It’s been a long time since I posted an entry here. I’ve been really wrapped up or consumed with my call center life so yeah. Let’s talk about mesothelioma, shall we? Without further ado then:

This must be the first time you’ve encountered the word mesothelioma, so if you dont have any idea what it is, I’m gonna tell you. It is actually a form of cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Individuals who developed this kind of disease have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles or have been exposed to asbestos dust and particles in other ways.

If you’re one of these individuals who developed this kind of disease because the asbestos manufacturers or your employers neglect the implementation of safety measures, you can actually file a lawsuit against them.

Mesothelioma laws can be very complex and you may want to find a mesothelioma law firm with mesothelioma experienced attorney who has a track record of success in mesothelioma lawsuits on your side through the entire claim process. Why is this important? Winning is important isn’t it? I mean, why would you file a lawsuit if you dont want to win.

Why just sit there and suffer from cancer when you can make those who made you suffer pay? Makes sense?

Many people feel that there’s one person out there who can enrich your life in a way that no one else can. If this is true, how can you increase your chances of finding this person? And when you meet him or her, how will you know it’s your soulmate?

Steps:

Be the person you would love to love. Instead of waiting for your soulmate to appear, make yourself the person you would like to find. Work on becoming the unique individual you’re looking for. Just as you would want your soulmate to be comfortable in their own skin, work on just being yourself. You’ll stand a better chance of getting noticed if you are comfortable, confident, and happy to be you. Expressing your individuality is the closest you can come to advertising your soulmate potential. Not only will you stand out, but you’ll also be doing things that are more likely to bring you closer to your soulmate, who probably has similar interests and goals.

Remember that your soulmate might not be what you expect. If there’s only one person in the world who can be your soulmate, what are the chances that they’ll live in your town, look like the people you grew up with, or even speak the same language? Your soulmate does not have to live in the same country or even the same hemisphere as you. Be willing to span the globe for your true love. Also, if you’re expecting your soulmate to be love at first sight, you might never find what you’re looking for. So keep an open mind. Part of the romance of having a soulmate is being pleasantly surprised.

Be patient. Fate doesn’t work on a schedule. Your soulmate might cross your path when you’re 8 or 80 years old. Don’t be surprised either if there is a considerable age difference between the two of you. Yes, you might look forward to spending the majority of your life with your soulmate - perhaps buying a house, getting married, starting a family - but things do not always go as you plan. Your soulmate will color your world no matter how old you are, so don’t rush into things, or else you might end up forcing the wrong person into the soulmate box, which will cause pain for everyone involved.

Accept people for who they are, not who you want them to be. When you’ve got all these fantasies flying around in your head about how wonderful and special your soulmate will be, it can be easy to look for those specific characteristics and features in anyone you get involved with. Unfortunately, unrealistic expectations can ruin a relationship, and might even chase your soulmate away. Whoever it is that you think might be your soulmate, appreciate their individuality and trust that if this person is your soulmate, they’ll never need to change who they are for you, just like you’ll never need to change who you are for them. That doesn’t mean that you can’t encourage them to try something new or help them to grow as people, just don’t force things on them that they are not comfortable with.

Weather the storms. Contrary to what popular media would have you believe, meeting your soulmate doesn’t guarantee “happily ever after.” Things won’t get easier when you find that special someone and in fact, they might get even harder. Ultimately, a soulmate is someone you can grow with, and the only way to grow together is to face challenges together. So if you put your heart and soul into a relationship, stick with it through the ups and downs, even when you question whether it’s meant to be, and you might look back decades later and realize that you were with your soulmate all along. True love with your soulmate does not grow on its own: it must be cultivated and continually nurtured. So be lovable, and be willing to love like there is no tomorrow.

Tips:

You need to find yourself before you find your soulmate. Once you’re happy with yourself, a soulmate will make you even happier, but no one can fill a void created by not knowing who you are. Only you can do that.

Don’t obsess over finding your soulmate. Coming off as needy and desperate for love is not attractive to a soulmate - nor anyone else, for that matter! Just be yourself, keep an open mind, and wait.

Warnings!

If you’re with someone who is manipulative or abusive in any way, rest assured that you are not with your soulmate. Even if you have been married for years, break it off as quickly as possible, or else you might never meet your soulmate because you’re too busy dealing with an unhealthy relationship.

This “one person in the whole world who is the one and only soulmate for you” idea might just be a load of hooey. Don’t waste your life looking for the perfect person, find ways to enjoy who you’re with (keeping in mind the previous warning).

Services You Can Disable

There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggest you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.

Some possibilities are:

Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer.

Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth.

Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network.

Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault.

Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off.

Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don’t need this if you have other software to create CDs.

Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.

IP SEC - Manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver. If you are not on a domain, you likely don’t need this running.

Messenger - Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This is how a lot of pop-up windows start appearing on your desktop.

Net Logon - Supports pass-through authentication of account logon events for computers in a domain. If you are not on a domain, you don’t need this running

Network DDE - Provides network transport and security for Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) for programs running on the same computer or on different computers.
NT LM Security Support Provider - Provides security to remote procedure call (RPC) programs that use transports other than named pipes.

Performance Logs and Alerts - Collects performance data from local or remote computers based on preconfigured schedule parameters, then writes the data to a log or triggers an alert. If you don’t need to monitor your performance logs, then you don’t need this service.
Portable Media Serial Number - Retrieves the serial number of any portable music player connected to your computer

QOS RSVP - Provides network signaling and local traffic control setup functionality for QoS-aware programs and control applets.

Remote Desktop Help Session Manager - Manages and controls Remote Assistance. If you are not using Remote Desktop you don’t need this service.

Remote Registry - Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer.

Routing & Remote Access - Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network environments. Allows dial-in access.

Secondary Login - Enables starting processes under alternate credentials. This is what allows you to run an application as another user.

