Interestingly, several years ago, wearing matching denim on the top and bottom was considered a fashion faux pas. Wearing mismatched denim washes and colours was thought to be the more stylish and sophisticated way to sport double denim. Oh, how things change. These days, matching your denim is precisely the point, and on point. It highlights how arbitrary fashion guidelines can be, and how dramatically they can reverse over time.

Denim tops can be jackets, shirts, vests, or blouses in a range of styles. Bottoms can be jeans, skirts, or shorts in any silhouette, fit, and length. Think wide-leg, straight, slouchy, barrel, bootcut, flared, kick flare, cropped, or slim jeans. Skirts can be mini, knee-length, midi, midaxi, or maxi across pencil and flared silhouettes. Shorts can range from very short to knee length across all sorts of fits. The collection shows a wide range of examples.

Most denim sets are some shade of blue, ranging from very dark indigo to faded mid blue and extremely light washes. That said, denim sets can be any neutral or non-neutral colour. Think black, white, cream, grey, brown, olive, red, pink, burgundy, or green. Sometimes the denim is patterned, colourblocked, patchworked, embroidered, studded, beaded, or otherwise embellished.

The matching denim top and bottom can be worn together without interruption to create a strong column of denim. Or you can break up the denim with a third piece. For example, wear a tee, shirt, blouse, knitted top, or sweater underneath an open denim jacket, shirt, or vest. Alternatively, create a column of matching denim with the top and bottom, and layer another topper over the lot. Scarves, belts, bags, shoes, and eyewear can also effectively break up the expanse of denim.

You can buy denim pieces that were intentionally designed and sold as a matching set, which makes getting the match exactly right very easy. Or create your own set by combining denim items from your wardrobe that weren’t designed to match, but are close enough in wash, fabric and colour to pass as a set. The match doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect if the overall effect looks deliberate.

Although they aren’t two-piece sets, denim jumpsuits and longer denim dresses create a similarly large expanse of the same denim, so wearing one isn’t all that different from wearing a denim set. You can break up the expanse with some of the styling tricks mentioned above, or leave the denim uninterrupted. You might prefer one approach over the other. Either can work well.

Personally, I LOVE denim and matching sets, so it makes sense that I love denim sets. I like the visual impact of matching denim, the ease of having a ready-made combination, and the versatility of wearing the pieces separately too. A matching denim set is quite daring, fashion-forward, and a fun way to wear double denim. It also feels fresh after years of being encouraged to mismatch our denim washes.

Of course, I like some sets more than others. I prefer denim sets in the form of a jacket with jeans or a skirt. At the moment, I can create exact denim sets from my wardrobe in pastel pink, white, and very dark indigo blue. I thoroughly enjoy wearing them. I’ll happily snap up an intentionally designed matching denim set if the right one finds me.

Triangle scarves come in solids, textured solids, and patterns like stripes, checks, argyles, and Fair Isle. Some are fine-gauge and refined, while others are chunky and fuzzy. Sizes vary too. Smaller versions provide neck coverage and function a little like a woolly bandana or neckerchief. Larger versions cover more of the chest and shoulders, and can function much like a small wrap or shawl. Either way, the triangular shape makes an impact.

In my opinion, the BEST thing about a triangle scarf is how easy it is to tie. No complicated knots, elaborate folding, or endless lengths of fabric to manage. The triangular point does much of the styling work for you. Drape the point in the back or to the side, and tie the ends into a single or square knot. Some versions have a hole you can loop one end through, making things even easier. Or spread a larger triangle across the shoulders and let the ends hang, or tie them loosely. Uncomplicated and visually effective.

Triangle scarves are versatile layering pieces, and can be effective colour vehicles. Wear one inside a coat or jacket, where a smaller version adds warmth without creating too much bulk. Or wear one over a coat, jacket, or blazer so that it becomes a more prominent part of the outfit. Larger versions can be draped over outerwear almost like a wrap.

Triangle scarves can also be part of a matching set. A scarf that exactly matches a sweater creates a punchy and playful twinset effect. Visually, it extends the sweater up and around the neckline, which is interesting and versatile because you can choose whether you want the extra neck coverage. Alternatively, mismatch the scarf completely, or remix it with other items in your wardrobe. Use it to add a complementary colour, introduce a pattern, repeat a colour elsewhere in the outfit, enhance a tonal palette, or create a high-contrast accent.

Another advantage is that triangle scarves don’t necessarily look like outerwear accessories. Smaller and more refined versions can look at home worn indoors as part of an outfit. Instead of automatically removing your scarf with your coat, leave it on as an accessory. They’re practical too. Compared with a large rectangular scarf, smaller triangle scarves are less bulky, easier to tuck into outerwear, and easier to stash in a handbag or tote when you take them off. Yet they can provide surprisingly effective coverage around the neck and upper chest.

Of course, triangle scarves aren’t new. Versions have been around for decades, and shawls and neckerchiefs have an even longer history. What feels fresh is seeing the triangular shape interpreted as a cozy cold-weather accessory, and offered in so many colours, textures, patterns, proportions, and matching sets.

If you enjoy scarves but find traditional scarf tying a bit of a production, this might be your scarf. Simply drape, tie, and go. Easy, cozy, practical, and on trend.

Personally, I like the look and am all in. I wear scarves for warmth and insulation rather than purely decorative purposes, so this trend hits the spot. I got a large chunky triangle scarf with a matching beanie last year when the look was fringe trending. I also got a pullover to match. The items are shown in FINDS below. I can attest to how easy the scarf is to tie, and how well it stays put with a loose single knot. It’s effective worn over coats and jackets too, which is not something I usually do since I generally wear scarves inside my outerwear. I’d like to get a small, fine-gauge triangle scarf with a matching pullover in an argyle or stripe if I find just the right one.

Why an extension?

Many retailers now block bookmarklets for perfectly good security reasons. This is why the bookmarklet doesn’t work at stores like Aritzia, Farfetch, Kate Spade, Lululemon and Talbots. A browser extension, on the other hand, is a proper part of the browser and can read the page at every store.

Making the collector a browser extension also allowed us to make other improvements:

• Better pictures. Some stores hide their product images from the YLF server. The extension can fetch the picture straight from your browser, and if the picture it picks isn’t the one you want, you can choose another from every large image on the page.
• More stores. Beyond the more than 120 stores we support by hand, the extension can now read the standard product information that most modern retailer sites publish. That means we can often switch on a new store for you without writing any code for it.
• It tells us when something goes wrong. If a collection fails, you can report it with one click, and we get the details we need to fix it.

