I have been very busy since my last post on August 10th.  I just started my junior year of college at Illinois State University and not only am I adjusting to my new classes, but I am also working on several new projects as well.  The one I want to focus on for this post is MyBrute Game.

MyBrute Game, which I am also calling MyBrute Game Guide, is my latest attempt at blogging and I really think this one will be successful.  Over the past few days I have developed a unique WordPress theme (almost 100% modded from an original theme called White), rewritten the comments.php file in WordPress for the first time, and create 7 posts to get my blog rolling.

What is MyBrute and why blog about it?

In case you have never heard of MyBrute, it is a simple online game where you create a MyBrute character and then battle other MyBrute’s to gain experience, get new weapons, and level up.  I have been playing MyBrute for a couple months now and it is very addicting.  You are only allowed to fight 3 brutes a day (except on your first day, you are allowed to fight 6, which is detailed more here), but for some reason I really enjoy those 3 fights and look forward to them every day.

I created a blog to blog about MyBrute because I noticed that it’s really an untapped niche.  There are not a lot of sites out there explaining what MyBrute is and it seems most of it’s traffic comes from people promoting it word of mouth and their pupil referral link (expecially on Twitter).  Plus, although MyBrute is a fairly simple game when it comes to game play, there is a lot of behind the scenes things that are good to know if you actually want to be a successful player.

So far my posts have been mostly about how to get more pupils, but I plan to go more in-depth soon.

I realize that my blog is only a few days old, but one thing I really want to push onto my readers is that interaction is the key element to making a blog successful.  Last night I spent several hours looking over WordPress plugins trying to figure out which ones would benefit my readers and this blog the most.  The first one I installed is called 140follow.

This plugin was created by a German guy, but that does not really matter because all you have to do is download it, install it, and activate it.  Once activated if a user makes a comment that is 140 characters or greater their link (provided in the comment form) will be made dofollow.  If they make a quick comment that is under 140 characters the link will be nofollow and it will be ignored by search engines.

This plugin should help encourage visitors like yourself to comment because by commenting you are building interaction on the blog and at the same time getting a free backlink that search engines will recongize and credit you for!  You can also now post comments directly from Twitter.

Twitter Blog

Okay, first, in order to use this next plugin you need to be following me on Twitter.  Twitter Blog is a great plugin that will automatically post new blog posts on my Twitter and if you respond on Twitter to those posts your reply will show up as a comment on the blog.  While it sounds really awesome, we have yet to see it in action (this is the first blog post since it was activated).

h3n.org added to EasySubmits

I thought I also should mention that h3n.org is now at 144 links (as of this post) and more and more are being added every hour.  I e-mailed the guys that run EasySubmits.com, an awesome free semi-automated directory submission service, and they added h3n just a few hours later.  I definitely suggest you give EasySubmits a look and submit your site to h3n.org!

I was feeling a little bit bored and ambitious today so I decided to start a new project.  I have about 30 domains sitting in my GoDaddy account waiting to be developed, but the one that really has been bugging me is h3n.org.

I purchased the domain for $20 on NetBuilders Webmaster Forum a few months ago with the intention of building my own custom short URL (like TinyURL.com) site.  I even had a logo developed for the site, which cost me another $30.  Even after that $50 investment I just let the domain sit with nothing on it for a couple months.  Well, today I decided to turn it into a directory.

I have built several directories in the past because they are always fun to design and easy to sell.  For example, I created Yooley.com (which has been redesigned since I owned it) and sold it on DigitalPoint Forums 2 weeks later for $420!  So, earlier today I got to work in developing h3n.org into a free general web directory.

Creating a web directory

The first step to creating your own web directory (once you have your domain) is to find a script to run it.  The most popular and probably the best web directory script is PHP Link Directory, which is often referred to as phpLD.  It is very easy to edit and has a very powerful backend.

So, after downloading and installed phpLD I went to work editing the default template.  The first thing I did to edit the template was add a wrapper id to the main css file (main.css).  My wrapper will allow to me change the directory template from a fluid width to a fixed width (780px is what I have it currently set at).  If you do not understand what the means basically what I did was make it so that instead of having the site spread across the entire screen I put it in a fixed width box.  I like working with fixed wrappers because you then have a better idea of how much space exactly you have to work with.

Tabs

One distinctive feature h3n.org has over your typical phpLD directory is the tabs at the top of the design.  I found a simple css tutorial on how to create the tabs at this page.  With a few adjustments I got them looking pretty nice at the top of my design.

Twitter

Right now Twitter is by far the hottest way to increase traffic to your site.  After getting the site setup and ready to go the first thing I did was go and create a Twitter account for my new directory.  It turned out that the username h3n was taken so I settled with h3n_org.  I designed the Twitter profile with the background from the site and my “picture” to the logo egg.

Another nice feature phpLD has is an RSS feed for your directory.  I figured a good way to promote h3n and the links being added to it would be to send out a new tweet whenever a site was added.  One service that will allow you to do that is RSS2Twitter.  RSS2Twitter is update my h3n.org Twitter profile every half hour with the most recent links approved on h3n.org.  The account already has 20 followers!

Hello and welcome to my new blog!

A lot of you reading this have known me as my online alias stickycarrots for a long time.  I have been using it for about 8 years.  I have been going back and forth trying to decide whether or not I wanted to continue to be know as stickycarrots or try to give myself a new image.  I mean, which I first registered the AIM screenname stickycarrots and setup my Hotmail account I was only 13 years old.  Isn’t it time for something new and more professional?  Well, obviously my decision was no.

I have spent 8 years building a rock solid resume under this name so why change it?  Instead, why not try to build it even bigger!  So, that is my intention with this blog.  Build my brand and reputation as stickycarrots instead of running away from it.  How do I plan to do that?  By providing you with quality information that will help you start making money online or start making MORE money online.

So, who are you?

If you are just stumbling upon this blog and have no idea who stickycarrots (I) am, allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Luke Kling.  I’m a 21 year old college student  at Illinois State University.  I am studying Information Systems, but my main concentration is Web Application Development.  Right now I am trying my damnedest  to make as much money possible to help pay for school, pay my rent, and allow me to indulge in some of my other addictions (no worries, that sounds a lot worse than it is).

Those are just a few of the things I love and I am sure I will be talking about them in the upcoming posts.  To get the ball rolling on this blog I plan to make a post every day for the first month at least.  Over the next week I plan to do an in-depth analysis of my experiences with the Twitter marketing software TweetAdder.  I just purchased it today and so far I am a HUGE fan of it.
