Authorities in Philadelphia arrested George Lee Barnes Friday night.

Police said he was armed at the time of his capture.

State troopers said he is responsible for shooting and killing another man in Edwardsville last week.

Investigators said Barnes killed Daron Trollinger at a development on Beverly Drive over drugs.

Barnes was also wounded in the incident. At first officers thought that he was a victim.

The District Attorney in Luzerne County said her office is working on bringing George Lee Barnes back to our area as soon as possible.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember all those who fought for our country, and honor all those who continue the fight today.

In Lackawanna County, several young baseball players did just that in Moscow.

More than 50 kids planted American Flags at a cemetery to keep the memory alive of our fallen service men and women.

With a smile and a little elbow grease, two young girls from the Moscow American Legion baseball team helped honor the many men and women who fought for our country, and lost the ultimate battle.

Fellow teammates said it’s because of our troops both past and present that they are able to do what they love today.

“It’s just a way to give back to the community to give back to the veterans without them, we wouldn’t be able to play baseball today so it’s a good way to give back,” said Joey Runco of Moscow.

More than 50 players with the Moscow team came out to the cemetery at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish in Moscow.

One by one, they set up flags at each and every grave to remember the service men and women who gave their lives.

“People don’t do enough for them, so it’s good to get out, come over here, set the flags down on the graves, it’s a good cause for everybody,” said Chris Gaetano of Moscow.

The older kids helped out the younger kids with the flags, and getting them into the grass.

They said the lesson they’re all learning is priceless.

“Now that we’re older, we know what’s going on, and we’re just not going through the motions, we know what it’s for, growing up helps us realize how they fought for our freedom,” said Billy Nelson of Moscow.

“I think it’s great for the kids to start this early, understand what it is to be a veteran and help our troops, we support them 100 percent,” said Tony Gaetano of Moscow American Legion Baseball.

The Moscow American Legion baseball team has been setting up flags for our troops for about 20 years.

A Luzerne County landmark devastated by the September floods is back in business.

The Garden Drive-In movie theater near Shickshinny reopened Friday night, with movies rolling on both of its screens.

For movie fans gathering in Luzerne County, getting to take in the third installment of the Men In Black franchise has been a much awaited event.

“Men In Black and then Ghost Rider Two,” said Joseph Johnson of Nanticoke.

Even more exciting is where they`re getting to watch it.

It`s movie time once again at the Garden Drive-In near Shickshinny, with double features on both its screens.

“This is what we do all summer, we come here at least once every weekend just about,” said Ann Marie Zugarek, who brought her two sons.

“You got your drinks, you got your food,” said Sam Sponenberg of Berwick. “And you got fresh air, that`s the main thing and stretching room.”

But keeping the Garden Drive-In open was something its owners thought might not be possible just last year.

The drive-in was devastated by the Susquehanna River when it flooded back in September.

The water was so powerful it ripped the roof right off the concession stand.

“The damage was real bad but we had a lot of people that are returners, they come every weekend and they kept saying, if you need help,’ said owner Kim Barbacci. “There were just so many saying please open, whatever we can do, we`ll help.”

And with that community support, the concession stand is bustling again and so is the drive-in.

“It’s awesome,” said Sponenberg. “The flood, I thought this was going to be gone, never going to be back, I`m glad it`s up and running.”

The drive-in is a landmark for Luzerne County.

The Garden Drive-In was featured on Newswatch 16`s “On The Pennsylvania Road” in 2001 when it celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Zugarek has been coming here since she was a little girl and now she’s brings her two little ones.

“It`s nice because we get to do it as a family and the younger ones don`t have to sit down, be quiet, they can have their free range a little while longer.”

Movies will play at the Garden Drive-In on two screens Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights throughout the summer.

For several years, a Memorial Day Parade marched down Main Street in Stroudsburg.

However, this year there will be no parade because the organizer got sick.

Now, a veterans group is organizing a memorial service to make sure none of our military heroes is forgotten.

“We need to represent our veterans. We can’t let them go without being remembered. We couldn’t do a parade this year because our new organization formed last fall and we don’t have the means or the backing yet to put on a parade,” said Lehy Kirchner, the vice chairman of the Monroe County Veterans Association.

The Monroe County Veterans Association is planning a ceremony for 1:00 Sunday in front of the Monroe County Courthouse.

The ceremony is near and dear to their hearts, as each of them has served our country.

They proudly showed Newswatch 16 pictures of when they were serving overseas, some in Vietnam.

“We honor those who have fallen and that’s what it’s about, to honor our war dead and their service to our county,” said Glen Lippincott, the chairman of the Monroe County Veterans Association.

“We’re going to have guest speakers, patriotic music, we’re going to have a glee club,” said Kirchner.

