The Undead Rat begins a survey of the International Horror Guild Awards with the list of the first ever IHG Award winners for work in 1994

Today we’re going to begin a special series taking a retrospective look at the International Horror Guild Awards. The awards were handed out yearly between 1995 and 2008.

Sadly the IHG is no longer in existence but their website is still available at www.horroraward.org.

During their run, they provided a nice counterpoint to the HWA’s Bram Stoker Awards and seemed to actively look beyond the US borders for horror fiction worthy of nomination.

If you’re looking for quality horror fiction to read, consulting awards lists like the IHG, Stoker, Shirley Jackson and Black Quill Awards are good places to start.

The International Horror Guild presented their first awards at the World Horror Convention held March 2-5, 1995.

There are no nominations lists or short lists of nomination available for the first four years of the awards.

During the first three years of the award’s existence, the works were selected and judged differently than they would be after 1997. Not much information is available about the early judging process of the award.

Winner of the 1994 IHG Award Recognizing Outstanding Achievement in a Novel

It is 1888 and Queen Victoria has remarried, taking as her new consort Vlad Tepes, the Wallachian Prince infamously known as Count Dracula.

Peppered with familiar characters from Victorian history and fiction, the novel follows vampire Genevieve Dieudonne and Charles Beauregard of the Diogenes Club as they strive to solve the mystery of the Ripper murders.

Anno Dracula is a rich and panoramic tale, combining horror, politics, mystery and romance to create a unique and compelling alternate history. Acclaimed novelist Kim Newman explores the darkest depths of a reinvented Victorian London.

This brand-new edition of the bestselling novel contains unique bonus material, including a new afterword from Kim Newman, annotations, articles and alternate endings to the original novel.

A brilliant, ambitious new novel speculates on Dracula’s survival. Set in Victorian England, this chilling tale wonders, “What if Count Dracula didn’t die via the stake, but managed to become an adviser to the Queen? And what if Jack the Ripper was in reality none other than Bram Stoker’s hero, Jack Seward, killing off vampiric whores?”

Lucy Taylor has a rare gift of writing horror stories about sex that are extremely provocative, and yet touched as well as with longing, even wistfulness.

In these nine tales about demons and angels, wrestlers and boxers, and other denizens of a netherworld of erotic terror, she achieves just the right balance of a bleak, unflinching worldview, and characters whose need for fulfillment reveals their underlying humanity.

Winner of the 1994 IHG Award Recognizing Outstanding Achievement in an Anthology

A sexy new repackaging of the extremely popular anthology of vampire erotica, edited by acclaimed author Poppy Z. Brite.

The classic horror tale is about fear. But in the last few years a new literature of the macabre has arisen, one that goes deeper than horror, beyond fear, to explore our darkest, most intimate hungers. The ones even lovers are forbidden to share.

Acclaimed dark fantasy author Poppy Z. Brite has brought together this genre’s most powerful and seductive authors in an original collection of vampiric erotica, a shameless celebration of unspeakable intimacies. It is not for everyone.

But neither is the night.

One of the most acclaimed young authors of dark fantasy gathers together an original collection of 20 erotic vampire stories penned by her favorite writers. Not since Anne Rice wrote as Anne Rampling has fantasy been celebrated with such powerful and seductive tales of unspeakable, forbidden, and macabre intimacies.

Gerard Houarner and Crossroad Press have reprinted the first book in The Resurrection Cycle — called The Beast That Was Max — about an assassin named Max and the demon that lives to kill and resides inside of him.

Now they’ve reprinted A Blood of Killers, a collection of horror short stories with the origin story of Max and twelve original stories that take place in the time between his origin and The Beast that was Max.

You don’t need to have read the Resurrection Cycle to enjoy the Max stories, which Mr. Houarner collectively calls “The Twelve Fucked Up Jobs” or TFUJ for short.

Prolific horror author Houarner (The Oz Suite) assembles a disturbing collection of 13 reprints and 12 originals.

Most of the tales highlighting his twisted supernatural assassin, Max (featured in 2001′s The Beast That Was Max), are brief, but “Like Smoke Rising from the Burning Ghats” offers detailed descriptions of a young boy in Calcutta becoming something monstrous, and the novella “Dancing with the Skeletons at the Feast of the Dead” is almost symphonic in its depiction of brutality in a small Mexican village.

The other stories are no less dark: in “Let Me Tell You a Story,” a babysitter manipulates her charges into committing acts of evil, while “The Shape” is a harsh tale of mental illness and abuse. The bleakness might turn off some readers, but fans of intense, psychology-driven horror and sharp writing will be more than satisfied.

Remember the werewolves of old stories and films, those bloodthirsty monsters that transformed under the full moon, reminding us of the terrible nature that lives within all of us?

Today’s werewolves are much more suave and even sexy, and they moved from British moors to New York City lofts, shaved, and got jobs.

