Is a shelter a sense of safe haven, a place to protect ourselves from the natural elements, from the unrelenting pressures of modern life or, perhaps, a place or space to reflect on our innermost thoughts.

“Shelter: On Kindness” examines the ideas of nurture and kindness through the filter of the writings of psychoanalyst and author Adam Phillips and historian Barbara Taylor on the history of kindness.

Yes, I decided to start another initiative in my blog. Every month, I will be giving away one or two images as desktop wallpaper calendars. It is free and you’re welcome to distribute it. Each wallpaper will be available in a number of most popular (in my and this website statistics opinion) sizes, but I’m open for suggestions.

The first image will be a Smoky Grand Canyon, Arizona. On the day (and the only day) when I’ve been there, firefighters decided to lit some controlled fires and most of the canyon was covered by smoke.

SYD-BKK-FRA-KBP-FRA-SFO-SYD equals 50 hours in the air. Landed yesterday early morning. Flight around the world is over.

Spent last month visiting relatives and friends in Kiev, Ukraine and travelling around California, Utah and Arizona. My camera was with me all the time. Came back with 140Gb of RAW images from:

Back from holidays …

As you probably noticed, I’m back from Christmas and New Year holidays and busy processing new photos. Lots of material. I estimate that I’ll publish new images and descriptions of some great places at least twice a week from now on – so stay tuned, or, alternatively, subscribe to RSS feeds.

BTW, I’ve improved feed for the latest images, now you don’t need a looking glass for it. Thumbnail images are a bit larger now.

Another way of getting updates is to add me as a contact on Flickr, I cross-post all images from this site to my gallery there.

I don’t say that I’m surprised, but processing RAW files form the 5DMarkII takes a bit more time. 25-30Mb RAW files require a bit more processing power, comparing to RAWs from my old Canon 20D, especially for panoramas. Previously, it took minutes for PTGui to stitch an HDR panorama. Now, for huge TIFFs, produced by 5DMkII, it takes hours.

All of this is happening on QuadCore 2.7Ghz, 8GB RAM and separate HDDs for data and temporary files. As CPU and RAM are almost never 100% utilised, it seems that HDDs are creating this bottleneck. Or, it can be Vista … hmm.

As you probably noticed, we had a quite long downtime over past two days … I’m very sorry for this, it was caused by my webhosting provider data centre migration, it didn’t go exceptionally well. On the bright side, theoretically, we should experience faster service now. I don’t blame them, but I think they could handle it better … in terms of keeping customers informed.

So far, I didn’t notice that something is broken, but if you find something wrong, please let me know.

- Deep Sky Astrophotography for Beginners. If you don’t have those expensive telescopes and tracking devices, you can try using image stacking techique to get some good results.

- For long trips, I usually do some homework and prepare a spreadsheet with sunrise/sunset times for each location for each day. It is good to be prepared, but I was always hoping to have a more dynamic way of determining sunset and sunrise times. UTMDATA for S60 Symbian-based mobile phones - this small freeware application runs on the mobile phone, can read current GPS position from the built-in or external receiver and calculate current sunrise and sunset times.

- I have also spent some time this week, exploring different ways to fit graduated filters on super wide-angle lenses like Canon 14mm F2.8 II. Here are some useful forum topics and guides:

BlackRapid R-Strap RS-1

As I mentioned in my last weekly links, I was planning to get one of these R-Straps. I received one today and, so far, I think that it is the most convenient camera strap I have ever tried or seen. And it is not expensive as well.

I’ve got RS-1 version – nice and simple, I don’t really need all those pockets for flash cards and mobile phones.

In preparation to bring this blog back to life I finally found some spare time to fix RSS feeds and setup some feeds via Feedburner. All feeds have english and russian language versions, you can subscribe to latest images, latest blog posts or place descriptions. I’ve also created multiplexed feeds that join all three mentioned above into single feed.

To subscribe, click on corresponding RSS icons on the fron page or follow to the subscription page to see all options.

Us – are all poor people who monitors photo-related rumors daily in hopes that Canon announces a replacement for Canon 5D. There were many rumors regarding 10th of June – “two stars from Canon”, “wait till the 10th of June”, etc. All these cryptic ads from Canon kept hopes that 5DMkII (3D, 6D ,7D, “Cobra” whatever they call it) will be announced today.

Well, it didn’t happen, but now we have one more entry-level dSLR and next generation 430EX.

From my professional experience I always knew that hardware vendors are always looking for opportunity to point fingers to someone else. Same happens to software developers.

Last month I’ve upgraded WordPress to the latest release and updated all plugins as well, everything went fine except a plugin that crossposts to LiveJournal – ljxp. After activation, blog stopped working with weird error … the only solution to get it up again was to disable LJXP.

Latest version of plugin didn’t solve the problem, so I decided to ask plugin author to have a look at it. As I expected, he quickly decided that it is a fault of another plugin that I’m using (Gengo – multilanguage support).

PTGui Pro – panoramic stitching software

For those who wants to create good panoramas I’d really recommend trying PTGui. It is based of famous Panorama Tools, but much more user friendly comparing to PTAssembler GUI.

Very flexible, visual and fast. PTGui Pro version has one additional and very important feature – HDR panoramas. Results are more than impressive.

It is not free, but definetly worth that money.
