We recently decided it was probably time to try one of the big old pizza chains. One of the ones that have been known and loved by families all over North America for years and years. I remember going to Pizza Hut as a kid back when my taste buds only excepted cheese and pepperoni as acceptable pizza toppings. Things have changed…a little…we got ourselves a Canadian Pizza from Pizza Hut. It had Bacon, Mushrooms, and…pepperoni. I also got a few dipping sauces because we ordered online and I’m easily up sold by pretty pictures.

Ordering on the Pizza Hut website seems like it should be easy at first glance, but in reality it is a flawed system. Flawed to the point where the Pizza Hut on Pembina had to call us and ask us our address because when we selected a dipping sauce it erased the address. Stick to the phone and you’ll be fine.

The pizza, well, it reminds me of pizza you order from a big pizza chain. It was bland as heck. Don’t get me wrong, the first few bites of the first piece tasted great, nice and saucy. However a second slice in and I was thankful I had the dipping sauce. I wasn’t impressed with Pizza Hut at all.

Got something a little bit different for you today. Not only do I like to order pizza from the comfort of my sofa, I have also been known to make a pizza from scratch. So today I have a cookbook recommendation.

Most of the pizzas I make these days are from the book Pizza: More Than 60 Recipes for Delicious Homemade Pizza by Diane Morgan and Tony Gemignani. I bought it on a whim and have loved it ever since. They’ve got a variety of pizza dough recipes from New York style to Chicago deep dish (which is one of my favorites). These recipes aren’t for the faint of heart. You will be spending several hours making the is dough, in some cases letting it set over night. But the results are always great. I highly recommend getting the book!

Get more information on the book:

If your sauce is bland, don’t be afraid to add it! Try adding BBQ sauce to the mix! Heck, add extra seasoning like oregano or basil.

I recently bought some cheap pizza sauce that will remain nameless because said sauce was on sale; I got 2 or 3 bottles of it for about $5, which is a great deal. The only problem being the sauce is terrible. I should have guessed it right away but at the moment I was caught up in the glory of a sale. This sauce is so watery that it soaks right into the dough leaving the pizza dry, which I hate. So fix the problem I mixed in BBQ sauce – about half and half. Spread it on the pizza, and enjoyed a yummy BBQ pizza 10 minutes later!

We tried one of their signature pizzas, with garlic on it – on a side note, get garlic on your pizza more often. It is great – The pizza took about an hour to arrive. The staff was very friendly on the phone and pizza was piping hot when it was plopped down on our coffee table. We were off the races.

Fresh and hot this pizza stacks up. It was tender and chewy. The meat was a little spicy for Xal and didn’t sit well with her, but we both enjoyed the crust and over all cheesiness. It is a nice pizza to eat if you were having a semi formal, casual pizza dinner party.

Cold however, the Paradise Restaurant pizza lost its lust for life. I’m not sure what it was, or whether the sauce and the garlic decided it didn’t want to spend the night and took off, but cold and reheated this pizza just wasn’t as good as other Winnipeg pizzas we’ve eaten in the past.

Over all it was good, I’d order it again, but I may hesitate on breakfast.

We had Xal’s parents over for Thanksgiving this year and we all decided that it would be nice to have pizza on their last day with us. We went with Academy Pizza to go with the Romantic Comedy we were watching. Despite it’s name Academy Pizza is actually on Portage Ave, though I think it may have been on Academy at one point.

We started on a slightly low note. Xal called on a Tuesday evening and casually waited a minute on hold, and then that one-minute turned into seven minutes. I ended up calling back 30 seconds after she hung up and got service right away. We thought this was a bit odd and left a bad taste in our mouths.

But you know what didn’t leave a bad taste in our mouths? That is right, the pizza, Academy Pizza is very good. We got a Canadian and a Super Extreme, which could be the most exciting name for a deluxe pizza ever. The crust was soft and chewy they used a lot of sauce, and the toppings, although a little to finely chopping for me, tasted great. Nice cheese too. It is a great hanging around drinking a coke and watching a movie sort of pizza. But be ready to eat a lot because the crust is thin and you’ll have room for thirds.

What I thought was really neat is the fact that they have Gluten-free pizza dough and whole wheat crust available. I suggest everyone get an Academy Pizza at least once or ten times.

