Expanding my painting vocabulary by
spraying fluid acrylics on yupo provided a new
path to explore! My experiences with yupo in the
past have been labor intensive and the results did
not provide this type of result.
This technique held my interest and enthusiasm.
Once the paint is sprayed on, the shapes continue
to change, even as sections of the painting dry.

My inspiration for spraying the paint came from
Mary Ann Beckwith, our most recent
Watercolor Society of Oregon juror.

This painting is further exploration of using a "chair" design
as a start for a composition.
My initial step for these "chair" paintings is to start with
a splattered texture. Then the chair is painted to reveal
the intitial splatters.
The best part was adding this dog to create
a story, that could be interpreted by the viewer.

February 28th 7-8:30 pm. Participants will meet at The

Kathleen Conover shared her amazing knowledge
about composition, value and design to those of us
in her workshop at Menucha Retreat and Conference Center,
Nov. 12 - 15th.
This painting was done in the evenings after class. One
of my personal art goals for this week was to layer acrylic
paint on yupo and it provided exciting new possibilities for
textures.
In the next post I will share a painting that reflects what Kathleen taught.

Play with Composition - More Changes with Photoshop Elements

Donna Zagotta impressed me, years ago, when she
said, think of a painting that you like, as "The Mother
Painting". New ideas can be born from the parts of the
painting that you like. I like this composition and created it
from the demo painting used in the last post, by cropping
and removing one seagull.
Here is how this part of the painting looked before
I removed the seagull:

I used the Clone Stamp Tool to sample surrounding
sand and place it on the seagull, until it was "erased".

Play with Composition - So Many Choices When Using Photoshop Elements

The artists in my October class, at The Village Gallery,
suggested that this demo painting needed something
in the distance.
The foggy feel of the graded wash wasn't enough.

We were studying graded washes, reflections in the sand,
applying white on a graded wash and creating a horizontal
band compostion.
Before I added the distant waves in the above image,
using Photoshop Elements,
the painting looked like this:

For those of you interested in the Photoshop Elements Tools:
First I sampled the gray blue on the bottom
of the painting with the Eye Dropper Tool.
With that gray blue in the Foreground Color Box,
I used the Gradient Tool > Reflected Gradient and pulled
a short line and then a longer line to create the two lines
in the distance.
Changing the Foreground Color Box to white, I used the
Brush Tool set on transparent settings of 30% and less to
play with the foam of the waves.

Powerful ocean waves, splashing against rocks
were painted by the above artists in my Monday
morning acrylic painting class at The Village
Gallery of Arts.
We studied the parts and structure of waves, as well
as how to create more dynamic compositions by
contrasting straight lines with curved lines.

Just returned from Gearhart, Oregon (on the Oregon Coast

The center of this painting started as a demo in my Monday
morning class at The Village Gallery of Arts.
We are exploring textures and this is an example of how
to combine sand, gesso and acrylic paints.
The area that surrounds the center was done with acrylic,
molding paste and burnished with black gesso.

This painting will be at R.Blooms, 267 A Avenue, Lake Oswego
this Saturday, July 21st.
I will be showing and selling my work there,
as well as doing painting demonstrations, from 10 until 3:00.

This painting has been accepted into the Pittock Mansion
Exhibit: "Let Us Speak Our Minds". It honors the
100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote,
in Oregon, in 1912.
The exhibit runs July 14 - November 11.
Hours: 10 - 5 (summer hours).
The above painting is the "After" version of this
painting. Below is the "Before" version, you might
remember from a post in May.
I designed a stronger dark shape, with more color,
in the "After" version, above.

It has been awhile since I have visited the Pittock
Mansion and my visit reminded me that it is one of our
Portland treasures. Summer gardens and spectacular
views surround this grand mansion. Definitely worth
a visit. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn, as many folks do
