Official Twitter app for iPad now available

After months of waiting, Twitter has finally released the official twitter app for iPad. And as expected, its super awesome. So awesome that MG Siegler of TechCrunch has said that its the best iPad app yet.

With apps like Flipboard, Reeder, and Pulse, expectations were very high from for the twitter’s official iPad app. And the Twitter team has totally delivered. The app has been developed by Loren Brichter (@lorenb) and Bryan Haggerty (@bhaggs). Loren Brichter is the developer of the official twitter client for the iPhone (previously called Tweetie).

The app utilizes all the smooth UI elements of the iPad. When you start the app, you are presented with the options to either log in or read tweets from different categories like Art & Design, Sports, and News. Once you sign in, a left nav gives you the standard menu with mentions, lists, messages etc.

When you tap on a tweet, a pane is opened towards the right half of the screen. If there is any link in that tweet, it is displayed in that pane. If there is a video linked in a tweet, you can start buffering the video in that pane and continue reading other tweets in the main pain. This is a killer feature which is not available in any other app.

The app has a lot of gestures that you can use. Pinch on a tweet to reply or retweet. Pull down using two fingers to see a conversation. And yes, of course, the trademark drag and release to refresh gesture is there too!

The app has an amazing UI but you might need some time to get used to it as there is a slight learning curve for the gestures.

The app uses the same binary for iPhone and iPad. So, there is only one app in the App store. If you use the official twitter app on your iPhone, just download it on the iPad.

In addition to refreshing their iPod lineup yesterday, Apple also updated the Apple TV to its second generation. The new version comes without any inbuilt memory and is 1/4th the size of its predecessor.

According to Steve Jobs, Apple has redesigned this as per their customers’ preferences. Here are some of its key features:

Built in power supply: The new Apple TV has built in 6W universal power supply. Just plug the supplied power cord and you are all set.
TV shows rentals: You can now rent commercial free, HD (720p max) TV shows from abc and FOX on your HDTV. No need to download them on your computer first.
802.11n Wi-Fi: The fastest Wi-Fi standard. This is built in the new Apple TV. Lets you stream HD content smoothly.
Ports: HDMI, Optical audio, Ethernet and micro-USB ports at the back of the device. Note that the micro-USB port is for service and support only and cannot be used to connect a USB hard drive or pen drive.
Apple A4 chip: Apple TV uses the same processor as the iPhone 4 and the iPad. The Apple A4 chip is custom made by Apple and is optimized for media consumption.
Apple Remote: Apple TV comes with a dead simple aluminum Apple remote which works over infrared. However, you can also use your iPhone or iPod touch (if they are in the same WiFi network as Apple TV) to control it. You need to download the Remote app from App store for this which also supports gestures!
NetFlix: If you are a NetFlix subscriber, you can access the complete NetFlix library on your Apple TV. According to Jobs, this is the best implementation of NetFlix yet.
Internet video: Apple TV can fetch media from YouTube, flickr or mobileme and present them to you in a feed on your TV.
AirPlay (coming soon): This is the next version of AirTunes. With AirPlay, you can play content from any of your iDevices on your Apple TV. Since its no more limited to just tunes and lets you even play videos and watch photo slideshows on your TV.
Price: The new Apple TV is priced at $99, which is less than half of what its predecessor used to cost. According to Jobs, this price has also been kept keeping customer feedback in mind. I personally think this has been done to compete with alternatives like Roku.

Those were all the good parts. Now here is a list of things that we didn’t like:

No Full HD support: The Apple TV only supports up to 720p playback. This is so #fail. If 1080p content is not available on the iTunes store, it should at least be able to stream that off PC and play it on the TV.
No DivX support: Honestly, no home entertainment product is complete without DivX playback support.

A lot of people were expecting the new version to have iOS. That didn’t happen. The basic reason behind that is probably because iOS is Apple’s mobile OS and Apple TV is not a mobile device. It might happen in the distant future, but not anytime soon.