“Everybody thinks it a good time for a barbecue or picnic. That’s a good thing. But you need to stop and remember the entitlements we’re so used to taking for granted, somebody had to pay for that. A lot of them paid for that with their lives,” said Lippincott.

The Monroe County Veterans Association is hosting a ceremony on Sunday at 1 p.m. in front of the Monroe County Courthouse, at Courthouse Square.

The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau is focusing on Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media to draw in crowds this summer.

“We have over 29,000 fans on our Facebook site for the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau and we use that as a channel to communicate on a daily basis with people who are interested in following what’s going on here,” said Carl Wilgus, the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau CEO.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort has also jumped on the social media bandwagon.

It’s so involved in Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to name a few, that it’s hired a “Social Media Coordinator” to constantly update statuses and post pictures from in and around the resort.

“Basically people like to see where we are and what we do. Our activities director e-mailed me a couple of pictures. I will post those of a hike, a lizard, a newt, pictures of the Delaware Water Gap, pictures of the fog, people like that,” said Charles Pruettipun, the Social Media Coordinator.

Taking pictures and then posting those pictures is one of the many great things about social media, according to Pruettipun. However, not everything is so ‘picture perfect’ when it comes to social media. Especially when guests post bad reviews.

“If someone posts a comment we don’t like, a bad comment about Shawnee, we let it stay there. We answer them the best we can online and then look to our staff to fix that issue,” said Rob Howell, the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort General Manager.

But if you don’t “like” social media and just aren’t a “fan”, you can always use your phone to call the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau for information about what’s happening this summer.

It’s going to be a busy weekend for grocery stores. The staff at Boyer’s Food Market near Elysburg was celebrating Memorial Day a little early. Grilling hot dogs for hungry shoppers as they bought last-minute food and supplies for their holiday picnics.

“It’s at my house and I’m not a party person so I’m scrambling at the last-minute trying to make sure I have everything,” said Becky Weinhofer.

People piled into the grocery store in Northumberland County, grabbing all the goodies for Memorial Day weekend.

“All the ingredients for macaroni salad and potato salad, and probably some chips and pretzels and soda,” Ruth Brassington said.

Staff at Boyer’s made it easy for them by putting picnic supplies in a tent set up outside the store. Ruth Brassington saved time by peeling corn on the cob inside the store.

“We’re going to be grilling and of course having corn on the cob and thinking about our veterans,” Brassington said.

In addition to grocery stores being very busy on Memorial Day weekend, staff at Champion Beverages near Shamokin said they are seeing three times the amount of people as they usually do.

“Beer, some wine coolers and we have about 40-50 people at our house on Sunday so it’s going to be a festive weekend,” said Mike McLaughlin.

The staff at Champion Beverages expects to be busy all weekend, and is even having extended hours to deal with the rush.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to spend at least part of their Memorial Day weekend at campgrounds in Pennsylvania.

Going camping on Memorial Day weekend is a tradition for many. A popular spot is at Knoebels Campground near Elysburg. Some prefer the luxury of an RV, while others stay in tents.

“Roughing it. We love it,” said Gary Fissel.

Gary Fissel and his family camp at Knoebels Amusement Resort every year. They bring their own food and spend time together, sitting by a fire.

“This is a family tradition for the last 25 years. It’s usually about 15 to 20 of us here. We have three corner sites and look forward to coming every year,” Fissel said.

A spokesperson for Knoebels said there are 600 campsites and they’re booked solid for Memorial Day weekend. Debbie Adler said it’s an inexpensive way to have a family vacation, and kick off the summer.

“We go in the amusement park, we go swimming, and we have a big family dinner. Everybody cooks on the barbecue grills. We just have a blast,” Adler said.

A spokesperson for Knoebels said this weekend the population of the campground exceeds the population of Elysburg. Campers said they come from all over the country.

“We’re from the Frederick, Maryland area, about 10 miles outside of Frederick,” said Dwayne Bichner.

The Bichner family has camped at Knoebels on Memorial Day for over 30 years.

“This is months in the planning, the kids decide what rides we’re going on first. How we’re going to go through the park. This is looked forward to every Memorial Day,” Bichner said.

Campers said what they look forward to most of all is going on all the rides at Knoebels Amusement Resort!

A new memorial is taking shape in Lackawanna County. The monument to honor veterans in the borough of Taylor won’t be ready for this memorial day, but, the project has come a long way already.

What was once just a patch of grass outside the Taylor Community Center on Main Street is being transformed. There’s still a lot of work to do there, but the empty plot will fill a void.

That’s what members of the American Legion in Taylor said. Many of them are veterans who felt kind of forgotten in their borough.

“When the mayor came up with this idea I thought, ‘this is great! We will have a monument right here in Taylor, little town like Taylor,’” said Legion member Ron Breithaupt.