Smart Card - Manages access to smart cards read by this computer.

Smart Card Helper - Enables support for legacy non-plug and play smart-card readers used by this computer.

SSDP Discovery Service - Enables discovery of UPnP devices on your home network.

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - Enables support for NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) service and NetBIOS name resolution. This should not be needed in today’s network environment.

Telnet - Enables a remote user to log on to this computer and run programs, and supports various TCP/IP Telnet clients.

Uninterruptible Power Supply Service - Manages an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to the computer.

Universal Plug and Play Device Host - Provides support to host Universal Plug and Play devices

Upload Manager - Manages synchronous and asynchronous file transfers between clients and servers on the network.

Volume Shadow Copy Service - Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup and other purposes.

Web Client - Enables Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify non-local files across the Internet.

Wireless Zero Configuration - Provides automatic configuration for the 802.11 adapters
WMI Performance Adapter - Provides performance library information from WMI HiPerf providers.
===============

Stopping the Messenger Service

To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your computer, you can disable the Messenger service.

Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services
Scroll down and highlight “Messenger”
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
Click the STOP button
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Faster DOS Printing
If you are experiencing slow printing for DOS programs with Windows2000
Go Start | Run | Regedit
Click Hkey_Local_Machine
Click on System
Click CurrentControlSet
Click Control
Go to the bottom of this part of the list and click WOW
Click LPT timeout and change it to a 3
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cleaning the Prefetch Directory

WindowsXP has a new feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut to recently used programs.
However it can fill up with old and obsolete programs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
To clean this periodically go to:
Star / Run / Prefetch
Press Ctrl-A to highlight all the files
Delete them
Not Displaying Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages
To turn these off:
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system
If it is not already there, create a DWORD value named DisableStatusMessages
Give it a value of 1
===============
Increasing the Folder Cache
The default setting for WindowsXP is to cache the Explorer settings for 400 folders.
To increase it:
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
Change the vaule of BagMRU to whatever size you want (hex)
1000 - 3e8
2000 - 7d0
3000 - bb8
4000 - fa0
5000 - 1388
You can Dowload a reg file that will set it for 5000
Increasing Graphics Performance
By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc to menu items.
Most simply slow down their display.
To turn these off selectively:
Right click on the My Computer icon
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Under Performance, click on the Settings button
To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance
My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under mouse pointer and Show window contents while dragging
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speeding Up the Display of Start Menu Items

An easy way to speed up the display of the Start Menu Items is to turn off the menu shadow.

Right click on an open area of the Desktop

Select Properties

Click on the Appearance tab

Click on the Effects button

Uncheck Show shadows under menus

Increasing System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance
by having the core system kept in memory.
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive
Set the value to be 1
Reboot the computer

Download Reg File
===============

Opening Shared Folders Snap-In

To manage all your shared folders, you can run the snap-in directly

Start / Run / fsmgmt.msc

This will show you all your shared folders in a single window

You can also see what other computers are connected and what files they have open

Viewing Your IP Address Information

There are several ways you can determine your IP address information:

IPCONFIG

Start / Run / cmd

Repairing Damaged Winsock2

The symptoms when Winsock2 is damaged show when you try to release and renew the IP address using IPCONFIG.