Apple unveiled upgrades to their iPod lines at the press event yesterday. This is the biggest refresh to their iPod line yet. You can watch the press event online here.

iPod Touch 4G:

This is a pretty major update to iPod touch. In its 4th Avatar, the iPod touch gives 40 hours of audio playback, 7 hours of video playback and now includes:

FaceTime: Front and rear facing cameras now enable to FaceTime with other iPod touch users (using their email ids) or other iPhone 4 users.
Retina Display: The gorgeous iPhone 4 screen with 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch is now also available in iPod Touch. You can compare how it differs with older models here.
HD video recording: You can now record 720p video on your iPod touch and upload it to YouTube or edit it on the device itself using iMovie.
Substantially thinner: The new iPod touch is very thin. Much thinner that its predecessors.
Game Center: Apple’s online gaming platform will let you play multiplayer games with your friends. You can challenge them to a game and they will receive it as a push notification on their iDevice. It can also match you with equally skilled players online in case you do not have any friends to play with .

You might wonder about the absence of a 16GB model and introduction of a 8GB one. Well, this is because Apple wants to put as many FaceTime devices out their as possible. And at a price of $229, many people might be willing to purchase the 8GB model just for FaceTime. At this price, the 8GB iPod Touch 4G is the cheapest contract free FaceTime device out there. If you have an iPhone 4, you can gift one to your parents to have FaceTime calls with them.

iPod Nano 6G:

The latest iPod nano do not have a click wheel anymore. Instead, they have a shiny multi touch touchscreen to control. With 24 hours of music playback, it has:

New form factor: The new nanos have a much smaller form factor. In fact, they are so small that they have a shuffle like clip which you can use to clip them on to your clothing during athletics. They still have the 30 pin dock connector, so you can use them with all the dock based accessories.
Multi touch screen: The new nanos have multi touch screen which can be rotated in any direction. This is really helpful when you clip them to your clothing and have to look at it upside down. Just use two of your fingers to rotate the screen in the orientation you want.
Price:
8GB – $149
16GB – $179

Because of the small form factor, the new nanos do not have the camera anymore and, owing to the small screen, cannot play videos anymore (well, technically they can, but it would not make sense on the small screen). If you want those, you have to get an iPod touch. Maybe this is also part of the strategy to boost sales of iPod touches and in turn increase FaceTime and iOS devices.

iPod Shuffle:

At $49, the new 2GB shuffle takes the form factor of the previous generation and gives you 15 hours of audio playback. But, this time, it has control buttons too. Yes, now there are two ways you can control your iPod shuffle – voice over and buttons.

So those are the new iPods. Notably, the good old iPod classic was not refreshed. This does not mean that Apple has discontinued it, it is still available to purchase on the Apple online store, however, this might signal an iPod era sans magnetic hard disks in the future.

Procedure

Although the procedure doesn’t erase any data whatsoever, we’d suggest you to backup important data. Also, we should pass along the statutory warning from the developers that the procedure has the potential to brick your phone, even though we have never faced it or seen anyone facing it.

Install the Samsung Utility from the CDROM that came along with your phone. This will also install the phone drivers.
Unzip the downloaded ZIP file and keep all 3 files in the same folder.
Turn off your phone and remove the SIM, leave the SD Card as it is.
Open Odin Multi Downloader
- Make sure only “Reboot”, “Protect OPS” and “Reset Time” are checked and “Reset Time” is set to 300.
- Select the OPS file from the ZIP in the “Select OPS” field.
- Select the tar file from the ZIP in the PDA field of “Select Images to Download”.
Hold Volume Down + Camera + End Call keys for some time till your Phone shows a “Downloading…” screen.
Connect your phone to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
- Odin should detect your phone and show a COM port mapping.
- If it doesn’t work try a different USB port or reinstall the drivers and start from Step 4 again.
Press Start.
- You’ll see a green progress bar and a timer. The display on the top will say RESET. The “Message” field in bottom left will display certain messages. You can ignore the messages and wait for the process to complete.
- If timer starts but progress bar doesn’t, close Odin and disconnect the phone from the computer. Take out and re-insert the batter and move to Step 5.
- After some time the RESET will change to a PASS. Wait for the timer to be over and display to change to a blue background saying PASS.Your phone will reboot during the process.
If the phone booted into “System Recovery” mode, select the “Reboot system now” option.
Once the phone boots normally, goto Settings/About Phone. You’ll see Leshak’s kernel and Samdroid.net build. Your phone has been rooted successfully!