Workers from the borough are prepping the veterans monument site, which should be done in time for next Memorial Day. The plans were the brain child of Taylor’s mayor. The monument will feature a steel star that will bear the names of veterans from Taylor.

“I don’t think there is anything like ours anywhere,” said Mayor Richard Bowen.

That star will weigh about a ton and is being constructed by students at Johnson College in Lackawanna County. Bowen said the design idea came easily. Raising the money for the project took much longer, almost five years. But, he said, the wait has been well worth it.

“In support of the military and veterans who served, past and present, and we’re looking forward to recognizing our veterans from Taylor borough,” added Bowen.

The borough received a $10 thousand state grant for the flagpoles and flags that will fly this memorial day. The rest of the memorial is funded through donations.

Borough officials said they are still about $6 thousand short but they hope to have everything finished by Veteran’s Day in November.

The stormtracker 16 team is forecasting temperatures in the 80s this holiday weekend.

Perfect weather for the opening of a water park in Scranton.

Sno Cove opened for the season on Friday.

With the sun coming out and warm temperatures in the forecast many people are ready for the summer fun to begin, and some people got lucky.

Managers said there was such a high demand for Sno Cove Water Park in Scranton to open with the holiday weekend and 80 degree weather, they decided to open a day early.

Nancy Kaminski, director of sales and marketing, said they’ve been working towards their opening day for months.

“We had a lot of calls from our local schools who were getting out and had no school so they were wanting to know if we were open so we thought we’ll do our best just to get open for that and our season passers,” said Kaminski.

Maggie Flynn of Scranton was off from school and came out to have some fun in the water and catch some waves.

“I like the wild wave pool because I get to jump over them and I get hit with them so it’s kind of like the ocean,” said Flynn.

Other people were having fun being tossed around in one of the park’s big attractions, the Tundra Tornado.

A first timer at Sno Cove, Louella Zender, said being at the park made her feel young again and she loves it.

“I actually felt like a little kid, I was like go in a candy store. I wanted to go and hurry up but we had to wait,” said Zender of Carbondale.

While Sno Cove brings fun to family and friends around the area, it’s also opened up about 500 to 600 part-time jobs.

Employee Alyssa Depietro said she loves interacting with children and having fun, so Sno Cove was a perfect fit.

“You come here and everyone’s so friendly and welcoming and you just get to walk around, see everyone having fun, it’s a good time,” said Depietro.

Many people are expected to visit state parks this holiday weekend.

A few years ago a lack of parking was a problem at Beltzville State Park in Carbon County.

Many visitors who illegally parked had their vehicles towed..

Steps are being taken to fix the problem.

We found state workers busy at the state park near Lehighton. People were trimming trees, loading the limbs and even cutting the grass. All in preparation for the big Memorial Day weekend. Some of these workers will be there during the holiday making sure visitors have a good and clean time.

“Probably cleaning the bathrooms, it sounds like a bad job but for the money I am getting it’s decent,” said Paul Zelonis, a state worker.

Park officials will be keeping a close eye on the parking situation. All along the road leading to the park you’ll find plenty of no parking signs.

On Memorial Day weekend two years ago, officials said the no parking signs were up but so many people came, they had no place to park. Many illegally parked. Most of the illegally parked vehicles were towed away.

“It creates a dangerous mix of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and because of people parking on the road, then emergency vehicles can’t get through so it creates quite a problem,” said Kevin Koflanovich, Beltzville Park Manager.

State officials said if the normal parking areas, which will hold 900 vehicles, fill up they have opened up this area which will hold 400 more.

Ethel Schuler is beating the crowds by getting to the park early.

“Unfortunately people don’t pay attention to signs like that. I wouldn’t park there personally but other people might, and with it saying no parking maybe they should be towed, maybe they deserve it,” said Schuler.

Park officials said anyone ignoring the no parking signs this year will be towed. If Beltzville reaches its parking capacity the entrance will close and visitors will directed to other state parks.

Some people are spending these days leading up to Memorial Day by cleaning and sprucing up cemeteries across our area.

New American flags also fly from veterans’ graves.

Families of the dead say they appreciate all the work done at one cemetery near Nanticoke.

Judy Knorr clears away leaves from her uncle’s grave at the St. Adalbert’s cemetery in Glen Lyon.

“These young men and woman gave their lives for our freedom and that`s one thing that one thing they should remember until the day they die and get buried,” said Knorr.

The WWII veteran died nearly seventy years ago. Judy and her husband Wilbur stopped by to pay their respect and plant flowers.

“What goes in my heart he died too young. He died too young and saw too much and he was never the same when he came back I feel we owe him that much to come and take care of his grave,” added Knorr.

The caretaker at St. Adalbert’s cemetery Joe Hillar keeps the grounds looking clean.

