Clay Aiken talks about new album
Former "American Idol" finalist Clay Aiken talks about his new album and upcoming performance in Raleigh.

Dressed in a blue button down shirt and blue jeans, Clay Aiken sat down for an interview with NBC17 Thursday at the Progress Energy Center.

Aiken announced in February that he will perform a one-night only special event to help kick off the release of his new album "Tried and True" and that this concert will be taped which will air sometime in June on PBS.

Within minutes of tickets going on sale, they sold-out. Many of those tickets were bought by some of Aiken's most loyal fans who said they will travel across the country to see him perform. Something he hasn't done in quite some time.

"It's always a surprise when folks are willing to put so much effort forth," said Aiken.

He was just as much surprised as he was flattered that his fans will travel to see him and is always appreciative for their support.

Among his fans in attendance, Clay said some family and some of his biggest supporters will also be in attendance.

"Quite a few of my teachers are gonna be here, too," he said excitedly.

Aiken said the album and concert are a product of months of preparation and hopes his fans will have a good time. His concert will take place Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

In two hours I will be leaving the house to start my travels to Raleigh for the Clay Aiken concert on Friday night. The red-eye from California will be long, but it is worth every minute !!

I have been to Raleigh many times. However, every time I think of Raleigh, the first memory is Clay’s exciting return and performance on the American Idol Tour. I know we have all seen it, but it just seemed appropriate for today.

I will post as much news as I can from Raleigh. I will try and post about fans, the buzz and write a first-hand report of the concert. I hope you will join us here for all the fun!

Clay Aiken Releases More Tickets To Sold-Out Show
Clay Aiken fans, if you thought you were out of luck when tickets to his one-night only show sold-out, think again. A limited number of tickets will be released starting at Noon Tuesday, March 9.

Aiken originally sold out the show at the Memorial Auditorium within minutes after being on-sale to the public.

According to a press release, due to popular demand, Aiken and his production team “worked to reconfigure the stage set-up in order to release a limited number of seats that were being held for TV production”.

“I sincerely thank my fans for their support. Selling out the Memorial Auditorium in minutes is so mind blowing to me, and now luckily I can get some more fans into the audience with these extra tickets” said the singer. “I can’t wait to share the new music with everyone and I promise to make it a one of a kind, extra special show.”

Tickets will be available on Ticketmaster.com at Noon (EST) on Tuesday, March 9.

I am in the middle of a power outage. Three hours ago, the power went out in our area and over 5000 homes are dark. My laptop has about 5 minutes more of power. PG and E is hunting for the problem.

So…..since I have only a few minutes left on my laptop, I thought I would just post one of my favorite videos. I hope its one of your favorites too.

Maybe we will get some news tomorrow and hopefully, I will have power back tomorrow to report on the news!!

It is only March 8th, but if you are a Clay Aiken fan, most of your thoughts are on the upcoming summer and the possibility of a Clay Aiken Tour- Stop close to your home. Since the announcement of the first concert in Asheville, North Carolina, fans have been buzzing about all the summer fun.

When Clay has toured during the summer months in past years, he has enjoyed some daytime activity by riding some of the carnival rides at the fairs that he visits. Do you think he will do that again this summer??

The following are a few pictures from some of the fun Clay and his friends have had at the fairs.

Remember, you can click on the pictures and see them larger. It’s worth it to see the looks on some of the faces (especially Angela’s).

Clay Aiken – An Oscar in His Future?

Tonight, millions of people will be celebrating the biggest movie event of the year…The Academy Awards.

As a Clay Aiken fan, I wish that Clay was going to be there, singing one of the nominated songs. I do believe that within the next few years, that wish will come true. No one can sing a song better than Clay Aiken. I hope that Clay goes home with one of those beautiful statues within the next few years.

Speaking of the golden statuette, his given name is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science Award of Merit, but most people know him by his nickname, “Oscar”. Legend has it that the Academy film librarian, Margaret Herrick, commented back in 1928 that the gold statuette looked just like her Uncle Oscar. The statue’s catchy nickname has prevailed, and almost everyone uses that name.