I have been collecting with it since August, so it has had a thorough workout. You can get it up and running with a simple three step process.

1. Install the extension

You need Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop computer (Mac, Windows or Chromebook). The extension isn’t listed publicly in the Chrome Web Store, so the link below is the only way to find it.

Open YLF Collector on the Chrome Web Store in Chrome and click Add to Chrome. Chrome will ask you to confirm. The permission it lists covers youlookfab.com and one image server; the extension can’t see any other site until you click its button while you are on that site.

2. Pin the extension

Pin it to your toolbar: click the puzzle-piece icon at the top right of Chrome, find YLF Collector, and click the pin next to it. You’ll now see the little YLF icon next to the address bar.

3. Connect the extension to YLF

Make sure you are logged in to YLF in a normal tab, then click the YLF icon and press Connect to YouLookFab. You only do this once. (If you weren’t logged in, it will send you to the login page; log in, then click Connect again.)

To check that everything is working, click the icon while you are on any YLF page. You should see the message “Your finds collector extension is correctly installed.”

Collecting an item

1. Go to the page of an item you want at any supported store. If the item comes in several colours, select the one you want on the store’s page first.
2. Click the YLF icon. The popup shows the store, the brand, the title and the picture the collector found.
3. Tidy it up if you like: edit the title, choose the department, add a note. If the picture isn’t right, click Choose a different picture and pick one from the page.
4. Click Collect This Item. That’s it. The item is in your Finds the next time you look, ready to attach to a forum post.

A few other things worth knowing:

• To collect a second colour, switch the colour on the store’s page and click Collect again; it becomes a separate item in your Finds. If the popup still shows the first colour, reload the store’s page after switching and try once more.
• If you have already collected an item, the popup says so and the button becomes Save Changes, so you can update the title, department or notes without creating a duplicate.
• Clicking the icon on a page that isn’t a product (a category page, say) just tells you so. Nothing is ever collected until you press the button.

When a store isn’t supported

The list of supported stores is on the Finds help page. If you click the collector at a store that isn’t on it, it will tell you so and offer a Request this store button. Please use it, and add a note if you like. Requests come straight to us, and since many stores can now be switched on without new code, yours may be added quickly.

If a supported store fails (the collector can’t find the product, or the picture won’t load), you’ll see a Report this to YLF button. That sends us the store, the page address and the technical reason, which is usually all we need to fix it. There is also a “report a problem” link at the bottom of the popup for anything else.

Your privacy

The extension does nothing until you click its button. It doesn’t watch what you browse, and it talks only to youlookfab.com. When you collect an item, the product details you see in the popup are sent to YLF and stored in your Finds. When a collection fails, it sends us a small diagnostic report: the store, the page address, the extension version and the reason. That’s all. The details are in our privacy policy.

A few questions you might have

Does it work on my phone or iPad? No. Chrome on phones and tablets can’t run extensions, so for now this is a computer thing, just as the bookmarklet was.

What about Safari, Firefox or Edge? We support Chrome only. Edge and other Chrome-based browsers can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store and may well work, but we haven’t tested them.

Do I need to update it? No. Chrome updates extensions automatically, so new stores and fixes arrive on their own.

Do I need to reconnect? Only if you see “Your connection to YLF has expired.” Click Connect to YouLookFab again and you’re set.

What about the old bookmarklet? It keeps working at the stores that allow it, and you don’t have to do anything to it. But it isn’t going to get any better, and the list of stores that block it will only grow, so if you use Chrome I’d recommend switching now. Once the extension is set up you can delete the YLF Collect bookmark.

This year I’m especially struck by the huge variation in skirt styling. There is no dominant skirt silhouette, length, proportion, or styling direction. Pleated, pencil, A-line, flared, tiered, asymmetric, lantern, bias-cut, denim, leather, suede, satin, corduroy, lace, patterned, and plaid skirts are all represented.

Remarkably, the variety of support acts is just as broad. Skirts are being remixed with everything from tees, button-down shirts, sweatshirts, quarter-zips, blouses, rugby tops, polo tops, and knitwear across ALL lengths and fits. Think body-con, tailored, fluid, boxy, or oversized, and cropped through to tunic length. Blazers, bombers, denim jackets, leather jackets, puffers, vests, waistcoats, and coats provide third pieces across every fit and length variation too.

Footwear runs the gamut from mules, loafers, glove flats, pumps, slingbacks, refined dressy booties, and tall boots, to casual riding boots, Western boots, moto boots, and stompy boots. The result is an interesting assortment of proportions, tensions, and vibes. Some outfits are casual and others dressier, but even the dressier combinations tend to have a small relaxed element that makes them feel current.

The collections here are large because I wanted to show the many ways to create a transitional skirt outfit. Feast your eyes on the visual inspiration, and hopefully something sparks an idea using items that are already hanging in your wardrobe. I’m inspired and ready to wear my tall boots and dressy booties with skirts in colder weather. Some of these looks might suit your Winter weather too.

1. More Casual

The casual combinations are wonderfully varied. Think denim, corduroy, cotton, wool, leather, suede, satin, and patterned skirts worn with relaxed knitwear, tees, shirts, sweatshirts, polo tops, and casual jackets that run from trendy to classic. Chunky or flat footwear, boots, sneakers, loafers, and casual bags further relax the look. Some combinations are quite rugged, while others are eclectic, English countryside, ’90s and Y2K, sporty, preppy, bohemian, classic, goth, Western, hard-edged, or avant-garde. The juxtaposition of a dressier skirt with a casual support act is particularly effective.

2. More Dressy

The dressier outfits are more refined and smarter without looking overly formal or too form-fitting. Silky and swishy skirts, refined pleats, lace, leather, interesting textures, and dramatic shapes are combined with sleek, fluid, or boxy knitwear, crisp shirts, pretty blouses, jackets, elegant coats, and dressier footwear. Some tops are tucked or semi-tucked, while others are worn over the skirts. What makes these combinations feel particularly NOW is the relaxed element that runs through many of them. A roomy sweater, fluid top, bomber, flat shoe, tall boot, or casually styled layer takes the edge off the dressiness. That little bit of ease and juxtaposition is key. The result is sophisticated and pulled together, and comfortable enough to wear day to day.