“Honor the veterans and keep it nice all year but we do an extra special job for this weekend,” said Hillar.

Maintaining a cemetery this size is no easy task. Workers here spent all week sprucing it up. They call this the most important weekend of the year.

Retired United States Air Force Sergeant John Kotz put the finishing touches on the landscaping. After serving 20 years in the military, he now helps out at the cemetery. Sergeant Kotz says it’s not about the pay, it’s about the respect.

“Lots of separation from families. Lots of missed first time things and I take the respect to that because I know what they did and that`s why I like to do it,” said Sergeant Kotz.

The juicy red fruit is a staple of summertime, but how does this year’s strawberry crop measure up?

At a farm in Columbia County the strawberry fields are almost ready to open to the public.

There aren’t any people at Seesholtz Farms near Mifflinville yet, but owner John Seesholtz said next week business will be booming. It may seem a little early for strawberries, but that’s because Seesholtz said the berries are a week ahead of schedule.

“With the warm weather we’ve been having they’re going to be earlier coming on. That usually means they’re going to end sooner too,” said John Seesholtz, owner.

The weather problems started with last September’s tropical storm when Seesholtz said his farm in Columbia County got around 30 inches of rain.

“That leads to root diseases in the plants so they have to fight back from that. I’m thinking this crop there will be berries but not as big as normal,” said Seesholtz.

While Seesholtz said many of the berries are ready now, most of them will be good to go by next week.

“It won’t be a really good year but there should be plenty of berries coming around later in the season,” said Seesholtz.

Seesholtz Farms has two strawberry fields, one near Mifflinville, and another one right outside of Bloomsburg, both will be open for picking next week.

38-year-old Scranton native Tommy Dempsey takes over as the new Men’s Head Basketball coach at Binghamton University.

President Harvey G. Stenger and Athletic Director Patrick J. Elliott made the announcement this morning inside the Events Center on the campus of Binghamton University.

Dempsey leaves Rider University where he spent the last seven seasons compiling an overall record of 119-105.

Dempsey’s 2007-2008 Rider squad won 23 games and had leading scorer Jason Thompson on the team. Thompson captured the MAAC player of the year honors and was taken by the Sacramento Kings as a lottery pick at #12 in the 2008 NBA Draft.

That season Dempsey earned MAAC Coach of the Year honors.

Dempsey brings prior coaching experience from Lackawanna College, Keystone College, Wyoming Seminary, and two years as an assistant at Susquehanna University to this new position.

In 2003 Dempsey’s team at Lackawanna won a school record 33 games.

While at Keystone for two years the Giants went 55-8 and won a school record 29 games in 2001-2002.

Tommy’s high school coach Jack Kelly from Dunmore was in attendance.

Tommy’s wife, Amy, and their four children also on hand for the big announcement.

Dempsey takes over as the new head coach for Mark Macon the former Temple Owl shooting guard.

Joe Addvensky of Delaware Valley hit a rbi single over the right fielder’s head Wednesday night for the 2-1 extra inning victory over Williamsport. The Warriors now advance to the District 2/4 AAAA semi-finals where they will face Wyoming Valley West.

Delaware Valley scored in the bottom of the second inning on a Kyle Clark bloop single to center.

Williamsport tied up the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly rbi, but couldn’t take advantage of some timely hitting in the seventh. The Millionaires runner from third called out at home plate on a bang-bang play.

Her winning time of 57.56 seconds was a hair off of Lauren Ellsworth’s District record time set last year, now Viti is hoping for victory at states this weekend as the two seed in the 400.

“We’ll coach as always told us go out hard. Then coast by maintaining your speed for the backstretch. Then kick at the 200 and pray for the last 100,” said Amy Viti.

“We started her out last year she was in the 800. We brought her down to the 400 and she’s able to finish quite well. We have to get by Friday down there. We have to get her into the final for Saturday,” said Al Weston.

Before Amy became a specialist in the 400 and running times under :58 seconds which is once around the track here at Hanover Area she actually started her career as a distance runner and it’s been quite an easy transition going to the 400 which involves stamina and Amy already has that down.

“It’s definitely a little change I think that my initial distance background actually helped me in the four because it gave me that base that I needed and then towards the end of the season I just worked on speed and the 400 really come together pretty good,” again said Amy.

Coach AL Weston believes good distance runners can blossom in the 400.

“I would rather come down. I would rather do what we did with Amy. She has quick feet. She has good turnover and we’re able to bring her down. I prefer that Steve yes,” again said Al.

We are here with Amy Viti and our intern Lyndsay Barna (3 time District II champion from Western Wayne) and by now Lyndsay you must know how we end every Newswatch 16 sports story with “Pushups”. Thanks Lyndsay. Count us down Amy. Down one. Down two. Good luck at states.
