1:00am update: Now that I’m back home and thought about everything that happened tonight, I’ve got to say that I’d give this year’s Emmy Awards telecast 2 stars out of 5.
Having multiple hosts slowed the show down big time and that caused everyone to get cut off too soon. For John Adams writer Kirk Ellis, that is literally what happened. The reality show hosts’ comedy bits were pretty flat. In fact, most of the humor from the night came from actual comedians. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien were some of the best parts of the night…as well as Don Rickles. God, he made me laugh tonight. It was nice to see him win an Emmy considering how many failed TV shows that man has had.
As a TV broadcast goes, it wasn’t great. Next year, I hope the Emmy people pick ONE comedian to lead the broadcast. It will be the best thing possible for the show. Just look at how well Conan O’Brien has hosted. BTW, looking back on it, for celebrating 60 years of Emmy Awards, I’d expect more montages, more reflections, more….well, just more. As “looking backs” go, this one was light, but then again, time was a factor.
Stupid 11pm out time. Personally, they could have just scrapped that whole Jimmy Kimmel special and just started the Emmys at 7pm. That would have been better. Oh well. It’s not like the biggest night of television should have the best show on air….right?
P.S. The more I think about it, the more I liked Josh Groban’s performance. I just wished a music band that does a range of styles had done a medley of songs which were a bunch of different styles. They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies spring to my mind as bands that would have been better for that montage.
As the awards go, I’d give the Emmy Award voters 4 stars out of 5. In fact, except for Jeremy Piven winning, I thought overall that the Emmy voters did a great job this year. They showed their love to the usual suspects. I think I went 11 for 15 on my Emmy picks; not bad. It was nice to see some of my predictions go wrong. Jeff Probst has been a good host on Survivor and I think we just take it for granted about his hosting because he’s done it for over 8 years now. I’m giving the Emmys credit for (rightfully) rewarding 30 Rock with lots and lots of Emmys. Giving The Colbert Show an award was great, ignoring SNL was smart, giving Mad Men only the Best Drama was smart and let’s not forget the biggest steps the Emmys took tonight…
The Emmys broke ranks and awarded Bryan Cranston an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama series. That was wonderful!!!!! I don’t think anyone out there expected Bryan to win, so the fact he won was the surprise of the night. Plus, the Emmys gave two acting awards to stars in the show Damages on FX. If FX isn’t a household name like TNT, TBS & USA, it will be soon…very soon. I almost wonder if FOX will try to bring that show over to their network for a trial run.
Overall, I’d like who got awarded, but didn’t like how I saw them being handed out. So in a way, I got what I wanted; the best in television to be awarded and recognized for their excellence. Too bad I had to sit through some bad television to see that.
11:15pm update: Well, need to do some cleanup before I write up my final thoughts. I’d like to thank my girlfriend and her family, the Lenaus, for letting me watch the Emmys in HD at their house tonight. Thank you very much.
10:56pm update: Best Drama: Mad Men; OK. Right now, Tony Tagliavia is jumping up and down with happiness right now!!! Wish it had been House or Dexter.
10:55pm update: Best Comedy Series: 30 Rock!!!! The Emmys have shown this show so much love tonight. Awesome!!! I wonder how low the ratings of that show can go before it gets cancelled by NBC?
10:50pm update: “Haven’t they been suffienct?” That’s the key term to use for these guys. Surprised that Jeff won. Jeff you’ve come a long way from Rock & Roll Jeopardy.
10:45pm update: Reality Host: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Funny Kimmel. You got me. I fell for it.
10:41pm update: Actress Comedy: TINA FEY!!!!!!!! Way to go!!!! What are you gonna do with all these Emmys? Nice to see you give Julia a thanks!
10:38pm update: Actor Drama: WOW!!!!!!! Talk about unexpected win!!! Way to go Brian!!! Way to go Emmy voters!!! Something different!!!
10:30pm update: I love the “In Memoriam” tribute. I will miss you Mr. Conductor; today, tomorrow, forever.
10:27pm update: OOPS!!! The mic didn’t work for Vanessa. Too bad. Actress Drama: Glenn Close. Good job to her. FX may becoming the new version of HBO!!!!!
10:25pm update: Comedy Actor: ALEC BALDWIN!!! I CALLED IT!!!! OH YEAH!!!!!
10:23pm update: Another expected award & it goes to Paul. John Adams is running away with Emmys tonight.
10:15pm update: Well, no surprise there. Battlestar lost out again. Sorry Matt.
10:13pm update: It’s nice to see the Emmys letting Rickles go as long as he wants.
