Loyalty is worth its weight in gold

Philip D. Armour said this, “There is one element that is worth its weight in gold and that is loyalty. It will cover a multitude of weaknesses.”

What I took from this is with humans – with each other – when your friends are loyal you forgive them much – when your lover is loyal – it’s wonderful and can make even not the ideal more wonderful – knowing that another is loyal to you is a gift – and we can get that gift best by showing loyalty to others.

Malcolm Forbes said this which also goes with Loyalty, “to measure the man, measure his heart.” I like that – and it is measurable and those with the best people skills have a mighty heart for others.

Who knew the topic of cell phone etiquette would get so much response? I guess I figured it would, but it was eye-opening just the same.

When the NBC affiliate here in Portland asked me to be the etiquette expert on a piece on cell phone rudeness – what to say etc. it was a tad bit surprising when someone wrote in with the comment: “Besides horse-whipping them…” Okay – so passions run high on rude!

Because of some technical errors not everyone who wanted to was able to comment on how to deal with rude people – so I’m giving you the opportunity now! AND I’m making it a contest!

Scenario: When someone is on two separate phones talking to two different people at the same time.

Traveling on paths that have heart

Maurice R. Franks said this, “Loyalty cannot be blueprinted. It cannot be produced on an assembly line. In fact, it cannot be manufactured at all, for its origin is the human heart – the center of self-respect and human dignity. It is a force which leaps into being only when conditions are exactly right for it – and it is a force very sensitive to betrayal.”

When I was a young girl and making first friends, it was vital that my friend would keep my confidences – those fears I shared in secret – and when another betrayed my faith, it was such a painful act of disloyalty; however, it was the training ground of the character we build from being betrayed, even in our own minds and from not being betrayed, which is the most glorious feeling – this is how we decipher our friends.

The first quote inspires me to add another around the heart – I found beautiful things there and have not included any quotes on the heart so far – Loyalty week is a good time!

This small section from The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge, by Carlos Castaneda says it for me:

Choose your path with care. Follow only those you feel strongly to follow. If you feel the path is not right for you, you must not stay with it under any conditions. Look at every path closely and deliberately. A very old man told me about something important once. He was my benefactor and he talked with me when I was young… when my blood was too vigorous for me to understand it. Now I do understand. It is very important, and I will tell you what it is. Is it this:

“Does this path have a heart?”

My benefactor’s question has meaning now. “Does this path have a heart?” if it does, the path is good: if it doesn’t, it is of no use. When you are choosing a path, check it carefully to see if it has a heart. If it does, it makes for a joyful journey. As long as you follow it, you are one with it. The path without a heart will make you curse your life. One makes you strong… the other weakens you…

For me, there is only traveling on the paths that have heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length. And there I travel, looking… looking… breathlessly…

What does loyalty mean to you?

This week we focus on loyalty – an interesting word and I find a different meaning to many. There is loyalty to one’s country – that came up several times in the quotes I read and loyalty to each other. My call to you is to think about what loyalty means to you.

Because of all the political upheaval I thought this quote from John A. Hannah was interesting, “No citizen of this nation is worthy of the name unless he bears unswerving loyalty to the system under which he lives, the system that gives him more benefits than any other system yet devised by man. Loyalty leaves room to change the system when need be, but only under the ground rules by which we Americans live.”

Your Mind Matters

A.J. Nock said our last quote of the week, “The mind is like the stomach. It is not how much you put into it that counts, but how much you digest.”

Joke of the week:

A farmer received a visit from a government official over allegations that he was paying his staff less than the minimum wage. The official asked him for a list of his employees and details of their pay.

“All right,” said the farmer. “I have a hired man, been with me for three years. I pay him six hundred a week, plus room and board. There’s a cook – she’s been here six months. She gets five hundred a week, plus room and board.”

“Anybody else?” asked the official as he scribbled on a pad.’

“Yea,” said the farmer. “There’s one guy here is none too bright. He works about eighteen hours a day. I pay him ten dollars a week and a bit of beer money.”

“Aha!” roared the official. “That’s the man I want to talk to!”

Peace of Mind

Eric B. Gutkind once said, “People are afraid to think, or they don’t know how. They fail to realize that, while emotions can’t be suppressed, the mind can be strengthened. All over the world people are seeking peace of mind, but there can be no peace of mind without strength of mind.”

I loved that – since I seek peace of mind – a peace that passeth all understanding. Well, now I have the call to strengthen my mind and it may be easier to gain that peace.

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen said “The mind is like a clock that is constantly running down and must be wound up daily with good thoughts.”

Think about this old quote. We no longer have clocks that must be wound – all of my clocks are digital. I even have world clocks that pick up the time from wireless and never need to be reset if the power goes out – so it’s now mindless. Is that what can happen to our mind – we have too many things done for us?

Change Your Mind

Today’s quote comes from James Lane Allen who said this about the mind, “ A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seed will fall therein and will continue to produce its kind.”

What I loved about this quote is that we are all cultivating our gardens – we are gaining new thoughts simply by listening and thinking about the great thoughts of others. How great is that?

Lastly a quote not attributed to anyone, however great advice nonetheless: “It is well for people who think to change their minds occasionally in order to keep them clean.” Sort of like underwear I figure!

Expand Your Mind

This weeks theme is The Mind, a gift we all have, each person, every one – and the quotes about the mind were mind-boggling! This is a fascinating topic to me since I was not raised to use my mind in the best ways. I only remember my dad saying, “Use your head Shawna!” usually when I had done something stupid, however there was never really a call to think and so I seek it now. I realize that how I use my mind – how I think is everything – so it’s a great focus for a new month.

Today’s quote comes from George Matthew Adams who said, “One reason why men and women lose their heads so often is that they use them so little! It is the same with everything. If we have anything that is valuable, it must be put to some sort of use. If a man’s muscles are neglected, he soon has none, or rather none worth mentioning. The more the mind is used the more flexible it becomes, and the more it takes upon itself new interests.”

So my call to us this week is to use this valuable gift we are all given and to expand our mind!

Music to the world…

Henry Ward Beecher gave us today’s quote: “Of all earthly music, that which reaches farthest into heaven is the beating of a truly loving heart.”

This touched me – of all earthly music – wow – the sounds of a loving heart – how are they manifested in us – with joyful tones, with laughter or kind words – are we speaking/playing/providing loving music to the world?

Something about children and love for you today – so many lessons come from little ones and this story about Howard Maxwell of Los Angeles is classic – Howard was an innovator – So when his four-year-old daughter Melinda acquired a fixation for “The Three Little Pigs” and demanded that he read it to her night after night, Maxwell, very pleased with himself, tape-recorded the story. When Melinda next asked for it, he simply switched on the recorder. This worked for a couple of nights, but then one evening Melinda pushed the storybook at her father.

“Now, honey,” he said, “you know how to turn on the recorder.”

“Yes,” said Melinda, “but I can’t sit on its lap.”

This is a great lesson for all of us – it’s not about the story – it’s about the touch, the doing, the being together – so today when someone wants something from you – especially a child or a spouse – ask yourself this: “Is it about the story really?” because if you think about it – it’s more likely about the love.
