I try a lot of plugins, and some of theme just never get updated to a fully mature version. One plugin I’ve had a few years has been through multiple revisions that’s one of my favorites is the WP Testimonials Plugin.

It does the job well, for exactly what you would expect. You enter the testimonials, and then you can display them in a full “testimonials” page, or a sidebar widget (click image for full size view):

here’s the screen where you enter testimonials in your wordpress dashboard admin:

The screen is setup for client name, company, web site, short and long description, image, and sort order. The funny thing about it is, you might think because of the labels, that all you could use this plugin for would be is testimonials on a business web site.

Guess what, you don’t have to use all the fields! And you can put whatever you want in them. Use this plugin just as easily for random quotes, featured products, affiliate links, etc.

If you’ve had a web site for any length of time, you probably already know what an XML sitemap is, and if you want to get indexed in all the 3 big search engines (as soon as you post) – you know you need to register that sitemap with them in “webmaster” control panels at each search engine.

This means that for each (Yahoo, bing, google) you have to go through a “verification process”, to ensure you are the actual owner. That means you either have to edit your theme and add some meta tag code, or upload an HTML file for each search engine. What a PITA if you ask me.

I’ve recommended the Robots Meta plugin for a long time, where you can administer your htaccess files, robots.txt, and also your search engine registrations – all in one plugin.

If you don’t need all those features, just use the All in One Webmaster plugin to manage all 3 search engine registrations.

There are so many Wordpress “related posts” plugins – it’s hard to figure out which one may be best for you. Some work better than others, some have different algorithms, and I’ve had one or two myself that conflicted with other installed plugins, so I had to remove it and move to a better alternative.

The related post plugin I’ve used the longest, and that seems to have the least amount of overhead, never breaks, and has nearly no conflicts at all is Aizatto’s Related Posts.

The Yet Another Related Posts plugin is also highly rated, and has been downloaded thousands of times.

Sometimes you don’t want just related posts, you might want to also look at the Wordpress Popular Posts Plugin.

Custom Post Relationships Plugin
This plugin is nice because you can actually choose which related posts are displayed. If you need this kind of functionality it works great, but it doesn’t display related posts automatically (you have to manually add the code to your theme), and you have to manually choose the posts.

Recently I had a blog where I had to mass publish a lot of pending posts and drafts all at once (hundreds), and the thought of cycling through them one by one was really annoying to me. I spent a few minutes searching and searching for just the right plugin, and while there were many for mass deletion and mass category moves (which I’ve written about previously), there were non for mass publishing posts that are drafts.

Leave it to my old friend the Wordpress Codex to help me out in my time of need! I found that the place I should have been looking all along was my very own Wordpress dashboard!

Check it out:

I you click all 10 posts at once and then “edit” you get th hidden menu in the image above. If you can’t see it all, click it for full view. Then, you can do whatever you want to all 10 posts at once!

Nifty!

It’s pretty easy to create wordpress blog posts using nothing but email. With the amount of people using Facebook, Twitter, and mobile “smart phones” to update their profiles – why not update your blog via your phone too? The ability the create a blog post via an email has been around quite awhile, but I think it took until this year to be really useful. I’ve had a blackberry now for about a year and a half, but before that my phone was a flip phone, and sending texts to people was tedious at best. Now most modern smartphones have a full sized keyboard, and it’s easy to send texts, that’s why twitter and facebook updates are popular on mobile phones. Blackberry’s can send and receive emails, most smartphones (iphone, HTC touch) can now as well. If you’re out and about and waiting on the kids at the mall, or the wife in the grocery store – you should take advantage of this wordpress feature.

It’s easier than you think, in your Wordpress dashboard just go to “Settings->Writing” and scroll to the bottom.

It’ll look like this:

You’ve probably seen that 100 times before and either didn’t think it was useful, or didn’t know how to set it up. Basically, what you need to do is setup an email account just to use for posting to your wordpress site. Most web hosting accounts let you setup quite a few emails, and you need to create one that nobody will ever see or use but you. In other words, instead of setting the traditional “bob@mycoolsite.com”, setup something like “LKBHJTD@mycoolsite.com”. The reason for the strange name is that anyone that has this email address will be able to post to your site, but you’re not going to give it out to anybody – so that won’t matter.

Once you’ve setup the email account, get the setup instructions from your web host and find out the mail server and port number. Then enter those, along with your new username and password in the appropriate fields, and save to update. The only other option you have is “wordpress category”, and I advise you maybe setup something like “mobile news”, or assign a similar existing category.

Now the funny thing about Wordpress is that, in the dashboard – other than the fields in the image above, no instructions exist on how to use this mysterious “blog posts via email” feature in Wordpress. NONE at all. Of course, this information does exist in the wordpress codex, and it says that you have to setup some kind of “trigger”. Basically – you gave wordpress login details to “check for email” just like an email program would. Once it gets the lastest email (to create posts with), it’s even smart enough to delete the messages (like an email program does). But, it’s not setup to automatically “check email” at regular intervals.