10:09pm update: Howie Mandel’s rambling joke from Neil Patrick Harris. Very funny. VARIETY PERFORMANCE: Don Rickles. No surprise, but he deserves it. That’s for all the decades of laughter.
10:03pm update: Big win for John Adams. Called that one! Nice joke of Sally and Tom refencing Forrest Gump.
10:02pm update: Boy, the Emmys are super pushing tonight. Got to make sure they end at 11pm ET tonight!!!! How come the Oscars can go till 2am??????
10:00pm update: Another Emmy for Amazing Race. The Emmys will always love you, no matter if CBS does or not.
9:57pm update: “Get up”!!! Very true Kathy…very true. I love Don Rickles. He’ll always make me laugh. This bit is pretty good. Don is hilarious!!!
9:54pm update: M*A*S*H tribute. Boy, that series finale was horrible. The ‘saying goodbye’ part was nice, but the rest of it was pretty bad for TV standards.
9:50pm update: WHOA!!!!!!!!! NOT COOL EMMYS!!! NOT COOL. LET THE MAN FINISH HIS 15 SECONDS OF HONOR. WHO CARES WHAT HE SAYS??? VERY UNCOOL FOLKS. VERY UNCOOL.
9:48pm update: Recount is doing better than I thought it would. John Adams is doing as well as I expected.
9:46pm update: Stewart and Colbert will always be funny no matter what they do on stage. Oh, another McCain joke involving age. Hilarious….or not. It was what it was. I still laughed cause Stewart and Colbert did it.
9:43pm update: Another John Adams award. Nice.
9:41pm update: Dragnet intro. Anyone remember the remake with Ed O’Neil? Didn’t think so.
9:35pm update: Applegate looks great. Oh Recount won. Eh. No real surprise there. Nice to see Denis Leary a part of something that won an Emmy.
9:33pm update: I’d vote for Jeb Bartlet if it were possible.
9:31pm update: Oh, a West Wing tribute. I love it. God, I miss that show. You’re right Martin. You never won a best actor award. That was a crime.
9:24pm update: Way to go Tina Fey!!! There’s a reason you’re my #1 favorite female celebrity!!!!!!!
9:22pm update: I liked how the one of the directors from The Office held up a sign that said “I’m not going to win”. He was right.
9:18pm update: What was Heidi wearing there? It looked like a curtain from the late 70s.
9:15pm update: I love physical comedy. Laugh In tribute is nice. Ruth Buzzi has aged! This bit was too slow. Variety Show: YEAH!!!!! Go Jon Stewart!!!!! Long live The Daily Show.
9:11pm update: Grobin did a fine job. It wasn’t great, but he did as best as he could. I’ll give him a B+.
9:07pm update: No surprise for this award. John Adams is going to win several awards tonight.
9:01pm update: Josh Groban sang the theme to: Friends, Happy Days, Golden Girls, Mister Rogers Neighborhood, Andy Griffith Show, Love Boat, Law & Order, Addams Family, Muppet Show, X-Files, South Park, Jeffersons, Baywatch, Brady Bunch, COPS, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, SNL, Late Show with Letterman, Late Night with Conan, Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Two & a Half Men, Rawhide, Gilligan’s Island, M*A*S*H, Carol Burnett Show, Cheers. Where was the Batman theme?????
8:56pm update: Way to go Tommy!!! Speak your mind. You deserve this moment after the way CBS treated you back in the late 60s.
8:54pm update: Nice to see the Emmys correcting something like this for Tommy Smothers. Good job folks.
8:48pm update: The category for Writing: Variety is my favorite category! Late Night with Conan’s wins the award for best montage. Writing Variety: COLBERT REPORT!!! A win for America!!!!!!!
8:44pm update: That Simpsons episode is one of their best episodes. Too bad you’ll never see stuff like that again. Supporting Actress Drama: Wiest. Too bad she wasn’t there.
8:38pm update: Can Ricky Gervais host the Emmys by himself next year????? Please!!!!!!!!!!!!
8:33pm update: Ricky Gervais & that video clip show was very enjoyable!!! That Jon Stewart/Colbert/Carell bit from last year was hilarious! This bit is going very well.
8:26pm update: I will always love Felicity Huffman. Supporting Actor Drama: WOW!!!! The guy whose name I can’t spell!!! Good surprise for the night!
8:22pm update: Jean is right. Timeslots still do matter. If Samantha Who? aired on Tuesdays instead of Mondays, it would have failed…and fast!
8:18pm update: Sorry Julia. That was a lame joke. Supporting Comedy Actress: Jean Smart. That’s cool. Nothing wrong there. Was rooting for Amy.
8:14pm update: So far, the Detroit Lions have performed better than the Emmys. That’s not a good sign.