Some outfits straddle the line between casual and dressy, which is part of the appeal. Your own definitions of the appropriate dress codes for work and play are what matter most. Perhaps Team Skirt has gained a few new members.

It’s also where you’ll see some of the newest and most daring trends in action. Hip combinations, fashion-forward outfits, creative styling, modern classic perfection, and all sorts of other chic and fab are part of the everyday landscape across all ages and genders. New Yorkers are also famously fond of wearing black, including black from head to toe.

On this trip I stayed in Manhattan and didn’t venture into the other boroughs, so my observations are specific to the areas I walked through. The style quotient remains high, but one thing struck me right away: NYC street style is remarkably more casual than I remember it.

The casualization of our wardrobes is a worldwide phenomenon, and even NYC has not escaped it. I suspect the pandemic accelerated the shift. I also saw less black than I usually associate with New York street style. Outfits were generally neutral, but not as relentlessly black.

Sneakers Rule

By far, the number one shoe on the streets of Manhattan was some type of sneaker. Chunky, sleek, athletic, hybrid, retro, sneakerina — you name it, and I saw it. People wore sneakers with EVERYTHING. The next most popular shoes were flats, particularly ballet flats and loafers. It was a little too hot for boots at that time of year, although I saw some of those too.

What surprised me was what I didn’t see. Despite some very hot and sticky days, sandals, mules, clogs, Crocs, and socks with Birkenstocks were not popular in the areas I frequented. I hardly saw them. Given the extensive walking you do in NYC on any given day, the popularity of sneakers and other closed shoes like flats makes sense. You need comfortable shoes that cover your feet and can go the distance when you’re pounding those pavements for hours. Personally, I walk a lot in Seattle, and feel similarly about foot coverage and protection.

Athleisure, Jeans, and Relaxed Fits

I saw more athleisure than I remember, along with elevated athleisure. Another strong nod to casualization. Jeans were extremely popular, as were dressy dark trousers styled in casual ways. I saw fewer people in skirts and dresses, although they were certainly represented. There were more skirts than dresses, which makes sense since trend-wise it’s a skirt season.

Fits were seldom tight unless tops were deliberately body-con. There were lots of fluid and oversized silhouettes, relaxed proportions, some architectural looks, some tailored looks, and clothing that moves when you do. Bottoms were generally big. The overall effect was comfortable and relaxed, some polished, some RATE (rough around the edges), some wacky, some elegant, some avant-garde and lots of super cool.

Interestingly, and unlike what I regularly see on the streets of Seattle, I didn’t notice any hard-edged grungy gothic rocker looks with lots of tattoos, body piercings, and rainbow hair. At least, not in the parts of Manhattan I walked through on this particular trip. I see that more on the West Coast of the US, like in San Francisco and parts of Los Angeles.

Of course, that’s part of the fun of watching street style in NYC. Keep looking and eventually you’ll see just about everything. No matter what your style is, you’ll find your tribe in NYC. There is enormous variety, plenty of individuality, and always something interesting to catch your eye. Never a dull moment in the city that never sleeps.

This was the first time I’ve devoted such a concentrated amount of time to shopping in NYC. It was well worth it, and quite the eye-opener. If there’s an American, European, British, Canadian, Australian, or Asian fashion brand you’re curious about, chances are high that there’s a brick-and-mortar store in NYC. It’s a shopping paradise, albeit crowded and overwhelming.

All the stores I visited had their good points, although some stood out more than others.

Shout-Outs to These Stores

The iconic Ralph Lauren flagship on the Upper East Side is four stories high, and THE most beautiful store I’ve seen in my life. The shopping experience is exquisite, completely on-brand, and stands the test of time. It covers many of the varied Ralph Lauren collections, as well as homeware and accessories. The Polo Ralph Lauren floor was my happy horsey place. The flagship has a fancy café, and dogs are welcome throughout the store. The staff was extremely diverse and inclusive in every way, and immaculately kitted out in Ralph Lauren. Service was welcoming, professional, and helpful.

Nordstrom is quite new and spectacular. An assortment of price points, sizes, and lifestyles are represented, and the staff was friendly and helpful. My heart is with the Nordstrom flagship at home in Seattle because it’s store #1, although the NYC store is a close second.

Bloomingdale’s flagship has particularly good menswear and footwear departments. I much enjoy their assortment of price points, and their house brand Aqua is affordable and always worth a look.

Japanese Uniqlo, Spanish MANGO, and Swedish H&M are more budget-friendly options that impressed me. Their SoHo stores are enormous and several stories high. I have a retail buying and manufacturing background, and here’s my two cents. It’s generally easier to manufacture an expensive, high-quality item in small quantities and sell it at a higher price. It’s much harder to manufacture mainstream items in enormous quantities, sell them at lower prices, and maintain good to excellent quality. The quality at Uniqlo and MANGO is particularly good, and H&M has greatly upped its game.

Swedish COS, French Sézane, and British TOAST are exceptionally fab, and competitively priced considering their gorgeous fabrics, pristine workmanship, and interesting design details. They’re much less expensive than designer items, can look every bit as good, and are sometimes superior in quality.

Dutch G-Star and Belgian Essentiel Antwerp are close to my heart, and in my opinion, amongst the coolest brands on the planet. Their stores are much smaller, and were personal favourites. The hip, edgy, creative, and fashion-forward looks of these smaller Euro brands are magical. The quality and design are off the charts, and pricing is competitive considering they’re more exclusive than mainstream brands.

The denim and casual bottoms selection at G-Star is exceptional and gender-fluid. You can barely distinguish the women’s and men’s sections, which is precisely how the brand wants it. The staff was fully decked out in G-Star and extremely attentive.

The Essentiel Antwerp store in SoHo is the only one in the US. Their creative and playful use of vibrant colour and pattern in a dressy way launches me into orbit. Most Belgian people speak Dutch, and since two Belgian staff members were working in the store, we spoke Dutch the entire time. Loved that! All the sales staff were dressed in Essentiel Antwerp and looked sensational. Both of these Euro brands seem to be gaining traction, and stock was running low due to increased popularity. Love that even more.