The statues were first awarded in 1929. Since that time, 2,701 Oscars have gone home with actors, directors, writers, producers, and the technical personnel that have made their mark on the world of film. First time winners often comment when first handed their statue how heavy it is. It is eight and a half pounds of solid metal and makes for a handful. The statues are just over a foot tall, and are currently molded from an alloy called Britannia metal, which is made of tin, copper, and antimony. Britannium is also used in the manufacture of kitchen cutlery and trophies, such as the Americas Cup.

Over the base material, Oscar is plated first with copper, then nickel silver, and finally, twenty-four carat gold. The first Oscars used bronze, but the material was quickly abandoned for the lighter and cheaper tin alloy. During World War II, when metals were in short supply for the war effort, winners received a plaster statue. Once the war was over, these were exchanged for the real thing.

Oscar has not changed his look since 1945. The standing male figure holds a downward pointing sword in front of him, to signify a knight. He stands on a base which is a reel of film. The current figure was sculpted by Los Angeles artist George Stanley. R.S. Owens & Company in Chicago has manufactured Oscars since 1982.

According to a Bloomberg News report, it costs about five hundred dollars to make an Oscar statuette.

Since 1950, the statuettes have been legally encumbered by the requirement that neither winners nor their heirs may sell the statuettes without first offering to sell them back to the Academy for US$1. If a winner refuses to agree to this stipulation, then the Academy keeps the statuette. Academy Awards not protected by this agreement have been sold in public auctions and private deals for six-figure sums.

The highest price paid for an Oscar at auction was the $1.54 million dollar winning bid by the late Michael Jackson for David O. Selznick’s Best Picture Award. Selznick originally won the award in 1939 for producing Gone With The Wind.

What are you doing on August 6^,2010? Well, I would bet that some of you will be in Chautauqua, New York, attending a concert by Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard. During the 2007 Summer Tour, Clay Aiken gave a concert in Chautauqua. Those in attendance enjoyed it very much.

Chautauqua is located in the southwestern most corner of New York State. The area is known as a vacation center for families. The region is known for its natural beauty which is blended with a large variety of unique cultural attractions.

Clay and Ruben will be performing at the famous Chautauqua Institute. The Chautauqua Institution is a not-for-profit, 750-acre educational center beside Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State, where approximately 7,500 persons are in residence on any day during a nine-week season, and a total of over 142,000 attend scheduled public events. Over 8,000 students enroll annually in the Chautauqua Summer Schools which offer courses in art, music, dance, theater, writing skills and a wide variety of special interests.

The Institution was originally called the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly. It was founded in 1874 as an educational experiment in out-of-school, vacation learning. It was successful and broadened almost immediately beyond courses for Sunday school teachers to include academic subjects, music, art and physical education.

Music is an important aspect of Chautauqua. The Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1929, now performs three times a week with leading soloists in the 5,000-seat Amphitheater, Chautauqua’s program center. Popular entertainers perform other evenings. The Chautauqua Ballet Company also appears in the Amphitheater, sometimes with guest artists, while the Chautauqua Conservatory Theater presents its season in Bratton Theater. The Chautauqua Opera Company, also founded in 1929, performs in English in Norton Hall.

Jamestown is about 15 miles south of Chautauqua. The visitors guide to Jamestown says:

Once known as “The Furniture Capital of the World,” industry has long since deserted Jamestown, a sleepy town on the tip of beautiful Chautauqua Lake, a popular fishing and sailing destination. The town is the home of the Lucy-Desi Museum and Desilu Playhouse, both built in honor of the town’s most famous daughter. Jamestown also contains The Audubon Center, which features a 600 acre nature sanctuary with five miles of observation and hiking paths and is the home of Liberty, a local bald eagle.

If you visit this unique area of New York, you might follow the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail. The Wine Trail is about 40 miles long and runs amidst 30,000 acres of vineyards along Lake Erie in western New York and Pennsylvania in “America’s Grape Country”.

This little corner of New York sounds like a perfect place to attend a concert and perhaps a good place to spend a few days to enjoy the area.

