Expanding my painting vocabulary by
spraying fluid acrylics on yupo provided a new
path to explore! My experiences with yupo in the
past have been labor intensive and the results did
not provide this type of result.
This technique held my interest and enthusiasm.
Once the paint is sprayed on, the shapes continue
to change, even as sections of the painting dry.

My inspiration for spraying the paint came from
Mary Ann Beckwith, our most recent
Watercolor Society of Oregon juror.
Thank you, Mary Ann!
For more great ideas, visit her website:
www.maryannbeckwith.com
This painting is further exploration of using a "chair" design
as a start for a composition.
My initial step for these "chair" paintings is to start with
a splattered texture. Then the chair is painted to reveal
the intitial splatters.
The best part was adding this dog to create
a story, that could be interpreted by the viewer.

1237 SW 10th Ave at Jefferson
503 224 0674
The reception is a popular event and I enjoy
arriving at 5:00pm to see new artist's work, before the
crowds arrive.
I will be wearing an "artist name tag", so please introduce
yourself!

Title: Winter's Dream of Spring

Artist: Linda Rothchild Ollis

Medium: Mixed Media

Size: 20 x 20 inches

This is another "process" painting, where I let the process
and exciting experimental textures lead the way.
As I was painting, I was ready to see some sign of Spring
and then the flower shapes appeared.

Exploring "Chairs in Squares" has been the jumping off
point for my Monday morning class at The Village Gallery.

I will also offer a two day workshop following this theme
at The Sequoia Gallery and Studios on two Saturdays,
March 16th and 23rd.
A special evening demo featuring techniques
taught at this workshop will be Thursday eve.,
February 28th 7-8:30 pm.

This painting is my acrylic adaptation of a technique that
Kathleen Conover teaches as a watercolor technique
in her workshop. Her "gesso juice"
formula is in Watercolor Artist Magazine, Feb. 2012
Kathleen Conover Feature, Meredith E. Lewis, (FW Publications).
http://www.northlightshop.com/watercolor-artist-february-2012-digital-download-w2240
Check your local library, if you don't want to pay the download fee.
In addition to Kathleen's article,
this issue includes work by top artists in "The Years Best Paintings".

Kathleen's YouTube video "Chaos to Order"
is worth viewing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLSYo2kEy24
Her teaching style, is organized with well thought out lessons.
She has a gift for guiding you as an artist, in a positive, helpful way that
encourages each student to succeed, with regard to all
levels of experience.
Thank you Kathleen for a great learning experience!
Kathleen Conover shared her amazing knowledge
about composition, value and design to those of us
in her workshop at Menucha Retreat and Conference Center,
Nov. 12 - 15th.
This painting was done in the evenings after class. One
of my personal art goals for this week was to layer acrylic
paint on yupo and it provided exciting new possibilities for
textures.
In the next post I will share a painting that reflects what Kathleen taught.

I just returned from visiting Marla Baggetta's new studio
and workshop space, called Southeast Atelier.
She paints and teaches pastels, acrylics and oils.
On her blog: http://marlabaggetta.blogspot.com/
you can read more about the classes and workshops
she offers, as well as other artists (Judy Wise, Jackie Hurlbert)
who will offer classes at Southeast Atelier.
I recommend that you navigate to her website and view her portfolio.

Schedules of workshops and classes can also be found
at: www.seatelier.com.

Thank you Marla for an inspirational demo and your
generous sharing of your extensive knowledge!

Donna Zagotta impressed me, years ago, when she
said, think of a painting that you like, as "The Mother
Painting". New ideas can be born from the parts of the
painting that you like. I like this composition and created it
from the demo painting used in the last post, by cropping
and removing one seagull.
Here is how this part of the painting looked before
I removed the seagull:

I used the Clone Stamp Tool to sample surrounding
sand and place it on the seagull, until it was "erased".