The file that “checks mail” is yoursite.com/wp-mail.php. That’s right – it’s existed all this time in your root directory as a core function of wordpress – and you probably didn’t even know what it did. You have a few choices on how to “check mail” with this file. You could setup a cron job to run it at your own specified intervals. You could manually bring up the file in a browser and call it that way to check mail. But if you’re on a cell phone – that’s just a pain.

A much better way (in my opinion) is to just place this code in your footer.php:

<iframe src=”http://yourblogdomain/wordpressinstalldir/wp-mail.php” name=”mailiframe” width=”0″ height=”0″ frameborder=”0″ scrolling=”no” title=”"></iframe>

Now, every time a page loads on your site – Wordpress checks for mail. That’s pretty much it, you just have to remember that you can’t use pictures and the posts will be just text. You can always go back at a later date and add images, tags, or whatever. If you still need more information, consult the official Post to your blog using email page in the Wordpress codex.

The need to bulk delete or bulk posts and pages in Wordpress is quite common. Wordpress will only allow you to see 10 posts at a time, so the most you can delete at once is 10. If you have to delete 600 posts, or even 100 drafts, it can be very time consuming.

This is a pretty easy solution to solve, just use the “bulk delete” Wordpress plugin.

Here’s a screenshot:

Just select what you want to delete, and whether you want it to go to “trash” or be permanently deleted. You can also delete by category or by tags.

Another worthy mention by the same plugin developer is Bulk Move. Easily move bunches of posts from one category to another with ease.

The only thing is – you have login to feedburner to get your stats all the time. Who wants to do that? I found a neat plugin last month that adds an entry under “dashboard” when you login – and this plugin displays Feedburner stats right in your wordpress dashboard! You can see how many RSS subscribers you had day by day, and also how many clicks you received back to your site. I can’t believe I never knew about this plugin before.

I was looking for a Wordpress Opt-In plugin today, and despite the fact that there are a lot of solutions – there sure aren’t a lot of good ones (lol). If you have a Wordpress blog or web site, chances are at one time or antother you’ll need to have a plugin that will handle an opt-in form to collect email addresses for a newsletter or mailing list. There’s nothing better than having a targeted audience for your market or niche.

if you’re looking for an opt-in plugin, here are some features you should consider:

control of email templates

editing ability for signup and confirmation pages

export and import of the list of email contacts

ability to put the signup form where you want (sidebar, page, post)

ability to manage more than one list

interface with email marketing services, such as Aweber, MailChip, etc.

ability to tie confirmation to something, like a free download, video, ebook, etc

double opt-in confirmation of email signups

I have to say – I’m not completely happy with what I found, but I did find a great free plugin: G-Lock Double Opt-In Manager

It has most of the features. You can import, export, control the email, signup, and confirmation pages. And in the welcome email you can add a link to a download, but that’s of course only good for managing a single free thing. The good news is – you can export the email contacts, so if and when I find a better solution – I can export the emails to the new plugin.

What do you use for a Wordpress Opt-In plugin?

If you read and comment on blogs regularly – then you already know the difference between dofollow and nofollow. Also, you probably seek out dofollow blogs to comment on (like this one) because you know that the link juice is better. What you may not know is how to make your own blog “dofollow”. All you have to do is download and install the “dofollow plugin” from Semiologic – and the rest is taken care of for you! Automatically the “nofollow” attribute is removed from your blog comments, and people will want to be commenting on your blog in no time!

This is a list of my essential Wordpress layout plugins. The plugins I use from site to site varies, but these 4 plugins seem to be there each and every time. They all serve a purpose and function that Wordpress doesn’t (yet) provide – that I believe to be either necessary or required on every site I build or work on.

Privacy Page: Why do you need a privacy page? Adsense, and nearly every affiliate program out there requires that your have one to promote their products.

Breadcrumb NavXT: I’ve been creating and maintaining web sites for 15 years, and I still don’t understand why Wordpress and most modern CMS system don’t have better navigation. If google isn’t a clue, EVERY SINGLE PAGE on your web site should have what we call “breadcrumbs” at the top. It gives visitors a way “home” at all times and it shows where they are in your site (if you have multiple levels or sub-pages). Users expect that. The biggest sites have it – why shouldn’t you? There is NOTHING wrong with having redundant navigation in your header, sidebars, footer, and breadcrumbs – so long as it doesn’t clutter your site and make it more confusing.

WP PageNavi: The last thing your blog needs is to have those nasty “previous” and “next” post links on your homepage and single post pages. Lester Chan’s WP PageNavi plugin adds a bottom page navigation more like google’s. This doesn’t work automatically – you have to edit your wordpress home or index.php and single.php theme files on your own.

Subscribe to Comments: If you haven’t already, install and activate the “Subscribe to Comments” plugin. When I comment on a site if I can’t “subscribe” to any replies to my comment, I just get really annoyed.

If you liked those plugins, here’s some closely related post I wrote about Wordpress layout that are very popular:
