Privacy and security are two sweet words, especially for those who want it in their lives. Since the Internet came along, you need to become aware of a whole lot of things you’d once have thought useless. If you’re someone who owns multiple computers on which people come to surf the web, do research and stuff, you really could do with some monitoring software so you can keep the entire network, and the computers they connect, safe from viruses and wrongful copying of files that don’t belong to certain people. What you’re going to read about here is a software called WhoIsConnected, and it doesn’t get simpler than that. It helps you keep track of a network and all the users who are on it at any given time. You’ll read something about the benefits and all that you receive in terms of personal power over a situation. No longer can you be ignorant of a viral attack on your network or worry about people doing illegal stuff on it. Everything is noticed, giving you time to act. Besides, the fun part shouldn’t be forgotten. Imagine what you can do with this software to connect gamers and see what each one is up to as well. The possibilities with this simple online tool are huge. And it’s free too!

WhoIsConnected functions on these operating systems: Mac and Windows 2000/NT/XP. Apart from keeping you posted on, well, who is connected, this software also brings up open resources on the network, so you can see what’s going on too. The power is yours to connect or close any connection or open resource at your leisure, sans the need to get the permission of the users you shortlist to be shown the exit. From where you sit, you can gain control of processes and turn them around as you feel necessary for protection and other reasons. If you’re on Windows XP or 2003, you can get to see open IP (Internet Protocol) ports too.

Now, let’s take an in-depth look at this other feature of WhoIsConnected, namely the ‘Disable Login’ feature. This one can only be used on a Mac OS (Operating System), so be sure of that before proceeding to check it out. The usefulness of this command is amazing. Now, most of us know pretty well that human nature isn’t all that honorable in certain people and they take advantage of a ripe situation which more often than not involves the unfortunate party being distracted with serious or crucial work.

What ‘Disable Login’ does is it allows you the ability to thwart users from logging in when you are busy catering to network health with work like repairing certain features and programming, uploading software and/or backing up files for safekeeping. These responsibilities as the network owner can’t be avoided and now you get to do it securely. Besides, added danger comes in the form of users’ ignorance of what you may be busy doing and so they come online and perform certain actions that delay or sidetrack you or even cause a troubleshooting issue or two to arise in the network. And all this by a user’s ignorance, which they can’t be blamed for!

Okay, you may ask: what of the fellers who’re already logged in? Well, they remain unaffected at this time, so no worries there. If one of them decides to log out, then they’ve to wait until you’ve enabled login for them to get back in again. Before such software came to town, network owners needed to shut down the server or disable the network connection to prevent people from connecting to shared folders. With WhoIsConnected you can act upon user-actions without any of the above hassles.

By merely clicking on the small computer icon on the program, you initiate the ‘Disable Login’ command, and anyone who tries accessing afterward gets the error message: The remote server has been paused or is in the process of being started. How polite! WhoIsConnected may have a similarity in function to NetShareMonitor, but the former gives you power to keep shared folders from being accessed, while the latter only notifies you when it happens. You do the math. Soon you’ll agree that WhoIsConnected is quite the useful tool, one that does indeed pack a punch and gives you security features to be envied. Don’t forget, it’s free!

Initially, iTunes started out as a program called SoundJam MP, which after being purchased by Apple, became the base for the popular iTunes as we know it today. As Apple has grown and expanded into other markets and innovative platforms, they have brought iTunes along with them to include TV, Movies and even Games. Each new product line from Apple brings further amendments to iTunes, and sometimes even hints as to what future products Apple might release.

Apple lovers would definitely stick to iTunes but Windows users would think that iTunes is one big bloat for a media player. If for some reason iTunes cannot be uninstalled properly on Windows computer, you can do it with iTunes Removal Tool called ByeTunes. All you need to do is run the tool and click Yes asked to confirm on removing iTunes. Explorer.exe process will be terminate and clicking the I Agree button will start the removal of iTunes. It removes services from the registry, terminate process, unregister and remove DLLs, remove registry traces, program from startup, files, uninstall information, quick launch shortcut, start menu shortcut, desktop shortcut and directories.

ByeTunes is a portable single executable file which can be ran without any dependencies. ByeTunes was last updated on Sep 5, 2007 but it worked on our computer during testing. By the way this tool is called ByeTunes and not Bye iTunes.