The Styling Room is a boutique filled mostly with lesser-known dressy Italian and Scandinavian brands, and an absolute hidden treasure. It was another favourite of the trip. The items are distinctive and unusual, and I’d never seen anything quite like them. Exquisite pieces with fabulous detailing in pretty colours, all with a “one-of-a-kind” integrity. Prices there ran the gamut. Some pieces were very expensive, while others were more competitively priced. Surprisingly, there was a good assortment of sizes too. The staff and owner were friendly, welcoming, and not in the slightest bit pushy. I felt completely at ease browsing, trying things on, and shopping there.

American brands J.Crew and Alex Mill were very good too. J.Crew seems to have dug itself out of its retail rut and downward spiral, and is offering fabulous things this season. Lovely colours and fabrics, fab collaborations, an assortment of fits, and good sales throughout the year. The J.Crew stores I visited were busy for good reason.

Alex Mill was created by Alex Drexler, son of retail legend Mickey Drexler, who is also heavily involved with the brand. Walking into their stores in SoHo and on the Upper East Side pleasantly transported me back to Benetton in the ’80s. Fantastic, colourful casual clothing in wonderful fabrics, with a strong gender-fluid focus. Preppy fabness.

Upper West Optical is an eyewear store on the Upper West Side, right next to the hotel where we stayed. It’s very unassuming, yet unexpectedly fabulous. The sales staff and optician wore scrubs in bright colours, which was different and quite charming.

I’m hard to fit and please when it comes to eyewear. I’d visited many other eyewear stores in NYC on this trip, including the quirky Fabulous Fanny’s, without much luck. I walked into Upper West Optical and found TWO absolutely stunning and perfect-for-me pairs of frames in five minutes. Unbelievable. I had hubs Greg take a look at the frames just to make sure I hadn’t lost my marbles, because one pair is extremely dramatic. When Greg said they were spectacular, I was reassured and it sealed the deal. I received a fantastic discount for buying two pairs, and can’t wait to get them in a couple of weeks.

Canadian Aritzia was a sight to behold. The gigantic three-story SoHo store was PACKED to the brim on Saturday afternoon, like I’ve seldom seen before. You could barely move on two floors, although the basement was more manageable. It was full of Gen Z teens and adults browsing, purchasing, and trying things on. The couches were filled with partners and parents patiently waiting for them to finish. I suggest going when it’s less busy if you’re into dressy and sporty attire in an assortment of fits and neutrals. The look is trend-driven, modern, urban, polished, and minimalist. The brand does wearable “everyday luxury” very well. Aritzia wins the prize for the busiest store I visited in Manhattan.

A Few Disappointments

I adore the dressy style integrity, colours, and outfit combinations of British ME+EM, and was excited to see one of their stores in person for the first time. Unfortunately, I found the fabrics and quality inferior to what I expected. The brand felt overpriced and didn’t live up to the hype. There was a $495 piece of knitwear on display with a hole in it, which I brought to a sales assistant’s attention. They promptly took it from me, only to hang it straight back where I’d found it, on full display with everything else. The staff seemed aloof and unprofessional. Based on this visit, the brand didn’t seem as good as it once was. Hopefully things will improve.

Lastly, I went into several consignment stores and The RealReal store: two on the Upper East Side, one on the Upper West Side, and a few in SoHo. I found them overpriced and disappointing. Items were selling for hundreds of dollars, and some for thousands, yet didn’t look particularly pristine. There were polyester tops and bottoms in the mix too. Some of our forum members find sublime treasures at bargain prices in consignment and thrift stores. Clearly, they weren’t shopping at these consignment stores!

YLF Shopping in NYC

We had multiple days of YLF gatherings in Manhattan and covered a fair bit of shopping ground. COS, Uniqlo, G-Star, The Styling Room, Ralph Lauren, and MANGO were the shopping favourites of our Fabbers on this trip. It was delightful seeing them have fun and buy items that were perfect for them.

Personally, I had a brilliant shopping trip, and brought back six wardrobe items: two pairs of specs from Upper West Optical that are made in Japan, a pair of pretty sneakerinas from J.Crew that I wore straight out of the store, an Italian modern classic orange turtleneck sweater from The Styling Room, edgy jodhpur jeans from G-Star, and a playfully patterned bomber jacket from Essentiel Antwerp. These items will forever remind me of celebrating 20 years of YLF and the launch of my first book.

NYC is definitely the shopping and style capital of the US. ‘Till we meet again, Manhattan.

1. Fun Fleece

Sporty fleece tops and toppers are having a fashion moment. They’ve moved beyond purely practical outdoor wear or “gear” and are being incorporated into everyday casual outfits, and sometimes worn in a Sporty Luxe manner. Many are patterned, colour blocked, textured, or trimmed in contrasting colours, which makes them cheerful and interesting. In other parts of the world, this type of plush fleece is called “borg,” which is why you’ll see the term used by British and European retailers.

Shout out to German brand Ulla Popken, which specializes in extended sizes US12 to US34. The brand is affordably priced, offers lovely quality, good fits and sales, and designs that are playful and fashionable. I enjoy visiting Ulla Popken stores with friends and family in Europe and the UK who like shopping there. I’ve recently recommended the brand to some US clients and friends who ordered online, and they are thrilled with their items and the service. 1. Elevated Athleisure

Athleisure track pants and joggers are comfortable, practical, super casual, and easy to wear, but they needn’t look like you’re on your way to the gym. The right support act can elevate them into a polished casual outfit. The juxtaposition of sporty bottoms with casual non-sporty pieces is precisely what makes the combination interesting.

Start with the top. Instead of an athletic sweatshirt, hoodie, workout top, or athletic tee, try a cotton button-down shirt, silky blouse, refined sweater, lace top, fitted turtleneck, or dressier tee. Feel free to create eye-catching visible layers between a tee and sweater. Tucking or semi-tucking the top can add structure and showcase the waistband, while leaving it untucked creates a more relaxed effect. A dressier topper like a bomber, moto, oversized blazer, aviator, utility jacket, trench coat, wool coat, or other type of casual jacket takes track pants even further away from their athletic roots.

Footwear can make an especially big difference. Sneakers are the natural choice because of their matching sporty vibe. Choosing a lower profile pair rather than a running shoe makes the look more casual and less athletic. Of course, feel free to wear athletic running shoes if those work best for your feet. Alternatively, juxtapose track pants with loafers, ballet flats, low-heeled pumps, Mary Janes, oxfords, clogs, mules, Western boots, or another type of casual boot. The dressier the shoe, the stronger the contrast with the sporty pants, which can look fresh, interesting, and current.