And you get the following error message:
An error occurred while renewing interface ‘Internet’: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Also Internet Explorer may give the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed Additionally, you may have no IP address or no Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address, and you may be receiving IP packets but not sending them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are two easy ways to determine if Winsock2 is damaged:
From the XP source files, go to the Support / Tools directory
Uninstall hidden XP apps
1. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\inf
2. Open the sysoc.inf file in Notepad or another plain text editor. If you can't find the inf directory, it's probably hidden. Unhide it. Click Tools and choose Folder Options. Under View, enable Show Hidden Files & Folders.
3. In sysoc.inf, look for the section called "components" in XP or "old base components" in 2000. What looks like a bunch of gibberish is actually pretty easy to read. You'll see a component name, followed by an equals sign, followed by a list of parameters separated by commas.
For example: Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,HIDE,7 The deal: the "HIDE" between the two last commas indicates a hidden component. Remove "HIDE" to unhide the component.
For example: Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7
4. Unhide any component you want.
5. Save the file.
Hiding ur user account on XP
Hopefully someone will find this useful. Ive done this on my machine as well.
To a hide an account to display on the welcome screen of xp here is a nifty way:
1. Open regedit
2. Browse to Hkey_local_machine> software>microsoft>windows nt>winlogon>special Accounts>Userlist
Here you will see a list of all accounts on XP which are hidden and dont display on welcome screen. Yes XP does create useless accounts as you see there.
3. Go on the right pane, right click, create a new dword value with its name as the exact username you want to hide and its value as "0" without the quotes.
Now if you have only one account on XP and you want to hide it, DO NOT DO THE ABOVE! READ BELOW AND FOLLOW A NEW PROCEDURE
If you do this accidently, it will make an infinite restart loop in your computer. If you accidently do it, then just login in safe mode and remove the value you just set in the regedit.
If you only have one account and want to do this, you will have to disable welcome screen & fast user switching in USERS in control panel.
What I did was: create a dummy limited account for people who want to access my machine sometimes. And I hided my own account using the proceedure mentioned.
To access this hidden account from the welcome screen press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and you can enter your username and password.
===============
Have you forgotten your password and you don't want to re-format your computer ? Well here's what you do..
Please note that this only works on Windows XP !
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY !
1. Restart you computer
2. When booting, press F8 and select "Safe Mode"
3. After getting to the user menu. Click on a user and this time it will not ask you for a password
4. Go to Start>Run and type CMD
5. At command prompt type in cd C:\Windows\System32, I am assuming C is your System/Windows Drive
6. For safety purposes first make a backup of your Logon.Scr file.. You can do this by typing in Copy to Logon.scr to Logon.bak
7. Then type copy CMD.EXE Logon.scr
8. Then type this command, I will assume that you want to set Administrator's password to MyNewPass
9. Now, type this in (I am assuming that you are still in the directory C:\Windows\System32): , net user administrator MyNewPass
10. You will get a message saying that it was successful, this means Administrator's new password is MyNewPass
11. Restart the PC and you will login as Administrator (or whatever you chose to reset) with your chosen password and Enjoy!
ReInstalling WindowsXP
If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
Start WindowsXP
Go to the location of your source files
Run WINNT32 /unattend
I've often need to do this to repair something that had gotten corrupted and didn't want to do a clean install.
===============
Stop Password Expiration
If you want to do this for all users, enter:
Start / Run / net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited
If you are getting an error message that your password is about to expire:
Right click on the My Computer icon
Select Manage
Go to Local Users and Groups / Users
Right-click on the user you want to change
Select Properties
On the General tab, check Password never expires
Click OK
===============
Repair Install
If XP is corrupted to the point where none of the previous solutions get it to boot, you can do a Repair Install that might work as well as keep the current settings. Make sure you have your valid WindowsXP key. The whole process takes about half an hour depending on your computer. If you are being prompted for the administrator's password, you need to choose the 2nd repair option, not the first.
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD
At the second R=Repair option, press the R key
This will start the repair
Press F8 for I Agree at the Licensing Agreement
Press R when the directory where WindowsXP is installed is shown. Typically this is C:\WINDOWS
It will then check the C: drive and start copying files
It will automatically reboot when needed. Keep the CD in the drive.
You will then see the graphic part of the repair that is like during a normal install of XP (Collecting Information, Dynamic Update, Preparing Installation, Installing Windows, Finalizing Installation)
When prompted, click on the Next button
When prompted, enter your XP key
Normally you will want to keep the same Workgroup or Domain name
The computer will reboot
Then you will have the same screens as a normal XP Install
Activate if you want (usually a good idea)
Register if you want (but not necessary)
Finish
At this point you should be able to log in with any existing accounts.
Change your Welcome (login) Screen
This tweak will only work if you have the "Use welcome screen" option activated in Control Panel>Users Accounts>Logon and Logoff Options.
1. Make a backup copy of C:\windows\system32\logonui.exe
2. Overwrite the file with your new login screen. (be sure to use the same file name as the old logonui.exe)
3. If you ever want to revert back to the old login screen, just overwrite C:\windows\system32\logonui.exe with your backup.
Enjoy!
Some edits and supplements
Windows System File Protection will not allow to override the file unless you follow these steps:
1. Rename the logonui.exe file in either C:\Windows\system32\dllcache or in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 (depends on if and how you installed the servicepack).
2. Copy your custom logonui.exe to this folder.
3. Boot into safe mode and do exactly the same (rename the original file and copy in your new one) in C:\Windows\system32. System File Protection will pop up two windows. Answer them with "cancel" and "yes".
Note: It is always better to rename the original file and not override it.
Alternatively you can use this method to change the Welcome screen :
1. Copy your custom logon file under another name, let's say logonuiA.exe, to C:\Windows\system32.
2. Open regedit (Always backup before changing anything in the registry) to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and change the value for UIHost to logonuiA.exe.
if you want a no-hassle replacement of Login Screens.. just download the free logonstudio by stardock..
Change XP Boot Screen
If you would like to change your boot up screen follow the directions below. These instructions assume that you have a place to download the boot screen from the net. If you would like to download a boot screen, visit http://www.themexp.org
1. Backup (copy) the file %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe (most likely C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe - the boot screen)
2. Download the .zip to your computer (important: make sure to get the right version, XP or XP SP1)
3. Extract ntoskrnl.exe to a directory other than %windir%\system32 (most likely C:\windows\system32)
4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (hit F8 before the boot screen) or into true DOS (from a boot disk)
5. Overwrite the file %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe (which should have been backed up) with the extracted exe
6. Reboot your computer as you normally would
Removing Thumbs.db Files
When viewing a folder with the Thumbnail view, WindowsXP creates a thumbs.db file. This is a cache of the current pictures in that directory. If you want to turn this feature off and save a little disk space
Start the Windows Explorer
Go to Tools / Folder Options / View
In the first section under Files and Folders, check Do not cache thumbnails
Now you can search for the thumbs.db file on your computer and remove them. No more should be created.
Faster WinXP Shutdown Options
When you shut down Windows XP, the OS tries its best to make sure that all services (they help run things like graphics, printers etc) are shut down. But there are times when they don't close, thus Windows XP tries to give it the chance to shut down itself. This amount of time that windows waits for the service to close is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will shut down the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:
1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
3. Click on the "Control" Folder.
4. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
5. Right click on it and select Modify.
6. Set it to a value lower than 2000, say 1000 as a test.
thanks at dami kong natutunan
anyway.. ask ko lang bakit ganun, kapag gumawa or nag-rename ako ng folder na name ang con .. ayaw.. any explanation?
~~~

dude lemme explain why..

"reserved device name" ung lumalabas pag nag-create ka ng file or folder named "con"

"con" has been one of the reserved filenames ever since MSDOS days (tsk tsk, halata tuloy yung edad ko, at alam ko pa 'to). It represents the console, i.e., output to monitor. Other examples are "prn" (the default printer, which you're probably a lot more familiar with) and "nul" (the null file). E.g., if you have a text file named "readme.txt" and you type the command "copy readme.txt con" it will have the same effect as "type readme.txt". This is similar to using "copy readme.txt prn" to print the file.

"Con" is the console, so it is reserved. You can include this on the list too:
AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN, NUL..

hope this helps.. B)

Have you ever wanted to just get rid of a system tray item, but not wanting to completely get rid of it? Or have you ever wanted to always see a certin icon in the System Tray? Well Its simple, and dosnt require any major editing on your part, and its completely safe. Just Do the Following:

1. Right Click on start, and select 'Properties'

2. Once in Properties, Select 'Taskbar'

3. Find the 'Customize...' Button, and press it.

4. Once the next screen comes up, find the icons you want/dont want. Click them, and click the drop down box. Select the option you want, and click ok. Do this to as many as you want.

And thats it. It is that simple. Have fun, and happy tweaking! B)

Changing Text On your XP start button
Step 1 - Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.

get this from h**p://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe.

The category we are going to be using is "String Table". Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable. We're going to modify item 578, currently showing the word "start" just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word "start" so that it's highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you'll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used Click Me!

You'll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out is now active. I won't get into what's involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it's going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command - Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.

Step 2 - Modify the Registry

!!!make a backup of your registry before making changes!!!

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it's necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don't know how to access the registry I'm not sure this article is for you, but just in case it's a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane, double click the "Shell" entry to open the Edit String dialog box. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that's your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

Internet Explorer lightning-fast startup

Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load?

This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]:

1. 1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE

[You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon]

2. Click Properties

3. Add -nohome [with a space before the dash] after the endquotes in the Target field.

4. Click OK

Fire up IE from your modified shortcut, and be amazed by how fast you are able to use IE!