New Stuff

You can press Volume Down + Call + End Call keys while booting to enter the Recovery mode. This can be used to partition SD card, clear caches, make system backups and install updates and patches.
You can find a new SuperUser app on your phone. This lets you use applications which run only on Rooted phones. We recommend installing the following two from the market for now:
- CacheCleaner
  Cleans up all the user/system app cache in a single click. No need to goto every app and remove the cache.
- TitaniumBackup
  Backups all your apps and settings and allows you to remove any protected app.
Apps2SD
Everyone hates Android because of the limited App install memory. They fixed it in Froyo but Samsung has no plans to release it on Spica. So the only solution is to setup Apps2SD. The good news is that Apps2SD is included In the kernel you just installed. All you need to do is backup your SD card, make an ext2 partition on it using the Recovery console, and reboot. When the phone boots up all your Apps and cache would’ve been moved to the SD Card.
We personally recommend you to not move your Apps to SD Card unless you have a Class 6 SD Card. It will make your phone noticeably slow.
Wifi Tethering
The kernel includes a WiFi tethering app. You can use your Spica with EDGE/3G as a Wireless router.

As we said before, rooting gives you loads of abilities. This article just covered some of the basic stuff that won’t take much effort. In the future articles we will explain how to enable Multi Touch, install a custom firmware and more.

YouTube’s new Movies section with mostly crappy movies

YouTube has launched a new Movies category where they offer free full length feature films. Currently they offer 400 titles, but plan to add more as indicated by the deals they have been striking up with various movie studios.

As of now, it’s a strange collection of movies. You’d find the weirdest of movie titles. Sample the Horror collection with movies like “OC Babes and the Slasher of Zombietown”, “Satan’s School for Girls” and “Wasp Woman”. It’s basically a collection of unknown grindhouse titles. The Comedy & Drama sections are full of semi-porn titles. It’s as obscure as a movie collection can get.

Before you dismiss it completely, have a look at the Bollywood section. It has a surprising good collection of ever popular movies like “Andaz Apna Apna”, “Hera Pheri”, “Maine Pyar Kiya” and “Amar Akbar Anthony” and old classics like “Half Ticket”, “Gumnaam”, “Pukar” and “Bawarchi”. You can also find some not so popular but excellent movies like “Makdi” and “Manorama Six Feet Under”. But as if adding crappy movies was essential, they’ve also added titles like “Jimmy” and “Saali ne Kela Ghotala”

We hope the deals with the movie studios materialize soon but for now all you can do is to browse the list and chuckle at the obscure titles or watch some of the classic Bollywood movies.

At a price tag of INR 22,000, we would have also expected at least 6 months subscription to Xbox Live Gold and a HDMI cable (seriously, what’s the fucking point of bundling a composite cable and advertising the HD capabilities of a device?). A decent HDMI cable will cost you around INR 1000 in India. Considering that the same console is available at $300 (approx. INR 14,000) in the US, we would say that Microsoft is ripping off Indian consumers. They can blab about import duties all they want, but a price difference of INR 8,000 is totally absurd. We would recommend you to wait for a few days for the console to be available in “unorganized” retail stores in India and save a few thousand bucks. Also, keep checking forums like http://www.consoul.in as they usually run attractive deals.

However, if you cannot wait, you can buy it online at the Microsoft Store.

Call phones from Gmail

Gmail has the most advanced webmail chat client. It supports voice and video chat with other Gmail chat users if both parties have mic and webcam.

Starting today, Gmail users in the US have the ability to call phone numbers right from within Gmail. They can use their computer’s mic and speakers to talk to the person they are calling.

Apparently, calls to US and Canada numbers will be free until this year’s end. Calling to other countries is also pretty cheap at close to 2 cents per minute.

Google is rolling out this feature to all its US based users slowly. So it might take some time before this is enabled in your account. Once it is available, you will see a “Call phone” option in your chat list, clicking on which will pop up a keypad using which you can call any phone number.