Finally, add accessories. A non-athletic casual bag, tote, or dressier handbag, statement eyewear, a scarf, and jewellery can do a lot of the heavy lifting. You don’t need to add all of these items. A fabulous bag, great shoes, and intentional jewellery might be enough. The idea is to make it clear that the track pants are a deliberate fashion choice. Sporty Luxe is dressier than Elevated Athleisure, and doesn’t usually involve traditional workout wear. The overall effect is dressier, sharper, more glam, and sometimes more fashion-forward.

Fabric and finish are especially important. Satin, silk, velvet, leather, cashmere and merino wool, faux fur, jacquards, lace, crisp shirting, fluid suiting, sequins, metallics, and other sumptuous textures can be juxtaposed with nylon, jersey, technical fabrics, and sporty knits. The contrast is intentional and quite dramatic. For some, it’s jarring and an acquired taste. You might even combine a very sporty item with something decidedly evening-like, such as track pants with a sequined top or tuxedo jacket. As we move into transitional weather in both hemispheres, here are ways to wear culottes in cooler weather. The most important concept to understand about modern fashion and style is that it’s an era of multiple style narratives. There is an extreme variation of silhouettes, fits, rise lengths, hem lengths, combinations, and proportions. Bottom widths can be slim, fluid, wide, and very wide. Pant lengths can be culotte, cropped, and full length. Rises can be low, low slung, mid, and high. Fits can be body con, tailored, fluid, and oversized. Skirt and dress lengths can be mini, knee length, midi, and maxi. Skirts can be flared and pencil. All sorts of proportions are created. In short, there is everything, everywhere, all at once. You choose your style narrative and run with it.

Fashion today is about taking the best from every decade, remixing it, and modernizing it. The emphasis is less on new silhouettes and more on combining and juxtaposing items, vibes, proportions, and colours to create a refreshed look. There is no single stylish way to dress, which gives us tremendous freedom to pick and choose. Feast, snack, or fast from the buffet of trends, and most importantly, do your own thing. Wear what makes you happy, and feel good in your outfit.

1. Opposites Live Side By Side

Perhaps the biggest trend of all is the enormous variety in fashion, which goes hand in hand with the last trend on this list – Do Your Own Thing. You’ll find just about anything at this point, given that fashion is bringing back the best of every decade.

Opposing silhouettes and aesthetics are equally current, and one does not cancel the other out. Oversized items are shown alongside extremely fitted ones. Maximalism coexists with minimalism. Romantic looks share the stage with sporty ones. Bright colours are as fashionable as earthy neutrals. Polished outfits are shown alongside intentionally RATE (rough around the edges) looks. Boho Chic smiles at Fresh Preppy. Rock ‘n Roll nods at Athleisure. Short and long lengths reign supreme. Bombshell and boxy cuts. Quiet and loud luxury. Neutrals and non-neutrals. Solids and patterns. Dressy and casual. Glam and athletic. Sporty Luxe thrives alongside Tailored Classics. Gender-neutral items are in the mix too, along with a whole lot of juxtaposed items that create refreshed looks.

Knee lengths are the “newest” length for skirts and dresses, which means a length that hovers around the knee. A little above, a little below, or on the kneecap is knee length. Of course, there are plenty of minis, midis, and maxis too. Puddle-length pants are the most fashion-forward length, although shorter full lengths are most popular. You have the power to choose your fit, length, and outfit proportions. Size up if you don’t like things too tight. Size down if you don’t like them too big. Wear items with the same fit in one outfit, or mix it up for variation.

2. ’80s and ’00s Influences

The unapologetically expressive and glam ’80s influence current fashion in a big way. Think bubble hems, slim tapered pants, ra-ra skirts, sharp shoulders, pleated high-waisted carrot pants, oversized fits, ruffles, stirrup pants, dolman sleeves, dropped shoulders, blouses with bows and neckties, balloon pants, defined waists, wide belts, double belts, hitch-up skirts, acid wash, neon, matching sets, clashing brights, all sorts of pastels, statement tracksuits, pencil skirts, hi-tops, peplums, boiler suits, mullets, boxy cropped tops, yoke and basque skirts, fingerless lace gloves, and scrunchies. These looks are modernized, architectural, and remixed to look chic and grown-up without losing their delightful retro charm.

Round silhouettes borrowed from the ’80s have an architectural integrity and are in full swing. Think rounded shoulders, balloon sleeves, barrel, horseshoe, and lantern pants, shorts and jeans, bubble-hem jackets, and top-heavy oval silhouettes. Fits and shapes are exaggerated and playful.

You’ll see fashion from the ’00s come through too. There are low rises and low slung pants and jeans, but the silhouettes are relaxed, wide, and very wide rather than skinny and low-rise. There are also low slung skirts and belts. Think band tees, graphic tees, moto jackets, shrunken and fitted short blazers, slim bottoms tucked into tall boots, tailored button-down shirts, side-swept fringes, bootcuts, fitted double-zipped cardigans, long layered tank tops, lace trims on skirts and tops, long lace camisoles, tees with defined waists, long slim tops, handkerchief hems, and big handbags. There are also lots of black, white, and grey combinations.

The decades can be worn literally, although incorporating a retro piece into a thoroughly modern outfit generally looks fresher.

3. Reds, Purples, Bright Blue and Chartreuse

Autumn and Winter colour palettes are not limited to dark and muted shades. Red continues to make a strong statement, from bright tomato red and fire engine red to cabernet, scarlet, maroon, and burgundy. Shades of purple are strong, so think berries, plums, and eggplant. Bright blues like cobalt, royal blue, and electric blue are having a fashion moment. Acidic chartreuse and yellow-greens are another punchy addition to the on trend mix.

Wear these colours monochromatically from head to toe, combine them with each other, remix them with other brights or muted colours, combine them with varying tones of the same colour, or use them to complement neutrals.

4. Earth Tones

At the other end of the colour spectrum are versatile earthy neutrals, which continue to be popular across the globe. Shades of chocolate, toffee, tan, camel, cognac, olive, moss, taupe, cinnamon, gingerbread, whiskey, sand, and stone are plentiful. Wear several earth tones together for a tonal effect, combine them with traditional neutrals, or juxtapose them with brights, pastels, and jewel tones.