~~~
an alternative way is to install firefox… hehehee
~~~

..well of course if u installed firefox..
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Make FireFox Faster
1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
and browser.turbo.enabled
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. (Max can only be 8, but people report 30. The 30 open connections is incorrect)
Set “browser.turbo.enabled” to “true”
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.
4. FOR XP USERS SEEKING FASTER FIREFOX LOADTIMES: Within the Firefox “shortcut” icon properties add /Prefetch:1 (outside the quotation marks) of the ‘target. For example: my target is “D:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” /Prefetch:1
If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now!
The program is called BootVis
Uncompress the file.
Run BOOTVIS.EXE
For a starting point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.
Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the red vertical line)
Then run Trace / Optimize System
Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays
Note how much the time has decreased
Mine went from approximately 39 to 30 seconds.
Identify Faulty Device Drivers
If you are having problems with lockups, blue screens, or can only get to safe mode, often the problem is due to a faulty device driver.
One way to help identify them is through the use of the Verfier program
Start / Run / Verifier
Keep the default of Create Standard Settings
Select the type of drivers you want to confirm
A list of drivers to be verified on the next boot will be shown.
Reboot
If your computer stops with a blue screen, you should get an error message with the problem driver
To turn off the Verifier, run verifier /reset
Hide Drives and Partitions
Do you have data on a partition or hard drive that you don’t want tampered with or easily accessible to other users? Well, you can hide any drive/partition in Windows XP, NT, and 2000. That means that they won’t show up in Explorer or My Computer.
If you want access to that drive from your user account you should create a desktop shortcut before proceeding. Once hidden, you can still access by typing the drive letter and a colon in Start/Run-for example, “D:” will bring up a folder of the contents on your D drive.
The easiest way with Win XP is to use the TweakUI power toy from Mcft. Go to Start/Run and type in “tweakui” (without the quotes).
Go to My Computer/Drives and uncheck the drive/partition(s) you want hidden. Click “Apply” or “OK” when finished.
If you have XP but not Tweak UI you can download it here…
http://www.Mcft.com/windowsxp/downloads/po…ppowertoys.mspx
For Win NT, 2000, and XP you can use the following Registry edit:
*Be sure to back up the Registry before proceeding
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/401
Open the Registry Editor by going to Start/Run and typing in “regedit” (without the quotes). Find your way to…
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mcft\Windows\CurrentVer sion\Policies
Click on “Explorer”.
Double-click the “NoDrives” key in the right column. If you don’t find a “NoDrives” registry key, just right-click in the right pane and choose “New/DWORD Value” then name the key “NoDrives”.
You’ll see a value like “0000 00 00 00 00″. This is where the fun starts. The four sets of double zeros (after the “0000″) are where you’ll enter the values for the drive/partitions. Now, stay with me on this-it’s not as complicated as it sounds:
The first column is for drives A-H, the second for I-P, the third for Q-X, and the fourth for Y-Z.
The values for each drive are as follows:
1 - A I Q Y
2 - B J R Z
4 - C K S
8 - D L T
16 - E M U
32 - F N V
64 - G O W
80 - H P X
So, let’s say you want to hide drive D. In the first column you would put “08″. For drive K you would put “04″ in the second column.
But what if you want to hide more than one drive in a column? Simply add the values together: D+E = 8+16 = 24. So in the first column you would put “24″.
Still baffled? If you have XP then go get TweakUI and save yourself the math.
Whichever method you use, you can rest easy knowing that the files on that drive or partition are less accessible to other users.
===============
here’s another good tip:
Turn off Indexing to speed up XP
Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then I suggest turnning this feature off:
1. Control Panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. Services
4. Disable Indexing Services
hope this hleps… :cool:
Watch movies with ‘AboveNormal’ priority
This tweak will launch WindowsMediaPlayer with the ‘AboveNormal’ priority setting when opening a mediafile.
Having trouble watching a movie when you also have a lot of background processes going on?
Here’s what to do:
1. Create a new textfile in the root of c:\, but instead of giving it the .txt extension you name it wmp_AboveNormal.bat
2. Right-click this file and choose ‘Edit’, you’ll see it’ll open notepad. Put this line in:
start /AboveNormal C:\”Program Files”\”Windows Media Player”\wmplayer.exe %1 %*
3. Save (make sure you save it as .bat, not as .txt) and close.
Now all you have to do is register your mediafiles to this batchfile. Here’s how to do that:
4. In Windows Explorer choose Tools>Folder Options >File Types
5. Scroll down(press A) to the AVI filetype
6. Click ‘Change’ and point to c:\wmp_AboveNormal.bat . Click OK and Close.
Now everytime you dubbleclick an .avi WMP will open with the ‘AboveNormal’ -priority setting ! (Repeat steps 4-6 to register all mediatypes you want to be opened this way.)
These are all the settings: Realtime, High, AboveNormal, Normal, BelowNormal, Low.
*Realtime is not recommended unless you have a dual-CPU systems..;)
Protecting XP from intruders
There are several things one can do to protect against intruders. Of course the old adage applies here as well, ‘locks keep honest people out’; in other words, if they want in, they will keep trying and eventually will be able to get in through some kind of exploit. The following are some tips that can greatly slow them down and make it nearly impossible for them to get in. If you use file sharing or remote connections, don’t make the local policy changes.
1. As it was mentioned before, set the Guest and Administrator account passwords. By default, the Guest account password is blank. Make it something difficult, such as a combination of letters and numbers, preferably not based on dictionary words. Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Local Users and Groups\ Highlight User Account, right-click, ’set password’.
2. Remove/Delete any unused accounts, especially any ‘remote assistance’ accounts.
3. Disable the Guest account since you can’t delete it.
4. Rename the Guest and Administrator accounts to unique names. Remove the description of these accounts (in local users and groups). Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Local Security Policy\Local Policies\Security Options Account: Rename Guest Account - Double click and rename the account Account: Rename Administrator Account