ASK is one of the top search engine but it is not as famous as Google, Yahoo or Bing. It was previously known as Ask Jeeves but now has been renamed to ASK. One annoying thing about ASK.com is the bundled toolbar with many software such as Nero, ZoneAlarm, SkyDownloader, VDownloader and many more. If a user did not read the agreements carefully during software installation and simply click on the Agree button, they will end up with an ASK toolbar replacing the browser’s home page and also search bar.

Fortunately ASK.com toolbar is not a spyware and it can be easily uninstalled from Add or Remove Programs in Windows XP or Programs and Features in Windows 7. If for some reason that you facing problems with the uninstallation, you can use ASK Toolbar Remover.

ASK Toolbar Remover has been designed specifically to remove every last trace of the entries of the Ask Toolbar. This portable free ask.com toolbar removal tool is used to facilitate its removal but not to advice you to remove it. All you need to do is run the executable file and click Execute Removal button.

Vinyl and cassette tapes are the things in the past and now has been replaced by CD, DVD and even probably blu-ray. Many old school DJs that were using vinyl many years ago has also started to scratch on discs rather than vinyls. If you have many vinyls or cassette tapes, you can create a backup by recording them to MP3 on your computer. One of such software that can easily help you achieve that is LP Recorder.

LP Recorder is a shareware that normally cost $39.95. All you need to do to record vinyl is connect the tape or line output from your stereo to the line input of your soundcard, select the recording input, enter a filename and press the record button. For a time limited, you can download the full version of LP Recorder for free and this promo expires on 11 June 2010.

Do note that when you try to run LRSetup.exe in Windows 7, you will get the error “Version 10.0 LP Recorder or later is required for Windows 7″ This can easily be bypassed by right clicking on LRSetup.exe file, select Properties, go to Compatibility tab and check “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”.

You will see that the email is sent from iTunes Online Products (your.support@itunes.com) with the subject “Thank you for buying iTunes Gift Certificate!”. As for the body, below is the exact message that you will see.

Hello!

You have received an iTunes Gift Certificate in the amount of $50.00
You can find your certificate code in attachment below.

Then you need to open iTunes. Once you verify your account, $50.00 will be credited to your account, so you can start buying music, games, video right away.

iTunes Store.

The attachment on the email received is Gift_Certificate_151.exe with an icon that looks exactly the same as Microsoft Word document. The good thing is 31 out of 41 antivirus engine has detected it as a threat. This attachment is a trojan that secretly downloads a file called tulb.exe from a russian domain and the tulb.exe file tries to establish a connection to an IP address at Netherlands.

If you have received such email, delete the email immediately and DO NOT open the attachment. If you have accidentally ran the attachment, run a full scan using your antivirus to remove the trojan.

Microsoft realized the usefulness of Show Desktop shortcut icon and it isn’t really removed in Windows 7. By default Windows 7 comes with a Show Desktop button at the end of the taskbar. However if Windows 7 users that misses the good old Show Desktop icon that you find in Quick Launch toolbar in Windows XP, the easiest and fastest way to get it back is by pinning a portable Show Desktop application. RealityTouchDesign has created the application which really does nothing other than showing the desktop when clicking it once and then clicking it again brings back all the windows that was covering the desktop.

The Show Desktop application weighs less than 1MB of file size and once finished downloading, you can simply right click on the executable file and select Pin to Taskbar. The Show Desktop icon will now appear in the taskbar all the time and clicking on it will minimize all windows and brings you straight to desktop.

You can download Show Desktop from the link below and the file is compressed in RAR format. You can use 7-Zip or WinRAR to extract the file.

The Show Desktop icon from quick launch toolbar for previous versions of Windows such as XP is really useful and convenient. However when it comes to Windows 7, many users though that the Show Desktop feature is gone since the quick launch toolbar has been removed. However, it is in fact still available which is located at the bottom right corner of the taskbar after the time and date. You will see a small short bar and clicking on it will show the Desktop.

This change by Microsoft has gotten a mixed reactions as some users complained that the Show Desktop is too far as a user normally stays around the Windows 7 start menu. If for some reason you do not want the Show Desktop button in Windows 7 showing in the bottom right of the taskbar, you can use the Windows 7 Show Desktop Button Remover to hide the button.