8:10pm update: Tina and Amy were funny. Supporting Comedy Actor: PIVEN!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!
8:06pm update: This intro is kinda lame. Heidi in a sparkling outfit. Still lame.
8:04 update: Heidi’s in a suit. Where’s Jeff’s tie???
8:02 update: Cute intro to the Emmys. Where was “Sock it to me” and “Holy Terror Batman!”???
7:57pm update: One of the things I hate about sunday football is that it usually delays 60 Minutes so I can’t watch a full episode. Oh well. Time to watch the Emmys.
7:50pm update: Just saw a clip of the Jimmy Kimmel special. 60 Minutes is much better. Glad I am watching that instead.
7:45pm update: The Emmys start in 15 minutes. I’ve got my Cheez-Its, my Mountain Dew, my remote. Hope this ceremony is more exciting than the Cowboys/Packers game.
*** Before we start, check out my interview with TV Guide Channel’s Chris Harrison as we talk about the 2008 Emmys! http://video.woodtv.com/?video_id=14231 *** Every year I watch the Emmys to see the best in television win awards. I keep hoping the Emmys are given to people who had a great SEASON, not just one EPISODE!!!!! I ususally don’t get to watch what I want to see. So, before the awards are handed out, let’s look at who got nominated, who I think WILL win and who I think SHOULD win.
.
Looking back on this category, I thought I’d have something bad to say about one of these series…but I don’t. All 5 of these shows are funny, but 30 Rock makes me laugh out loud the most. Plus, it should be noted that the show is able to do that with the handicapp of Tracy Morgan. I don’t think he’s that funny, and I used to not watch 30 Rock because of it, but Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin brought me in. And with those two, plus the rest of their supporting cast members, this show clearly shows anyone how great the comedy is on this show. 30 Rock should be rewarded for being the best…in this category. If It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia were in this category, I’d have a tough decision to make.
.
I think it’s clear at this point that I don’t like Boston Legal, so the fact that the show has won sevreal awards in the past already is another reason that the show doesn’t deserve this award. There are several indications that Mad Men will win this award, but I think it’s time the Emmys recognize House. Mad Men is a fine show, but I think the show moves too slow and it’s one of those shows that industry insiders like more than the public does. That’s why I think House should win Best Drama. The show has been pretty solid for the past few years and it should be rewarded. Dexter deserves an award only because I don’t expect this show to be in this category ever again. Dexter has done what great television should be: something different, but still worth watching. I know the Emmys don’t reward different shows like this, but if they ever were going to, this would be the category to do so.
.
I’m getting tired of people saying SNL is funnier than ever. No, it’s not. When Tina Fey left, she took a lot of that humor with her. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report has been funnier week after week after week AND THAT WAS EVEN DURING THE WRITER’S STRIKE!!! If anything, one of those shows should be rewarded for the great fight scene between Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert & Conan O’Brien.
Every year I watch the Emmys to see the best in television win awards. I keep hoping the Emmys are given to people who had a great SEASON, not just one EPISODE!!!!! I ususally don’t get to watch what I want to see. So, before the awards are handed out, let’s look at who got nominated, who I think WILL win and who I think SHOULD win.
.
All five nominees are deserving of this award because all of them gave wonderful television performances. The Emmys love honoring older actors, so the award will probably go to Don Rickles. But that’s OK. His preofrmance was just as strong as the rest of the nominees.
.
It’s hard for me to say who shouldn’t get this award because I don’t watch Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway & Top Chef. I don’t like those shows, but that doesn’t mean they’re badly made and shouldn’t win the Emmy. But Amazing Race has won this Emmy for the past 6 years. There’s no reason to believe it won’t win it again…and if you’ve seen the show, you’ll know why.
.
This is the first year game shows are allowed to win an award at the Primetime Emmys and I’ll be damned if Howie Mandel will be the first game show host to win it. Seacrest has done everything right as a host, but I want Bergeron to win. I’ve loved his work ever since I first saw him on FOX After Breakfast. He is a very engaging host and I hope he wins the Emmy for this first time award.
.
What was once a jewel in the crown of broadcast television, it is now a shining light of cable TV. Both John Adams and Tin Man were wonderful miniseries and both deserve an Emmy for their hard work. However, the Emmys rarely embrace science fiction/fantasy, so expect John Adams to walk away with a trophy Sunday night.

I ususally don’t get to watch what I want to see. So, before the awards are handed out, let’s look at who got nominated, who I think WILL win and who I think SHOULD win.
.