5. If you do not need to connect to your computer from a remote machine, be sure to turn off this functionality. Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Local Security Policy\Local Policies\User rights Assessment\ “Access this computer from the network” - remove all users and groups. This should be blank “Deny access to this computer from the network” - this should include all users and groups. Double click on the policy, click Add User or group, click Advanced, click Find Now, highlight all the accounts and click OK.
6. Turn off the Microsoft File sharing in Network Neighborhood if it is not going to be used.
7. Under System Properties\Remote, Turn off Remote Desktop and Remote invitations.
8. Run a software firewall program.
9. Be sure to visit WindowsUpdate to get the latest hotfixes and security patches. There are a lot of them.
===============
Performance Increase Through ‘My Computer’
Easy enough tweak to usually find out about it on your own, but still, some of us still don’t find it right away. So here it is:
Start > right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click on the “Advanced” tab.
See the “Performance” section? Click “Settings”.
Disable the following:
Fade or slide menus into view
Fade or slide ToolTips into view
Fade out menu items after clicking
Show Shadows under menus
Slide open combo boxes
Slide taskbar buttons
Use a background image for each folder type
Use common tasks in folders
There, now Windows will still look nice and perform a lot faster
Changing Window Xp Boot Screen
http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/
, a free program that works with Windows 2000/XP. Plus, you don’t have to mess with the Windows kernel, which can really suck because you would have to reinstall windows. I recommend using StarDock’s bootskin software because it is easy but if you want to mess around with the registry and do it the hard way then use the method below
So here is how to hack your WinXP boot screen by modifying the Windows kernel in Resource Hacker. Modifying the kernel is really risky because if you mess it up you would have to reinstall windows now you would need these tools.
http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker/ <==== Resource Hacker
, Any image editor (Paint)
1. Locate ntoskrnl.exe in your \Windows\System32 folder. You might have to unhide the folder.
2. Make a copy of your ntoskrnl.exe and rename it ntoskrnl.bak for backup safety.
3. Launch Resource Hacker and open ntoskrnl.exe.
4. In the left hand you will see a list of resources to edit. Open the first tree called Bitmaps and you’ll see numbers 1 through 12. The Windows XP Pro bitmaps are numbers 1, 8, and 10. Windows XP Home bitmaps are numbered 1, 7, and 9. The bitmaps are slightly different shapes and sizes based on the graphics and text for each. In this tutorial we’ll work with Windows XP Pro. If you use Home, substitute the numbers for your OS.
5. Select No. 1. The bitmap will appear completely black, but it really isn’t. For some reason Microsoft removed the color palette from the logo to another location in Windows XP. We’ll fix it later in our image editor.
6. Go to the Action Menu and choose “Save Bitmap.” You can save the bitmap wherever you want, but remember where you put them for later. Repeat this process for numbers 8 and 10.
7. Open your image editor (my steps are for Paint Shop Pro 8, but those who love Photoshop can go that route). Open all three of your saved bitmap images. When opened, they should appear totally black.
8. We’ll have to import the palette to see the actual images. Save the following file to Program Files\Jasc\Paintshoppro\Palettes.
9. In Paint Shop Pro, make sure the bitmap 1 window is active and press Shift + O to import your palette. If you have multiple palettes available, select your new one to import the colors used in the original boot screen.
Important: Make sure to select Maintain Indexes in the bottom options before importing. If you’ve already got all three images open at once in your canvas, you will need to apply the palette to bitmaps 8 and 10 as well with the steps above to make the images visible.
10. Modify the bitmaps however you like and save them over the existing bitmaps 1,8, and 10. They will make up your new boot screen.
11. Open Resource Hacker again, and reopen the ntoskrnl.exe. Under the Action menu, choose “Replace Bitmap.” Select Bitmap to Replace for bitmap 1, then click “Open file with new Bitmap” and find your edited image. Click replace. Follow the same steps with bitmap 8 and 10.
12. Once you replace all 3 bitmaps, choose Save As and save your new ntoskrnl.exe to a directory other then the system32 directory. You don’t want to overwrite the original while it’s in use. Saving it to your desktop is fine.
13. You have the option to test out your new boot screen before totally overwriting the original. First, name your new ntoskrnl.exe something different (like ntcaesar.exe). In boot.ini, locate this string:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Micro soft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect
Add a line just above it with this string:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”My new boot screen” /fastdetect\kernel=ntcaesar.exe (or whatever you named your new ntoskrnl.exe)
Now, move your new and renamed ntoskrnl.exe back into your system32 folder. This will allow you to choose which kernel you boot into before Windows starts.
Now go ahead and restart. When you get to the prompt, choose “My new boot screen” and see if you like it. If you’re happy, go back into boot.ini and delete the string you added.
14. You don’t want to keep multiple booting options in your boot.ini. When Windows has critical updates or other updates it needs to install on your system, it only updates what it considers the original kernel, the ntoskrl.exe. Basically, you want to overwrite the original ntoskrnl.exe file so you only have one copy in the System32 folder. Remember, you did make a backup of the true original before at the very start of this exercise, so you can always revert back if you absolutely have to.
In order to overwrite properly, Windows File Protection makes you reboot into safe mode (reboot and hit F8 before the boot screen appears). You could also boot off a DOS bootdisk to overwrite the original ntoskrnl.exe in the System32 folder. Once you overwrite the file, reboot. Your new screen should appear!
First extract the IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe file . Then go to the folder you just extracted and delete the file SHLWAPI.DLL. Then open notepad and just save a blank file in notepad as IEXPLORE.exe.local . Then you will be able to run the iexplore.exe.
guys question.. how do i setup my windows xp na limited access lang yung sa guest account. restrictions are, he can’t access the control panel, when connected in the internet may certain sites na naka block like for example, balak ko black yung yahoo, google, etc. para maka pag trabaho sya .. mga tao ko keeps on chattin. hehe! thanks. no control panel, program files, drive c: limited access lang sya dapat. thanks!
~~~