5. Soft Pinks

Soft pink brings a light, gentle, and unexpected softness to the colder months. Think blush, ballet pink, powder pink, shell pink, milkshake pink, ice pink, and antique pink across knitwear, coats, jackets, trousers, skirts, dresses, footwear, and accessories. Soft pink looks especially fresh worn with the season’s abundance of chocolate brown, toffee, burgundy, grey, navy, cream, blue denim, eggplant, and bright red. It can be worn head-to-toe for a quietly dramatic effect, used as a soft accent, or toughened up with hard edged, sporty, black, or menswear inspired pieces. It’s pretty, and provides a welcome counterpoint to the darker and earthier colours that typically dominate Autumn and Winter.

6. Tantalizing Textures

There are all sorts of fabrics with interesting surface interest for Autumn and Winter. Think velvet, velour, corduroy, suede, leather, faux fur, shearling, bouclé, tweed, brocade, jacquard, lace, satin, fuzzy knits, chunky knits, quilting, embroidery, fringe, feathers, topstitching, and other fabrics and finishes that beg to be touched.

Texture can make a simple and neutral outfit look interesting without adding colour or pattern. Varying textures can be layered and remixed for an interesting minimal or maximal effect. Combine something smooth with something fuzzy, shiny with matte, crisp with soft, or refined with rugged. Texture is particularly effective in colder weather because many of the fabrics that provide warmth also provide visual interest. Pile it on, or make one richly textured item the star of the outfit.

7. Poetcore

Poetcore borrows from the wardrobes of poets, artists, and thinkers across the ages, remixing the lot with a whole lot of modern. It’s romantic, literary, and a little bohemian. Frilly pirate shirts, billowing puff-sleeve tops, blouses and shirts with big bows, ribbon-tied necklines, and romantic ruffles are combined with tailored trousers, flowing skirts, blazers, plaids, and waistcoats. Brown and grey tweeds and brown leather are a good match for this trend. Think Victorian-inspired footwear like lace-up boots, brogue oxfords, and Mary Janes. Vintage jewellery is the accessory of choice. The palette is muted, mostly neutral, and texture-rich.

The look can be dramatic and theatrical, or toned down by combining one Poetcore piece with jeans, trousers, a simple skirt, or another wardrobe essential.

8. Fresh Preppy

Think quintessential Ralph Lauren looks and you’re on the right track. Polo shirts, rugby stripes, nautical stripes, crisp shirting, colourful silk scarves, shirtdresses, vertical-striped shirting and blazers, striped neckties, shirts with neckties, candy-coloured sweatshirts, autumnal plaids, textured cabled knitwear, wide pleated trousers, pleated skirts, socks with loafers, popped collars, tailored blazers, quarter-zip knitted tops, collegiate sweaters with V-necks in pullover and cardigan silhouettes, tennis and cricket sweaters in tailored and oversized silhouettes, striped grosgrain belts, satchels, chambray, baseball caps, and lots of argyle.

This fresh take on Preppy style is less uniform, more playful, and REMIXED with other trends. Newer interpretations are oversized, sporty, colourful, eclectic, or deliberately mismatched.

9. Dark Romance

This trend blends gothic drama with dressy elegance, creating a moody and romantic aesthetic. The beauty of Dark Romance lies in balancing hard edge with soft and pretty. The palette combines deep tones like black, eggplant, ink blue, plum, chocolate, and burgundy with dusty pinks, light blues, shades of white, and metallics for contrast.

Think head-to-toe textured black or other very dark solid colours, or patterns with black backgrounds. Think black lace, lots of lace trim, sheer fabrics, tulle, sequins, patent leather, textured leather, velvet, moody dark florals, textured knits, tweedy wovens, corsets, rosettes, satin, chiffon, silk, jacquards, brocades, chokers, gloves, cameo pendants, dark nail polish, dark eyewear, smoky eye makeup, and dark lipstick. Interpret the looks minimally or maximally, and across the seasons. There’s a hint of Steampunk too.

10. Retro Grace

There is a strong return to graceful, dressy, ladylike, TAILORED dressing with a retro sensibility. The look draws inspiration from several decades, particularly the polished elegance of the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s, but is interpreted in a thoroughly modern way. Think beautifully tailored jackets, skirt suits, knee-length skirts and dresses, pencil skirts, peplum jackets and tops, fitted cardigans, silk blouses, defined waists, softly structured shoulders, refined fabrics, and matching separates.

Retro Grace looks can be formal and polished, but they can also be relaxed, playful, dramatic, or a little quirky. The key is making the look feel current rather than like a period costume. Mix retro inspired pieces with modern wardrobe items, incorporate contemporary proportions and fabrics, or juxtapose something ladylike with something casual, sporty, oversized, or unexpected. A vintage or vintage inspired piece can look fabulous when there is enough NOW in the rest of the outfit. The result is refined, nostalgic, and current.

11. Utility, Athleisure and Sporty Luxe

Athleisure is full-throttle casual and sporty from head to toe. There are no dressy components in an Athleisure outfit. Instead, there is usually a component of high performance technical fabric in the mix. Sporty Luxe remixes sporty touches with dressier pieces, making juxtaposition key. Sporty Luxe looks are dressy apart from the sporty accents that relax the look.

Think fashion sweatshirts, hoodies, sneakers, joggers, track pants, track tops, sporty tuxedo striping, bombers, baseball caps, fleece jackets, leggings, anoraks, large-weave mesh tops, rugby tops, colour-blocking, tank tops, body bags, quarter-zip tops, cargos, belt bags, and bowling bags. Matching sweats sets are big too.

The utility trend draws inspiration from functional workwear and military uniforms. Think cargo pockets, zippers, snaps, self-belts, epaulettes, and adjustable tabs that add both structure and visual interest. Fabrics are typically durable, like cotton twill, canvas, denim, and technical blends. Colour palettes lean earthy with shades like olive, tan, toffee, navy, black, and charcoal. Utility pieces range from cargo pants, carpenter pants, and field jackets to boiler suits, belted shirtdresses, and vests with lots of pockets. Wear a utility look from head to toe, or remix utility pieces with dressy pieces.

12. Bombers, Aviators and Funnel Necks

Iconic classics like bomber and aviator jackets continue their strong fashion momentum, and can be thought of as elevated essentials. Silhouettes range from short and fluid to oversized and dramatic. They are usually made of leather, faux leather, nylon, wool, shearling, denim, and sherpa, and can exude a rugged aesthetic.