Last year Piven stole the award from Wilson & Cryer. He should not steal it again. Piven & Dillon are funny, but Wilson & Cryer deserve the award for their portrayl of lovable users. Last year, I stated that “playing the guy that gets made fun of in a TV show is hard to do“. I still believe that and it’s time the Emmys recognized the work of Wilson & Cryer. Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious as Barney, so I would love it if he won the Emmy as well.
.
This is one category that I really don’t have strong opinions about. Danson & Ivanek were great in Damages, Emerson has made Ben memorable, Slattery plays Don Draper’s boss perfectly and Shatner…well, Shatner’s Shatner. I’d like Emerson to win because he is a great actor and has played some great characters on television in the past, so really I think it’s time for Emerson to be recognized for his wonderful acting.
.
Again, Ugly Betty is not funny, so no one on that show should win an award that says they’re a comedic actor/actress. I like Vanessa Williams as an actress, just not for this show. Jean Smart & Holland Taylor are Emmy favorites & are always funny at what they do, so they’ve got a chance to win an award. However, everyone in Hollywood has been talking about how great Poehler’s Hillary performance has been and how that has rekindled SNL into pop culture. She deserves an award for that.
.
Both Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest are great actresses and I love their work and so do Emmy voters. But I love Sandra Oh; hate her character, love her acting. No other reason than that. Please give her an Emmy.
.
I’ve got Sunday completely free to watch the NFL and the Emmys. However, much like Larry Figurski with the Lions, I have high hopes for success, but won’t be surprised if the awards show drops the ball this year….again!!!
Granted, this year’s Emmys will be skewed heavily because of the Writer’s Strike that basically cut the TV season into 13 weeks in the fall and 8 weeks in the spring. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if this year’s Emmy winners come out of left field. But, I’m expecting the usual: middle of the road favorites and movie stars who appear on TV to walk away with awards on Sunday.
Every year I watch the Emmys to see the best in television win awards. I keep hoping the Emmys are given to people who had a great SEASON of work, not just one episode!!!! I usually don’t get to watch what I want to see. So, before the awards are handed out, let’s look at who got nominated, who I think WILL win and who I think SHOULD win.
Emmy voters are usually over 50+ years and they rarely show their appreciation to something new. That’s one reason Lee Pace won’t win, the show is too new to Emmy voters, plus it has been off the air since late 2007. Alec Baldwin has proven to be one of the main comedic forces on 30 Rock and it’s been a few years now, so I think Emmy voters have warmed up to his excellent performance. Monk has run its course and Tony has enough Emmys already.
James Spader has won way too many Emmys for playing Alan Stone. The fact that he has won one makes me mad. I don’t think Spader is a good actor. Now, Hugh Laurie as Dr. House, there’s someone I can root for. It’s not the easiest role in the world to play a jerk, yet Dr. House plays a jerk whom we can still like and do it week after week. Jon Hamm and the rest of Mad Men will be a wild card this year at the Emmys. I think that’s a show more people in Hollywood & TV like more than most of America, but that love in Hollywood could earn all who are in Mad Men to earn Emmy gold. Jon Hamm is great as Don Draper, but Hugh Laurie deserves to be recognized for his years as Dr. House.
.
Ugly Betty is not funny….period. Granted, I am a male and I don’t care for fashion…but still, the show is not funny. America Ferrera is a good actress, but not a comedic actress. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has enough Emmys at home; she doesn’t need another one. Mary Louise-Parker is a bad actress. I’ve hated her acting since I first saw her on The West Wing and I can’t enjoy Weeds because she’s on it. 30 Rock is what a good comedy should be and Tina Fey is the best comedic actress on TV right now. She deserves the Emmy this year for no other reason than she didn’t get it last year.
.
Earlier I said that Emmys are always rewarded to movie stars who appear in television shows. Well, this category is packed with movie actresses, so there’s no way to really know where the Emmy voters will be going with this one. I only think Sally Field shouldn’t win this year because she won last year, but I wouldn’t be upset if she won again. But I think Kyra Sedgwick deserves the Emmy award because she started this current trend of leading ladies on cable playing very strong, aggressive roles. She has played a hard character and she deserves recognition for her hard work.
As much as Emily Linnert frowns upon me when I do it in the newsroom, I’ve started twittering at Twitter.com. This service is exactly what I’ve needed for a while. There are loads of times I’ll see an article I will want to pas

Now, I can pass the articles on to you folks as soon as I read them. Plus, it allows me to pass on my thoughts as they bounce in & out of my head thoughout the day. Also, it’ll be great when I’m watching a live event (like the Super Bowl or the Emmy Awards) and I’m basically doing my own version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″. Awesome, isn’t it???
Yes, yes it is. If you’d like to follow me on Twitter (the smartest move you could make today), here’s my profile: http://twitter.com/AvitheTVGeek