Are you watching American Idol this season? I admit I haven’t seen the show for a few years, but it is still a popular show with many people. On March 4^th and 5^th, 2003, Clay Aiken performed on the Wildcard Show for Season2 of American Idol. For those who are fans of Clay, it brings back many exciting memories.

Simon kept saying it was going to be the best show of all. This was a time when the “best of the rest” would be given another chance to showcase their voice and style.

Many people felt that the Wildcard show was the beginning of the real competition. This show featured some average singers, some good singers and one outstanding singer.

American Idol had been pushing for days that there was an unbelievable “twist” that would be announced on the Wildcard show. When the time came for the announcement, Ryan asked Simon to explain. The news that there would be a top 12 instead of a top 10 was not really that exciting, but it was different from Season 1. Simon went on to explain that each judge would choose one contestant to go on and the American public would choose the fourth.

First up on the program was Kimberly Caldwell who sang I Feel The Earth Move. All three judges were unimpressed with the performance and Kimberly looked crushed by the judge’s comments.

Next up…. Clay Aiken. Singing Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Clay seemed to have effortless power and he gave the impression that he had been doing this for a long time. From the beginning, he started working the camera and because he was really into the song, his face was very expressive.

It was fun to see the judges excited about Clay’s performance. Paula gushed and Clay blushed!! Randy and Paula gave him a standing ovation and even Simon was impressed.

Singing Wind Beneath My Wings, Nasheka Siddall was very nervous and it really showed in her lackluster performance which got mixed reviews form the judges.

The next young lady was a mystery. Where did she come from?? Carmen Rasmussen was an adorable young girl who had a lot of determination. Singing Don’t Blame the Moonlight, her voice had a unique quality and some were put off by her obvious vibrato. Paula was vague and suggested she work on her showmanship and Randy told her to keep trying. “We brought people back to give them a chance to shine and you didn’t,” said Simon. Most of the viewers thought Carmen didn’t have a chance.

Olivia Mojica sang Because You Loved Me. Her voice was pleasant, but because of poor breath control, it was very weak.

We Belong was the song choice by Janine Falsone. This song needed to be sung with power and passion and Janine showed neither of these in her performance.

Chip Days sang Rock With You. Randy and Paula liked it, but Simon thought it was terrible and in one of his famous rants, pointed out his dissatisfaction with the entire group.

Arms of An Angel was the song choice for Aliceyn Cooney. She has a lovely voice, but the over-used song was a bad choice.

The last performer of the night was Trenyce. Singing Let’s Stay Together, she did a great job. She had a great deal of style and her strong voice moved her ahead of most of the other contestants. Paula and Randy loved her performance but Simon was not blown away.

Each performer had family and friends there to support them. Clay has his two friends, Nick and Kristy there to encourage him. It is nice to know that they are still a part of Clay’s support team.

At the end of the show, Ryan encouraged the viewing audience to vote, vote, vote. Did you follow Ryan’s advice and vote? Who knew at that time that America had found a new star. Thank you, American Idol for introducing us to Clay Aiken.

The following evening, four of the contestants were chosen to join the Top 12.

Randy Jackson chose Kimberly Caldwell even through he said he was still waiting for her to perform up to her potential. Kim is a beautiful young woman and it has been suggested that she was chosen for her image as much as her voice.

Paula chose Trenyce. Few people were surprised as she sang well and was dynamic in her presentation.

Simon talked about a unique voice and surprised the audience by naming Carmen Rasmussen as his pick. Carmen looked shocked as Simon had told her the night before that she was not good enough to make it.

The last pick of the night was “America’s Choice.” The six remaining contestants sat together on the sofa and looked very nervous. Ryan slowly announced a….contestant….by….the….name….of….Clay Aiken. After hugging everyone and composing himself with a deep breath, Clay preceded to sing beautifully. Then he mouthed to the camera, “Thank you, thank you, thank you. Simon declared that his performance was the best one of the show and Randy said, “You so deserve it.”

The American public got it right. They gave Clay the opportunity to shine and he became the star we all love.

We have three videos of this night. The first is the announcement of “America’s Choice.” Second, is Clay’s performance from the night and the last is the entire Top 12.