But as the tales of these writers will show you, they remained no less wild and passionate, and they still tug at the part of our being where a wild animal used to be.

Horror author Brian Hodge has two websites — BrianHodge.net where he talks about his writing, both horror and crime fiction, and Warrior Poet where he talks about the writer’s life and career in general.

The other day, another horror writer (who shall go nameless because I’m tired of mention Brian Keene every time I have something interesting to share with you) turned me onto a post by Brian Hodge where he talks about some of the difficulties a writer’s life can place upon a marriage or long term relationship.

Writer or not, this is a fascinating article that I think you’ll want to read, with contributions from other horror writers like Elizabeth Massie, Mark Alan Gunnells, Barb Hendee and . . . um . . . Brian Keene.

This collection contains Displacement which was nominated for the 2011 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novella.

Stories from the Plague Years is the first fiction collection from award-winning fantasy author Michael Marano.

Nine tales are arranged in a haunting symphony that guides readers through a tour of the darkest landscapes of human existence. Here, fury and hate grow so strong, they cannot be held within one man’s body, and manifest themselves to devastating effect. Cities contain second, unseen cities populated by the vengeful ghosts of those who died too soon. Countries fall to famine and war.

But these are also the tales of love lasting beyond death, love existing beyond all hope, and friendships never forgotten. Included are the widely praised stories “Winter Requiem,” “The Siege,” and the controversial “Burden,” as well as two original novellas.

Marano, acclaimed for his evocative voice, paints lush portraits both terrifying and tender, injecting even the darkest of fantasies with a punk rock sensibility and a touch of the humane. With Stories from the Plague Years, he presents snapshots of a time when our world collided with evil, sickness, and self-destruction and left behind lasting scars on those who dared to survive.

Nominated for the 2011 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Edited Anthology

Open this book at your own peril!

That is because this volume is exactly what it says on the cover — A Book of Horrors contains all-original stories by some of the most successful and exciting names in modern horror fiction.

For the first time in many years, here is an original anthology of horror and dark fantasy in all its many and magnificent guises — from classic pulp-style tales of Dark and Stormy Nights, through more contemporary and psychological terrors, to the type of cutting-edge fiction that only the very best horror fiction can deliver.

Brought together from around the world by World Fantasy Award-winning editor Stephen Jones, one of Britain’s most acclaimed and experienced anthologists of horror fiction, here are many of the authors who have helped shaped the genre in all of its forms, along with terrifying tales of unease by a new generation of storytellers devoted to the Dark Side.

But be warned: once you begin to delve within these pages, your imagination and senses will be assaulted by terrors both grim and gruesome, literary and lethal, that will stay with you long after you have closed its covers and tried to put aside the images and situations which have wormed their way deep within your mind.

Don’t blame us for the bad dreams or cold sweats that these tales will induce. We did tell you — this is A Book of Horrors, and once you open it there is no way that these scarifying stories will ever be forgotten . . . no matter how much you wish that the nightmares will just go away!

Legends and myths of all cultures tell of those possessing captivating allure we are powerless to resist.

Sirens, demon lovers, femme fatales, and others compel our love, drawing us into realms of forbidden desire and uncontrollable passion. These seductions are not always supernatural, nor even sexual.

We can be haunted by unrequited desire, ensnared by our own minds, or swept away by another’s madness.

Obsession overwhelms, takes us to irrational extremes, involves us in dangerous liaisons and fatal attractions . . . obsession consumes. Enticing, compulsively readable tales from nineteen masterful storytellers.

A bewitching brew of stories sure to enchant.

Surrounded by the aura of magic, witches have captured our imaginations for millennia and fascinate us now more than ever.

No longer confined to the image of a hexing old crone, witches can be kindly healers and protectors, tough modern urban heroines, holders of forbidden knowledge, sweetly domestic spellcasters, darkly domineering, sexy enchantresses, ancient sorceresses, modern Wiccans, empowered or persecuted, possessors of supernatural abilities that can be used for good or evil — or perhaps only perceived as such.

Welcome to the world of witchery in many guises: wicked, wild, and wonderful. Includes two original, never-published stories.

A short horror movie called One of Those Faces is now available and is must viewing for any serious student of horror.

This will be a short post letting you know that a short short horror film called One of Those Faces — which is based upon a great novella by one of my favorite horror authors Gary A. Braunbeck called “Rami Temporalis” — is now available for viewing from Gary’s Facebook page.

Just point your browser to http://www.facebook.com/gary.braunbeck to watch it. This is a golden opportunity for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet and a chance to remember something special again if, like me, you already have.

It’s also a terrific instructor — it can show you that horror, as a genre, can do much more than scare or gross out. It can do some pretty powerful story telling if you’re willing to crawl out of the self-confining box.

Watch it and think about it.