The Windows 7 Show Desktop Button Remover is a simple and portable tool which allows you do to just that, which is to remove or add show desktop button in Windows 7. By simply clicking a button on the tool, the changes is taken effect immediately without require to reboot.

There are times when those small thumbnails shown in Facebook are just too small for you to identify if your friend’s friend is someone you know or not. Instead of clicking on the facebook user link to go to the user’s page and see the bigger profile photo, you can instead install Facebook PhotoZoom, a useful extension available for Firefox and Chrome browser.

After installing Facebook PhotoZoom extension, there is nothing for you to configure or do. Whenever you hover your mouse cursor to a profile picture or album photos, the tooltip will appear with the bigger image in it. If the image that the user uploaded is bigger than the thumbnail, then this plugin will show the full size of the image. Other than that, while viewing the photo album, it would be more productive when you use the Photo Zoom to view the images that you want in bigger size rather than going into the single image view. This allows you to skip the images that you want to see and load saving you time and bandwidth.

The Google Chrome version of Facebook Photo Zoom has a shortcut key to easily toggle the feature on or off by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + Z key.

Google search engine is the best in the world because of the complex algorithm of the index bot. Recently Google has SSL search which gives a more secure search. When a website is secured with SSL, the traffic that is sent and received from the website is encrypted and decrypting SSL is nearly impossible as it will take many many years to do crack it.

When you are in your company where your internet connection goes through a proxy server, the network administrator is able to tell what sites you have been and even probably what have you searched for. That includes cybercafe and your internet service provider. The packets that are sent without SSL is a clear traffic and can be easily decoded to view what you are trying to search.

Using Google SSL to search is easy and all you need to do is use HTTPS instead of HTTP at the URL address. For example, the normal google search engine is http://www.google.com and the secured SSL Google search would be https://www.google.com. Many other Google services such as Gmail, and Adsense can be used with HTTPS SSL as well.

Most if not all operating system comes with a HOSTS file. In Windows, the hosts file is without an extension and it is located in Windows\system32\drivers\etc. By default the hosts file is blank with a few lines of examples being commented out. The HOSTS file is used to manually map hostname to IP address but not the opposite. It is useful to block out unwanted websites such as advertisements or spyware. It would also be useful when a webmaster has changed the IP address of the server and needs to immediately have the changes.

HOSTS file can get very big and unoptimized if the file is too large which might contain duplicated entries and also unusably commented lines. HostsOptimizer is a free, portable and simple to use tool that optimizes the Windows hosts file by rearranging the content to a maximum of 9 host names in a single line, removing comments and disabled entries and searching for duplicate host names.

HostsOptimizer can automatically detect the location of your HOSTS file and allows you to backup your original hosts file before optimizing it. If for some reason HostsOptimizer corrupts the HOSTS file, it can be restored to the version before optimization.

jv16 PowerTools 2009 is a Windows system utility suite which allows you to clean, optimize and repair your system with ease. The program offers a range of advanced tools that provide a safe yet powerful way of getting “under the hood” of your computer.

In the right hands, jv16 PowerTools 2009 is a very safe and powerful tool. Yet, even the most novice users can take benefit from its power if they just remember a few general rules. The most important thing to bear in mind is that you are the one who always makes the final decision, that’s why it’s very important that you don’t do anything with things you are not familiar with. For example, if there are some items in the Registry Manager or in the Registry Cleaner that you don’t know or can’t identify, it’s always the safest and best option to leave those items alone. jv16 PowerTools only makes suggestions based on its analysis. You always make the final decision, so you’ll have to know what you’re doing.

jv16 PowerTools 2009 normally cost $29.95 but you can get a free license offered by CHIP Online. All you need to do is click on the link below and then click on the blue colored button that says Zum Download. Then click on the Download-Server CHIP Online link which will then start to download the 5.92MB powertools.zip file. Extract the archive and run jv16pt191_setup_hb.exe to install. No serial number or license key to install because the attached license.xbin will automatically be used to register the software. This is a limited time offer so download jv16 PowerTools 2009 while you still can.