Today we have something a little different than usual, but not so different that you will say hey this is a pizza place blog, not hey this isn’t some place you can just write about anything you want all willy-nilly like. That being said today’s review comes from a visit to Polo Park Mall that Xal and I took recently so I could walk past Winnipeg’s new Apple Store.

Brioni’s, A Taste of Italy is a clever little restaurant tucked away in the corner of the Polo Park food court, they sell a variety of Italian ready to eat pasta dishes and yes, pizzas too. I’m always hesitant to try a mall pizza because it is usually undercooked. I will say this for Brioni’s – the crust was decent. It was thin and crisp, still had good elasticity to it, and it had a bit of flavor. That being said there wasn’t much else to write home about. Every bite tasted the same as the last and the sauce is fairly bland. If you are in the mood for a slice of pizza and not a burger I would say go for it, but if you are looking to have your taste buds completely satisfied I would try something else.

Just last week Xal came home with a pizza flier for River City Pizza. I was excited, I was even more excited that she had a coupon in her hands too! There is a good chance you can get a discount too if you become friends with River City Pizza on Facebook. I love that social networking is promoting a good slice of pizza.

We ordered the Bacon Ranch Deluxe without the Pineapple and added chicken (extra fee) in hopes of finding an even better version of the Pizza Hotline’s Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza, which is a personal favorite of mine. The gentlemen we spoke to on the phone was very willing to get us the exact pizza we wanted, and wasn’t a fast talking angst ridden teenager who would rather be texting than working…which is nice.

I really enjoyed River City Pizza. The cheese and toppings were all really tasty and fresh. This particular pizza had ranch sauce instead of the traditional tomatoes sauce, which is always a pleasant change. I would have liked to have a little more of the ranch sauce on the pizza. The crust was nice too. It wasn’t over cooked or soggy.

We even managed to save some pizza to eat cold. And it held up nicely. The cheese really pulled everything together.

For the price you are getting a good pizza that I would recommend.

After the great article that the Winnipeg Free Press wrote about the site we had a lot of new, excited people letting us know where we need to go next. Out of all the places suggested Romani’s Pizza on Pembina HWY was probably the most popular. I’d like to thank Deborah, Christy, Alain, and Travis for letting me know about it. Travis let us know that the Big New Yorker was the meat pizza that all meat pizza fans would have to try so last week Xal and I made our trip down to Romain’s Pizza to get our Large Big New Yorker.

The pizza we received did not let us down. The meat was plentiful as was the garlic. A word to the wise, if you are garlic fan then Romani’s is the place for you. We both really enjoyed the crust – it was thin but not over done. Xal who is famous for leaving the crusts behind actually enjoyed eating every bit. I really enjoyed the sauce it was tangy without being too sweet.

The only thing I would have liked is for it to be more like a New York slice. I’ve had a few slices of pizza in the Big Apple and the slices themselves were an event. With Romani’s Big New Yorker sliced into squares it lost something on me. I guess next time I will just have to request slices over squares.

I made a special effort to let this pizza get cold so we could start doing cold pizza ratings again too. Romani’s Pizza cold is highly recommended. It is not greasy or floppy. In fact the dough and cheese stood up well and would make anyone’s breakfast, lunch, or snack a happy time.

Wait time (from phone call to pick up): About 25 Minutes

It has been been a long time since we last ate a pizza, well to be honest it has just been a long time since a pizza has been photographed and reviewed. So today at the advice of the hard working staff at Classy Clips Grooming Salon we went with the Calabria Market Pizzeria & Wine Store.

The store is a little out of the way, but well worth the trip if you are looking for fine wines, unique ingredients, a tasty food. We ordered ahead, which is what I suggest you do as it is pick up only, and ended up having to wait a few extra minutes at the store. We did get to take the time to try their spicy pepperoni sticks while we waiting, yum . Store seemed to be a little understaffed, but it could be that there was a big order in the back.

Now to the good stuff. We got the Calabria special, tomatoes, chicken, olives, artichoke hearts, and cappicolo on whole wheat crust. The fresh topping where very good, the one thing lacking on this pizza was a good sauce. It was decent, but I think it was missing a certain something to pull the whole deal together. That being said, for $25 and all fresh toppings you cannot go wrong. I will be going back to try another pizza very soon.