Funnel necks are another important and insulating direction. They can be found on bombers and aviators, other types of outerwear, and knitwear. Their high, structured collars stand up around the neck, creating a clean, architectural effect. Wear these toppers casually with jeans and pants, or juxtapose their sporty and rugged integrity with skirts, dresses, lace, and other dressier pieces.

13. Band and Military Jackets

Marching band and military jackets are back, adding another layer to the ’80s influence on fashion. Think cropped and tailored silhouettes with stand collars, statement buttons, braiding, piping, epaulettes, decorative hardware, and a distinctly regal or theatrical quality. The look has much older roots in ceremonial military uniforms, but became a memorable part of ’80s fashion through the New Romantics and pop stars like Adam Ant and Michael Jackson. Band jackets enjoyed another big fashion moment in the ’00s, so there’s some overlap between the decades. They look ornate and dramatic in dark neutrals with high contrast trim, or soft and pretty in light colours with low contrast trim. They are an effective way to add structure and a touch of maximalism to an outfit.

14. Fitted Tops

After years of oversized tops dominating fashion, extremely fitted tops provide another option. Both fits sit at opposite ends of the fit spectrum. Think tight tees, turtlenecks, knitted tops, shirts, blouses, and cropped styles that hug the torso. They are especially effective worn with voluminous pants and skirts, creating a dramatic difference in proportions. Of course, fluid and oversized tops haven’t gone anywhere. Opposites live side by side.

15. Printed Jeans

This is an additional trend I’m adding to my denim forecast. Patterned jeans are fringe trending, and can look very dramatic. Think florals, animal prints, plaids, checks, stripes, abstract designs, and other motifs printed, woven, embroidered, or jacquarded onto denim. Some versions are subtle and tonal, while others are bold, high contrast, and decidedly maximal. The patterns add visual interest to familiar denim silhouettes, from relaxed straights and wide legs to barrels, flares, and cropped styles. Patterned jeans can do the talking when paired with simple solids, or be combined with other patterns for a more adventurous look. They’re an effective way to refresh a jeans capsule without changing the practicality and ease of denim.

16. Sheer and Layered Dressing

Sheer fabrics continue into cold weather. Mesh, chiffon, lace, and other transparent fabrics appear in tops, skirts, and dresses. For Autumn and Winter, sheer pieces can be useful for layered dressing or milder temperatures. Wear them over camisoles, tees, and turtlenecks, or under jackets, knitwear, and dresses. The effect can be subtly textured or dramatically transparent.

For intentionally layered looks, layer tanks and vests over long sleeved tops and henleys. Layer tees under dresses. Layer tees over button-down shirts and blouses. Layer multiple tees. Layer two skirts. Play with different lengths. Wrap scarves over pants and skirts. Wear white tees under sweaters. Drape capes and wraps over anything. Wear jackets and vests under coats. Wear vests over jackets and coats. Sport more than one belt, and belt multiple tops. Drape knitwear over jackets like wraps. Wrap knitwear around the waist.

17. Maximalism and Eclectic Remixes

More can be more. Pattern mixing, colour mixing, unusual proportions, texture mixing, decorative details, lots of layers, lots of accessories, statement eyewear, decorative nails, and other multiple and unexpected combinations are part of the maximal fashion landscape. Eclectic remixes are less about following a formula and more about putting together pieces that aren’t obvious partners. The result can look creative, arty, playful, dramatic, or delightfully chaotic.

18. Waistcoats and Gilets

Waistcoats and gilets continue to gain momentum, providing an extra layer without the bulk of sleeves. Tailored waistcoats can be short, long, fitted, fluid, structured, or oversized, and are worn buttoned up as tops or layered over shirts, blouses, tees, turtlenecks, and dresses. They can match trousers or skirts to create a suit, or be worn as a contrasting standalone piece. Some versions have a distinctly menswear-inspired integrity, while others are softer or more fashion-forward.

Gilets provide the more casual and practical side of the trend. Think quilted, padded, puffer, fleece, faux fur, shearling, denim, utility, and knitted versions. They add warmth and texture to an outfit while allowing plenty of freedom of movement, and work particularly well for transitional weather and indoor layering.

19. BIG Full Length Pants and Jeans

Big, full length pants and jeans continue to make a strong statement. Think wide and extra-wide legs, relaxed fits, slouchy silhouettes, low-slung fits, dramatic pleats, barrel shapes, and plenty of fabric that creates movement and volume. Some styles are moderately roomy and easy to wear, while others are deliberately enormous and very oversized. Hem lengths are long, often skimming the ground, covering much of the foot, or puddle at the foot. Rises run the gamut from low and mid to very high.

The volume can be balanced with a fitted or tucked top, or amplified with an equally fluid and oversized top or topper. Fabrics range from rigid denim and substantial wool to soft suiting, corduroy, velvet, and beautifully drapey fabrications. The effect can be tailored and elegant, relaxed and slouchy, arty and architectural, or casual and sporty. Big bottoms are still big news for Autumn and Winter 2026.

20. Cropped Flares, Flares and Slim Straights

Cropped flares, or kick flares, full-length flares, bootcuts, and slim straights or cigarette silhouettes are gaining momentum alongside the enormous pants and jeans trend. They provide a streamlined alternative to major volume, and are another great example of how opposites live side by side in fashion. Cropped flares are fitted through the hip and thigh before kicking out at the hem, while full-length flares and bootcuts create a longer line. Slim straights are narrower than relaxed straights without being super skinnies, although super skinnies continue to have their place too. Super skinnies are great to tuck into tall boots in foul weather.

After many seasons of very wide bottoms, these narrower silhouettes can look surprisingly fresh. Wear them with fitted tops for a long and lean effect, or juxtapose them with fluid, boxy, and oversized tops and toppers. There is no need to choose between big and streamlined bottoms. Both directions are current and can happily coexist in the same wardrobe.

21. Knee Length Skirts and Dresses

Knee length skirts and dresses are gaining momentum after many seasons of midi, midaxi, and maxi lengths dominating the fashion landscape. Hemlines can finish just above, on, or just below the knee, creating proportions that look fresh and retro. Silhouettes run the gamut from straight, A-line, pleated, and flared to pencil, fit-and-flare, tiered, and softly draped. Dresses can be tailored and structured, fluid and romantic, or simple and streamlined. They also tie in well with the season’s Retro Grace, Fresh Preppy, and Dark Romance trends.

