet is the great equalizer: in addition to letting you sell anywhere, anytime, to anyone, with the web, you can look just as big as your competitors. That perception begins with a professional, well designed website. Take a look at online site-creation services that let you build a site from professional templates, or, if your budget permits, seek out a contract designer with a Craigslist ad.

A single QlikView user license can be deployed on premise, in the cloud, or on a laptop or mobile device. In other words, it doesn't cost anything to extend QlikView to any mobile device.

In addition, the HTML 5-based QlikView on iPad offers IT departments enterprise-level governance over the app. This is in contrast to traditional native mobile business-intelligence app that poses manageability and security risks because users can download and update apps on their own.
