Subject: dog urine reference?

Hi there,

I have been asked for a reference regarding the effect of dog urine and feces on St. Augustine. It seems like there used to be a line or two about it somewhere but I have not been able to find it. This professional has a customer with a 500- 600 sq ft piece of St. Augustine which is also in shade- professional says it’s 100% shade. The customer has three dogs which are using this area for their “deposits” and the grass has had to be replaced several times and the professional feels the dog urine and feces are damaging the turf.

Do we have a reference to this type of damage anywhere?

Obviously the heavy shade is not good- but he is looking for info on the urine and feces because he sees small areas that look like they are from animal excrement.

Thanks for your help!

Mary Beth,

I should get with one of my vet friends and write a fact sheet on this. In the meantime, here is a pretty good article from a vet specialist at TAMU on the issue – probably the best one I have found in searching:

http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/turf/dog_lawn_problems.html

The problem is basically nitrogen burn and the best remedy is most likely a garden hose when possible! You will see a lot of stuff advertised about altering pH (both dog and soil), but those are really not effective as the author of this article points out. Most of our lawn grasses are fairly susceptible to this if peed on in any quantity.

Hope this is helpful.