The artists in my October class, at The Village Gallery,
suggested that this demo painting needed something
in the distance.
The foggy feel of the graded wash wasn't enough.

We were studying graded washes, reflections in the sand,
applying white on a graded wash and creating a horizontal
band compostion.
Before I added the distant waves in the above image,
using Photoshop Elements,
the painting looked like this:

Thank you, Bobbie Willard, Michelle Winter, Leslie Williamson,
Annette Van Dyke and Cyndie Christiansen for your
great suggestion.
If you like the way your suggestion looks, I hope you will add
it to your paintings!
For those of you interested in the Photoshop Elements Tools:
First I sampled the gray blue on the bottom
of the painting with the Eye Dropper Tool.
With that gray blue in the Foreground Color Box,
I used the Gradient Tool > Reflected Gradient and pulled
a short line and then a longer line to create the two lines
in the distance.
Changing the Foreground Color Box to white, I used the
Brush Tool set on transparent settings of 30% and less to
play with the foam of the waves.

Powerful ocean waves, splashing against rocks
were painted by the above artists in my Monday
morning acrylic painting class at The Village
Gallery of Arts.
We studied the parts and structure of waves, as well
as how to create more dynamic compositions by
contrasting straight lines with curved lines.
Thank you to all, including Betty (not pictured above),

Title: Sauvie Island Cyclist

Size: 12 x 12 inch
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Artist: Linda Rothchild Ollis

Inspired by Marc Bohne (pronounced Bonnie),
Russell Chatham, and Ramona Youngquist,

master painters of landscapes, I have been studying
trees. Sauvie Island is not far from where I live and
when I am there taking in the serenity of the
amazing, rural landscape, I repeat over and over,
"I love my job, I love being an artist".

Just returned from Gearhart, Oregon (on the Oregon Coast
just north of Seaside). Here are the artists who
shared the fun of exploring experimental watermedia,
texture and design. It was a privelege to instruct this fearless
group of artists and a pleasure to paint with them. Thank you
to Ellen Zimet, who organizes the "Summer Art in Gearhart"
program and to everyone for a memorable three days!

St. Helens, Oregon has a lovely marina. It is one of my
favorite areas to walk and gather new inspiration for paintings.
I worked on simplifying the scene and emphasizing
the sailor in the white shirt.

It has been great sharing new texture ideas with this fearless group of artists!
We will continue refining our use of textures in the next class that meets
August 6, 13, & 27, Monday mornings, 9:30 am to noon.,
Title: Sand Flow 1
Medium: * Mixed (see below) on cradled board
Size: 12" x 12"
Artist: Linda Rothchild Ollis
$ 650

The center of this painting started as a demo in my Monday
morning class at The Village Gallery of Arts.
We are exploring textures and this is an example of how
to combine sand, gesso and acrylic paints.
The area that surrounds the center was done with acrylic,
molding paste and burnished with black gesso.

This painting will be at R.Blooms, 267 A Avenue, Lake Oswego
this Saturday, July 21st.
I will be showing and selling my work there,
as well as doing painting demonstrations, from 10 until 3:00.
Stop by and say hi!

by Linda Rothchild Ollis

This painting has been accepted into the Pittock Mansion
Exhibit: "Let Us Speak Our Minds". It honors the
100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote,
in Oregon, in 1912.
The exhibit runs July 14 - November 11.
Hours: 10 - 5 (summer hours).
The above painting is the "After" version of this
painting. Below is the "Before" version, you might
remember from a post in May.
I designed a stronger dark shape, with more color,
in the "After" version, above.

It has been awhile since I have visited the Pittock
Mansion and my visit reminded me that it is one of our
Portland treasures. Summer gardens and spectacular
views surround this grand mansion. Definitely worth
a visit. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn, as many folks do
in this warmer weather. For more info:
"Let Us Speak Our Minds: Contemporary Art Views
on Women's Right to Vote in Oregon" at Pittock Mansion,