try run gpedit.msc ( group policy) to control user settings..
===============

Removing the MSN Messenger

If you want to remove the MSN Messenger from always starting in the system tray, do
Start / Run

Then enter in the following string: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

To remove it completely, see the section Adding / Removing Additional Programs

Remove the hide from the line:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

~~~
ang galing! thank you dude!
===============
HOW ABOUT….. RESTRICTING OTHER USER FROM THE WINDOWS ON INSTALLING PROGRAMS….. :unsure: :unsure: :unsure:
~~~

There is no fool proof way to prevent a user from installing programs however these steps will provide enough restriction:

1. Create admin user as Administrator type. Install all programs using this account.

2. Create user accounts for other users as General User type. Allow general users to use only this type of account.

3. Lock down or disable local floppy and CD-ROM drives. Allow only remote access drives.

4. Install firewall or proxy server which restricts download of .EXE, .COM, or any executables from other sources such as the Internet

5. Restrict write access to Program Files and Windows system directories to admin user type

Or, another way of dealing with it is to utilize a rollback process using native Windows backup/restore capability after each session in order to reinitialize system back to baseline install setup. For more advanced users, VMWare can be used in conjunction with Windows.

Actually, the best setup is to use all that I suggested above.

~~~
It actually works thanks keep it up hope to hear new tips and tricks :thumbsupsmiley:
e pano alising yung auto chkdsk na 1 to 5?
~~~

Type at the command prompt:

chkntfs /t:0

To check it it worked, type:

chkntfs /t

You should see a value of 0. :headsetsmiley:

ok back to tips..that is web surfing tips..

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth !

Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes

(suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth !

Here’s how to get it back:

Click Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc” without the ”

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy–>Computer Configuration–>Administrative Templates–>Network–>QOS Packet Scheduler–>Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab :

“By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
Works on XP Pro and 2000.

Other OS not tested.

~~~
This option is only available on Win2k/XP systems so no use testing on other OS. :P
~~~
Will you look at that… tsk tsk tsk ang daya nila ah! :grr:

Astig! :cool: I’ll be chekin’ this out bro. Definitely a 20% increase in available bandwidth is one heck of a figure. I’m sure there will be a noticeable increase in performance. :thumbsupsmiley:

Hello Geniuses,

I need advise on “Skins”…

what are they? hehehe…

I downloaded some themes, skins, etc. from the internet, unpacked them, but don’t know how to load them on my computer?

can you guys help a simpleton like me?

thanks!

~~~
well dude that depends on what skins u’ve downloaded.. if ur pertaining for the WinXP skins..
there are two ways you can make use of the file u’ve downloaded.
– the first one is to extract the files in your Windows\Resources\Themes folder, be sure that the one’s you’ll extract is a folder containg a shell subfolder and a file of an msstyle (*.msstyle) type.
(e.g. aero folder must contain a shell folder and aero.msstyle file) to use ur extracted theme, go to Start->Control Panel->Display Properties and at the appearance tab choose the color scheme that you want (like our example Aero). click Apply to checkout the skin you;ve just installed.
– another way to do this (and i guess the simpler way) is to download StyleXP.. you can check out the program at the free stuff section -> http://manilatonight.com/index.php?showtop…140&p=3151672&#
hope this helps
~~~

The first step will not work, you need to install the stylexp 1st before doing it. It needs to patch the uxtheme.dll, the stylexp will do it for you.

Rip high-quality MP3s in Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP)

The relationship between Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP) and the MP3 audio format is widely misunderstood. Basically, MPXP is able to playback MP3 files out of the box, but encoding (or “ripping”) CD audio into MP3 format will require an MP3 plug-in. During the Windows XP beta, Microsoft supplied a sample MP3 plug-in for testing purposes, but it was limited to 56 Kbps rips, which is pretty useless, leading some to report that Microsoft was purposefully hobbling MP3 to make its Windows Media Audio (WMA) format look better. This is not the case.

To enable MP3 encoding in Windows XP, you’ll need to to purchase one of three MP3 Creation Add-on packs for Windows XP. For more information, please visit the Microsoft Web site.