TataSky+ launches iPhone app to schedule recording on the go

Back in April, TataSky+ launched 3 new features to compete with rival Airtel’s digital TV recorder. One of the features was dual access remote recording which enables TataSky+ users to schedule recording from internet using either a web browser or your mobile phone. While any TataSky+ user could use mytatasky.com to schedule recording via the web, only people with Java enabled or Symbian based handsets had the option to schedule recordings on the go using their mobiles. Not anymore.

TataSky+ has launched a free iPhone app using which iPhone (and iPod touch) users can schedule recordings on the go from anywhere in the world. All they need is data access on their mobile. The app has been developed by Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Pvt. Ltd..

The iPhone app has a similar UI that of the Symbian app. Currently, the guide is limited to next 3 days on the mobile apps, whereas on the web based interface, you can schedule recordings up to 7 days in advance. Also, just like the web interface, you cannot cancel any scheduled recording. You can do it from the STB only.

We are unable to test the app as it needs iOS 4. We will be able to provide feedback in a few days when we lay our hands on an iPhone 4. However, we do not understand why they need iOS 4 for this app as (in our opinion) it won’t be using any of the key features of iOS 4 like multitasking, background transfer etc. Also, they could have easily made a web based app optimized for different mobile phone browsers and could have given access to it on m.mytatasky.com or something similar. That way, they would not have to make different apps for different platforms. In fact, TiVo, a popular TataSky+ like service in the US does it this way on m.tivo.com.

Anyways, if you have an iOS 4 based device, you can download the app form the App Store for free here.

Tata Teleservices launches India’s first Mobile broadband Wi-Fi solution

Tata Teleservices has launched India’s first Wi-Fi based mobile broadband solution called TATA Photon Wi-Fi at a price tag of INR 4999. The pocket sized device lets multiple devices like laptop, smartphones or tablets connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi. The device itself connects to Tata’s network over the carrier’s CDMA network (similar to its other photon devices).

Think of the device as a Wi-Fi router. Only that this router is always connected to the internet using Tata’s CDMA network with download speed up to 3.1 Mbps and upload speed up to 1.8 Mbps. Multiple Wi-Fi devices can connect to it and surf the internet. The internet speed will be distributed among all the users. A typical use case of such a device is a family travelling on the road with each member’s device connected to the internet over Wi-Fi. The device will work anywhere where Tata’s network is available. So you can even take it on train journeys with you.

The USP of the device is the ability to support upto 5 devices simultaneously even when on the go. The device small enough to fit inside your pocket. The device automatically shifts to CDMA 1x mode (144Kbps speed) where CDMA 2x network is not available.

I recently found a simple but smart project called 3-tap middle click. It does exactly what it says. It maps the 3-finger tap gesture to middle click on your Mac. It works perfectly with all applications.

Facebook’s iPhone app updated with Places

Facebook totally wants to get in the location game with Places. Facebook Places is a Foursquare like feature in which you can check in a place on Facebook if you are physically present at that place. For example, if you are in your neighborhood comic book store, you can check in to it on Facebook so that your friends can know where you are. You can also tag your friends if they are present there.

Previously, the feature was only available on touch.facebook.com for the iPhone and iPad. Facebook has updated its iPhone app to version 3.2 (there is still no official iPad app yet) to include the Places feature. This means you can use the updated Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad to use the feature.

What’s New In Version 3.2

New features:
- Places. Use Places to see where your friends are and share where you are.
- You can set the privacy of individual status updates.
- See all recipients of inbox messages.
- (iOS 4) Upload photos and videos in the background.
Bug fixes:
- Fixed a delay when commenting on a post or posting a status update.

Yahoo Mail is still the largest web mail service in the world. Gmail is gaining popularity, however, it is still behind Yahoo in terms on number of users.

Soon after the iPad was released, Gmail launched an iPad version. Yahoo is catching up and has recently launched a HTML5 version of its popular web mail service for iPad users. This version leverages advanced HTML5 abilities like caching and panes with individual scrolling to give the user a rich Inbox view. You can compose and send email messages even if you are offline as it caches your mails and then sends them whenever an internet connection is available.

The new version also lets you preview photo attachments right in the Inbox view. In addition, users can now find and organize messages using Full Search, personal folders and Smart Folders with messages from your most important contacts, and view photos in optimized resolution for the iPad.
