When I was young, I was fascinated by World War II.

Not the sensationalism of the Pacific Theater.

Not the strategy of The Allies.

Not the horrific tragedy of The Holocaust.

But the intense psychological HOW of the most notorious villain of the time.

I was raised Jewish by three Navy-made granddads, so there was much discussion of the rise of The Great Evil, obviously. But it wasn’t the pure horror of it, it was the very thing that drew me to Social Work as an adult.

Wolf seeks to tackle what may have happened between Hitler’s unlikely childhood, through his darker personal days, to the making of a monster.

Thrilling and horrifying, Wolf satisfies both my history buff side and my psych nerd side.

Review:

Man, oh, man. Y’all, this series is so intense. I had to reread the first two books before I took this one in and I’m glad I did. They really could be read in one, fiery gulp because the plot builds impressively as the story hurdles from one volume to the next.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read something that held my interest the same way Babu’s books do. Reminiscent of The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games, Insurrection caps off this three volume series Whit Ha world wide whirlwind that made this fiction-loving, former polisci Major very satisfied.

Ok, I thought I loved Ernshaw’s first book. I mean, I did.

But, oh, it completely pales in comparison to her sophomore story. I’ll be honest. I haven’t really jumped on the whole Witch bandwagon. But this entire thing drew me in.

Winterwood follows the last manifestation of a long line of powerful, magical women, culminating in a teenager whose powers have never really manifested. She lives alone, her mom constantly jetting around, leaving her to her own devices.

She’s a bit of an outcast at school but it doesn’t bother her much. She wanders the woods, living quietly and staying out of everyone’s way.

Then, one winter night, she finds a boy who has gone missing from the “correctional camp” across the lake. According to the news stories, he’s been missing for weeks but she drags him back to her cabin and nurses him back to health.

And so begins the magical run through a deep, dark woods. Woods that don’t particularly enjoy having boys or girls trespassing in their grounds.

Filled with mystery and beauty, chills and suspense, Winterwood is almost entirely impossible to capture in a recap without leaking spoilers.

Just trust me when I say this book is delightful and hauntingly gorgeous. Ernshaw nailed it, again, and then exceeded the bar.

My thoughts:

Phew! This was a wild ride. I adored the first book in the series. Split between two separate decades, two separate, yet intrinsically linked lives, two women race against time to track down their own goals. It’s fitting that I was reading this coming in to the “new 20’s”.

I often find stories like this tedious and hard to follow but Williams has a gorgeous storytelling voice, weaving in and out of two different timelines seamlessly.

Odden is back at her brilliant mysteries (beginning in A Dangerous Duet), diving into the underworld of Victorian suspense.

The subject of this round is a young painter, Annabel Rowe, is hard at work studying her craft at the Slade School of Fine Art. (Which, by the way,,if you have never seen the place, look it up because it’s gorgeous and my inner artist heart fell madly in love with the aesthetic.)

But it’s not all gorgeous interiors and sweet brushstrokes for our featured artist. Annabel is in for a shock when Inspector Matthew Hallam (of the famed Scotland Yard) shows up at her doorstep, carrying the weighty news that her brother has been brutally murdered.

Her late brother, Edwin, was an art lover in his own way but his craft was more along the lines of the sinister and frowned upon forgery field. He’s always been wrapped up in some dark scandal which leaves Annabel less than surprised by his untimely end.

Working in breadcrumbs alone (Annabel suspects that one his missing paintings points to his murderer), Annabel and Matthew race through dimly lit haunts and politically charged art houses, desperate to come up with answers that elude them at every turn.

A Trace of Deceit is the perfect thriller for any art fan but it also holds up for non-artists who simply want a gorgeous, fast paced mystery. I have newly committed myself to getting my behind over to Slade and, perhaps, drawing a bit more again. Though I’ll stay away from the art black market, thank you very much!

What a wild life!

Born to strict catholic parents who often threatened to throw their children into the nearby maximum security prison if they stepped out of line, Maureen grew up attempting to fit into a very straight and narrow mold.

That all began to crumble when her parents went through a divorce, forcing her once perfect (at least in image) mother to make drastic changes to her own moral code in order to keep up the life style she believed she and her children deserved.

Shoplifting, larceny, and other desperate measures sent the then imperiled family down a rather rocky road. Along that road, Maureen falls into a hole of angel dust and her own desperate measures.

At once intriguing and heartbreaking, this is one family’s story of reacting to life on life’s terms and while it makes for a very interesting read, it made my social worker heart break at points. I am so proud of Maureen for coming out on the other side of her childhood and living to tell the tale.

Somewhere between Breaking Bad and Blow, this story is definitely something I had an impossible time putting down. It’s written at a breakneck, post apocalyptic pace and has a sizzling energy.

Stanley Huang is a bit of an enigma. He is the self proclaimed patriarch of a small but intense little family with two kids, and as many marriages under his belt. He has long claimed that they will all be well rewarded at the end of his life but as that end approaches, his legacy begins to crumble. He is grappling with a recent cancer diagnosis and that eviction notice has sent his family network into a tailspin.

His son Fred has fallen on disappointing days. Nothing has turned out the way he imagined. He is the proverbial gifted kid for whom life has just not planned out. Harvard Business School didn’t exactly land him the life he had planned and he is not banking on his father’s rumored legacy to save him from himself.

Meanwhile, Fred’s sister Kate has it all. Or at least it looks that way. Working in roaringly successful Silicon Valley, multiple degrees and accolades, a perfect family, she seemingly has everything together. But we all know what that means. Nothing is ever as together as it looks from the outside.

Mary, Stanley’s devoted wife (almost three decades younger than he) is regretting her decision to get involved with a man so many years older than she is. As she navigates the road of caretaking a declining husband, their relationship hits bumps and snags she never saw coming.

Linda Liang, Stanley’s wife is the one person who knows him for who he truly is, though she walked away from his chaos years ago. She has spent many years proving her life back together to give her children the life she knows they deserve. But she is trying desperately to make herself a life that she finds fulfilling, a little difficult when she is getting on in years.

The entire family constellation swirls into chaos and contemplation as Stanley approaches his last days. Family Trust is both deep and hilarious on many levels, working in humor and intense family dynamics into one small volume. It was a great read for someone who navigates family functioning for work and for someone who has her own family to analyze.

By the day’s end, everyone connected with Kennedy’s demise has also gone belly up, sparking terror in Guidry’s heart. He is so freaked out, in fact, that he high tails it for Vegas, leaning on a man he hates in the interest of self preservation.

In an epic murder-turned-escape-turned-love story, November Road is at once historical fiction and action packed. There is adventure, suspense, and a whole lot of heart packed into these pages and, as a history geek, it totally caught me right in the feels.

Kennedy’s demise was my parents’ story but I grew up with the emotions still lingering. It was incredibly cool to read through one imagining of what could have gone down that day (and those after).