* Click the Tools menu

* Select Internet Options

* Click the Delete Files button on the General tab

* Check Delete all offline content then click OK this will delete files used for offline content - if you have been doing that; if not, it doesn’t matter

After the files temp files are deleted, and it can take quite a while, defrag your HD. This tip is for all versions of Windows.

PrintScreen

Pressing the PrtScn key copies the entire display to the clipboard. Pressing ALT +PrtScn copies only the active Window to the clipboard.

Birthdays are always special — its the day you were born. But you know what? With Goldilocks, you can make that special day EXTRA SPECIAL!

Let’s define EXTRA special, shall we?

Well, I dunno exactly how to say it but just imagine a dinner date at the rooftop — with all the flowers, chocolates, champaigne and all. That’s special. Now how about, extra special? Well, it’s like a dinner date with the chocolates, flowers, champaigne but this time, with a background music a (pianist maybe, or a violinist if you want–use your imagination) and with fireworks. Now that’s what you call extra special!

I grew up with Goldilocks- well, not exactly, but you know what I mean, no? On my first birthday, my parents bought a Goldilocks cake to make my day extra special. How do I know? I got a picture of it but I can’t post it here because I cant find it. I misplaced it. Dang it. Every year, I celebrate my birthday– ofcourse. And there’s only one of brand of cake we always buy. Goldilocks! Actually, its like a family tradition. Whenever we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or we just want to make an ordinary day special, we would go to the nearest Goldilocks store, buy a cake and pig out.

The funny thing is, when we want to eat a cake or ask somebody to buy us a cake, we dont say “I want cake” or “Please buy me a cake”. We say, “I want Goldilocks!“. If I have my own dictionary, you’ll find Goldilocks there.

So how does Goldilocks make it extra special?
The taste. The design. The quality. Its ohhhhh-so-gooood! Man. It’s off the hook! Youll never get sick of the taste. It’ll leave you wanting more– in a good way, okay? Actually, I think I need not explain. You can tell by the look on my sister’s face. This was her 5th birthday.

Ohh. How cute. You see how Goldilocks, made her smile?– made her happy?

And you know what? Just by giving someone a Goldilocks cake or any products from Goldilocks– there’s plenty and they’re sooo good. The sugar free brownies (for clarification, when you say sugar free, it doesn’t mean you’ll get a free pack of sugar, no.. it means it has no sugar. lol ), cake slices and more– you can show them you love and value them. You can make them feel how special they are. You need not say “I LOVE YOU”. That Goldilocks cake speaks for you.

So yeah. You’re the one Goldilocks, because you make our ordinary days, special and make our special days EXTRA special.

To change to your flash directory type you drive location and semi column (e.g. G:) and press enter. Then type dir/w/a then hit enter

The files on your flash drive will appear. If there’s a virus or any suspicious file, you should remove it.

“How?”, you ask.

Type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* then hit enter. This will remove the attributes of the files so read-only, archives, system and hidden files can be deleted.

Now, type the filename or folder that you want to delete.

For example, autorun.inf (Autorun.inf is a virus).

Type del autorun.inf then hit enter.

Now, check the flash drive again, type dir/w/a or just hit the up arrow key. It should be gone.

20 Great Google Secrets

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1306756,00.asp

Google is clearly the best general-purpose search engine on the Web (see

www.pcmag.com/searchengines

But most people don’t use it to its best advantage. Do you just plug in a keyword or two and hope for the best? That may be the quickest way to search, but with more than 3 billion pages in Google’s index, it’s still a struggle to pare results to a manageable number.

But Google is an remarkably powerful tool that can ease and enhance your Internet exploration. Google’s search options go beyond simple keywords, the Web, and even its own programmers. Let’s look at some of Google’s lesser-known options.

Syntax Search Tricks

Using a special syntax is a way to tell Google that you want to restrict your searches to certain elements or characteristics of Web pages. Google has a fairly complete list of its syntax elements at

www.google.com/help/operators.html

. Here are some advanced operators that can help narrow down your search results.

Intitle: at the beginning of a query word or phrase (intitle:”Three Blind Mice”) restricts your search results to just the titles of Web pages.

Intext: does the opposite of intitle:, searching only the body text, ignoring titles, links, and so forth. Intext: is perfect when what you’re searching for might commonly appear in URLs. If you’re looking for the term HTML, for example, and you don’t want to get results such as

www.mysite.com/index.html

, you can enter intext:html.

Link: lets you see which pages are linking to your Web page or to another page you’re interested in. For example, try typing in

link:http://www.pcmag.com

Try using site: (which restricts results to top-level domains) with intitle: to find certain types of pages. For example, get scholarly pages about Mark Twain by searching for intitle:”Mark Twain”site:edu. Experiment with mixing various elements; you’ll develop several strategies for finding the stuff you want more effectively. The site: command is very helpful as an alternative to the mediocre search engines built into many sites.

Swiss Army Google

Google has a number of services that can help you accomplish tasks you may never have thought to use Google for. For example, the new calculator feature

(www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator)

lets you do both math and a variety of conversions from the search box. For extra fun, try the query “Answer to life the universe and everything.”

Let Google help you figure out whether you’ve got the right spelling-and the right word-for your search. Enter a misspelled word or phrase into the query box (try “thre blund mise”) and Google may suggest a proper spelling. This doesn’t always succeed; it works best when the word you’re searching for can be found in a dictionary. Once you search for a properly spelled word, look at the results page, which repeats your query. (If you’re searching for “three blind mice,” underneath the search window will appear a statement such as Searched the web for “three blind mice.”) You’ll discover that you can click on each word in your search phrase and get a definition from a dictionary.