22. Culottes and Long Shorts

Culottes and long shorts are gaining momentum for Autumn and Winter, providing another alternative to cropped pants, full-length pants, jeans, and skirts. Culottes are generally wide, roomy, and skirt-like, and finish anywhere from below the knee to above the calf. Long shorts are more streamlined and finish on or just below the knee. They come in tailored and fluid versions, with or without pleats.

For colder weather, both are styled with knitwear, jackets, coats, and plenty of layering. Fabrics become more substantial too, with wool, tweed, corduroy, denim, leather, and heavier suiting coming into play. Wearing culottes and long shorts with tall boots is particularly effective in Autumn and Winter because the boots insulate the lower leg while creating a seasonally appropriate look. Add socks or hosiery for even more warmth. The effect can be polished and dressy, preppy, sporty, arty, avant-garde, or casually relaxed.

23. Western

Classic Western looks continue to influence fashion with their rugged and rustic spirit. Inspired by classic cowboy style, the look incorporates elements like cowboy boots, fringe, suede, leather belts, oversized belt buckles, shirts with yokes, prairie-inspired dresses, barn jackets, bootcut jeans, denim vests, denim trucker jackets, denim shirts, Stetsons, tiered maxi skirts, horse patterns, pony prints, cow prints, plaid shirts, bandanas, weathered brown leather accessories, and lots of embroidered details. The idea is to remix Western elements into any outfit, thereby creating unexpected combinations and maximizing the power of juxtaposition.

24. Shallow V-Necks

Unlike the traditional V-neck, this version begins higher on the chest and creates a more subtle and tailored plunge. Some retailers call the neckline a high V-neck. You’ll find the high V-neckline on tops, knitwear, cardigans, sweater vests, and dresses. The shape draws the eye vertically, which can visually lengthen the torso and neck. The result is fresh without revealing too much skin. If V-necks are your thing, you might like the current update. If high necklines are your thing, the higher V-neck might be a way to enjoy a lower neckline while maintaining good coverage. It’s a subtle trend, but one that can make an old wardrobe essential feel elevated.

25. Pencil Skirts

Pencil skirts are having another fashion moment. They can be tailored and corporate, stretchy and comfortable, casual in denim, luxurious in leather, or soft and fluid. Lengths vary from around the knee to midi, with knee lengths being especially NOW. Wear them with fitted tops for a streamlined silhouette, or create more interesting proportions with fluid knitwear, oversized shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets.

26. Statement Socks

Statement socks are having a fashion moment, becoming a deliberate and visible part of an outfit rather than something purely practical. Think bright colours, bold patterns, stripes, argyle, Fair Isle, lace, ribbing, sparkle, metallics, embellishment, and interesting textures. Some make a strong statement, while others add a subtle pop of colour, texture, or pattern.

They add warmth as well as visual interest in cold weather. Wear them tonally with an outfit, match them to another colour in your look, or deliberately create high contrast. They can peek out between cropped pants and shoes, or be worn visibly with skirts, dresses, and shorts. Statement socks are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to refresh an outfit, experiment with a trend, and add a playful finishing touch.

27. Relaxed Glamour and Elevated Everyday

It’s very current to relax a glam look and elevate an everyday casual look. This brings us back to the important theme of juxtaposition. You might relax dressy pieces by combining them with denim, motos, aviators, bombers, slouchy bags, crossbody bags, or casual footwear. Wear a tee under a blazer. A sweatshirt or rugby top with a fancy skirt and heels. Throw a tuxedo jacket over utility pants or leggings. Wear a moto with sweats. Wear elegant jewellery and a dressy bag with athleisure. Wear dressy clothes with flats. Add sparkle to jeans. Wear a cashmere wrap or ruana with joggers. Add a silk scarf and pretty sandals to parachute pants and a shirt. Add chunky glam necklaces to slouchy sweaters, sweatshirts, and knitted tops. Wear a short puffer with a fancy skirt. Add a crossbody bag to dressy attire. Add a fancy bag to jeans. Sport a tote with cocktail attire.

Style your hair, wear statement eyewear, throw on a belt, and add jewellery to a simple shorts-and-tee outfit. There are countless ways to relax some looks and elevate others. Choose the ways that best work for you and your style.

28. Novelty Patterns and Slogans

Novelty patterns and clothing with slogans are packed with personality and a sense of humour, and can create interesting conversations. You’ll find just about anything in the form of a pattern or slogan on a wardrobe item these days when you search for it. If you find a top or tee with a pattern or graphic that is meaningful or nostalgic in some way, wear it with a happy heart and feel right on trend. Make a subtle or bold statement with quirky pieces. Wear these looks casually, or remix them with dressier pieces.

29. Asymmetry

Asymmetry continues to add visual interest and movement to clothing. Think one-shouldered tops and dresses, diagonal necklines, uneven and handkerchief hems, asymmetric draping, off-centre ruching and pleating, diagonal button placements, and wrap silhouettes that create intentionally uneven lines. Asymmetry can be subtle, with a slightly skewed neckline or hem, or dramatic and sculptural with cascading fabric and exaggerated proportions.

Asymmetrical outfit details are an effective way to make a simple solid coloured item look distinctive without relying on pattern or embellishment. Wear one asymmetric piece as the focal point of an outfit, or combine it with other unusual proportions for a more maximal effect. This trend demonstrates how the cut and construction of an item can provide all the visual interest an outfit needs.

30. Do Your Own Thing

There is no one way to be stylish. Fashion is a melting pot of sartorial choices, and increasing diversity in fashion with each passing year means that there is something for everyone. Trends are no longer strictly seasonal, and fads barely exist. Trends are becoming harder to define, and at some point they will be irrelevant. That’s why creating a signature style and evolving it over time is one of the most important and relevant trends of them all. Wear the trends, don’t wear them, remix them, repeat them, or reinvent them. Do your own thing!

These days, there are too many simultaneous fashion directions for everyone to look the same. That’s good news because trends are there to inspire and provide options, not dictate what we should wear. Pick the trends that work for your style, body, lifestyle, climate, budget, and sartorial preferences. Remix them with what you already own. Wear older silhouettes that make you happy. And combine things in ways that feel honest to you.