Suppose you want to contact someone and don’t have his phone number handy. Google can help you with that, too. Just enter a name, city, and state. (The city is optional, but you must enter a state.) If a phone number matches the listing, you’ll see it at the top of the search results along with a map link to the address. If you’d rather restrict your results, use rphonebook: for residential listings or bphonebook: for business listings. If you’d rather use a search form for business phone listings, try Yellow Search

(www.buzztoolbox.com/google/yellowsearch.shtml).

Extended Googling

Google offers several services that give you a head start in focusing your search. Google Groups

(http://groups.google.com)

indexes literally millions of messages from decades of discussion on Usenet. Google even helps you with your shopping via two tools: Froogle CODE (http://froogle.google.com),

which indexes products from online stores, and Google Catalogs CODE (http://catalogs.google.com),

which features products from more 6,000 paper catalogs in a searchable index. And this only scratches the surface. You can get a complete list of Google’s tools and services at

www.google.com/options/index.html

You’re probably used to using Google in your browser. But have you ever thought of using Google outside your browser?

Google Alert

(www.googlealert.com)

monitors your search terms and e-mails you information about new additions to Google’s Web index. (Google Alert is not affiliated with Google; it uses Google’s Web services API to perform its searches.) If you’re more interested in news stories than general Web content, check out the beta version of Google News Alerts

(www.google.com/newsalerts).

This service (which is affiliated with Google) will monitor up to 50 news queries per e-mail address and send you information about news stories that match your query. (Hint: Use the intitle: and source: syntax elements with Google News to limit the number of alerts you get.)

Google on the telephone? Yup. This service is brought to you by the folks at Google Labs

(http://labs.google.com),

a place for experimental Google ideas and features (which may come and go, so what’s there at this writing might not be there when you decide to check it out). With Google Voice Search

(http://labs1.google.com/gvs.html),

you dial the Voice Search phone number, speak your keywords, and then click on the indicated link. Every time you say a new search term, the results page will refresh with your new query (you must have JavaScript enabled for this to work). Remember, this service is still in an experimental phase, so don’t expect 100 percent success.

In 2002, Google released the Google API (application programming interface), a way for programmers to access Google’s search engine results without violating the Google Terms of Service. A lot of people have created useful (and occasionally not-so-useful but interesting) applications not available from Google itself, such as Google Alert. For many applications, you’ll need an API key, which is available free from CODE www.google.com/apis

. See the figures for two more examples, and visit

www.pcmag.com/solutions

for more.

Thanks to its many different search properties, Google goes far beyond a regular search engine. Give the tricks in this article a try. You’ll be amazed at how many different ways Google can improve your Internet searching.

Online Extra: More Google Tips

Here are a few more clever ways to tweak your Google searches.

Search Within a Timeframe

Daterange: (start date-end date). You can restrict your searches to pages that were indexed within a certain time period. Daterange: searches by when Google indexed a page, not when the page itself was created. This operator can help you ensure that results will have fresh content (by using recent dates), or you can use it to avoid a topic’s current-news blizzard and concentrate only on older results. Daterange: is actually more useful if you go elsewhere to take advantage of it, because daterange: requires Julian dates, not standard Gregorian dates. You can find converters on the Web (such as

CODE http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/JulianDate.html

excl.gif No Active Links, Read the Rules - Edit by Ninja excl.gif

), but an easier way is to do a Google daterange: search by filling in a form at

www.researchbuzz.com/toolbox/goofresh.shtml or www.faganfinder.com/engines/google.shtml

. If one special syntax element is good, two must be better, right? Sometimes. Though some operators can’t be mixed (you can’t use the link: operator with anything else) many can be, quickly narrowing your results to a less overwhelming number.

More Google API Applications

Staggernation.com offers three tools based on the Google API. The Google API Web Search by Host (GAWSH) lists the Web hosts of the results for a given query

(www.staggernation.com/gawsh/).

When you click on the triangle next to each host, you get a list of results for that host. The Google API Relation Browsing Outliner (GARBO) is a little more complicated: You enter a URL and choose whether you want pages that related to the URL or linked to the URL

(www.staggernation.com/garbo/).

Click on the triangle next to an URL to get a list of pages linked or related to that particular URL. CapeMail is an e-mail search application that allows you to send an e-mail to google@capeclear.com with the text of your query in the subject line and get the first ten results for that query back. Maybe it’s not something you’d do every day, but if your cell phone does e-mail and doesn’t do Web browsing, this is a very handy address to know.

Uhh., insurance, what?

Well, according to wikipedia:

Insurance, in law and economics, is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of a contingent loss. Insurance is defined as the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another, in exchange for a premium, and can be thought of as a guaranteed small loss to prevent a large, possibly devastating loss.

Insurer- the company selling the insurance

Policyholder- this is you, the person buying the insurance.

If you dont want to pay for damages straight from your pocket, and stuff- if you want PROTECTION, then I guess you should consider buying an insurance.

Now, the problem is there’s a lot of company out there that offers car insurance, how will you know what to choose?

Easy, you just have to check the list of recommended auto insurance.

And because it’s “recommended“, you’ll never go wrong. So yeah. (:

Im actually planning to buy a new mobile phone but I dont know which phone brand to buy. Does brand matter? Ofcourse, dear.

I’ve been using nokia mobile phones and it’s really good. The style, the features- its awesome.

But some of my friends are samsung mobile phones addict. They said it’s really good. I borrowed my friends phone once and tried it and it’s surprisingly great. The style’s off the hook and the features- oh man, the features- it’s beyond what I’ve imagined. Now I know why my friends loved it.

Now, what should I buy? Nokia phone or Samsung?

Oh dear. Its almost the same and I’m really confused. Should I try something new? Maybe I should. Since my friends love samsung, maybe i should try it, too. I should try it, right? lol. Well, there’s no harm in trying and I think my friends wouldn’t use it if it’s not good. So yeah!

Now, all I have to do is to find the best mobile phone deals and buy a new phone.
